Tim Tronckoe is a rock and metal photographer. He has been participating doing some photoshooting for bands like Slayer, Skunk Anansie, Ghost, Opeth, Mastodon, Papa Roach, Alter Bridge, Machine Head, Trivium, Amanda Palmer, Hatebreed and many more and he is also the home photographer for festivals like Graspop Metal Meeting, Groezrock, Alcatraz Metal Fest and some others.

Thank you so much for this interview. People can recognize your work because you have been the photographer behind bands like Epica, Alter Bridge, Halestorm, Lamb of God and some festivals like Metal Female Voices Festival and Graspop Metal Meeting.

 

This year you’re going to release your new project called “Portraits” which includes some rock musicians like Alissa White-Gluz, Anneke van Giersbergen, Sharon den Adel and Mina Caputo around a victorian atmosphere. Can you tell us where’s the concept born?

 

Tim:

 

I've always been a big admirer of classical art. Combining my work field with my passion for art was something that suddenly came to me while visiting an art exhibition in my home town of Ghent, Belgium. I've always loved the drama of painters like Rembrandt, Caravaggio ... Adding that to the images and artists people know me from, was the next big challenge for me. So, three years ago, I started this project and now I never could have imagined how much of a hype it was going to be.

 

Syl:

 

What was the hardest thing to do during “Portraits” process?

 

Tim:

 

Arranging a big shoot like this is always a challenge. It requires so many different factors that I simply couldn't do it on my own. I had an amazing team around me helping wherever they could, whether it was with make-up, hair, locations or production. I wouldn't say it made things easier for me, since I'm such a control freak. However, it made me feel a lot more calm about the whole process, so I was actually able to enjoy it a lot.

 

Syl:

 

You are going to make an exhibition about “Portraits” in Belgium, how do you feel about people’s response in this project?

 

Tim:

 

People's response regarding PORTRAITS has been incredible. I think the main reason for this is that no one saw this coming. I was incredibly overwhelmed when almost all of the artists who had participated came to me, afterwards, expressing their surprise in how huge this had become. I do realise that I'm only as good as my last picture, so making this a success was an enormous goal for me. I'm happy to have made this a reality.

 

Darkzen:

 

As a professional photographer, what is the most important thing for you when you are taking a picture? What transmits the image, the capture or the moment.

 

Tim:

 

To me, a great connection with me subject means everything. Lights and cameras are things you can anticipate. Having that relationship, that connection with the person you're photographing is everything. If you don't have that, it will immediately show in the image. That's one of the reasons I mainly wanted to work with musicians who I'd already shared some time with. It's all a matter of trust, which is something you simply cannot buy.

 

Syl:

 

Do you have some people who influenced your work as photographer?

 

Tim:

 

Some of my main influences have always been the classical painters. Their style and technique still lives today and it's been interpreted so many times by other artists. As a photographer, I would have to mention Annie Leivobitz, Erwin Olaf en David Lachapelle as my main influences.

Something else you would like to share with us?

 

 

 

Tim:

 

Working on this project has taught me a lot about myself. It's taken me three years to complete, but I would most certainly do it all over again. I've met so many amazing people along the way, it's truly unbelievable.

Este año estás por publicar tu nuevo proyecto titulado “Portraits” que cuenta con la presencia de algunos músicos como Alissa White-Gluz, Anneke van Giersbergen, Sharon den Adel y Mina Caputo alrededor de una atmósfera victoriana, ¿puedes decirnos de dónde nació este concepto?

 

Tim:

 

Siempre he sido un gran admirador del arte clásico. Combinar mi campo de trabajo con mi pasión por el arte fue algo que repentinamente ocurrió mientras visitaba una exhibición de arte en mi ciudad natal de Gante, Bélgica. Siempre he amado el drama de pintores como Rembrandt y Caravaggio… agregar esto a las imágenes y artistas que la gente me conoce, fue el siguiente gran reto para mí. Así que desde hace tres años empecé este proyecto y ahora, nunca podría haber imaginado el impacto que tendría.

 

Syl:

 

¿Qué fue lo más difícil por hacer durante el proceso de “Portraits”?

 

Tim:

 

 Organizar una gran sesión como esta es siempre un desafío. Requiere de diferentes factores que simplemente no podría hacerlo por mi cuenta. Tenía un equipo increíble a mi alrededor que me ayudaba donde podía, ya fuera con maquillaje, cabello, locaciones o producción. No diría que me hizo las cosas más fáciles, ya que soy un fanático del control. Sin embargo, me hizo sentir mucho más tranquilo sobre todo el proceso, por lo que en realidad pude disfrutarlo mucho.

 

Syl:

 

Estas por realizar una exhibición acerca de “Portraits” en Bélgica, ¿cómo te sientes acerca de la respuesta de la gente en este proyecto?

 

Tim:

 

La respuesta de la gente con respecto a “Portraits” ha sido increíble. Creo que la razón principal de esto es que nadie vio venir esto. Estaba increíblemente abrumado cuando casi todos los artistas que habían participado vinieron a mí, después, expresando su sorpresa por lo enorme que se había convertido. Me doy cuenta de que solo soy tan bueno como mi última foto, por lo que hacer de esto un éxito fue un objetivo enorme para mí. Estoy feliz de haber hecho esto realidad.

 

Darkzen:

 

Como fotógrafo profesional, ¿qué es lo más importante cuando estás tomando una imagen?, es decir, qué transmite la imagen o la captura del momento.

 

Tim:

 

Para mí, la conexión que se establece entre el sujeto y conmigo lo significa todo. Las luces y las cámaras son cosas que puedes anticipar. Tener esa relación, esa conexión con la persona que estás fotografiando lo es todo. Si no tiene eso, se mostrará inmediatamente en la imagen. Esa es una de las razones por las que principalmente quería trabajar con músicos con quienes ya había compartido algún tiempo. Todo es una cuestión de confianza, que es algo que simplemente no puedes comprar.

 

Syl:

 

¿Tienes algunas personas que han influenciado tu trabajo como fotógrtafo?

 

Tim:

 

Algunas de mis principales influencias siempre han sido los pintores clásicos. Su estilo y técnica aún viven hoy y han sido interpretados muchas veces por otros artistas. Como fotógrafo, tendría que mencionar a Annie Leivobitz, Erwin Olaf y David Lachapelle como mis principales influencias.

¿Tienes algo que te gustaría compartir con nosotros?

 

Tim:

 

Trabajar en este proyecto me ha enseñado mucho sobre mí. Me llevó tres años completarlo, pero seguramente lo volvería a hacer. En el camino conocí a muchas personas grandiosas, es realmente increíble.
