Dead bodies acting like people, we’re the possessed, a sound, a society.
Hailing from Toronto and flaunting a deep personal relationship with the pageantry of the macabre, Phantom High is already making their mark on a scene that too often leaves the “fun” out of “dysfunction”. The band has launched with a mission statement to bring authenticity, conviction and theatrics back to a genre that centers on navel-gazing and nihilism.
The roots of their inspiration are easy to see for veterans of the golden days of goth and glam, drawing energy as much from horror in film, anime and literature as from the music genres that inform their hard-hitting live show
Phantom High is anarchistic alchemy, bringing together the fundamental elements of what scares us, what turns us on and what makes us hungry for substance in an ephemeral, digital world that no longer seems interested in keeping the blood pumping, the volume loud and the music in each and every face.
Phantom High prides themselves on putting the music and the show first and foremost, staying true to their roots while planting new ones like mausoleums in the fertile ground of a whole new generation desperate for something to scream along to.

How and what are the musical origins and influences of Phantom High?
PHigh:
I think it probably started with Korn, I was really inspired by Orgy’s first few albums, Linkin Park's first few, Deftones, The Birthday Massacre, Vanity Beach, Android Lust, but even pop music like Gaga, and stuff written by Max Martin.

Mostly Ñu Metal, very good!
Why the name of the band like that? Phantom High
PHigh:
In 2016 Seven and I were in our final months of college for Electronics Engineering. We were on break and had been binging anime series! We were looking for a new series and came across “Black Butler” on Netflix. The main character was named Ciel “Phantomhive”, which initially upon hearing I misheard as “Phantomhigh”, I thought “WHOA! this is the wickedest name for a band!”
It blew my mind, because we were pursuing an aesthetic that was based somewhere in suburban/urban highschool creep squad meets “Warriors” or “Joker Gang”, and “Phantom High” was perfect! I was so happy to learn that it was in fact “Phantomhive” in the series, I ganked it immediately!

Anime is great!!
The concept of the band is great and it is really what we are currently going through in the world, do you think the digital age modifies a lot to everyone? And to the music?
PHigh:
It certainly does, everything is so finely tuned in their appearance and music.
As for the music, with the lack of funding, the disappearance of artist development and record sales, if you can’t afford to pay a studio or producer, you're done before you start. So being able to work in DAWs like Logic etc, and being able to learn to write, record and produce ourselves is very liberating.
We use a lot of stuff in our production, it’s the new paradigm, I grew up in the old one, so I got my discipline and knowledge, but I embrace new things and hang on less to my analog roots, as in many ways the differences are negligible.
Why use makeup or mask? for everyone in the band.
PHigh:
It had never been something we considered previously, but after taking on “Phantom High” as a name, we were watching an anime called Knights Of Sidonia (also on Netflix) and the elite societal members wore these masks, and the stoic expression, in dire moments, really resonated with me. I thought, wow that’s really powerful. So we thought, with all the “minimalistic” aesthetics that are common, let's do something theatrical, let's make our shows an experience!
At the same time, we’d been 3 years or so in search of a vocalist. I (Peril) am a guitarist/writer and I thought I would find a cool mask and stand in as a sort of “muse” or “placeholder” in photos, and when we found “the one” for a front person, I would step back to guitar, and the replacement would don the mask and nobody would really notice (aside from the replacement being a much better singer LOL). But I practiced and honed, and at the end, we couldn’t find anyone that matched the conviction of Peril’s stage persona. So we stayed with it.
The masks in the band were an afterthought, but we opted to get rid of them with the exception of Peril. We aren’t trying to be Slipknot, or Mushroomhead or Hollywood Undead, we don’t sound like them, and that’s not where our influence came from. It’s really Peril, and the statement of expression that powers our aesthetic.
Peril, why do you use the mask?
Peril:
A lot of this is in the previous question, but I stuck with the mask because I like that it’s both attractive and creepy at the same time. I like that wearing a pretty face turns on and terrifies. I love the irony of wearing a prosthetic face in the “selfie era”. Many will miss the sarcastic nature of our band, The same goes for the “poppy” and effected vocal melodies, I do it for the brazen contrast.
Darkzen:
Well, this way of looking at it is excellent and I agree.
What does Peril like about the horror genre?
Peril:
I love the cathartic nature of Horror, I’m not really into the gore aspect, I am inspired by the occult and the spiritualism behind it. Many people deny the dark aspects of life, and in doing so, they lose perspective of the light in contrast. I was taken in and mentored by a Jamaican witch many years ago, and ultimately, I gained a lot of knowledge that anchors me to darker aspects of life, but instead of freaking people out, I use “Horror” culture as a more subtle facade for my dark nature.

Wow! Excellent point of view, because we are already two dark lords…. Trust me….
Tell us about your new single Black Divine song, did you write it? On what was the basis for making the song? And it's curious the lyrics are not as extensive as other songs commonly.
Peril:
I’m glad you caught that about the lyrical content. It is a much less complex song lyrically than most of our other tracks, Black Divine, broadly, and metaphorically, this song is about weathering oppressive social conditioning, by way of cathartic expression. The ancient Egyptians use the term Sacred or Divine Feminine to describe the force behind many of the arts. “Black Divine” is a take on that philosophy or belief, and because it also references gender in a non-binary framing, I really liked the way it all tied in.
I wrote the verses “eyes are rolling, eyes patrolling”, talking about being mocked, and being singled out as not normal, this is often how I feel in social settings. I made the verses extra “poppy” and over the top to feel prosthetic, and a little fake, in conjunction with how I feel pretending to be “normal”. The song is simply a tribute to my dark passenger, because she has been the one place I could turn to when I didn’t feel like suffering my “reality”. When I feel weak, I remember that I am her, and I feel empowered.
Metaphorically there is a duality, but for me personally, in a literal sense, I wrote the song about being someone else inside and having to hide it all my life, for the nasty people who watch for people who don’t fit into their box, and then “come for them”, the stone-throwers, it’s my way of saying, “I see you waiting for me, but I don’t care, I’m not afraid”. I’ll fight you while I’m listening to Britney Spears! LOL -Peril
The production, mixing, and musical arrangements were done by your Peril, how long did it take you to do this?
Peril:
Varying times with different songs, this one I wrote and recorded the music in 2016, but only got around to writing lyrics and formatting the arrangement in Spring 2020. I have literally hundreds of tracks, many fully written, others parts or just music. I regularly listen and vibe off of them, and sometimes the time is just right, and I write then record the vocals on the spot. I probably wrote this in a couple of hours, but spent a few days messing with production and finding where I wanted things to sit.
I also know that you just started making several singles from different musical genres, especially I was struck by the Lady Gaga, because she and that song?
Peril:
I love to reimagine pop music. I am a huge pop fan, I love Madonna, Gaga, Britney, the last month has been Miley Cyrus, I love this Stevie Nicks meets Pat Benatar thing she is doing. Gaga has always resonated with me, I love the flamboyant “I can do this ridiculous thing, and still make it look good” type of confidence. I love fashion, and I love powerful women, I find it very attractive!
Are you working on any other single? Any other super video?
Peril:
Many other singles are ready to go, just figuring out how to do the videos and what to release as far as format, singles, EPs, etc. This was our first video, I love it aesthetically, but I think the articulation and content is glazed over. The next one will be a more thought out correlation.
And well the main question, are you working on a complete album? If so, that will have the album especially if you can tell!
Peril:
I absolutely love the idea of an album, I also love the idea of going into the studio with a producer that gets us, and really delving into the creative process, experimenting and pushing boundaries. But I don’t know where and when this will align. So I will say it’s on our bucket list for the future. But tentatively likely just sporadic singles and EPs.

Peril:

El Anime es genial!!
El concepto de banda es genial y es realmente lo que estamos atravesando actualmente en el mundo, ¿crees que la era digital modifica mucho a todos? ¿Y a la música?
PHigh:
Ciertamente lo hace, todo está tan finamente afinado en su apariencia y música.
En cuanto a la música, con la falta de financiación, la desaparición del desarrollo del artista y las ventas de discos, si no puedes permitirte pagar a un estudio o productor, has terminado antes de empezar. Así que poder trabajar en DAW como Logic, etc., y poder aprender a escribir, grabar y producir nosotros mismos es muy liberador.
Usamos muchas cosas en nuestra producción, es el nuevo paradigma, crecí en lo antiguo, así que obtuve mi disciplina y conocimiento, pero acepto cosas nuevas y me aferro menos a mis raíces analógicas, como en muchos sentidos en las diferencias son insignificantes.
¿Por qué usar maquillaje o mascarilla? para todos en la banda.
PHigh:
Nunca había sido algo que consideráramos anteriormente, pero después de tomar "Phantom High" como nombre, estábamos viendo un anime llamado Knights Of Sidonia (también en Netflix) y los miembros de la élite de la sociedad usaban estas máscaras, y la expresión estoica, en momentos terribles, realmente resonaron en mí. Pensé, guau, eso es realmente poderoso. Entonces pensamos, con toda la estética “minimalista” que es común, hagamos algo teatral, ¡hagamos de nuestros shows una experiencia!
Al mismo tiempo, llevábamos unos 3 años buscando un vocalista. Pero practiqué y perfeccioné, y al final, no pudimos encontrar a nadie que coincidiera con la convicción de la personalidad escénica de Peril. Así que nos quedamos con eso.
Las máscaras de la banda fueron una ocurrencia tardía, pero optamos por deshacernos de ellas con la excepción de Peril. No estamos tratando de ser Slipknot, o Mushroomhead o Hollywood Undead, no sonamos como ellos, y no es de ahí de donde vino nuestra influencia. Es realmente Peril, y el enunciado de expresión que impulsa nuestra estética.
Peril, ¿por qué usas la máscara?
Peril:
Mucho de esto está en la pregunta anterior, pero me quedé con la máscara porque me gusta que sea atractiva y espeluznante al mismo tiempo. Me gusta llevar una cara bonita que enciende y aterroriza. Me encanta la ironía de llevar una prótesis facial en la “era de los selfies”. Muchos extrañarán la naturaleza sarcástica de nuestra banda. Lo mismo ocurre con las melodías vocales “poppy” y efectivas, yo lo hago por el descarado contraste.

Pues quedo excelente esta forma de verlo y de acuerdo.
¿Qué le gusta a Peril del género de terror?
Peril:
Me encanta la naturaleza catártica del terror, no me gusta mucho el aspecto gore, me inspira lo oculto y el espiritualismo que hay detrás de él. Muchas personas niegan los aspectos oscuros de la vida y, al hacerlo, pierden la perspectiva de la luz en contraste. Una bruja jamaicana me acogió y me enseñó hace muchos años y, en última instancia, obtuve una gran cantidad de conocimientos que me llevan a aspectos más oscuros de la vida, pero en lugar de asustar a la gente, utilizo la cultura del "terror" como una fachada más sutil. por mi naturaleza oscura.
Darkzen:
Wow! Excelente punto de vista, pues ya somos dos señores oscuros…. Creeme….
Cuéntanos sobre tu nuevo single de Black Divine, ¿lo escribiste? ¿Cuál fue la base para hacer la canción? Y es curioso que las letras no sean tan extensas como otras canciones habitualmente.
Peril:
Me alegra que hayas entendido eso sobre el contenido lírico. Es una canción mucho menos compleja líricamente que la mayoría de nuestras otras pistas, Black Divine, en términos generales y metafóricos, esta canción trata sobre capear el condicionamiento social opresivo, a través de una expresión catártica. Los antiguos egipcios usan el término Sagrado o Divino Femenino para describir la fuerza detrás de muchas de las artes. "Black Divine" es una versión de esa filosofía o creencia, y debido a que también hace referencia al género en un marco no binario, realmente me gustó la forma en que todo encajaba.
Escribí los versos “los ojos están rodando, los ojos patrullando”, hablando de que se burlan de mí y de que me señalan como algo anormal, así es a menudo como me siento en entornos sociales. Hice los versos extra "amapola" y exagerados para que se sintieran protésicos, y un poco falsos, junto con cómo me siento fingiendo ser "normal". La canción es simplemente un tributo a mi pasajera oscura, porque ella ha sido el único lugar al que podía recurrir cuando no tenía ganas de sufrir mi "realidad". Cuando me siento débil, recuerdo que soy ella y me siento empoderada.
Metafóricamente hay una dualidad, pero para mí personalmente, en un sentido literal, escribí la canción sobre ser otra persona dentro y tener que esconderla toda mi vida, para las personas desagradables que buscan a las personas que no encajan en su caja, y luego “ven por ellos”, los tiradores de piedras, es mi forma de decir, “te veo esperándome, pero no me importa, no tengo miedo”. ¡Pelearé contigo mientras escucho a Britney Spears! La producción, la mezcla y los arreglos musicales fueron realizados por ti Peril, ¿Cuánto tiempo te llevó hacer esto?
Peril:
Varias veces con diferentes canciones, está la escribí y grabé la música en 2016, pero solo pude escribir letras y formatear el arreglo en la primavera de 2020. Tengo literalmente cientos de pistas, muchas completamente escritas, otras partes o solo música. Regularmente escucho y vibro con ellos, y a veces es el momento adecuado, y escribo y luego grabo las voces en el acto. ¿Estás trabajando en algún otro single? ¿Algún otro súper vídeo?
Peril:
Muchos otros singles están listos para comenzar, simplemente averiguando cómo hacer los videos y qué lanzar en cuanto a formato, singles, EPs, etc. Este fue nuestro primer video, me encanta estéticamente, pero creo que la articulación y el contenido son vidriado. Pero no sé dónde y cuándo se alineará esto. Así que diré que está en nuestra lista de deseos para el futuro. Pero tentativamente probablemente solo singles y EP esporádicos.
