Progressive powerhouse Ex Libris entered the world of heavy metal in 2004. Hailing from the Netherlands, a country known for it’s big and diverse female-fronted scene, they stand out as u unique voice within the genre. Classically trained soprano Dianne van Giersbergen soars and whispers throughout big, bombastic songs that are not only impressive in length, but also in sheer, raw power. There’s ample room for progressive licks, melodies and solo’s next to atmospheric and soothing soundscapes. But make no mistake, they put the pedal to the metal. Pounding double bass drums, furious riffs and frighteningly intense vocals all combine to make Ex Libris a singular force in the world of female-fronted music. Expect full-on musicianship, epic songwriting, extreme dynamics and the full emotional spectrum from one of the most gifted sopranos in the Netherlands.

PART ONE: ANNE BOLEYN

The Courtship

A historical-musical tour is presented through the guitars influenced by the progressive metal sound remembering the love episode that Anne Boleyn had with Henry VIII. The classic formation of Dianne van Giersbergen brings some symphonic dyes to the song playing with different tones of voice trying to recreate the emotions experienced in this historical episode. The combination of the keyboards performed by Koem Stam and the guitar of Bob Wijtsma is well achieved in conjunction with the vocal voiceover.

The Miscarriage

This song describes the abortions that Anne Boleyn suffered in her attempt to procreate a son with Henry VIII, the atmosphere that creates the song makes us imagine the main character overflowing a feeling of sadness and discomfort. The execution of the keyboards is masterful that in combination with the other instruments moves us through time and the serious tones of Dianne make us witness the scene in our minds.

The Beheading

The outcome of this first part is presented, continuing with the execution of acoustic notes denoting tranquillity as Anne Boleyn remembered the moment in which she met Henry VIII, however, this harmony is broken with the introduction of the electrical part describing the fall of her reign, the final judgment and its subsequent decapitation. Dianne's tone of voice changes constantly bringing drama to the song. The speed of the drums and the guitar accentuate the theatricality with which the album was made.

PART TWO: ANASTASIA ROMANOVA

The Motherland

We made a trip through time and space presenting the second character that makes up this album. Lyrically it describes the scenario where her life unfolds and in the same way it recounts her father's trip after hearing the news of the birth of his fourth son... who was also a woman and was baptized as Anastasia Romanova. The song begins with a chorus of voices as if the curtain of this musical work was raised, Dianne makes use of her lyrical voice in certain fragments influenced notably by the symphonic metal characteristic of the Netherlands. The atmosphere that is created by combining acoustic and electric parts in the song begins to convince us that we are facing the best Ex Libris album. The solo that comes in the middle is spectacular.

The Healer

Dianne van Giersbergen begins this song using a series of acute notes, again the influence of symphonic metal is present adding a dramatic and theatrical touch opening the next chapter in the life of Anastasia Romanova in which the presence of Grigori Rasputin in her life who entered the Russian monarchy to reduce the discomforts of hemophilia suffered by his brother Alexei and which Anastasia had a great affection and that through the different shades in the voice of his singer we can identify the feeling he professed and that to the rhythm of the other musical instruments accompany this swing of emotions. In the last minute of the song, the double drum bass drum played by Harmen Kieboom accompanied by Luuk van Gerven's bass is emphasized in which his vocalist uses a lyrical voice describing Rasputin's assassination.

The Exile

This song closes the second part of this album and moves us to the Russian Revolution in which he recounts the last months of Anastasia Romanova's life in the company of her family and culminated in their execution. The beginning of this song begins with a combination of guitar, drums and keyboard chords continuing with the climax that was triggered with The Healer. Dianne surprises playing with different tones of voice trying to describe from Anastasia's vision the feelings found after the captivity they lived in Yekaterinburg. There is only one executed by Koem Stam changing the rhythm in a drastic way with melodic tones and beginning to tell the episode where each of the family members is shot, Dianne's voiceover highlights in a masterful way the emotions lived by Anastasia to see how each member of the family fell dead. The song culminates with a choir accompanied by its vocalist indicating the sad end of this historical character.

PART THREE: ANNE FRANK

The Diary

Some bells welcome us to Germany in the context of World War II and introduces us to the life of the last character described in this trilogy: Anne Frank. This ballad that highlights the use of the piano that accompanies Dianne's sweet lyric voice describes the diary Anne Frank wrote during the time she remained hidden with her family in Amsterdam and where she related her experience while escaping from the Nazis. This song does not present changes in its rhythm compared to others presented in this album. At the last minute a fragment of the Dutch diary is presented describing the daily life of the Jews at that time.

The Annex

With a beginning characterized using the guitar in different shades accompanied by the drums and the bass we are introduced to the building where the Frank, Van Daan and Menner Dussel families lived hidden from the Nazis. The song describes the helplessness that Anne Frank felt about the war situation in the Netherlands, as well as the nostalgia generated by leaving family and friends behind. At the end of the instrumentation with which the song begins, Dianne's voice is added as a ballad and that takes power when she reaches the choir with the use of her already characteristic lyrical voice. Fragments of the Dutch newspaper are presented in which the sentiment of the protagonists of this story is mentioned.

The Raid

The beginning of the end of both the story of Anne Frank and this album begins. The song starts with an orchestration marked by Bob Wijtsma's guitar, listening in the background to the sound of an ambulance siren trying to recreate the stage where this story is taking place. A news narrated in Dutch by Dianne marking the beginning of the Battle of Normandy that marked a light of hope for Anne Frank one day dreaming of being free. Fragments in Dutch also accompany this song that show some passages from the newspaper such as Ana's aspirations to be a writer and to publish her diary after the war, as well as feelings towards Peter Van Daan. This song features a spectacular closing guitar riffs, a single of keyboards and a battery that denotes aggressiveness accompanied by a series of voices that tear pain and despair illustrate the arrest of the occupants of the annex and were taken to different Nazi concentration camps, in that place lived their last days. Dianne's melodic choir culminates this work of art.

My Recommendation

Ex Libris have developed one of their best musical works. A theatrical, dramatic and emotional album that illustrates in the mind of those who listen to the life of each of these women in modern and contemporary history. The technique with which each of the musical instruments is used, as well as the different tones of voice give it identity and the progressive metal that defines its style is influenced by other musical currents. A disc widely recommended for those who like the combination between rock and opera.

BIO OFICIAL:

Ex Libris ingresó al mundo del heavy metal en 2004. Provenientes de los Países Bajos, un país conocido por su gran y diversa escena female fronted, se destaca como una voz única dentro del género. La soprano de formación clásica Dianne van Giersbergen se eleva y susurra a lo largo de canciones grandes y rimbombantes que no solo son impresionantes en longitud, sino también en potencia pura y poder. Hay un amplio espacio para lamer progresivamente, melodías y solos junto a paisajes sonoros atmosféricos y relajantes. Pero no se equivoquen, ponen el pedal al metal. Los fuertes tambores de contrabajo, los riffs furiosos y las voces terriblemente intensas se combinan para hacer de Ex Libris una fuerza singular en el mundo de la música femenina. Espere una musicalidad completa, una composición épica, una dinámica extrema y todo el espectro emocional de una de las sopranos más talentosas de los Países Bajos.

PRIMERA PARTE: ANA BOLENA.

The Courtship

Se introduce a este recorrido histórico-musical a través de las guitarras influenciadas por el metal progresivo que ha caracterizado el sonido de la banda relatando el episodio amoroso que Ana Bolena tuvo con Enrique VIII. La formación clásica de Dianne van Giersbergen le aporta algunos tintes sinfónicos a la canción jugando con diferentes tonos de voz tratando de recrear las emociones vividas en dicho acontecimiento histórico. La combinación de los teclados ejecutados por Koem Stam y la guitarra de Bob Wijtsma esta bien lograda en conjunto con la voz en off de su vocalista.

The Miscarriage

En esta canción se describen los abortos que sufrió Ana Bolena en su intento de procrear un hijo con Enrique VIII, la atmósfera que crea la canción nos hace imaginar al personaje principal desbordando un sentimiento de tristeza y molestia. La ejecución de los teclados es magistral que en combinación con los otros instrumentos nos traslada a través del tiempo y los tonos graves de Dianne nos hacen presenciar la escena en nuestras mentes.

The Beheading

Se presenta el desenlace de esta primera parte continuando con la ejecución de notas acústicas denotando tranquilidad como si Ana Bolena recordara el momento en que se encontró con Enrique VIII, no obstante, esta armonía se rompe con la introducción de la parte eléctrica describiendo la caída de su reinado, el juicio final y su posterior decapitación. El tono de voz de Dianne cambia constantemente aportándole dramatismo a la canción. La velocidad de la batería y la guitarra acentúan la teatralidad con la que fue realizado el álbum.

SEGUNDA PARTE: ANASTASIA ROMANOVA

The Motherland

Realizamos un viaje a través del tiempo y del espacio presentando al segundo personaje que conforma este álbum. Líricamente describe el escenario donde se desarrolla su vida y de la misma forma relata el viaje que realizó su padre tras conocer la noticia del nacimiento de su cuarto hijo… que también fue una mujer y fue bautizada como Anastasia Romanova. La canción comienza con un coro de voces como si se levantara el telón de esta obra musical, Dianne hace empleo de su voz lírica en determinados fragmentos influenciada notablemente por el metal sinfónico característico de los Países Bajos. La atmósfera que se crea al combinar parte acústicas y eléctricas en la canción empiezan a convencernos que estamos frente al mejor álbum de Ex Libris. El solo que se presenta en el intermedio es espectacular.

The Healer

Dianne van Giersbergen comienza esta canción empleando una serie de notas agudas, nuevamente la influencia del metal sinfónico está presente agregándole un toque dramático y teatral dando apertura al siguiente capítulo en la vida de Anastasia Romanova en el que se relata la presencia de Grigori Rasputín en su vida quien ingresó a la monarquía rusa para reducir los malestares de la hemofilia que padecía su hermano Alexis y de quién Anastasia sentía un gran cariño y que a través de los diferentes tonalidades en la voz de su cantante podemos identificar el sentimiento que le profesaba y que al ritmo de los demás instrumentos musicales acompañan este vaivén de emociones. En el último minuto de la canción se enfatiza el doble bombo de la batería ejecutada por Harmen Kieboom acompañado del bajo de Luuk van Gerven en el que su vocalista utiliza una voz lírica describiendo el asesinato de Rasputín.

The Exile

Esta canción cierra la segunda parte de este disco y nos traslada a la Revolución Rusa en la que relata los últimos meses de vida de Anastasia Romanova en compañía de su familia y que culminó con su fusilamiento. El inicio de esta canción comienza con una combinación de acordes de guitarra, batería y teclado continuando con el clímax que se desencadenó con The Healer. Dianne sorprende jugando con diferentes tonos de voz tratando de describir desde la visión de Anastasia los sentimientos encontrados tras el cautiverio que vivieron en Ekaterimburgo. Se presenta un solo ejecutado por Koem Stam cambiando el ritmo de una forma drástica con tonos melódicos y comenzando a relatar el episodio donde se fusila a cada uno de los miembros de familia, la voz en off de Dianne destaca de una forma magistral las emociones vivida por Anastasia al ver cómo cada integrante de la familia caía muerto. La canción culmina con un coro acompañados por su vocalista indicando el triste final de este personaje histórico.

TERCERA PARTE: ANA FRANK

The Diary

Unas campanadas nos dan la bienvenida a Alemania en el contexto de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y nos introduce a la vida del último personaje descrito en esta trilogía: Ana Frank. Esta balada en la que destaca el empleo del piano que acompaña a la dulce voz lírica de Dianne describe el diario que escribió durante el tiempo que permaneció oculta junto a su familia en Ámsterdam, Países Bajos y donde relató su experiencia al escapar de los nazis. Esta canción no presenta cambios en su rítmica a comparación de otras presentadas en este álbum. En el último minuto se presenta un fragmento del diario en holandés donde se describía la vida cotidiana de los judíos en aquella época.

The Annex

Con un inicio caracterizado por el empleo de la guitarra en diferentes tonalidades acompañados por la batería y el bajo nos introducen al edificio donde las familias Frank, Van Daan y Menner Dussel vivieron ocultos de los nazis. La canción describe la impotencia que sentía Ana Frank ante la situación de guerra que se vivía en Países Bajos, así como la nostalgia generada al dejar atrás a familiares y amigos. Al término de la instrumentación con la que comienza la canción se agrega la voz de Dianne a manera de balada y que toma potencia al llegara al coro con empleo de su ya característica voz lírica. Se presenta fragmentos del diario en holandés en el que se menciona el sentimiento que viven los protagonistas de esta historia.

The Raid

Comienza el principio del fin tanto de la historia de Ana Frank como de este álbum. La canción arranca con una orquestación marcada por la guitarra de Bob Wijtsma escuchando de fondo el sonido de una sirena de ambulancia tratando de recrear el escenario donde se está desarrollando esta historia. Una noticia narrada en holandés por Dianne marcando el inicio de la Batalla de Normandía que marcó una luz de esperanza para Ana Frank soñando algún día con ser libre. Fragmentos en holandés también acompañan esta canción que muestran algunos pasajes del diario como las aspiraciones de Ana de ser escritora y de publicar su diario después de la guerra, así como los sentimientos hacia Peter Van Daan. Esta canción presenta un cierre espectacular riffs de guitarra, un solo de teclados y una batería que denota agresividad acompañados de una serie de voces que desgarran dolor y desesperación ilustran la detención de los ocupantes del anexo y fueron llevados a diferentes campos de concentración nazi, en ese lugar vivieron sus últimos días. El coro melódico de Dianne culmina esta obra de arte.

Mi Recomendación

Ex Libris ha desarrollado uno de sus mejores trabajos musicales. Un álbum teatral, dramático y emocional que ilustra en la mente de quien lo escucha la vida de cada una de estas mujeres de la historia moderna y contemporánea. La técnica con la que emplean cada uno de los instrumentos musicales, así como las diferentes tonalidades de voz le dan identidad y el metal progresivo que definen su estilo es influenciado por otras corrientes musicales. Un disco ampliamente recomendado para quienes gustan de la combinación entre rock y ópera.
