Greetings Friends! This time I bring you this interview with our friend Valerie Correa Photographer, Metalhead and Addicted to art in all its forms!

​

Hello, thank you very much for knowing a little about you! For this interview! and your time.

How are you, Valerie?

​

Valerie:

​

Regards! I feel very good Thank you very much for the interest in my work and everything I do.

Tell us about your career as a photographer. Are you a teacher?

​

Valerie:

​

That's right, I'm currently a teacher. I teach at the Creative University where I am also a graduate. I also teach at the IBITEC Institute.

​

Exactly what subject is that you teach?

​

Valerie:

​

I teach different areas of photography. From basic photography, conceptualization of the image, artistic production, digital retouching, self-portrait, etc.

​

I am passionate about teaching in general. The opportunity to share my knowledge with others and to be able to accompany new photographers to discover themselves through art.

​

Are you passionate about photography, because the horror genre?

​

Valerie:

​

I'm really passionate about art in its entirety. For me photography in a medium and not an end. There are many photographers who are obsessed with the technique, the mechanisms of the cameras and so on. I must admit that what I love photography is that it allows me to capture my creation in something tangible as an image.

​

I like to base my photographic themes on topics such as horror and surrealism because they are things that are always linked to my personality.

​

Many people don’t know, believe that I have a stomach of steel and that I do not fear anything, but it is the opposite. All the characters that appear in my images are based on stories from the movies or the books that have terrified me, sometimes of my own dreams as well. Being able to capture them in an image is my way of confronting them and stop fearing them. That is the real reason why I produce terror.

​

In a photograph that is what you like most, the image, the theme, the colors, the contrast, what do you capture in an image?

​

Valerie:

​

For me to conceptualize the photographs previously is the most important. It is a complex issue for those who don’t handle the subject, but in this stage the aesthetics and meaning of everything that the image will include is built. The foundations of the future project.

​

Where everything really plays an important role. A photograph doesn’t become extraordinary because of a specific color or a specific subject. What transcends an image above the others is EVERYTHING.

​

How about the students that think about what you give?

​

Valerie:

​

I have had a very good response to my classes and teaching methods in general. I would say without fear of being wrong, that my students are very happy with everything they learn and develop in my classes. In the end it is about learning the basics of how a camera is handled and the rest is about developing creative processes.

​

In my classes you work a lot, you practice a lot. Because there is no other way to improve on this.

What photography projects have you done? Tell us about the ones you have developed

​

Valerie:

​

I have been doing photography for 12 years, I lost count of the number of projects I have developed but there have been many.

​

I have spoken in my photos of all kinds of topics, from terror to feminine empowerment.

Do you have new projects in mind? As which?

​

Valerie:

​

Currently 60% of my time is devoted to teaching. Therefore, I no longer have so much time to produce my own projects as before.

​

I am more focused in this moment to the self-portrait, many people don’t know it but that is how I started in photography at that time. With the self-portrait.

​

I left it aside for a long time and in the last two years I have taken it up again and that has opened new doors because in parallel I have developed as a model.

​

It really was not part of my plan. I do self-portrait simply because sometimes I don’t have time to coordinate with models and it is much easier for me to do it with myself.

​

But I am grateful for the new opportunities this has generated for me.

​

Tell us about your experience with the Ex First Lady of the Republic of Costa Rica Mrs. Mercedes Peñas, by the way, a greeting!

​

Valerie:

​

It was something different. Of course, a great honor for me. These photographs are part of a project to highlight women in politics that is still being developed.

​

Mrs. Mercedes and her assistants received us and treated us exceptionally.

​

I remember that I contacted their assistants, I sent them the proposal and two days later they were already contacting me to schedule a date.

​

People are surprised when I tell them about that project because they think I only do surreal artistic photography.

​

What other theme would you like to photograph? Do you have any preference?

​

Valerie:

​

I like many branches of photography. Currently I am especially interested in exploiting a little more editorial photography, which is mainly related to high fashion. I think it is very artistic and that I can mix it very well with my personal style.

​

Do you like Metal, ALL metal or do you have a special genre? As which?

​

Valerie:

​

I like many subgenres of metal. But my favorites are symphonic, power and heavy.

I have favorite bands in many other subgenres as well.

​

Have you been to any concert like the Wacken in Germany?

​

Valerie:

​

I have never had the opportunity to visit a Wacken level festival. I hope to do it soon.

What do you like about Metal that attracts you? Any special vocalist? Or male vocal?

​

Valerie:

​

Many things. Even though I am not a musician, what has always attracted me is the musical complexity that is present in most of the metal.

​

Also the way in which the topics are addressed. In a raw way or in a dreamy way depending on the band. In some way, not only metal, music remains a universal language. I still believe that we are part of a community in which we can speak the same language.

​

I am fond of singing so I grew up admiring voices like Tarja, Dio, Bruce Dickinson, etc.

​

If you had the opportunity to be the professional photographer of a band who would it be? Maybe they read it ;)

​

Valerie:

​

I am currently trying to incorporate to the area of photography for bands (my lack of time does not allow me to do it as often as I would like) but I am excited by the idea of working with bands like Lujuria, Epica, Ghost and many others.

​

How about the Metal scene in your country?

​

Valerie:

​

I feel that it has improved in recent years. There are extremely talented people who are already being heard outside our borders. I have special admiration for bands like Heresy and Rotten Souls.

Saludos amigos! Esta ocasión les traigo esta entrevista con nuestra amiga Valerie Correa Fotógrafa, Metalhead y Adicta al arte en todas sus formas!

Hola muchas gracias por saber un poco de ti! Por esta entrevista! y tu tiempo

¿Cómo estas Valerie?

​

Valerie:

​

¡Saludos! Me encuentro muy bien. Muchas gracias por el interés en mi trabajo y en todo lo que hago.

Cuéntanos sobre tu carrera como fotógrafa, ¿Eres maestra verdad?

​

Valerie:

​

Así es, actualmente soy profesora. Enseño en la Universidad Creativa de dónde además soy egresada. También doy clases en el Instituto IBITEC.

​

¿Exactamente qué materia o asignatura es la que enseñas?

​

Valerie:

​

Enseño distintas áreas de la fotografía. Desde fotografía básica, conceptualización de la imagen, producción artística, retoque digital, autorretrato, etc.

La enseñanza en general me apasiona profundamente. La oportunidad de compartir mis conocimientos con otros y poder acompañar a nuevos fotógrafos a descubrirse a sí mismos por medio del arte.

​

¿Te apasiona mucho la fotografía, porque el género de terror?

​

Valerie:

​

Realmente me apasiona el arte en toda su totalidad. Para mí la fotografía en un medio y no un fin. Hay muchos fotógrafos que están obsesionados con la técnica, los mecanismos de las cámaras y demás. Yo debo admitir que lo que me apasiona de la fotografía es que me permite plasmar mi creación en algo tangible como una imagen.

​

Me gusta basar mis temáticas fotográficas en temas como terror y surrealismo porque son cosas muy ligadas a mi personalidad desde siempre.

​

Muchas personas no lo saben, creen que tengo estómago de acero y que no le temo a nada, pero es todo lo contrario. Todos los personajes que aparecen en mis imágenes están basadas en historias del cine o los libros que me han aterrado, a veces de mis propios sueños también. El poder plasmarlas en una imagen es mi manera de confrontarlas y dejar de temerles. Esa es la verdadera razón de por qué produzco terror.

​

En una fotografía que es lo que te gusta más, la imagen, el tema, los colores, el contraste, que es lo que capturas en una imagen?

​

Valerie:

Para mi conceptualizar las fotografías previamente es lo más importante. Es un tema complejo para quienes no manejan el tema, pero en esta etapa se construye la estética y el significado de todo lo que incluirá la imagen. Las bases del futuro proyecto.

​

Donde realmente todo juega un papel importante. Una fotografía no se vuelve extraordinaria por un color específico o por un tema específico. Lo que hace trascender una imagen por encima de las demás es TODO.

​

¿Qué tal los alumnos que opinan sobre lo que das?

​

Valerie:

​

He tenido muy buena respuesta a mis clases y métodos de enseñanza en general. Diría sin miedo a equivocarme, que mis estudiantes están muy contentos con todo lo que aprender y desarrollan en mis clases. Al final se trata de aprender lo básico de cómo se maneja una cámara y el resto se trata de desarrollar procesos creativos.

​

En mis clases se trabaja muchísimo, se practica muchísimo. Porque no existe otra forma de mejorar en esto.

​

¿Qué proyectos de fotografía has hecho? Cuéntanos de los que has desarrollado

​

Valerie:

​

Tengo ya 12 años haciendo fotografía, perdí la cuenta de la cantidad de proyectos que he desarrollado pero han sido muchos.

​

He hablado en mis fotos de toda clase de temas, desde terror hasta empoderamiento femenino.

​

¿Tienes nuevos planes en mente? ¿Cómo cuáles?

​

Valerie:

​

Actualmente el 60% de mi tiempo está avocado a enseñar. Por lo tanto, ya no dispongo de tanto tiempo para producir mis propios proyectos como antes.

​

Estoy más enfocada en este momento al autorretrato, muchas personas no lo saben pero así fue como inicié en la fotografía en aquel entonces. Con el autorretrato.

Lo dejé de lado mucho tiempo y en los últimos dos años lo he retomado y eso me ha abierto nuevas puertas porque de manera paralela me he desarrollado como modelo.

​

No era parte de mi plan realmente. Hago autorretrato simplemente porque a veces no tengo tiempo de coordinar con modelos y es mucho más fácil para mí hacerlo conmigo misma.

Pero estoy agradecida por las nuevas oportunidades que esto me ha generado.

​

Cuéntanos sobre tu experiencia con la ex Primera Dama de la República de Costa Rica Doña Mercedes Peñas, por cierto un saludo!

​

Valerie:

​

Fue algo diferente. Desde luego un gran honor para mí. Esas fotografías son parte de un proyecto para destacar mujeres en la política que aún se sigue desarrollando.

​

Doña Mercedes y sus asistentes nos recibieron y trataron de manera excepcional.
Recuerdo que contacté a sus asistentes, les envié la propuesta y dos días después ya me estaban contactando para agendar una fecha.

​

A la gente le sorprende cuando les hablo de ese proyecto porque creen que únicamente hago fotografía artística surreal.

​

¿De qué otro tema te gustaría hacer fotografía? Tienes alguna preferencia?

​

Valerie:

​

Me gustan muchísimas ramas de la fotografía. Actualmente estoy especialmente interesada en explotar un poco más la fotografía de corte editorial, que está principalmente relacionada a la alta moda. Creo que es muy artística y que puedo mezclarla muy bien con mi estilo personal.

​

¿Te gusta el Metal, TODO el metal o tienes algún género en especial? ¿Cómo cuáles?

​

Valerie:

​

Me gustan muchos subgéneros del metal. Pero mis favoritos son sinfónico, power y heavy.

Tengo bandas predilectas en muchísimos otros subgéneros también.

​

¿Has ido algún concierto como el Wacken de Alemania?

​

Valerie:

​

Nunca he tenido la oportunidad de visitar un festival del nivel del Wacken. Espero hacerlo próximamente.

​

¿Qué te gusta del Metal que te atrae? Alguna vocalista en especial? O vocal masculino?

​

Valerie:

​

Muchas cosas. A pesar de que no soy músico, lo que me ha atraído desde siempre es la complejidad musical que está presente en la mayor parte del metal.

​

También la manera en la que se abordan los temas. De manera cruda o de manera soñadora dependiendo la banda. De alguna manera, no solo el metal, la música sigue siendo un lenguaje universal. Yo sigo creyendo que nos hace parte de una comunidad en la que podemos hablar el mismo idioma.

​

Soy aficionada al canto así que crecí admirando a voces como Tarja, Dio, Bruce Dickinson, etc.

​

¿Si tuvieras la oportunidad de ser la fotógrafa profesional de alguna banda de quién sería? Quizás lo lea ;)

​

Valerie:

​

Actualmente estoy tratando de incorporarme al área de fotografía para bandas (mi falta de tiempo no me permite hacerlo con la frecuencia que yo quisiera) pero me emociona la idea de trabajar con bandas como Lujuria, Epica, Ghost y muchas otras.

​

¿Qué tal la escena del Metal en tu país?

​

Valerie:

​

Siento que ha mejorado en los últimos años. Hay gente extremadamente talentosa que ya está siendo escuchada fuera de nuestras fronteras. Tengo especial admiración por bandas como Heresy y Rotten Souls.

​

¿Algo más que te gustaría compartirnos?

​

Valerie:

​
