ETWAS is a french symphonic metal band. In August 2020, thefirst EP intitled "BEHIND THE VEIL" is released, composed of six epic and melancholic ambient, allying the sweetness of a lyrical voice to the violence of the guitars.
Together or by distance, each member of the band is part of the composition of the songs, integrating a piece of his personality to the melodies and the atmospheres.
Greetings friends! Thank you very much for having the interview with you! How have you been?
Etwas:
Thank you for taking the time to interview us. We are fine, thank you. We are going out from silence to present our new album, so everything is perfect.
Tell us a bit about the story behind Etwas band? Just a couple of years ago you released your EP
Etwas:
Well, Etwas is first of all a story of friendship. We decided to create music with friends and the alchemy worked. We wanted to make the music we love, to convey emotions. It took a lot of time to compose and to bring our EP "Behind the Veil" to life because it was our very first trial together. But, I think it was a successful method because the result was exactly what we wanted at the moment. I guess that creating music with friends and passion is something that corresponds to us : it is so natural and easy to talk about what is good and what is not, how we want to carry a track, the melodies. Each one is free to share his thoughts and feelings about a song and we keep it or modify it until it suits to everyone. We make music with our hearts and souls.
Symphonic Metal or Black Symphonic Metal? Or the style of the band is more than this musical style?
Etwas:
It is not easy for a band to be in such and such style. Because every band has different influences and tastes in music. And, obviously, it is shown through in composition. With the new album, I think we can consider Etwas as a black symphonic metal band. It has many codes of this musical style.
Behind the Veil EP was the little album that gave rise to your new album with the same style or with some more surprises?
Etwas:
Our first EP "Behind the Veil" was totally symphonic metal as a lot of band - that inspired us a lot - made some years ago. But, with our new album that everyone could discover in September, we took a decisive turn in our music because we wanted something less shy, more hard-hitting. Something that looked like the music we loved. If we began with symphonic metal, we continue with a harder style which can be considered as black symphonic metal. Even we have many influences. And, for sure, it will be full of surprises.
Tell us who are the members of the band? Your musical influences?
Etwas:
We are four in the band. Silver is the guitar player and composer of the music. He is also the one who mixes and masterises our albums. He played music longer than the other members of the band and has many influences from progressive metal, metalcore to extreme black metal. Florian is the bass player and played bass since he was a teen. He likes heavy metal, he is for the sure the less extreme of all us. Clement is the drummer, he played for many years and likes death metal with brutal and fast drums. And me,Victoria, the singer and lyrics writer. If I liked "classical" symphonic metal when I was younger, I rather like now symphonic black/death metal with guttural voices and big orchestrations in creepy ambients.
Victoria ! What's your story? How did you start this path within Metal? Your biggest musical influences?
Victoria:
I think I discovered metal like many teens : by chance. As a teen, I used to listen what my friends listened, what my family listened, what the radio made us all listened to. And, one day, I borrowed a CD to the library of my town because the cover was cool : Cradle of Filth - Dusk and her Embrace. I was told about metal but I never listened to at this moment. When I put the album in my CD reader, I was horrified and wondered how people could like this kind of music. But in real, I was intrigued and gave the album a second chance. And what a reveal ! This dark and gloomy ambient with screaming voices. I felt in love. So I listened to metal music, more and more, and discovered Nightwish and the lyrical voice of Tarja, Epica and the enchanting voice of Simone, Evanescence with the melancholic voice of Amy Lee, and told myself "That's what I want to do". I began to sing by myself when no one was listening for years and years. And, one day, my boyfriend heard me singing, telling me I had a pretty voice and that I should exploit it. He played in a metal band for years and encouraged me to join another one, so much so it gave me the confidence I needed to have to search for a band. That is how I met Silver and that we bring Etwas to life.
Right now with the opening of massive musical events in several countries, do you already have dates to continue with your new album?
Etwas:
We are searching for dates right now to present our new album. We already had some contacts and we are planning some shows. We can't wait !
Tell us a bit about your new album Enochian Keys - Chvpter I, what is the basis, the theme on which the album was written? Does it have a slightly different musical style than Behind the Veil?
Etwas:
Excepted the musicians, all is different on "Enochian Keys - Chvpter I". It is much more brutal, violent, more symphonic too.
The covered topics are occult arts as can be divination, alchemy, necromancy, communication with the dead, witchcraft... It is a quite darker side of the band we wanted to show because it is our very essence. We got influenced by bands like Carach Angren, Blackthorn, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Candles and Wraiths, that we listened for years. We also took inspiration in french poetry with Baudelaire. We wanted something dreary, gloomy, something that really corresponds to us all. And we are very proud of the result.
Any video or new video in process? About this new album
Etwas:
Absolutely. Last month we released our first music video with a drumbeat on Youtube to introduce the new album. We take on the task of making others because video clips are one of the most efficient ways of disseminating music.
The albúm cover looks great! For you what does it mean?
Etwas:
Thank you ! It is Baphomet in a dark church. The album cover announces at first sight the ambient of the music inside : something dark that will haunt the listener. Baphomet is as worshipped as feared, he inspires apprehension and so could be considered our album by its themes.
Do you have any dates for other presentations?
Etwas:
For now, we contacted some web magazines and articles writers to present "Enochian Keys - Chvpter I". And we hope it will be enjoyed.

ETWAS es una banda francesa de metal sinfónico. En agosto de 2020 se lanza el primer EP titulado "DETRÁS DEL VELO", compuesto por seis épicos y melancólicos tracks, aliando la dulzura de una voz lírica a la violencia de las guitarras.
Juntos o a distancia, cada integrante de la banda forma parte de la composición de las canciones, integrando un trozo de su personalidad a las melodías y las atmósferas.
¡Saludos amigos! ¡Muchas gracias por tener la entrevista con ustedes! ¿Cómo has estado?
Etwas:
Gracias por tomarte el tiempo para entrevistarnos. Estamos bien gracias. Salimos del silencio para presentar nuestro nuevo disco, para que todo sea perfecto.
Cuéntanos un poco sobre la historia detrás de la banda Etwas. Hace apenas un par de años ustedes lanzaron su EP
Etwas:
Bueno, Etwas es ante todo una historia de amistad. Decidimos crear música con amigos y la alquimia funcionó. Queríamos hacer la música que amamos, transmitir emociones. Tomó mucho tiempo componer y dar vida a nuestro EP "Behind the Veil" porque fue nuestra primera prueba juntos. Pero creo que fue un método exitoso porque el resultado fue exactamente lo que queríamos en ese momento. Supongo que hacer música con amigos y pasión es algo que nos corresponde: es tan natural y fácil hablar de lo que está bien y lo que no, de cómo queremos llevar un tema, las melodías. Cada uno es libre de compartir sus pensamientos y sentimientos sobre una canción y la mantenemos o la modificamos hasta que se adapte a todos. Hacemos música con el corazón y el alma.
¿Metal Sinfónico o Black Symphonic Metal? ¿O el estilo de la banda es más que este estilo musical?
Etwas:
No es fácil que una banda tenga tal o cual estilo. Porque cada banda tiene diferentes influencias y gustos musicales. Y, obviamente, se muestra en la composición. Con el nuevo álbum, creo que podemos considerar a Etwas como una banda de black symphonic metal. Tiene muchos códigos de este estilo musical.
Behind the Veil EP fue el pequeño disco que dio origen a nuestro nuevo disco con el mismo estilo o con alguna sorpresa más?
Etwas:
Nuestro primer EP, "Behind the Veil", fue totalmente de metal sinfónico como lo hizo una gran cantidad de bandas, que nos inspiraron mucho, hace algunos años. Pero, con nuestro nuevo disco que todo el mundo pudo descubrir en septiembre, dimos un giro decisivo en nuestra música porque queríamos algo menos tímido, más contundente. Algo que se pareciera a la música que amábamos. Si comenzamos con el metal sinfónico, continuamos con un estilo más duro que se puede considerar como black symphonic metal. Incluso nosotros tenemos muchas influencias. Y, seguro, estará lleno de sorpresas.
Cuéntanos, ¿Quiénes son los integrantes de la banda? ¿Sus influencias musicales?
Etwas:
Somos cuatro en la banda. Silver es el guitarrista y compositor de la música. También es quien mezcla y masteriza nuestros discos. Tocó música durante más tiempo que los otros miembros de la banda y tiene muchas influencias, desde metal progresivo, metalcore hasta black metal extremo. Florian es el bajista y tocó el bajo desde que era un adolescente. Le gusta el heavy metal, seguro que es el menos extremo de todos nosotros. Clement es el baterista, tocó durante muchos años y le gusta el death metal con baterías brutales y rápidas. Y yo, Victoria, la cantante y letrista. Si me gustaba el metal sinfónico "clásico" cuando era más joven, ahora me gusta más el black/death metal sinfónico con voces guturales y grandes orquestaciones en ambientes espeluznantes.
¡Victoria! ¿Cuál es tu historia? ¿Cómo empezaste este camino dentro del Metal? ¿Tus mayores influencias musicales?
Victoria:
Creo que descubrí el metal como muchos adolescentes: por casualidad. Cuando era adolescente, solía escuchar lo que escuchaban mis amigos, lo que escuchaba mi familia, lo que la radio hacía que todos escucháramos. Y, un día, le pedí prestado un CD a la biblioteca de mi pueblo porque la portada era genial: Cradle of Filth - Dusk and her Embrace. Me hablaron de metal, pero nunca lo escuché en este momento. Cuando puse el álbum en mi lector de CD, me horroricé y me pregunté cómo a la gente le puede gustar este tipo de música. Pero en realidad, estaba intrigada y le di al álbum una segunda oportunidad. ¡Y qué revelación! Este ambiente oscuro y lúgubre con voces que gritan. Me enamoré. Así que escuché metal, cada vez más, y descubrí a Nightwish y la voz lírica de Tarja, Epica y la voz encantadora de Simone, Evanescence con la voz melancólica de Amy Lee, y me dije: "Eso es lo que quiero hacer". Empecé a cantar solo cuando nadie escuchaba durante años y años. Y, un día, mi novio me escuchó cantar, diciéndome que tenía una voz bonita y que debía explotarla. Tocó en una banda de metal durante años y me animó a unirme a otra, tanto que me dio la confianza que necesitaba para buscar una banda. Fue así como conocí a Silver y que le damos vida a Etwas.
Ahora mismo con la apertura de eventos musicales masivos en varios países, ¿ya tienen fechas para continuar con su nuevo disco?
Etwas:
Estamos buscando fechas ahora mismo para presentar nuestro nuevo disco. Ya teníamos algunos contactos y estamos planeando algunos shows. ¡No podemos esperar!
Cuéntanos un poco sobre su nuevo álbum Enochian Keys - Chvpter I, ¿Cuál es la base, el tema sobre el que se escribió el álbum? ¿Tiene un estilo musical ligeramente diferente al de Behind the Veil?
Etwas:
Con la excepción de los músicos, todo es diferente en "Enochian Keys - Chvpter I". Es mucho más brutal, violento, más sinfónico también.
Los temas tratados son las artes ocultas como pueden ser la adivinación, la alquimia, la nigromancia, la comunicación con los muertos, la brujería... Es un lado bastante más oscuro de la banda que queríamos mostrar porque es nuestra esencia. Nos influenciaron bandas como Carach Angren, Blackthorn, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Candles y Wraiths, que escuchamos durante años. También nos inspiramos en la poesía francesa con Baudelaire. Queríamos algo lúgubre, lúgubre, algo que realmente nos corresponda a todos. Y estamos muy orgullosos del resultado.
¿Algún vídeo o vídeo nuevo en proceso? Sobre este nuevo álbum
Etwas:
Absolutamente. El mes pasado lanzamos nuestro primer videoclip con un toque de batería en Youtube para presentar el nuevo álbum. Nos damos a la tarea de hacer otros porque los videoclips son una de las formas más eficientes de difundir la música.
¡La portada del álbum se ve genial! ¿Para ustedes que significa?
Etwas:
¡Gracias! Es Baphomet en una iglesia oscura. La portada del álbum anuncia a primera vista el ambiente de la música en su interior: algo oscuro que obsesionará al oyente. Baphomet es tan adorado como temido, inspira aprensión y así podría ser considerado nuestro álbum por sus temas.
¿Tienen fechas para otras presentaciones?
Etwas:
Por ahora, nos pusimos en contacto con algunas revistas web y escritores de artículos para presentar "Enochian Keys - Chvpter I". Y esperamos que sea disfrutado.
