Eilera is a French singer who has traveled on a solo musical journey after being a member of the Chrysalis band. She published her single titled "Sea Widow", which is included in her latest album Waves, which will be released earlier this year. She is characterized by the inclusion of elements from other musical genres such as pop, electronic and folk fused with rock.
Greetings! How are you! Thank you very much for this interview.
Eilera:
I’m fine, thank you.
I know you're a musician, songwriter, guitarist, and music producer! I congratulate you! You are multifacetic! Which of these skills is best for you?
Eilera:
Thank you. It is funny you would use this word. It takes me back to the title of my very first demo-album Facettes, which was introducing the different sides of my musicianship via an album.. To answer your question, all those aspects are part of one same core for me, they are not really separated. I use those skills to reach my goal, which is : make the songs which I want to sing. I am not a specialist in any of those fields. I am a musician who follows her creative instincts and who does what she has to do in order to reach her destination. Creating musical landscapes is a very natural thing for me and using my voice is my most natural instrument to do so.
What are your hobbies?
Eilera:
I walk in nature as often as I can. This is my way of keeping sane. I need to feel the trees and I need to feel water.. Last year I moved to a new flat, which is by the sea. This happened coincidently during the same time when I was ending the work related to my new album Waves. In other words, I moved from working on songs that were inspired by an obsession for waves, to the actual waves.. This is superstition of course, but it felt like after having worked so hard, I had finally earned the right to live by the waves.
Tell us about your musical career! Why metal music?
Eilera:
I don’t think that there is only one reason to my musical direction. I think that it was a coincidence that in times when I could finally leave my parents’ house and begin my adult life in a bigger city, where I could find musicians to play with, I was really hooked on melodic metal music and as a natural consequence, this was the musical genre I decided to contribute to. Of all the music I had been listening to earlier, the vibrations of melodic metal were the ones that answered best to my energy. Yet from the very start, if you hear even my first demos with Chrysalis, before Eilera, I was experiencing already with other genres, combining jazz and electronics to Death Metal. As Eilera, I have been taking as much liberty as one can take and I am fully aware that for the purists of the metal world, what I have done is sin. But I also know that it is thanks to musicians with exploration instincts that a genre manages to survive through time. In times when I got signed to Spinefarm, the scene had become extremely dull and my new colours were thus welcome. I believe though, in spite of my own pushing away of the limits, that the basis of a genre should be respected and I value very much that some bands are playing by the rules. It is not my nature to play by the rules but I do have tones of respect for the pillars of metal music.

You're right and you were combining those sounds!
You have vocal training? I like your voice!
Eilera:
Thank you. I got vocal training when I began singing professionally, together with a singer from the Opera of Montpellier. I absolutely loved studying classical singing and this teacher was hoping to make me a classical singer. Yet this direction back then was not mine. I was working on Facettes already and I had other types of vocal influences, such as Tori Amos, Celtic voices, Björk.. I have been thinking of these times lately actually and of the high notes I used to work back then. I have never really had nor created an opportunity for myself to use such notes but I am thinking now that I would like to use them in my next album.
What are your musical influences? Within Rock / Metal or some other genre in particular
Eilera:
At the origin for me were Tori Amos, Iron Maiden, Death, In Flames, Björk, traditional nordic and Celtic folk music.
You just release the video for Sea Widow. Can you tell us a little of the history?
Eilera:
Sea Widow is part of the acoustic nordic rock experience that is my new album Waves. It is a song about staying strong and dignified in times of personal loss and adversity. There is an epic quality to it. It is the story of a woman, the wife of the captain of a fishing boat, in a village of Scotland. We meet her on the same day that she receives the news of the death of her husband. In the opening lines of the song, she is standing in her kitchen, staring at the sea.
She wants to believe that her husband is coming back. Yet her heart is telling her another truth that she is not yet ready to hear.. Will she sink under a heavy wave of despair, down to the bottom, or will she defy the Sea?

A story of a loss
Tell us about your album Sea Widow? What was the preparation to do it? Did you write the lyrics completely? What was the inspiration!
Eilera:
Yes, I always write all my lyrics.
Waves has been a new and very big step for me. Never before had I made an album that came out of an acoustic basis. At first I thought I would make a completely acoustic album. Yet as I proceeded into the creation of the songs, I noticed that a good number of them felt incomplete when I did not add a few electric and electronic layers of arrangements. I was in fact working on creating a Folk album of the modern times, which had one foot in ancient times and the other in our modern times and sound technologies.. My original muse for Waves was the Ocean. Its waves inspired the rest of the emotional and sound waves of the album. This muse was born from me feeling a growing coldness in the city. I deeply believe that greed and self-interest are at the core of all the rest of the disasters that are currently accumulating themselves, one on top of the other. We can speak of climate change. But I believe those dark weaknesses in (some) human beings are what separate us from fixing most problems. I believe that we have otherwise all the tools that we need, if we can break the vicious circle that was originally created with capitalism and the eternal will - not need, that’s a lie - for economic growth. The only way to get out of the current chaos is to remember the humanity in us and to stop always wanting more. This is what I give with Waves : an album that brings back organic sensations, passion of heart, honesty, humility and love back in the center of our picture and back with me to the city.
Would you like to do a duet or have a guest for a next single? Like who?
Eilera:
A collaboration with Björn Gelotte or Michael Amott would be great..
Do you plan to make other album very soon? Some breakthrough
Eilera:
Yes, I have started to research what the direction of my following album will be but I cannot give you anything precise yet. My mind is still too much in Waves at the moment. I still have one music video to work on and after this, we shall start rehearsing with a band and see how it feels between us. If the feeling is good, then we shall play shows together and after that will be the time for composing again.

For people who haven't heard you yet, what would you tell them?
Eilera:
Don’t come listen with expectations as to what you should hear. Leave your mind open and try several songs. Although I believe that Waves is my most accomplished work, you might like one of the earlier songs best. This really is subjective.
Any plans for any live shows this year?
Eilera:
Yes, possibly in May/June. Updates will be posted in our official websites. Nothing is confirmed yet but what I know for sure, is that I am looking forward to be working live again.

¡Sé que eres músico, compositora, guitarrista y productora musical! ¡Te felicito! Eres multifacética! ¿Cuál de estas habilidades es mejor para ti?
Eilera
Gracias. Es curioso que uses esta palabra. Me lleva de vuelta al título de mi primer álbum demo Facettes, que presentaba los diferentes lados de mi musicalidad a través de un álbum. Para responder a tu pregunta, todos esos aspectos son parte de un mismo núcleo para mí, no son realmente separados. Utilizo esas habilidades para alcanzar mi objetivo, que es: hacer las canciones que quiero cantar. No soy especialista en ninguno de esos campos. Soy un músico que sigue sus instintos creativos y que hace lo que tiene que hacer para llegar a su destino. Crear paisajes musicales es algo muy natural para mí y usar mi voz es mi instrumento más natural para hacerlo.
¿Cuáles son tus aficiones?

Camino en la naturaleza tan a menudo como puedo. Esta es mi forma de mantenerme cuerda. Necesito sentir los árboles y el agua. El año pasado me mudé a un piso nuevo, que está junto al mar. Esto sucedió coincidentemente durante el mismo tiempo cuando estaba terminando el trabajo relacionado con mi nuevo álbum Waves. En otras palabras, pasé de trabajar en canciones inspiradas en una obsesión por las olas a las olas reales. Esto es superstición, por supuesto, pero sentí que después de haber trabajado tanto, finalmente me había ganado el derecho a vivir las olas.
¡Cuéntanos sobre tu carrera musical! ¿Por qué la música metal?
Eilera
No creo que haya una sola razón para mi dirección musical. Creo que fue una coincidencia que, en momentos en que finalmente podía salir de la casa de mis padres y comenzar mi vida adulta en una ciudad más grande, donde podía encontrar músicos para tocar, estaba realmente enganchada a la música melódica de metal y como es natural en consecuencia, este fue el género musical al que decidí contribuir. De toda la música que había estado escuchando antes, las vibraciones del metal melódico fueron las que mejor respondieron a mi energía. Sin embargo, desde el principio, si escuchas incluso mis primeras demos con Chrysalis, antes de Eilera, ya estaba experimentando con otros géneros, combinando jazz y electrónica con Death Metal. Como Eilera, me he tomado tanta libertad como uno puede tomar y soy plenamente consciente de que para los puristas del mundo del metal, lo que he hecho es pecado. Pero también sé que es gracias a músicos con instintos de exploración que un género logra sobrevivir a través del tiempo. En los momentos en que me inscribí en Spinefarm, la escena se había vuelto extremadamente aburrida y mis nuevos colores eran bienvenidos. Sin embargo, creo que, a pesar de mi propio alejamiento de los límites, se debe respetar la base de un género y valoro mucho que algunas bandas estén tocando las reglas. No es mi naturaleza tocar según las reglas, pero tengo un tono de respeto por los pilares de la música metal.

¿Tienes entrenamiento vocal? ¡Me gusta tu voz!

Gracias. Obtuve entrenamiento vocal cuando comencé a cantar profesionalmente, junto con un cantante de la Ópera de Montpellier. Me encantaba estudiar canto clásico y este profesor esperaba convertirme en cantante clásico. Sin embargo, esta dirección en ese entonces no era mía. Ya estaba trabajando en Facettes y tenía otros tipos de influencias vocales, como Tori Amos, voces celtas, Björk ... He estado pensando en estos tiempos últimamente y en las notas altas que solía trabajar en ese entonces. Realmente nunca tuve ni creé una oportunidad para usar esas notas, pero ahora pienso que me gustaría usarlas en mi próximo álbum.
¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales? Dentro del Rock / Metal o algún otro género en particular

Acabas de lanzar el vídeo de Sea Widow. ¿Puedes contarnos un poco de la historia?
Eilera
Sea Widow es parte de la experiencia acústica del rock nórdico que es mi nuevo álbum Waves. Es una canción sobre mantenerse fuerte y digno en tiempos de pérdida personal y adversidad. Hay una cualidad épica en ello. Es la historia de una mujer, la esposa del capitán de un barco de pesca, en un pueblo de Escocia. La conocemos el mismo día que recibe la noticia de la muerte de su esposo. En las primeras líneas de la canción, ella está parada en su cocina, mirando el mar.
Ella quiere creer que su esposo regresará. Sin embargo, su corazón le está diciendo otra verdad que aún no está lista para escuchar... ¿Se hundirá bajo una fuerte ola de desesperación, hasta el fondo, o desafiará al Mar?

Una historia de una pérdida
Cuéntanos sobre tu álbum Sea Widow? ¿Cuál fue la preparación para hacerlo? ¿Escribiste la letra por completo? ¿Cuál fue la inspiración!

Sí, siempre escribo todas mis letras.
Waves ha sido un paso nuevo y muy grande para mí. Nunca antes había hecho un álbum que saliera de una base acústica. Al principio pensé que haría un álbum completamente acústico. Sin embargo, a medida que avanzaba en la creación de las canciones, noté que una buena cantidad de ellas se sentía incompleta cuando no agregué algunas capas de arreglos eléctricos y electrónicos. De hecho, estaba trabajando en la creación de un álbum folklórico de los tiempos modernos, que tenía un pie en los tiempos antiguos y el otro en nuestros tiempos modernos y tecnologías de sonido. Mi musa original para Waves fue el Océano. Sus ondas inspiraron el resto de las ondas emocionales y sonoras del álbum. Esta musa nació de mí sintiendo una creciente frialdad en la ciudad. Creo profundamente que la avaricia y el interés propio están en el centro de todos los demás desastres que actualmente se están acumulando, uno encima del otro. Podemos hablar de cambio climático. Pero creo que esas debilidades oscuras en (algunos) seres humanos son lo que nos separa de solucionar la mayoría de los problemas. Creo que, de lo contrario, tenemos todas las herramientas que necesitamos, si podemos romper el círculo vicioso que se creó originalmente con el capitalismo y la voluntad eterna (no es necesario, eso es mentira) para el crecimiento económico. La única forma de salir del caos actual es recordar la humanidad en nosotros y dejar de querer siempre más. Esto es lo que doy con Waves: un álbum que devuelve sensaciones orgánicas, pasión de corazón, honestidad, humildad y amor de nuevo en el centro de nuestra imagen y de regreso conmigo a la ciudad.

¿Planeas hacer otro álbum muy pronto? Algún avance
Eilera
Sí, he comenzado a investigar cuál será la dirección de mi siguiente álbum, pero todavía no puedo darte nada preciso. Mi mente todavía está demasiado en Waves en este momento. Todavía tengo un video musical para trabajar y después de esto, comenzaremos a ensayar con una banda y veremos cómo se siente entre nosotros. Si el sentimiento es bueno, entonces tocaremos shows juntos y luego será el momento de volver a componer.

Sí, posiblemente en mayo / junio. Las actualizaciones se publicarán en nuestros sitios web oficiales. Todavía no se ha confirmado nada, pero lo que sé con certeza es que estoy deseando volver a trabajar en vivo.
