Adrián Benegas, composer, keyboardist and entrepreneur, was born in March 1, 1989 in Asuncion, Paraguay. Mostly known for being the founder of the international metal project TRAGUL. He started his career into music when he created his first metal project called Pergana back in 2008 which released two EP's. In 2015, he founded Abracadabra, a symphonic metal project featuring Emilie Ragni (Luca Turilli) on vocals. Abracadabra released two EPs, "Forbidden Magic" (2015) and "Samhain Night" (2016).

​

A year after, Adrian founded Tragul and stepped into the professional scene hiring some great artists to collaborate with him such as Alex Holzwarth, Oliver Holzwarth (Blind Guardian), Steve Conley, Zuberoa Aznarez and Sander Zoer. Tragul is musically an innovative band, exploring new non-traditional worlds when it comes to getting their music heard. Tragul’s releases come in a unique “song-by-song” format and even with its brief musical path, the band is recognized for its potential. Since June 2017, the band has released 9 singles, widely acclaimed by critics.

In 2019 and parallel to Tragul, Adrian started the production of his most ambitious project: a debut album, writing all the lyrics, concept and all music by himself.

​

The album also includes the participation of Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Herbie Langhans (Avantasia, Radiant), Henning Basse (Firewind), Zuberoa Aznarez (Diabulus in Musica, Tragul) together with a base line up from Paraguay that includes Sebastian Ramirez (d) and Diego Bogarín (g, Tragul).

One very important feature of the Paraguayan’s debut album is that it’s a conceptual one with a profound meaning, about the tale of an unredeemed soul's journey from the depths of its own hell to the edge of inner paradise, seeking self-realization. You can say this album gives an insight into the human journey itself, the ups and downs, finally finding the light at the end of the tunnel.

“The Revenant” was produced by Adrian Benegas, and mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen, except for track 1, “Servants Of The Death” which was mixed by Alberto Bravin and mastered by Maor Appelbaum. Artwork by Carlos Fides @ Artside Studio.

Hi Roberto, thank you for the interview! It is a pleasure to answer your questions as always.

Tell me how the idea of ​​solo debut with this new album came about?

​

To be honest, all this from the album emerged in an unthinkable way up to a point, my original idea was to release singles just like we do in Tragul, but with male vocalists. And so it was at the beginning, I started working on a song called “Servants of the Death” with Ralf Scheepers on vocals and a line up of Paraguayan musicians, Seba Ramírez on drums and Diego Bogarín (Tragul) on bass and guitar. As I mentioned, my idea was to make this a parallel project to Tragul, but with the same format independently. Everything was on track for launch at the beginning of the year, even, there was already a release date, imagine! But suddenly, I received a couple of emails that changed everything ... A few record labels were attentive to this project and proposed the idea of ​​making an album, and that's when I thought "why not?". From there I proposed that they give me some time to produce the album and that is how I locked myself up for 4 months, 24 hours a day to compose and have it ready for this year. Looking back I can say it was crazy! 4 months to write the concept, lyrics, music, arrangements and record everything from vocals to drums, something for which I feel quite proud and very satisfied with the result, you will hear it.

 

What is the theme and / or concept for this album? What did you rely on to make the lyrics?

Well, this concept although I sat down to mature it for a few months and finish it as I mentioned before, I already had it stored in the subconscious, it was something that always seduced me. Make an album based or rather inspired by the epic story of the DIVINE COMEDY of DANTE ALIGHIERI. You know, this concept of descending to the inner hell (as I understand it) and purifying from the inside searching tirelessly for the liberation of the essence immersed in our fears, egos, etc., is something that I have always very present ... And that's how I decided to use that to be able to tell something interesting and turn it into music.

Do we have an interesting album, with the combination of several very talented musicians, how was this alliance and why?

​

Simple, I needed several voices to be able to represent the characters that appear in the narrative thread through the songs. Although they will not find a story in the style "Lord of the rings", all the lyrics and the order of the songs, have behind a sequence designed and a sense that takes the listener through an interesting narrative journey.

​

 

Tell us the musical style that we will have with this new facet of Adrián Benegas! I think it will be Power / Heavy Metal? For the super voices that are with you!

Look Roberto, there's everything! Power metal, a bit of black metal, some heavy, among other elements, in short ... It is a very diverse album in terms of the musical of which I feel very satisfied. As I said, the songs and the story itself, required certain types of voices, from dark voices, passages and voices of opera with Zuberoa, for example, other heavier ones, so the general concept led to the need to use all the artistic potential that I have acquired during many years of musical "experiments" and thus the songs with a lot of musical diversity were born. I am sure that listeners will enjoy it very much!

What surprise do you have with the combination with Zuberoa Aznárez?

Zuberoa represents the angelic part of the album, so to speak. She has contributed with this album in a fantastic way as always and has done a great job with the voices, bringing artistic balance to the other voices, in some passages of the album.

Unlike your other band Tragul, which makes this new project different, besides the musical style?

​

Adrián

​

All! When they hear the first promotional cut they will realize that it is something totally different from Tragul, in my opinion, this album is the most ambitious and mature work that I have done until today. Adding that it is the first time I work with male vocalists, so this project parallel to Tragul, is something completely different. Nothing similar

​

How was the production of the album? Above all, working with Jacob Hansen and Maor Appelbaum!

Totally rewarding! Maor mastered a song (Servants of the Death) with Alberto Bravin (mix), it's great to have them in the project. And of Jacob as always, I only have admiration and respect for his work. Apart from being for me, the best mixing and mastering engineer is a great person, he always gave me a hand since we started working in Tragul, back in 2017. For me, a true honor to have made this artistic and friendship bond with Jacob Entering details of the album, I can say that it has made the songs have an atmosphere, that is, by listening to the songs you can not only notice a great quality in terms of sound, but Jacob has done, that by listening to them you immerse yourself in them completely. It is super magical!

I don’t know my friend Adrian, but I think the album will have us musical surprises, I mean that the songs will not be similar musically, so there will be some pieces heavier than others?

​

Just as you say, friend! "THE REVENANT" is much heavier and more diverse than all the previous works I've been doing. I should also point out that it is much more "symphonic" than the previous works, so to speak, there are much more keyboard arrangements and orchestrations. Many harmonic and rhythmic changes, so the drums play a very important role too, giving the songs that aggressive punch and much heavier than my previous works.

​

And finally, as a big fan of the pioneering Power Metal bands with keyboards, there are a few keyboard solos out there, haha.

Is there any video for this album was made?

So is! For now I can say that on September 27 the first musical cut of the album “SERVANTS OF THE DEATH” will be released with the incredible voices of the great Ralf Scheepers accompanied by a lyric video with some surprise. Tragul is still active in parallel. While we have taken a long and deserved rest after the rain of “singles” and videos that we have been releasing since 2017 uninterruptedly, we will return with many new songs. For now, I am focused on the launch of “THE REVENANT” as well as Zuberoa with Diabulus in Musica, but as soon as we have free time, we will start with new things in Tragul.

Will it be possible to have a tour with this album The Revenant?

That's the idea! It is my desire to do so, and I am already working on that. But first things first, the release of the album and then we'll see if there is an opportunity to take it live.

Adrian Benegas, compositor, teclista y empresario, nació el 1 de marzo de 1989 en Asunción, Paraguay. Principalmente conocido por ser el fundador del proyecto internacional de metal TRAGUL. Comenzó su carrera en la música cuando creó su primer proyecto de metal llamado Pergana en 2008, que lanzó dos EP. Un año después, Adrian fundó Tragul y entró en la escena profesional contratando algunos grandes artistas para colaborar con él, como Alex Holzwarth, Oliver Holzwarth (Blind Guardian), Steve Conley, Zuberoa Aznarez y Sander Zoer. Tragul es musicalmente una banda innovadora, que explora nuevos mundos no tradicionales cuando se trata de escuchar su música. Los lanzamientos de Tragul vienen en un formato único "canción por canción" e incluso con su breve camino musical, la banda es reconocida por su potencial. Desde junio de 2017, la banda ha lanzado 9 singles, ampliamente aclamados por la crítica.

En 2019 y paralelamente a Tragul, Adrian comenzó la producción de su proyecto más ambicioso: un álbum debut, escribiendo todas las letras, el concepto y toda la música por sí mismo.

Una característica muy importante del álbum debut paraguayo es que es conceptual y tiene un significado profundo, sobre la historia del viaje de un alma no redimida desde las profundidades de su propio infierno hasta el borde del paraíso interior, buscando la autorrealización. Se puede decir que este álbum da una idea del viaje humano en sí, los altibajos, y finalmente encuentra la luz al final del túnel.

¡Hola Roberto, gracias a vos por la entrevista! Es un placer responder a tus preguntas como siempre.

​

¿Cuéntame cómo surgió la idea de debutar en solitario con este nuevo álbum?

​

Adrián

​

Para serte sincero todo esto del álbum surgió de manera impensada hasta cierto punto, mi idea original era lanzar singles al igual que lo hacemos en Tragul, pero con vocalistas masculinos. Y así fue al comienzo, empecé a trabajar en una canción que se llama “Servants of the Death” con Ralf Scheepers en las voces y un line up de músicos paraguayos, Seba Ramírez en batería y Diego Bogarín (Tragul) en bajo y guitarra. Como te mencioné, mi idea era hacer de esto un proyecto paralelo a Tragul, pero con el mismo formato de manera independiente. ¡Todo estaba encaminado para el lanzamiento a comienzos de año, incluso, ya había fecha de lanzamiento, imagínate! Pero de pronto, recibí un par de emails que cambiaron todo… Unos sellos discográficos estaban atentos a este proyecto y propusieron la idea de hacer un álbum, y fue ahí cuando pensé “¿por qué no?”. A partir de ahí les propuse que me den un tiempo para producir el álbum y fue así como me encerré por 4 meses, durante las 24 horas del día a componer y tenerlo listo para este año. ¡Mirando atrás puedo decir que fue una locura! 4 meses para escribir el concepto, las letras, la música, los arreglos y grabar todo, desde las voces hasta la batería, algo por lo cual me siento bastante orgulloso y muy satisfecho con el resultado, ya lo escucharán.

​

¿Cuál es la temática y/o concepto para este álbum? ¿En qué te basaste para hacer las letras?

​

​

Bueno, este concepto si bien me senté a madurarlo durante unos meses y terminarlo como te mencioné anteriormente, ya lo tenía guardado en el subconsciente, era algo que siempre me sedujo. Hacer un álbum basándome o mejor dicho inspirándome en el relato épico de la DIVINA COMEDIA de DANTE ALIGHIERI. Sabes, este concepto de descender al infierno interior (así lo entiendo yo) y purificarse desde adentro buscando incansablemente por la liberación de la esencia enfrascada en nuestros miedos, egos, etc., es algo que lo tengo muy presente siempre… Y es así como decidí utilizar eso para poder contar algo interesante y convertirlo en música.

​

¿Tenemos un álbum interesante, con la combinación de varios músicos muy talentosos, como fue esta alianza y por qué?

​

​

Sencillo, necesitaba varias voces para poder representar los personajes que van apareciendo en el hilo narrativo a través de las canciones. Si bien no van a encontrar una historia al estilo “Lord of the rings”, todas las letras y el orden de las canciones, tienen detrás una secuencia pensada y un sentido que lleva al oyente a través de un viaje narrativo interesante.

​

¡Cuéntanos el estilo musical que tendremos con esta nueva faceta de Adrián Benegas! Me parece que será de Power/Heavy Metal? ¡Por las súper voces que están contigo!

​

Mira Roberto, ¡hay de todo! Power metal, un poco de black metal, algo de heavy, entre otros elementos más, en fin… Es un disco muy diverso en cuanto a lo musical de lo cual me siento muy satisfecho. Como te voy comentado, las canciones y la historia en sí, requerían cierto tipo de voces, desde voces oscuras, pasajes y voces de opera con Zuberoa, por ejemplo, otras más heavy, entonces, el concepto general llevó a que necesitase utilizar todo el potencial artístico que he adquirido durante muchos años de “experimentos” musicales y así nacieron las canciones con mucha diversidad musical. ¡Estoy seguro de que los oyentes van a disfrutarlo mucho!

¿Qué sorpresa nos tienes con la combinación con Zuberoa Aznárez?

​

​

Zuberoa representa la parte angelical del álbum, por decirlo de alguna manera. Ella ha contribuido con este álbum de manera fantástica como siempre y ha hecho un trabajo estupendo con las voces, aportando equilibrio artístico a las demás voces, en algunos pasajes del álbum.

​

A diferencia de tu otra banda Tragul, que hace diferente a este nuevo proyecto, ¿además del estilo musical?

​

Adrián

​

¡Todo! Cuando escuchen el primer corte promocional se darán cuenta que es algo totalmente distinto a Tragul, en mi opinión, este álbum es el trabajo más ambicioso y maduro que he hecho hasta hoy día. Sumándole que es la primera vez que trabajo con vocalistas masculinos, así que este proyecto paralelo a Tragul, es algo completamente diferente. Nada similar.

​

¿Como fue la producción del álbum? ¡Sobre todo, el trabajar con Jacob Hansen y Maor Appelbaum!

​

​

¡Totalmente gratificante! Maor masterizó una canción (Servants of the Death) junto a Alberto Bravin (mezcla), es genial tenerlos en el proyecto. Y de Jacob como siempre, solo tengo admiración y respeto por su trabajo. Aparte de ser para mí, el mejor ingeniero de mezcla y masterización es una gran persona, siempre me dio una mano desde que empezamos a trabajar en Tragul, allá por el 2017. Para mí, un verdadero honor haber hecho este lazo artístico y de amistad con Jacob. Entrando en detalles del álbum, puedo decir que ha hecho que las canciones tengan un ambiente, es decir, al escuchar las canciones no solo puedes notar una gran calidad en cuanto a sonido, sino que Jacob ha hecho, que al escucharlas te sumerjas en ellas completamente. ¡Es super mágico!

​

No se mi amigo Adrián, pero creo que el álbum nos tendrás sorpresas musicales, me refiero que las canciones no serán semejantes musicalmente, ¿así que habrá algunas piezas más pesadas que otras?

​

Adrián

​

¡Así mismo como dices, amigo! “THE REVENANT” es mucho más heavy y diverso de todos los trabajos anteriores que vengo haciendo. También debo destacar que es mucho más “sinfónico” que los trabajos anteriores por así decirlo, hay bastante más de arreglos de teclado y orquestaciones. Muchos cambios armónicos y rítmicos, por lo que la batería cumple un rol bastante importante también, dando a las canciones ese “punch” agresivo y mucho más pesado que mis trabajos anteriores.

​

Y, por último, como gran fan de las bandas pioneras de Power Metal con teclados, hay unos cuantos solos de teclado por ahí repartidos, jaja.

​

¿Se hizo algún vídeo para este álbum?

​

¡Así es! Por lo pronto puedo decir que el 27 de septiembre saldrá a la luz el primer corte musical del álbum “SERVANTS OF THE DEATH” con las voces increíbles del gran Ralf Scheepers acompañado de un lyric video con alguna sorpresa. Si bien nos hemos tomado un largo y merecido descanso después de la lluvia de “singles” y vídeos que venimos lanzando desde el 2017 ininterrumpidamente, volveremos con muchas canciones nuevas. Por lo pronto, estoy enfocado en el lanzamiento de “THE REVENANT” como también Zuberoa con Diabulus in Musica, pero en cuanto tengamos tiempo libre, empezaremos con cosas nuevas en Tragul.

¿Se podrá tener un Tour con este álbum de The Revenant?

¡Esa es la idea! Es mi deseo hacerlo, y ya me encuentro trabajando en eso. Pero primero lo primero, el lanzamiento del álbum y luego veremos si se da la oportunidad de llevarlo en vivo.
