Formed in 2017, Jo Below are a four-piece melodic hard rock group based in Helsinki, Finland.

Founded from the ruins of Devil I Know, Jo Below consists of frontwoman Johanna Kari, guitarist Roni Seppänen, bassist Jonne Lindqvist and drummer Olli Vartiainen.

The group are influenced by wide range of styles varying from southern rock to grunge and pop-punk. Driven by singalong choruses, heavy rock riffs and high-quality production, the band serves an interesting blend of classic rock and modern American-style hard rock … dare we call it ’Modern Classic Rock’?

Jo Below released his debut EP "By The Rules" via Inverse Records in September 2020.

How have you been? During this quarantine

JK:

Hello, it’s my pleasure. I’ve been good and have stayed healthy, thanks for asking. This time has been good for making new songs.

Tell the world who is Johanna Kari?

JK:

I’m 26 year old singer in a band called Jo Below.

What hobbies do you have?

JK:

I don’t really have anything besides this band, but I’m still always busy. Haha! I like so many things. Now I’ve been crazy about knitting. I like to watch series and read books. The usual.

Do you have any other work apart from the band?

JK:

Yes. Things are not (yet) that crazy. I’m working Mon-Fri 8:00-16:00. Pretty boring I know.

What musical influences do you have?

JK:

This is hard one… I listen to so many different kind of bands and artists. For me it’s just a good song that I like or that touches me. I don’t have to like the band or artist or not even any other song besides that one. If I like the song, I like the song. But if I think about influences, it’s hard to say. I listen mostly something that I could never sing myself. So I don’t really know where it all comes from. I used to think Paramore was the kind of band that I wanted to sound like in my previous band. I think it’s still somewhere there when I make the vocal melodies.

Favorite female vocal singers?

JK:

So many… Ann Wilson, Hayley Williams, ALMA… pretty much everyone who really knows how to sing I admire.

Tell us about your EP, did you participate in this production writing the lyrics of the songs?

JK:

Yes, I make the lyrics and the vocal melodies to the songs.

Why Rock? Why not a little Hard Rock? Or Heavy Metal?

JK:

I think all of these you can hear somewhere in our music.

The Paying for More song is excellent! It has a lot rhythm, melody and your voice gives it a lot life, will it have an official video clip? Or is it some other song?

JK:

We haven’t made a video to this song, but the next song coming out will have a video and also later coming Bet On has a video.

It is in the process the release of the full album? Will it be pure Rock or with some special mixed style?

JK:

There might be a full-length album coming out in not-so-distant future, but right now we’re concentrating on this EP. It’s going to be pure rock with all kinds of different influences varying from pop to punk and southern rock.

How do you think about giving more diffusion to your EP? Have you thought of doing any Live Stream on any social network? What would it be like? For your fans to stay tuned

JK:

We are going to release videos for couple of the songs on the EP and we’re also going to keep pushing new music out. Currently we don’t have any plans to do a live stream, but we can’t wait to play some live shows when it’s safe again.

Formado en 2017, Jo Below es un grupo de hard rock melódico de cuatro miembros con sede en Helsinki, Finlandia.

Fundada a partir de las ruinas de Devil I Know, Jo Below está formada por la líder Johanna Kari, el guitarrista Roni Seppänen, el bajista Jonne Lindqvist y el baterista Olli Vartiainen.

JK:

Hola, es un placer. He estado bien y me he mantenido saludable, gracias por preguntar. Esta vez ha sido buena para hacer nuevas canciones.

Dile al mundo quién es Johanna Kari.

JK:

Soy cantante de 26 años en una banda llamada Jo Below.

¿Qué hobbies tienes?

JK:

Realmente no tengo nada más que esta banda, pero estoy siempre ocupada. ¡Jaja! Me gustan tantas cosas. Ahora estaba loca por tejer. Me gusta ver series y leer libros. Lo normal.

¿Tienes algún otro trabajo aparte de la banda?

JK:

Si. Las cosas no están (todavía) tan locas. Trabajo de lunes a viernes de 8:00 a 16:00. Bastante aburrido, lo sé.

¿Qué influencias musicales tienes?

JK:

Esta es difícil... escucho tantos tipos diferentes de bandas y artistas. Para mí es solo una buena canción que me gusta o que me conmueve. No me tiene que gustar la banda o el artista o ni siquiera ninguna otra canción además de esa. Si me gusta la canción, me gusta la canción. Pero si pienso en las influencias, es difícil de decir. Escucho principalmente algo que nunca podría cantar yo misma. Así que realmente no sé de dónde viene todo. Solía pensar que Paramore era el tipo de banda que quería sonar como en mi banda anterior. Creo que todavía está en algún lugar cuando hago las melodías vocales.

¿Cantantes vocales femeninas favoritas?

JK:

Tantos… Ann Wilson, Hayley Williams, ALMA… casi todos los que realmente saben cantar, los admiro.

Cuéntanos sobre tu EP, ¿Participaste en esta producción escribiendo la letra de las canciones?

JK:

Sí, hago las letras y las melodías vocales de las canciones.

JK:

No hemos hecho un video para esta canción, pero la próxima canción que saldrá tendrá un video y también, más adelante, Bet On tiene un video.

¿Está en proceso el lanzamiento del álbum completo? ¿Será puro Rock o con algún estilo mixto especial?

JK:

Puede que salga un álbum de larga duración en un futuro no muy lejano, pero ahora mismo nos estamos concentrando en este EP. Va a ser puro rock con todo tipo de influencias diferentes que van desde el pop al punk y el rock sureño.

¿Cómo piensas darle más difusión a tu EP? ¿Has pensado en hacer algun Live Stream en alguna red social? ¿Cómo sería? Para que tus fans estén atentos

JK:

Vamos a lanzar videos de algunas de las canciones del EP y también vamos a seguir lanzando nueva música. Actualmente no tenemos planes de hacer una transmisión en vivo, pero estamos ansiosos por tocar algunos programas en vivo cuando sea seguro nuevamente.

¡Porque es genial! Hay algo para todos. Creo que incluso si no eres un gran fanático del género, te pueden gustar estas canciones.

JK:
