Greystone Canyon is an Australian band who is getting ready to release their fourth single called “Astral Plane”. They are already working in their second album. We talked with vocalist Darren Cherry about it. You can read the interview below, enjoy it!

 

How was the Greystone Canyon's name is born?

 

Firstly, thank you for this great opportunity and your interest in our music. Like most bands we had a list of names that we thought would reflect our sound.... from the list we had we all agreed on Greystone Canyon.

 

You’re a hard rock band based in Melbourne, Australia who has been influenced in many ways: the music scene in your hometown, personal interest and musical experiences. What do you think it’s the main Greystone Canyon influence that impact in concept and sound of this band?

 

We are influenced by many great bands mainly from the 70’s and 80’s including rock, metal, country, AOR, classic rock and blues. I personally loved it when bands in the 70’s like Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin would cover many styles all on one album and would not limit themselves to just one sound or style. When it comes to song writing that is what excites me.. Greystone Canyon can write a powerful heavy rock song or a progressive epic ballad or an acoustic western themed song which keeps it interesting.... well for us anyway ha ha ha.

 

Greystone Canyon released in 2018 their debut album called “While the wheels still turn”. How was the composing and recording process around this album?

 

The songs were written and recorded over an 18 month period... we worked very hard demoing the songs and finding our sound... the use of classical and traditional acoustic parts and also vocal harmonies were tried and tested and we found this help give the band a diverse sound. We tracked all the drums and bass for the album at a “goat sound studios” in Melbourne and then recorded all the guitars and vocals ourselves. The mixing was done by Grammy nominated producer Glen Robinson (Queensryche, Voivod, Annihilator) in Canada.

 

“While the wheels still turn” has been having a positive response from metal press media around the world. Which are the band feelings about it?

 

The response has been SO fantastic... we were very happy with how the album turned out but you never know if it will “connect” with people and we feel very fortunate that the album received so many positive reviews from the press and music lovers alike. Now the challenge is to back it up with a second album.

 

Greystone Canyon sound is based in hard rock mixing with country/western music. How you defined the sound of the band? If I’m being honest, I really like your style and how the band is being influenced by another metal genres.

 

I would say we are rock band in the broadest sense of the word.. there is definitely a metal influence too as well as southern, blues, country and even prog. The most important thing is having strong songs, good lyrics wrapped up in tasteful music. If you’re the type of person that likes everything from Led Zeppelin to Megadeth then you might dig Greystone Canyon.

 

Have you played some “While the wheels still turn” song in concert? How is the people response around this album and your musical concept?

 

We have not played any live shows yet... we are hoping that with the release of our second album we will have a good local interest and enough songs to put together a really great live presentation that music fans will want to see. We have used the music videos as a great way of promoting what the band is all about and that has worked great for us so far.

 

You're about to release the last song or your debut album: Astral Plane because the band has started the composing process of your second album. Every single has you released shows a different Greystone Canyon sound, very versatile. How did you define the selection of promotional singles for this album?

 

Thank you! Yes we are about release the fourth video single and then all our focus will be on completing our new record. The singles we chose were based on showcasing different elements and sounds like “In These Shoes” has a ZZ Top style intro that has a western feel with some slide guitar that transitions into Megadeth style verse and the song even has a mini drum solo and we were able wrap that in a commercial style 5 min song.. we went with that one first as kind of an introduction that has a little bit of everything we do. We also used Spotify and music press reviews once the album had been out a few months to see what songs were the favourites and that also played a part in choosing the other singles “ Take us All” and “ Path We Stray”.

 

How is the new album composing and recording process? Is there's an evolution in the Greystone Canyon's sound?

 

We spent a lot of time on pre production for the new songs and everything is coming together now. We have ten new songs and all our focus is on making a great follow up to “while the wheels still turn”. Yes the sound is evolving and we are adding some different sounds here and there but nothing too drastic... the most important thing is the strength of the songs and It feels like we have some great tunes for this album.

Greystone Canyon es una banda Australiana que está preparándose para el lanzamiento de su cuarto sencillo llamado “Astral Plane”. Ellos también ya se encuentran trabajando en su segundo material de estudio. Platicamos con su vocalista Darren Cherry al respecto. Puedes leer la entrevista abajo, ¡Disfrútala!

 

¿Cómo nació el nombre de Greystone Canyon?

 

Primeramente, gracias por esta gran oportunidad y tu interés en nuestra música. Como muchas bandas teníamos una lista de nombres que pensamos podrían reflejar nuestro sonido... de esa lista que teníamos todos aceptamos el de Greystone Canyon.

 

Ustedes son una banda de hard rock con base en Melbourne, Australia que ha estado influenciada de muchas maneras: la escena musical en tu lugar de origen, intereses personales y experiencias musicales. ¿Cuál creen que es la principal influencia que ha impactado en el concepto y sonido de esta banda?

 

Estamos influenciados por muchas bandas principalmente de los 70’s y 80’s incluyendo rock, metal, country, AOR, rock clásico y blues. Personalmente, amo cuando bandas de los 70’s como Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath o Led Zeppelin cubrían muchos estilos en un solo álbum y no se limitaban a un solo sonido o estilo. Cuando se trata de escribir canciones, eso es lo que me emociona...

Greystone Canyon puede escribir una poderosa canción de rock pesado o una balada épica progresiva o una canción acústica de temática wéstern que la mantiene interesante... bueno para nosotros de cualquier forma ha, ha, ha.

 

Greystone Canyon lanzó en 2018 su álbum debut titulado “While the wheels still turn”. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición y grabación alrededor de este álbum?

 

Las canciones fueron escritas y grabadas durante un período de 18 meses... trabajamos muy duro demostrando las canciones y encontrando nuestro sonido ... el uso de partes acústicas clásicas y tradicionales y también las armonías vocales se probaron y probaron y encontramos que estas ayudaron a que la banda tenga un sonido diverso. Realizamos las pistas de todos los tambores y bajos para el álbum en "Goat Sound Studios" en Melbourne y luego grabamos todas las guitarras y voces nosotros mismos. La mezcla fue realizada por el productor nominado al Grammy Glen Robinson (Queensryche, Voivod, Annihilator) en Canadá.

 

“While the wheel still turn” ha tenido una respuesta positiva de diferentes medios de prensa de metal alrededor del mundo. ¿Cuáles son los sentimientos de la banda al respecto?

 

La respuesta ha sido TAN fantástica ... estuvimos muy contentos con la forma en que resultó el álbum, pero nunca se sabe si se "conectará" con la gente y nos sentimos muy afortunados de que el álbum haya recibido tantas críticas positivas de la prensa y los amantes de la música por igual. Ahora el desafío es mantenerlo con un segundo álbum.

 

El sonido de Greystone Canyon está basado en el hard rock combinado con música western y country. ¿Cómo definieron el sonido de la banda? Si soy honesta, realmente me gusta su estilo y como la banda ha sido influenciada por otros géneros del metal.

 

Yo diría que somos una banda de rock en el sentido más amplio de la palabra... hay una influencia metal pero también sureña, blues, country e incluso progresivo. La cosa más importante es tener canciones fuertes, buenas letras envueltas en música de buen gusto. Si tú eres el tipo de persona que le gusta todo, desde Les Zeppelin hasta Megadeth, entonces puede agradarte Greystone Canyon.

 

¿Han tocado algunas de las canciones de “While the wheels still turn” en concierto? ¿Cómo es la respuesta de la gente alrededor de este álbum y de su concepto musical?

 

Todavía no hemos tocado ningún show en vivo... esperamos que con el lanzamiento de nuestro segundo álbum tengamos un buen interés local y suficientes canciones para armar una presentación en vivo realmente genial que los fanáticos de la música quieran ver. Hemos utilizado los videos musicales como una excelente forma de promocionar de qué se trata la banda y hasta ahora nos ha funcionado muy bien.

 

Ustedes están a punto de lanzar su último sencillo promocional de su álbum debut: Astral Plane, porque la banda ha comenzado el proceso de composición de su segundo álbum. Cada single que han lanzado muestra un sonido diferente de Greystone Canyon, muy versátil. ¿Cómo definieron la selección de singles promocionales para este álbum?

 

¡Gracias! Sí, estamos a punto de lanzar el cuarto video sencillo y luego nos enfocaremos en completar nuestro nuevo disco. Los singles que elegimos se basaron en mostrar diferentes elementos y sonidos como "In These Shoes" tiene una introducción al estilo ZZ Top que tiene una sensación western con un poco de guitarra deslizante que pasa al verso de estilo Megadeth y la canción incluso tiene un solo solo de batería y nosotros pudimos concluir eso en una canción de estilo comercial de 5 minutos... fuimos con esa primero como una especie de introducción que tiene un poco de todo lo que hacemos. También usamos Spotify y reseñas de prensa musical una vez que el álbum había salido unos meses para ver qué canciones eran las favoritas y eso también jugó un papel en la elección de los otros singles "Take us All" y "Path We Stray".

 

¿Cómo va el proceso de composición y grabación del nuevo álbum? ¿Habrá una evolución en el sonido de Greystone Canyon?

 

Pasamos mucho tiempo en la pre producción de las nuevas canciones y todo se está uniendo ahora. Tenemos diez nuevas canciones y todo nuestro enfoque está en hacer un gran seguimiento de "While the wheels still turn". Sí, el sonido está evolucionando y estamos agregando algunos sonidos diferentes aquí y allá, pero nada demasiado drástico... lo más importante es la fuerza de las canciones y parece que tenemos algunas canciones geniales para este álbum.
