Vocalist and lyricist of "Blind Hex", a Symphonic Neo Metal band from Mexico that starts in 2021 with Federico d'Empaire and Sharon Portilla as founders of the project.
Sharon releases her first single as a solo artist entitled "Hypatia" in 2020. A project written and composed by her where she exposes esoteric, social psychology, spiritual, human themes and more, moving through diverse musical genres, among which world music, symphonic, folk, pop and electronic music, so with you the interview with Sharon Portilla!
Hello Sharon! Thank you very much for having you in this your musical space! How have you been?
Sharon:
Thanks to you, to Darkzen Dragon Metal Angels for the space to share. Right now I feel very well, fortunately, my family and friends too. I'm still working on several things.
Tell us more about yourself! How was your musical path?
Sharon:
Music has always been part of my life and family. I have always wanted to make music. My grandfather was a tenor and voice teacher so he used to vocalize me when I was very young; I also had the pleasure and opportunity to see my uncle singing in some of the Beaux-Arts operas.
Later, when I was approximately thirteen years old, I began my personal and individual path as a singer.
This road has been, and continues to be, one full of surprises. This race is very generous in general, in many ways.
I have been working on various projects and with people of such diverse character who have given me so much over time and in such a constant way that the lessons, the moments, the friends, the achievements, disappointments and more become part of my formation.
How was your vocal education?
Sharon:
I started preparing myself with private singing lessons at home, later I nurtured this musical search by taking theater and singing workshops at school. I was part of a choir and then my first rock project.
I studied Dramatic Literature and Theater at UNAM where I also took singing classes with various teachers and vocal techniques.
I attended music workshops, sang in cultural spaces and ventured into theater and film production areas.
Then I started working as a TV, film and theater actress. By then I was singing in several projects of different genres that allowed me to explore other musical areas and, meanwhile, I continued to complement my studies with theoretical classes such as: Approach to the written word, lyrics and writing workshop, among other subjects.
Do you have any hobbies, hobbies? Or just the acting and music.
Sharon:
I enjoy the moments of rest. I value them very much.
I love woodsy spaces and cold weather so I like to plan weekend getaways every chance I get.
They inspire and relax me.
I love going to the cinema and being surprised by the photography of many films that are impressive, as well as the costumes and color palettes, etc.
Do you have your favorite singers? Who are they?
Sharon:
I like many! But the ones I listen to the most are Eivør Pálsdóttir, Corey Tayler, Roy Khan, Franky Perez, Layne Staley, Ronnie Radke, Adele, Tina Turner, Pink, Anneke, Amy Lee, Tarja Turunen, Simone Simons, Courtney LaPlante, and several more.
Favorite bands within Metal? Any other music style?
Sharon:
My favorite bands today are Spiritbox, Slipknot, Jinjer, The Gathering, In this Moment, Falling in Reverse, Linkin Park, Bring me the Horizon, Epica, Nightwish, Mudvayne, Within temptation and many more of the same kind. Just as I love the work of Agnes Obel, SYML, Eivør Pálsdóttir, Loreena McKennit, Bjork and Emma Shapplin. I listen to a lot of pop, nu metal, world music, acoustic versions, instrumentals. Of that mainly.
Tell us about your band Blind Hex, why did the band and its musical proposal arise? And your musical style of Symphonic Neo Metal?
Sharon:
Blind Hex is a neo-symphonic metal project that Federico Suárez and I started, which practically came out in 2021.
Fede and I met through Lex Ojeda, a very good music producer and friend. He introduced us when I was looking to produce my solo project Hypatia. Later, throughout the recording process with Hypatia, and discovering many musical affinities, that we have very good work synergy and a nice friendship, we decided to create our own neo-symphonic metal project. One where we could shape our vision.
We decided to offer this musical proposal under that definition because, in general, the basis of composition on which he and I work is based on our tastes for symphonic metal. However, we do include and fuse elements from genres such as pop, progressive, nu metal, classical music, world music, and notably electronic music.
The single you released a year ago from Revenant (Official Audio), is it included in an EP or maybe an album? Or is it just a single as such?
Sharon:
Sorrowless was the first single that we released and, furthermore, with which we launched the project publicly.
Revenant and our most recent release Eleven will of course be part of our album. They are all singles from what will be our debut album.
How is the acceptance of Revenant in Mexico and in other parts of the world?
Sharon:
Fortunately, it has been a very well received single in general and with quite positive reviews. That makes us very happy because it is one of the songs that complements this album very strongly.
Sharon is working on any new production right now?
Sharon:
At the moment I am focused on the production of our debut album as Blind Hex and my solo EP which is Hypatia.
And also, along the way, there are always wonderful collaboration opportunities that are well worth exploring.
How do you see the metal scene currently in Mexico and after this relaxation of security measures due to the pandemic?
Sharon:
Many projects were born during the pandemic (us, for example) and, since activities are gradually resuming, fortunately, we have the opportunity to start showing the material live and not only through spotity, youtube and the rest.
I am convinced that many national projects are currently re-emerging with great force, ups and downs as well, but with great enthusiasm. I have many friends from the scene in my networks and I follow almost all of them. I see that there is a lot of movement, new spaces through the internet and more.
I think that in general we are seeking to continue showing that we are present and that we intend to continue with the search, more opportunities and more spaces.
Do you have any date, event or concert in these months?
Sharon:
This year 2022 started really very promising and yes, indeed, this year we will have the opportunity to play live for the first time.
What do you say to your fans?
Sharon:
I love surprising them with new material every time.
I have always tried to give them respect and a lot of gratitude. Completely reciprocal to what I have received from them, which is a lot of support. Both in networks and personally, when the opportunity to share is given. I really enjoy your warmth.
Despite the fact that the music I make as a soloist is to share part of my vision as a human being and, also, a creative need for expression, they have received it with great openness and embraced it with positive reviews. Same for Blind Hex.
That is why I always try to ensure that the material I offer them is of good quality and with the intention that they keep that part of me as an artist. Leave them with “a good taste in their mouths”, so to speak.

Vocalista y letrista de "Blind Hex", banda de Symphonic Neo Metal de México que inicia en 2021 con Federico d'Empaire y Sharon Portilla como fundadores del proyecto.
Sharon lanza su primer sencillo como solista titulado "Hypatia" en 2020. Proyecto escrito y compuesto por ella donde expone temas esotéricos, de psicología social, espirituales, humanos y más, transitando por géneros musicales diversos entre los cuales destaca el world music, sinfónico, folk, pop y música electrónica, así que con ustedes la entrevista con Sharon Portilla!
¡Hola Sharon! ¡Muchas gracias por tenerte en este tu espacio musical! ¿Cómo has estado?
Sharon:
Gracias a ustedes, a Darkzen Dragon Metal Angels por el espacio para compartir. Ahora mismo me encuentro muy bien afortunadamente, mi familia y amigos también. Continúo trabajando en varias cosas aún.
¡Cuéntanos más de ti! ¿Cómo fue tu camino musical?
Sharon:
La música siempre ha formado parte de mi vida y familia. Siempre he buscado hacer música. Mi abuelo era tenor y maestro de canto así que él me vocalizaba cuando yo estaba muy joven; también tuve el gusto y la oportunidad de ver a mi tío cantando en algunas óperas de Bellas Artes.
Después, a mis trece años aproximadamente, inicié mi camino personal e individual como cantante.
Este camino ha sido, y sigue siendo, uno lleno de sorpresas. Esta carrera es muy generosa en general, en muchos sentidos.
He estado trabajando en diversos proyectos y con personas de carácter tan diverso que me han aportado mucho a lo largo del tiempo y de manera tan constante que, las lecciones, los momentos, los amigos, los logros, decepciones y más, se vuelven parte de mi formación.
¿Cómo fue tu educación vocal?
Sharon:
Empecé preparándome con clases particulares de canto en casa, posteriormente alimenté esta búsqueda musical tomando talleres de teatro y canto en la escuela. Formé parte de un coro y después mi primer proyecto de rock.
Estudié Literatura Dramática y Teatro en la UNAM donde, además, tomaba clases de canto con diversos maestros y técnicas vocales.
Cursé talleres de música, canté en espacios culturales e incursioné en áreas de producción de teatro y cine.
Después empecé a laborar como actriz de tv, cine y teatro. Para entonces yo cantaba en varios proyectos de diferentes géneros que me permitieron explorar otras áreas musicales y, mientras tanto, seguía complementando mis estudios con clases teóricas como: Acercamiento a la palabra escrita, taller de letras y redacción, entre otras materias.
¿Tienes alguna afición, pasatiempos? O solo la actuación y música.
Sharon:
Disfruto los momentos de descanso. Los valoro mucho.
Me encantan los espacios boscosos y el clima frío así que me gusta planear escapes de fin de semana en cada oportunidad que tengo.
Me inspiran y relajan.
Amo ir al cine y sorprenderme con la fotografía de muchos films que son impresionantes, así los vestuarios y las paletas de colores, etc.
¿Tienes a tus cantantes favoritos? ¿Quiénes son?
Sharon:
¡Me gustan muchos! Pero los que más escucho son Eivør Pálsdóttir, Corey Tayler, Roy Khan, Franky Perez, Layne Staley, Ronnie Radke, Adele, Tina Turner, Pink, Anneke, Amy Lee, Tarja Turunen, Simone Simons, Courtney LaPlante, y varios más.
¿Bandas favoritas dentro del Metal? ¿Algún otro estilo musical?
Sharon:
De mis bandas favoritas hoy son Spiritbox, Slipknot, Jinjer, The Gathering, In this Moment, Falling in Reverse, Linkin Park, Bring me the Horizon, Epica, Nightwish, Mudvayne, Within temptation y muchas más del estilo. Así como amo el trabajo de Agnes Obel, SYML, Eivør Pálsdóttir, Loreena McKennit, Bjork y Emma Shapplin. Escucho mucho pop, nu metal, world music, versiones acústicas, instrumentales. De eso principalmente.
Cuéntanos de tu banda Blind Hex, ¿Por qué surge la banda y su propuesta musical? ¿Y su estilo musical de Symphonic Neo Metal?
Sharon:
Blind Hex es un proyecto de metal neo sinfónico que iniciamos Federico Suárez y yo, el cual prácticamente salió a la luz en 2021.
Fede y yo nos conocimos por medio de Lex Ojeda, muy buen productor musical y amigo. Nos presentó cuando yo buscaba producir mi proyecto solista Hypatia. Posteriormente, a lo largo del proceso de grabación con Hypatia, y descubriendo muchas afinidades musicales, que tenemos muy buena sinergia laboral y una linda amistad, decidimos crear nuestro propio proyecto de Metal neo sinfónico. Uno donde pudiéramos plasmar nuestra visión.
Decidimos ofrecer esta propuesta musical bajo esa definición porque, en general, la base de composición sobre la que trabajamos él y yo está basada en nuestros gustos por el metal sinfónico. Sin embargo, incluimos y fusionamos elementos de géneros como el pop, progre, nu metal, música clásica, world music y, notablemente, música electrónica.
El sencillo que lanzaron hace un año de Revenant (Official Audio), ¿está contemplado dentro de algún EP o quizás un álbum? ¿O solo es un sencillo como tal?
Sharon:
Sorrowless fue el primer sencillo que estrenamos y, además, con el que lanzamos el proyecto de manera pública.
Revenant y nuestro estreno más reciente, Eleven, formarán por supuesto, parte de nuestro álbum. Todos son singles del que será nuestro álbum debut.
¿Qué tal la aceptación de Revenant en México y en otras partes del Mundo?
Sharon:
Afortunadamente ha sido un single muy bien recibido en general y con críticas bastante positivas. Eso nos alegra muchísimo porque es uno de los temas que complementan este álbum con mucha fuerza.
Sharon está trabajando en alguna nueva producción en estos momentos?
Sharon:
De momento estoy enfocada en la producción de nuestro álbum debut como Blind Hex y mi EP como solista que es Hypatia.
Y también, a lo largo del camino, siempre se aparecen oportunidades para hacer colaboraciones maravillosas que vale mucho la pena explorar.
¿Cómo ves la escena del metal actualmente en México y después de esta relajación de las medidas de seguridad por la pandemia?
Sharon:
Muchos proyectos nacieron durante la pandemia (nosotros, por ejemplo) y, a partir de que ya las actividades poco a poco se reanudan, afortunadamente, tenemos la oportunidad de empezar a mostrar el material en vivo y no sólo a través de spotity, youtube y demás.
Estoy convencida de que actualmente muchos proyectos nacionales están resurgiendo con mucha fuerza, altas y bajas también, pero con mucha ilusión. Tengo muchos amigos de la escena en mis redes y los sigo casi a todos. Veo que hay mucho movimiento, nuevos espacios a través de internet y más.
Creo que en general estamos buscando seguir manifestando que estamos presentes y que pretendemos continuar con la búsqueda, más oportunidades y más espacios.
¿Tienes alguna fecha, evento o concierto en estos meses?
Sharon:
Este año 2022 empezó realmente muy prometedor y sí, en efecto, este año tendremos la oportunidad de tocar en vivo por primera vez.
¿Qué les dices a tus fans?
Sharon:
Me encanta sorprenderlos con material nuevo cada vez.
Siempre he procurado regalarles respeto y mucho agradecimiento. Completamente recíproco al que he recibido, por parte de ellos, que es muchísimo apoyo. Tanto en redes como personalmente, cuando se da la oportunidad de compartir. Disfruto mucho de su calidez.
A pesar de que la música que hago como solista es para compartir parte de mi visión como ser humano y, también, una necesidad creativa y de expresión, ellos la han recibido con mucha apertura y abrazado con críticas positivas. Lo mismo para con Blind Hex.
Por ello siempre procuro que el material que les ofrezco sea de buena calidad y con la intención de que se queden con esa parte de mí como artista. Dejarlos con “un buen sabor de boca”, por así decir.
¿Algo más que nos quieras compartir Sharon?
Sharon:
