Velvet Ocean is an alternative melodic metal band from Oulu, Northern Finland.

The story of the band began a couple of years ago as a co-writing project of the

main singer Riitu and guitarist Jake. As songs kept popping up the project soon

evolved into a studio project with both session musicians and later band members

joining in. Early in the pre-production stage Oulu symphonic orchestra cello players

Arto Alikoski and Harri Österman joined as well as the established Finnish keyboard

player Marco Sneck.

 

The recorded album, later given the name “Purposes and Promises” was passed

to Fascination Street Studios Johan Örnborg and Jens Bogren for mixing and mastering,

respectively. The name of the album describes the motivation behind the album project.

It has been the sole purpose of our lives for the recent years and the promise that

was made to complete it has kept the project together throughout the hard working period.

 

Our music is about honesty and dealing with certain emotions that some difficulties

or challenges in life have evoked. It’s about expressing yourself and dealing with

negative feelings in a way that other people might also be able to relate to. Riitu,

the singer and main songwriter of Velvet Ocean describes her attitude towards

music like this: "Music is very important to me. It’s almost as important as the air

that I breathe. Music gives a meaning to my life. It’s also a sort of therapy to me.

With music I can express the thoughts and emotions that I go through. I’m the kind

of person that I have a very vivid imagination and I feel that this is a quality that is

very useful in making music. Music connects me very strongly to my emotions in a

way that sometimes feels even a little bit excessive. It is very important to me to

communicate with the people listening to our music. I mean an emotional level

connection that would make the people try to understand the feelings we have put

into the blend that has eventually made the music exist. I am also very visual in my

composing. I would like the mere music and the sound to fill the whole inner space

of the person listening with images and landscapes. Today the world is packed

with visual information and leaves less to the imagination which is kind of a

negative thing sometimes. In the end, I believe our music will prevail after

everything we’ve gone through.”

 

Velvet Ocean’s debut album “Purposes and Promises” was released on 7 Feb

2020 through Helsinki Records and is distributed by Warner Music Finland.

It’s So Hard

 

The opening of the album is beautifully melodic! Rhythmic and harmonious! Smooth and with an extremely modern chord, Riitu's beautiful voice opens the beautiful melody that accompanies the other instruments, especially almost in unison with those guitar chords.

 

Tonight

 

Excellent acoustic input with the beautiful voice of Riitu, a very soft melody that gradually becomes a little stronger, I think we have a ballad with a perfect combination of a soft and forceful chord as in the final part with a bit of Riffs something brief in the company of her beautiful voice.

 

Requiem

 

We have another acoustic entrance and in the company of a few gentle chord beats, Riitu's beautiful voice enhances those contrasts and musical parts, riffs and forceful drum combinations without exceeding strength or tone, Riitu's voice does wonders!

 

Butterfly

 

What a sublime entry with soft and melancholic instruments! That Cello and piano decorate Riitu's epiphany-filled voice, later accompanying a drums at a slow tempo, with long chords to accompany the beautiful harmony of Rittu's voice.

 

Truth or Illusion*

 

Super excellent entry! More energetic and faster! I think that was already missing the album! We listen to Riitu more melodic and rhythmic! A catchier song with a slight pop cut, those more natural and stronger chords!

 

Elysian Fields

 

We return with sublime and light musical inputs, soft and slow notes, Riitu's voice is the strongest and most emotional part on each track! After a burst of musical energy for brief moments, that falsetto gives it a lot of harmony and that combination together with the electronic parts and those Riffs that come out for brief moments.

 

Broken

 

Another beautiful atmospheric entry of Cello notes and constant piano, pave the way for Riitu's voice that leads the musical guide as well as the rhythm and speed with each note that imprints on our ears with this beautiful musical seal.

 

Innocent Eyes

 

A very different musical input, something strong and fast, melodic like a song before this one, a smooth song with a modern and very light style, the Riffs enter the scene giving a little emphasis on those high notes that give a good entrance to Riitu's voice.

 

Lullaby

 

A very stylized acoustic input and beautifully accompanied by Riitu's voice expansion cleaner and clearer, this song we can hear more clearly her beautiful voice and for a few moments the accompanying male voice.

 

Salvation

 

Beautiful musical ending with this last song in a stamp full of light, soft and harmonic notes, with a hypnotizing sound in the guide of Riitu's soft voice! Although in the final part they jump with more energy that fades along with the voice at the end of the song.

 

My Recomendation

 

It is a totally emotional and conceptual album! With a strong influence on Symphonic / Gothic Metal in its most Symphonic part, and in combination with Alternative Metal, due to the use of more catchy and very melodic notes, in addition to the instrumental part, the amount of emotion expressed in the voice of she is very remarkable it gives more depth to the melodies and each musical part, the songs are easy to listen to and flow quite harmoniously, it is a continuous album in the musical style, except in the song of Truth or Illusion, it was totally heard different more energetic and faster the song, it has a beautiful musical and ambient atmosphere, there are some ballads for lovers of a melancholic and passionate style this album will be a musical jewel and for the vocal contribution of Riitu! The album is a good job for those winter days and rainy days, breaking into melancholy in each of the listeners.

 

All instruments go in a musical range, so to speak, from the sensitive to the forceful and somewhat explosive, without exceeding the presence in the vocal harmony of Rutt, especially the Cello that gives a contrast in all the musical tracks that appear.

 

The Voice

 

The voice is great! Pleasant, sensitive, emotional, from melancholic to very passionate! A light range, with a soft timbre and towards highs with a lot of power, in all the album over it, the voice comes out quite a lot, since there is a lot of weight in Riitu's voice and this makes her voice and the music decorate that part enhancing her voice, I think we could say that her voice range is in the stature of great singers like Sharon den Adel, a little to that of Amy Lee (Amy Lee's voice is a bit more gravelly), Liv Kristine or Carly Smithson in high notes.

Velvet Ocean es una banda alternativa de metal melódico de Oulu, en el norte de Finlandia.

La historia de la banda comenzó hace un par de años como un proyecto de co-escritura de la cantante principal Riitu y guitarrista Jake. Como las canciones seguían apareciendo el proyecto pronto evolucionó a un proyecto de estudio con músicos de sesión y miembros posteriores de la banda a unirse. Al principio de la etapa de preproducción de los músicos de violonchelo de la orquesta sinfónica de Oulu Arto Alikoski y Harri Österman se unieron, así como el tecladista finlandés Marco Sneck. El álbum grabado, más tarde con el nombre de "Propósitos y promesas", pasó a los estudios Fascination Street Johan Örnborg y Jens Bogren para mezclar y masterizar, respectivamente. El nombre del álbum describe la motivación detrás del proyecto del álbum. Ha sido el único propósito de nuestras vidas durante los últimos años y la promesa que se hizo para completarlo mantuvo el proyecto unido durante todo el duro período de trabajo.

 

Nuestra música trata sobre la honestidad y el manejo de ciertas emociones que algunas dificultades o desafíos en la vida han evocado. Se trata de expresarse y tratar con sentimientos negativos de una manera con la que otras personas también podrían relacionarse. Riitu la cantante y compositora principal de Velvet Ocean describe su actitud hacia música como esta: "La música es muy importante para mí. Es casi tan importante como el aire que respiro La música le da un sentido a mi vida. También es una especie de terapia para mí. Con la música puedo expresar los pensamientos y las emociones por las que paso. Soy del tipo de persona que tengo una imaginación muy vívida y siento que esta es una cualidad que es Muy útil para hacer música. La música me conecta muy fuertemente con mis emociones en una manera que a veces se siente incluso un poco excesiva. Para mí es muy importante comunicarnos con las personas que escuchan nuestra música. Me refiero a un nivel emocional conexión que haría que la gente tratara de entender los sentimientos que hemos puesto en la mezcla que finalmente hizo que la música existiera. También soy muy visual en mi composición. Me gustaría que la mera música y el sonido llenen todo el espacio interior. de la persona escuchando con imágenes y paisajes. Hoy el mundo está lleno con información visual y deja menos a la imaginación que es una especie de lo negativo a veces. Al final, creo que nuestra música prevalecerá después todo por lo que hemos pasado".

La apertura del albúm es bellamente melódica! Rítmica y armoniosa! Suave y con un acorde sumamente moderno, la bella voz de Riitu da la apertura de la bella melodía que acompaña a los demás instrumentos sobre todo casi al unísono con esos acordes de guitarras.  

 

Tonight

 

Excelente entrada acústica con la bella vos de Riitu, una melodía muy suave que poco a poco se vuelve un poco más fuerte, creo que tenemos una balada con una perfecta combinación entre un acorde suave y contundente como en la parte final con un poco de Riffs algo breve en compañía de la bella voz de ella.

 

Requiem

 

Tenemos otra entrada acústica y en compañía de unas pulsaciones de acordes suaves, la bella voz de Riitu enaltece esos contrastes y partes musicales, Riffs y combinaciones de batería contundentes sin exceder fuerza o tono, la voz de Riitu hace maravillas!

 

Butterfly

 

Vaya entrada tan sublime con instrumentos suaves y melancólicos! Ese Cello y piano decoran la voz llena de epifanía de Riitu, posteriormente acompaña una batería en un tempo lento, con acordes largos para acompañar la bella armonía de la voz de Riitu.

 

Truth or Illusion*

 

Súper excelente entrada! Mas enérgica y veloz! Creo eso ya le estaba faltando al albúm! Escuchamos a Riitu mas melódica y rítmica! Una canción más pegadiza y con un ligero corte pop, esos acordes más naturales y fuertes!

 

Elysian Fields

 

Volvemos con entradas musicales sublimes y ligeras, notas suaves y lentas, la voz de Riitu es la parte más fuerte y emocional en cada pista! Después un estallido de energía musical por breves momentos, ese falsete le da mucha armonía y esa combinación junto a las partes electrónicas y esos Riffs que sobre salen por breves momentos.

 

Broken

 

Otra entrada atmosférica bella de notas de Cello y piano constante, nos abren camino a la voz de Riitu que lleva la guía musical así como el ritmo y velocidad con cada nota que nos imprime en nuestros oídos con este bello sello musical.

 

Innocent Eyes

 

Una entrada musical muy diferente, algo fuerte y veloz, melódica como una canción anterior a esta, una canción suave y con un estilo moderno y muy ligero, los Riffs entran en escena dando un poco de énfasis en esas notas altas que dan una buena entrada a la voz de Riitu.

 

Lullaby

 

Una entrada acústica muy estilizada y bellamente acompañada de la expansión de voz de Riitu más limpia y clara, esta canción podemos escuchar más claramente la hermosa voz de ella y por breves instantes la voz masculina que la acompaña.

 

Salvation

 

Bello final musical con esta última canción de una estampa llena de notas ligeras, suaves y armónicas, con un sonido hipnotizante en la guía de la suave voz de Riitu! Aunque en la parte final saltan con más energía que se desvanece junto a la voz al final de la canción.

 

Mi Recomendación

 

Es un albúm totalmente emocional y conceptual! Con una fuerte influencia al Metal Sinfónico/Gótico en su parte más mas Sinfónica, y en combinación de Metal Alternativo, por el uso de notas más pegadizas y muy melódicas, además de la parte instrumental, la cantidad de emoción que expresa en la voz  de ella es muy destacable le da más profundidad a las melodías y a cada parte musical, las canciones son fáciles de escuchar y fluyen bastante con mucha armonía, es un albúm continuo en el estilo musical, salvo en la canción de Truth or Illusion ahí se escuchó totalmente diferente más enérgica y más veloz la canción, tiene una bella atmósfera musical y ambiental, hay unas quizás baladas para los amantes de un estilo melancólico y apasionado este albúm será una joya musical y por el aporte vocal de Riitu!  El albúm es un buen trabajo para esos días de invierno y días lluviosos, rompiendo en la melancolía en cada uno de los oyentes.

 

Todos los instrumentos van en un rango por decirlo así musical de lo sensible a lo contundente y algo explosivo, sin rebasar la presencia en la armonía vocal de Riitu, sobre todo el Cello que da un contraste en todas las pistas musicales que aparece.

 

La Voz

 

La voz es genial! Agradable, sensible, emocional, de melancólica a muy apasionada! Un rango ligero, con un timbre suave y hacia unos agudos con mucha potencia, en todo el albúm sobre sale bastante su voz de ella, hay mucho peso en la voz de Riitu sinceramente y esto hace que tenga mucha presencia su voz y la música decora esa parte enalteciendo su voz, creo que podríamos decir que su rango de voz está en la talla de grandes cantantes como Sharon den Adel, un poco a la de Amy Lee (es un poco más grave la de Amy), Liv Kristine o Carly Smithson en notas altas y agudas.
