Toronto's Protokult have been defining folk/pagan metal since 2009 when they released their debut album “Ancestral Anthems”, since then they have created three additional uncompromising and relentless albums with their fifth “Transcending The Ruins” coming out on October 1, 2020.

Over two years in the making, “Transcending The Ruins” is a rush, meant to be enjoyed either as a whole journey or at any entry point, the band ensures. Approaching this record with a bit more maturity and consistency, the result is heavier, faster, darker.

Inspired and fascinated by various metal genres alongside folk-culture, after a few years of experimenting, Protokult was meant to fuse the two together while paying homage to the past, Bacchanalian festivities and honouring the underground.

For fans of Arkona, Korpiklaani, and Nightwish, the record pulsates from start to finish yet incorporates the massive dynamics, ambience and dashes of folk-melodies that the band has become known for.

An excellent rhythm from the beginning of the song atmospheric, thick, fast, strong chords, acoustic and drums with hard step, the voice screaming in the background and later slow and clean gives it a melodeath contrast of pagan themes, plus those hard and short riffs!

Feed Your Demons

An overwhelming start full of thick and heavy chords and drums! Melodic, and later slow the scale and long tempos, contrast of pagan styles and full of folk! Great background vocal combo.

Keeper of the Hops

A musical beginning full of chords and much more melodic rhythms, the guitars in their full splendor and strength with the forcefulness that they are leaving us on each track! Greater speed and rhythm combining that Folk - Pagan metal excellently!

Oy Kanada!

Totally explosive start! Such powerful chords and excellent galloping speed! Ekaterina's beautiful voice is present! Robust chords, short and fast tempos.

Troubled Lad (Sláinte Mhaith)

We begin with a narration with a folk song, full of energy and speed, here the voice makes more presence, along with guitars full of force.

Na Gryanoi Nedele

Beautiful very stimulating background choirs, ambient sounds combined with ancestral sounds full of harmony, a totally atmospheric song.

Rusalka

What a beautiful song with a more oriental style, the song that presents us with Ekaterina's vocal ability, clean and clear voice, contrasting with guttural and clean male voices, she with high and low scales, long and heavy chords.

Valley of Thorns

A song with a classical theme with great force from the beginning, deep chords, very melodic, fast and hard, Ekaterina's voices and background in chorus give it a soft and instrumental feeling.

Wenches*

What a difference from the beginning of this song! A musical atmosphere of the 15th century European which then assails us with explosive and powerful chords! With a galloping and forceful battery! Contrasting and super explosive!

Greet the Dawn

We return with a soft and acoustic song in the beautiful voice of Ekaterina, which later increases the chords and drums with greater force, a ballad with pagan folk style.

Dead New World

And to close this album full of energy and strength, with beautiful atmospheres and in the voice of Ekaterina, we are pleased with this other beautiful acoustic and instrumental melody, but then strong and long chords assail us, with background chorus voices and clean male voice in combination of her beautiful voice.

My Recomendation

An album full of musical faces, each song is different in style and rhythm, it is not repetitive, with slow or explosive changes! High or low scales, heavy riffs, deep and slow rhythm, and some fast, also rough and other sharp ones, use of sung and rough voices, folk instrumentation, it is an album with a lot of potential and with several musical styles in the background as I said before It has certain progressive ensembles, a bit like pirate metal with certain musical scales of Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Ballads of course! You can't really pin down this album as a single musical style, just Folk - Pagan with a lot of bang and Force! There is appeal to this album and it is its musical versatility and strength.

The Voice

Ekaterina's beautiful voice is what delights in this album, the softness, timbre and vibrato that she presents to us, with high musical scales, her voice sharpens perfectly and in the parts of the soft and clean ballads that always make a super contrast with the choirs and guttural voices and with a melodic Death Metal style, her beautiful operatic voice enhances the soft melodies and softens the heavier melodies!

Protokult de Toronto ha estado definiendo el folk / pagan metal desde 2009 cuando lanzaron su álbum debut "Ancestral Anthems", desde entonces han creado tres álbumes adicionales intransigentes e implacables con su quinto "Transcending The Ruins" que saldrá el 1 de octubre de 2020.

Con más de dos años de preparación, “Transcending The Ruins” es una carrera, pensada para disfrutarla como un viaje completo o en cualquier punto de entrada, asegura la banda. Acercándonos a este récord con un poco más de madurez y consistencia, el resultado es más pesado, más rápido, más oscuro.

Inspirado y fascinado por varios géneros de metal junto con la cultura popular, después de unos años de experimentación, Protokult estaba destinado a fusionar los dos mientras rendía homenaje al pasado, las festividades bacanales y honra al underground.

Un excelente ritmo desde el inicio de la canción atmosférico, acordes gruesos, rápidos, fuertes, acústica y batería con paso duro, la voz screaming de fondo y posteriormente lenta y limpia le da un contraste melodeath de temática pagana, más esos riffs duros y breves!

Feed Your Demons

Un inicio apabullante lleno de acordes y batería gruesos y pesados! Melódica, y posteriormente lenta la escala y tempos largos, contraste de estilos paganos y llenos de folk! Combinado de voces geniales de fondo.

Keeper of the Hops

Un inicio musical lleno de acordes y ritmos mucho más melódicos, las guitarras en su pleno esplendor y fuerza con la contundencia que nos están dejando en cada pista! Mayor velocidad y ritmo combinando ese Folk – Pagan metal excelentemente!

Oy Kanada!

Inicio totalmente explosivo! Que acordes tan potentes y galopeo speed excelente! La bella voz de Ekaterina se hace presente! Acordes robustos, tempos cortos y veloces.

Troubled Lad (Sláinte Mhaith)

Comenzamos con una narración con un canto folclórico, lleno de energía y velocidad, aquí la voz hace más presencia, junto a guitarras llenas de fuerza y contundencia.

Na Gryanoi Nedele

Bellos coros de fondo muy estimulantes, sonidos ambientales combinados con sonidos ancestrales llenos de armonía, una canción atmosférica totalmente.

Rusalka

Que bella canción con un estilo más oriental, la canción que nos presenta la habilidad vocal de Ekaterina, voz limpia y clara, contrastando con voces guturales y limpias masculinas, ella con escalas altas y bajas, acordes largos y pesados.

Valley of Thorns

Una canción con temática clásica con mucha fuerza desde el inicio, acordes profundos, muy melódicos, veloces y duros, las voces de Ekaterina y de fondo en coro le dan una sensación suave e instrumental.

Wenches*

Que diferencia de inicio de esta canción! Una atmosfera musical del siglo 15 Europeo que después nos asaltan acordes explosivos y potentes! Con una batería a galope y contundente! Contrastante y súper explosiva!

Greet the Dawn

Volvemos con una canción suave y acústica en la bella voz de Ekaterina, que posteriormente aumentan los acordes y batería con mayor fuerza, una balada con estilo folk pagano.

Dead New World

Y para cerrar este albúm lleno de energía y fuerza, con bellas atmosferas y en voz de Ekaterina nos complace con esta otra bella melodía acústica e instrumental, pero después nos asaltan acordes fuertes y largos, con voces de coro de fondo y voz masculina limpia en combinación de la bella voz de ella.

Mi Recomendación

Un albúm lleno de faces musicales, cada canción es diferente en estilo y ritmo, no es repetitivo, con cambios lentos o explosivos! Escalas altas o bajas, riffs pesados, profundos y de ritmo lento, y unas veloces, también ásperos y otros afilados, uso de voces cantadas y ásperas, instrumentación folk, es un álbum con mucho potencial y con varios estilos musicales de fondo como dije anteriormente, tiene ciertos ensambles progresivos, un poco como pirate metal con ciertas escalas musicales de Thrash Metal, Death Metal y las Baladas por supuesto! Realmente no se puede precisar este álbum como un estilo musical único, simplemente Folk – Pagano con mucha explosión y Fuerza! Hay atractivo en este álbum y es su versatilidad musical y fuerza.

La Voz

La bella voz de Ekaterina, es lo que deleita en este albúm, la suavidad, timbre y vibrato que nos presenta ella, con escalas musicales altas su voz de ella se agudiza perfectamente y en las partes de las baladas suaves y limpias que siempre hacen un súper contraste con los coros y las voces guturales y con un estilo Death Metal Melódico, su bella voz operística enaltece las melodías suaves y suaviza las melodías más pesadas!
