Zoë Marie Federoff a talented Singer and Vocalist of Catalyst Crime band, mother, songwriter, music instructor, and travel enthusiast! I'm very pleased to have this interview, my friend.
Catalyst Crime band featuring current and former members of Xandria, Insatia, and Dollhouse Riot, Catalyst Crime came together from 3 different countries to create melodic metal with a wide variety of components from symphonic to death metal elements. Their debut release is due 2019.
Thank you very much for this interview! How are you? I hope you are very well in the company of your family! A hug for the little girl!

Hello and thank you! I’m quite well, writing from sunny Las Cruces New México today.
What can you tell us Zoe, what have you been doing all this time outside of the stages?
Zoe
I’ve definitely been missing performing, of course, but I’ve taken the past two years to focus on my daughter, writing for the new band, and to travel as much as possible. It really clears the head to see so many new and beautiful places and I needed to have my head cleared approaching this new project.

More than anything with the family that is important
In addition to the music outside the stages, do you have any other project or work?
Zoe
I do a lot of modeling work, which is kind of a fun, fantasy type world to be in for a while. It’s a world of beautiful fiction, as I like to call it. I also have done some backing vocals work for other bands like Atrocity, which was thoroughly enjoyable.
Your musical influences are interesting! Floor Jansen, Simone Simons and Sharon den Adel! all of them legends! How have they influenced? by their voice? for their trajectory of them? for its lyrics and musical themes?
Zoe
I think my influences are quite standard for a vocalist in my sub genre. It’s impossible to not admire these pioneering forces in this type of music. Floor in particular has always had a huge impact on me because of how she carries herself as a tall, more “imposing” figure of a woman. I grew up feeling awkward about my height and stature- I kept trying to slouch and make myself smaller, somehow, so it was really important for me to see a woman like myself walk proudly onstage and not try to hide herself.

Your Hobbies are great! Music, writing, reading, running, horseback riding, Japanese culture, and mathematics, which reading type influences you to write a song?
Zoe
I think the author I most connect to is Oscar Wilde. He was irreverent, imperfect, but beautiful as a human being and definitely impacted a lot of the content of our upcoming album. He loved the concept of excess while keenly understanding it’s ultimate limitations, and I’ve tried very hard to keep that in mind while navigating life and music.
Another thing that I like very much! I understand the taste for mathematics and for me they are great! Music and mathematics go hand in hand, what would you tell new generations about this?
Zoe
When I taught music I was very open about my enthusiasm for this connection. Music is audial math. Many of the mathematicians I’ve known throughout the years were also excellent musicians. It adds a whole level of appreciation for music to understand the mathematics behind it.

GREAT! Is very important!
Long time no hear your beautiful voice! Are you still training your voice? Some local presentations with this new band of Catalyst Crime band?
Zoe
I am always working on my voice. Classical training is such an essential foundation for what I’m trying to accomplish vocally. I’ve also been focusing a lot more on harsher vocals with this new band. It’s still new territory for me and very exciting. We’re not discussing any live shows at this point- we really want to focus on finishing and delivering a solid album right now.
Tell us a little about your new band? How did the idea?
Zoe
Bit of a long answer. After Insatia broke up, I saw it honestly as the freedom to start over with something better, more expansive, and more mature for me since I had been in that band since I was 19. I had grown a lot as a person and as a musician and had Insatia kept going I wonder if it would have been self-limiting, in some sense. This was a chance to do something new, and with people I really trusted and wanted to create with. First and foremost, my best friend Tasha, who is such a vibrant energy to have around. I can’t wait to perform with her. After that we asked Kaelen, my former Insatia bandmate, and a talented musician with a really hardworking personality. No one works longer hours than Kae. Gerit from Xandria and I had talked about working together for a while so naturally he came on board and added his unique and game-changing style. He really helped us remagine certain parts of this album in a way only he could. From there we added Rhodes, an introduction from Kaelen who I think will end up being a really fruitful addition on bass, and we asked a really talented composer and keyboardist to write the orchestrals for this album. I can’t tell you who he is yet, but he really brought the sound to life.

Are you already preparing a single? If so, could you tell us about that new single?
Zoe
I can only say there is more than one candidate for the single in our minds. I think we’ll finish the album as a whole before worrying about which one.
The musical style is Symphonic Metal and Melodic Death of Catalyst Crime, for your fans as your band will be, how could you define it? Heavy?
Zoe
I think it’s a standard reply from every band in this genre to call the upcoming album “heavier than previous work.” But in this case, it’s definitely heavier than Insatia. It’s a lot going on at once so defining it as one genre is difficult. Melodic, symphonic, but also harsh vocals and heavier riffs in some places. I don’t know, we’re doing what we want here and covering a lot of ground. I think it will be up to the listener to classify it.
Tell us a little about the festivals of 70000 tons of Metal! How about the presentations inside that great cruise in the Caribbean?
Zoe
It’s like no experience on earth. No festival has quite the same vibe, the same feeling of family and adventure. I’ve enjoyed going a few times now, most recently as a guest of Atrocity. Wow, what an experience. If you have the chance to go, go. That’s all I can say.

What plans does have for the remainder of this year?
Zoe
Finish this album. We’re hammering this month and next before heading to Stuttgart for the final recordings. When it’s all done, I think I’ll be able to sleep finally.
What surprises will you have with your band? for your fans
Zoe
If I told you, they wouldn’t be surprises. :)
Someday we will have Zoe in Latin América on a tour?
Zoe
I do love Latin American culture and people, it would be a real treat to experience it on tour one of these days.

Off topic but if I have the soap box... when a band you like breaks up, it’s really not your job to take sides. Try to enjoy and support musicians even when they go their separate ways. That’s the healthiest possible outcome for our scene. 🙂

Zoë Marie Federoff, una talentosa cantante y vocalista de la banda de Catalyst Crime, madre, compositora, instructora de música y entusiasta de los viajes. Estoy muy contento de tener esta entrevista, mi amiga.
Catalyst Crime, una banda de Catalyst Crime con miembros actuales y anteriores de Xandria, Insatia y Dollhouse Riot, se unió desde 3 países diferentes para crear un metal melódico con una amplia variedad de componentes, desde elementos sinfónicos hasta death metal. Su estreno en este 2019.

¡Hola y gracias! Estoy bastante bien, escribiendo desde el soleado Las Cruces Nuevo México hoy.
¿Qué puedes decirnos, Zoe, qué has estado haciendo todo este tiempo fuera de los escenarios?
Zoe
Definitivamente, me he estado perdiendo el desempeño, por supuesto, pero me he tomado los últimos dos años para concentrarme en mi hija, escribir para la nueva banda y viajar lo más posible. Realmente se aclara la cabeza por ver tantos lugares nuevos y hermosos, y necesitaba que me aclararan la cabeza para abordar este nuevo proyecto.
Darkzen:
Más que nada con la familia que es importante.
Además de la música fuera de los escenarios, ¿tienes algún otro proyecto o trabajo?
Zoe
Hago mucho trabajo de modelo, que es un tipo de mundo divertido y de fantasía en el que estar por un tiempo. Es un mundo de ficción hermosa, como me gusta llamarlo. También he hecho algunos trabajos vocales de apoyo para otras bandas como Atrocity, que fue muy agradable.
¡Tus influencias musicales son interesantes! Floor Jansen, Simone Simons y Sharon den Adel! ¡Todas ellas leyendas! ¿Cómo te han influido? por su voz? ¿Por su trayectoria de ellas? Por sus letras y temas musicales?
Zoe
Creo que mis influencias son bastante estándar para un vocalista en mi subgénero. Es imposible no admirar estas fuerzas pioneras en este tipo de música. El piso en particular siempre ha tenido un gran impacto en mí por la forma en que se porta como una figura de mujer más alta e "imponente". Crecí sintiéndome incómoda por mi estatura. Seguí intentando encorvarme y hacerme más pequeña, de alguna manera, por lo que fue muy importante para mí ver a una mujer como yo caminando orgullosamente en el escenario y no tratar de ocultarme.

Tus pasatiempos son geniales! Música, escritura, lectura, carrera, equitación, cultura japonesa y matemática, ¿qué tipo de lectura te influye para escribir una canción?
Zoe
Creo que el autor con el que más me conecto es Oscar Wilde. Era irreverente, imperfecto, pero hermoso como ser humano y definitivamente impactó mucho el contenido de nuestro próximo álbum. Le encantó el concepto de exceso, al tiempo que comprendía con agudeza las limitaciones finales, y he intentado muy duro tenerlo en cuenta al navegar por la vida y la música.
Otra cosa que me gusta mucho! ¡Entiendo el gusto por las matemáticas y para mí son geniales! La música y las matemáticas van de la mano, ¿qué les dirías a las nuevas generaciones sobre esto?
Zoe
Cuando enseñé música fui muy abierta acerca de mi entusiasmo por esta conexión. La música es matemática auditiva. Muchos de los matemáticos que he conocido a lo largo de los años también fueron excelentes músicos. Agrega un nivel completo de aprecio por la música para entender las matemáticas detrás de esto.
Darkzen:
¡GENIAL! ¡Es muy importante!
¡Cuánto tiempo sin escuchar tu hermosa voz! ¿Todavía estás entrenando tu voz? ¿Algunas presentaciones locales con esta nueva banda de Catalyst Crime?
Zoe
Siempre estoy trabajando en mi voz. El entrenamiento clásico es una base tan esencial para lo que estoy tratando de lograr vocalmente. También me he estado enfocando mucho más en voces más ásperas con esta nueva banda. Todavía es un territorio nuevo para mí y muy emocionante. No estamos discutiendo ningún show en vivo en este momento, realmente queremos centrarnos en terminar y entregar un álbum sólido en este momento.
Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu nueva banda? ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
Zoe
Un poco la respuesta larga. Después de que Insatia se separó, lo vi honestamente como la libertad de comenzar de nuevo con algo mejor, más expansivo y más maduro para mí desde que había estado en esa banda desde que tenía 19 años. Había crecido mucho como persona y como músico y si Insatia hubiera continuado, me pregunto si habría sido auto limitante, en cierto sentido. Esta era la oportunidad de hacer algo nuevo, y con gente en la que realmente confiaba y quería crear. En primer lugar, mi mejor amiga Tasha, que es una energía tan vibrante para tener alrededor. No puedo esperar para actuar con ella. Después de eso, le preguntamos a Kaelen, mi antiguo compañero de Insatia y un músico talentoso con una personalidad muy trabajadora. Nadie trabaja más horas que Kae. Gerit de Xandria y yo hablamos sobre trabajar juntos por un tiempo, así que, naturalmente, se unió a él y agregó su estilo único e innovador. Él realmente nos ayudó a remaginar ciertas partes de este álbum de una manera que solo él pudo. Desde allí agregamos Rhodes, una introducción de Kaelen que creo que terminará siendo una adición muy fructífera para el bajo, y le pedimos a un compositor y teclista muy talentoso que escribiera las orquestas de este álbum. Todavía no puedo decirte quién es, pero realmente le dio vida al sonido.

¿Ya estás preparando un single? Si es así, ¿podrías hablarnos de ese nuevo single?
Zoe
Solo puedo decir que hay más de un candidato para el sencillo en nuestras mentes. Creo que terminaremos el álbum en su totalidad antes de preocuparnos por cuál.
El estilo musical es Symphonic Metal y Melodic Death of Catalyst Crime, para tus fans como lo será tu banda, ¿cómo podrías definirlo? ¿Pesada?
Zoe
Creo que es una respuesta estándar de todas las bandas de este género para llamar al próximo álbum "más pesado que el trabajo anterior". Pero en este caso, definitivamente es más pesado que Insatia. Pasan muchas cosas a la vez, por lo que definirlo como un solo género es difícil. Voces melódicas, sinfónicas, pero también ásperas y riffs más pesados en algunos lugares. No lo sé, estamos haciendo lo que queremos aquí y cubrimos mucho terreno. Creo que le corresponderá al oyente clasificarlo.
¡Cuéntanos un poco sobre los festivales de 70000 toneladas de Metal! ¿Qué hay de las presentaciones dentro de ese gran crucero en el Caribe?
Zoe
Es como ninguna experiencia en la tierra. Ningún festival tiene la misma vibra, el mismo sentimiento de familia y aventura. He disfrutado yendo varias veces, más recientemente como invitada de Atrocity. Vaya, qué experiencia. Si tienes la oportunidad de ir, ve. Esto es todo lo que puedo decir.

¿Qué planes tiene para el resto de este año?

Terminar este álbum. Estamos martillando este mes y el próximo antes de dirigirnos a Stuttgart para las grabaciones finales. Cuando todo esté terminado, creo que finalmente podré dormir.

Si te lo dijera, no serían sorpresas. :)
¿Algún día tendremos a Zoe en América Latina en una gira?
Zoe
Amo la cultura y la gente de América Latina, sería un verdadero placer experimentarla en una gira uno de estos días.

¿Algo más que quieras compartir con nosotros?
Zoe
Fuera de tema, pero si tengo la caja de jabón... cuando una banda que te gusta se rompe, realmente no es tu trabajo tomar partido. Trate de disfrutar y apoyar a los músicos incluso cuando van por caminos separados. Ese es el resultado más saludable posible para nuestra escena. :)
