Hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland, Husband-and-wife two piece Hand of Kalliach arose in December with the launch of their debut EP, Shade Beyond, available to purchase on Bandcamp and on all major streaming services. Picked up very quickly by stations and playlists, Hand of Kalliach were January's Band of the Month on the Midnight Hour on Metal Meyhem Radio. Their sound is defined by distilled Scottish, Gaelic and Celtic overtones blended with a melodeath metal foundation. Whilst influenced by folk music, they make minimal use of traditional instruments, instead lifting rhythms, time signatures and patterns from folk music and adapt them for distorted guitars. The tracks range in atmosphere from the charged energy of "In Tempest Wrought" and "White Horizon'', to the raw aggression of "Fathoms" and the darker intonations of "Fàilte", and to the more classic metal punch of "Overwhelm".

Hello! Friends! Thank you very much for the interview! How are you? Welcome!

Sophie:

Hi Darkzen, we’re great, thanks for having us!

John:

Absolutely, great to be here!

Tell us a little about everything! How and why did you decide to form this super duet?

John:

Well thanks for calling it a super duet! Sure, we started writing in summer 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown in the UK, the project had been something we had wanted to do for some time and the restrictions at the time served as a good prompt to do so.

Sophie:

John has previously played a fair amount in metal bands in the UK, but this was the first one I’ve been involved in. It was a really enjoyable (and quite cathartic) experience, and something that helped us stay productive throughout our time isolating at home.

What are your musical influences? In his EP I detect different musical styles.

Sophie:

Whilst we are both very much into our metal, we are also fans of traditional folk music, which is still quite prominently played across venues in Scotland. With Hand Of Kalliach we wanted to combine the two and blend the passion and energy that you find in both genres. We’re not the first Scottish folk metal band of course, but we do think we’re doing something a bit different in how we go about it.

John:

I think we have pretty broad tastes between us, covering a lot of metal and rock subgenres but also traditional folk. On the metal side, I’m a big fan of technical/melodic death metal with an atmospheric slant. Outside of metal, I listen to a really weird range of Scottish folk, downtempo, shoegaze... my Spotify recommended playlists are sometimes a bit bizarre!

Sophie:

Yeah, I lean more towards a mix of speed and folk metal tastes, though out with metal some of my favourite bands are more in the folk/indie space. I think the breadth of styles in our music is probably reflective of these fairly diverse influences.

Your EP is great! It has a lot of strength and aggressiveness! Both musical and vocal, Whose idea was your EP production?

Sophie:

Thanks so much! We started off with just one track, which was an early version of what is now ‘Fathoms’ on the EP. John tends to write the melodies, I will add some vocals and a bassline and then we build the songs out from there. We just kept building up the tracks in this way over 2020 until we had five distinct, diverse songs that we felt were still strongly tied together with our sound.

John:

It was great to be able to write from a blank canvas with more of a conceptual sound - I actually started off as a metal drummer, and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my time doing so I never quite got to play the music that I really wanted to play. Being able to work with Sophie as just the two of us over lockdown was extremely enjoyable, as we got to be a lot more experimental with the sound than perhaps would have been achievable in a full band environment.

The band name, who of you two wrote it and under what concept?

Sophie:

“Kalliach” is a play on “Cailleach”, which is the name of an ancient Scottish god of winter. In Scottish mythology the legend goes that she lives at the bottom of an enormous whirlpool off the coast of Islay, where some of John’s family are from.

John:

The story goes she emerges from the whirlpool to usher in winter, and has a lot of malign connotations in folklore; but that said, she is also a creator deity, so the music we make is centred around these dual concepts of benevolence and malevolence, and the history, mythology and land/seascapes of the Scottish islands. But the “ancient god of winter living underneath the huge whirlpool” always sounded pretty metal to me growing up, anyway!

The Voice of Sophie and that of you John are mixed and heard quite powerful, your musical style demands that the voice or is something the taste of the two of you?

John:

I would definitely say we do it to taste rather than trying to fit a genre - we are constantly experimenting when we’re writing, and I think it’s fair to say with the amount of different subgenres we’ve been tagged as we’re incorporating quite a lot of different styles and influences into our music - and as a result, adapt our vocals accordingly, rather than go in with a preconceived idea of what subgenre we’re aiming for. We’re definitely not the first metal band doing dual vocals of course, but hopefully we’re doing it a little differently at least.

There are some tracks where Sophie is only playing bass and not singing, namely Fathoms and Overwhelm on the EP.

Sophie:

Yes, and that was a conscious decision - when we’re writing, if a song works with my vocals we will use them, but in other cases we might stick with only John’s instead. Some tracks like ‘Fathoms’ as you say ended up being very blunt, aggressive songs, so much so that we didn’t feel that my softer vocals would fit there. But straight after writing that we did ‘White Horizon’, which has a lot of my vocals contrasting John’s much harsher ones, and the combination of the two has turned out to be particularly well received.

John:

Looking back on the EP it’s actually the darker, more gritty tracks that have really worked well with Sophie’s vocals, and that’s certainly a direction we’re keen to keep writing in. ‘White Horizon’ is a big favourite with a lot of listeners and I think we knew that would be more popular, but my favourite is probably ‘In Tempest Wrought’ - and when we overlaid Sophie’s vocals after the breakdown mid-way through the whole song just came together extremely well with her vocals offsetting the harshness of mine.

Folk, Celtic or Black Metal is what we can hear on your EP?

Sophie:

Are we allowed to say all…? Because it’s definitely a mix of them all!

John:

Yeah, we were really exploring what we could do with Celtic sounds within the really rich sonic environment that encompasses metal today. A lot of the higher melodies in the EP are based on the scales and rhythms that you would normally find in Scottish folk music, but rather than play them on fiddles/accordions/flutes we’ve adapted them for distorted guitars instead. The idea being you end up with the same melodic energy and pace from the traditional music, melded with the raw power and expression you get from a death metal base.

Sophie:

Applying various elements of metal subgenres really let us create a bit more of a expansive sound across the EP. Some of the darker black metal influences in the likes of ‘White Horizon’ really let us draw a much sharper contrast between our two vocal types, and really reflect that benign/malign duality of the Cailleach in Scottish mythology.

Are you working on a full album?

John:

We most certainly are! To be totally honest, when we were writing the EP it was a bit of an “out-there” passion project that we were not expecting would have any form of success, and on that basis I would probably have categorised it as a project to begin with. However we’ve been blown away by how much it is resonating with some of our listeners.

Sophie:

Being picked up by radio stations wanting to play us even before we’d started emailing tracks out was massively encouraging, and very humbling. When we got the ‘Band of the Month’ slot on Metal Meyhem Radio’s ‘The Midnight Hour’ in January we were speechless. We’ve been so motivated by the reception that as John says, we are actively writing again with a view to release a full-length in 2021.

Have you released a Music Video or will the video be seen later?

Sophie:

Unfortunately not yet - as we’re in and out of lockdown still in the UK due to COVID-19 we haven’t had the chance to produce a video, however it is on the hit list for this year!

What more work do you have in mind later for this 2021?

John:

As part of the full-length, we’ll be dropping a few singles from it as we go through the year, and maybe even a video as Sophie says. So you can watch our social media feeds on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and follow us on Spotify for our new releases.

Sophie:

Plus once venues reopen we'll definitely be looking to play some live shows and see where we go from there, we really value the live show atmosphere and it’s something we badly missed during the 2020 COVID restrictions!

So that you contact them more! Any network where you two do some live stream?

John:

One of the challenges of it just being the two of us from a writing and recording perspective means it’s been very tricky to work out how we could do some live streams, as we’d have to use pre-recorded drums and some rhythm guitars! But we are looking at the practicalities of it to see if it’s something that would turn out the way we would want it to… Possibly even doing an acoustic folk version of some of the tracks, so watch this space!
