Velvet Ocean is an alternative melodic metal band from Oulu, Northern Finland. The story of the band began a couple of years ago as a co-writing project of the main singer Riitu and guitarist Jake. As songs kept popping up the project son evolved into a studio project with both session musicians and later band members joining in. Early in the pre-production stage Oulu symphonic orchestra cello players Arto Alikoski and Harri Österman joined as well as the established Finnish keyboard player Marco Sneck. The recorded album, later given the name “Purposes and Promises” was passed to Fascination Street Studios Johan Örnborg and Jens Bogren for mixing and mastering, respectively. The name of the album describes the motivation behind the album project. It has been the sole purpose of our lives for the recent years and the promise that was made to complete it has kept the project together throughout the hard working period.
Our music is about honesty and dealing with certain emotions that some difficulties or challenges in life have evoked. It’s about expressing yourself and dealing with negative feelings in a way that other people might also be able to relate to. Riitu, the singer and main songwriter of Velvet Ocean describes her attitude towards music like this: "Music is very important to me. It’s almost as important as the air that I breathe. Music gives a meaning to my life. It’s also a sort of therapy to me. With music I can express the thoughts and emotions that I go through. I’m the kind of person that I have a very vivid imagination and I feel that this is a quality that is very useful in making music. Music connects me very strongly to my emotions in a way that sometimes feels even a little bit excessive. It is very important to me to communicate with the people listening to our music. I mean an emotional level connection that would make the people try to understand the feelings we have put into the blend that has eventually made the music exist. I am also very visual in my composing. I would like the mere music and the sound to fill the whole inner space of the person listening with images and landscapes. Today the world is packed with visual information and leaves less to the imagination which is kind of a negative thing sometimes. In the end, I believe our music will prevail after everything we’ve gone through.”

Hi! Thank you very much for the opportunity! I’ve been fine and we have all stayed healthy fortunately. I hope everything is good there as well! In Finland we have gone through the worst and things appear a bit better right now. We hope it will stay that way.
Tell us a little about Riitu as a songwriter, as a singer! You are very passionate when singing!
Riitu
Thank you! It’s great that you can hear the passion in our music! I have sung in every possible occasion from an early age and I have always loved music. It feels like music has been a very strong part of my life and has helped me to move forward even in difficult situations. I don’t know what I would do without music and singing. As a singer I think I’m pretty versatile. It might even be that I haven’t yet been able to show quite everything that I can do with my voice. The emotional side is of course for me the most important thing and I want my interpretation to reflect the story that I want to tell. I always try to think how I could better express the message or atmosphere of the song. Although I do have sensitivity in my singing, if required I can also have the necessary “edge” to deliver even the fast rock-style songs with my own style. I think I have certain originality in my voice as well as style and I always try to stick to that special thing. I wrote a few pop songs when I was younger, but somehow they just got forgotten. So I only became a songwriter later when I realised I am able to make songs and took a lot of interest in it. Making songs has played a really important role in my life for the last couple of years and we actually have a lot of extra material ready even beyond the album material.
What singers inside Metal do you have of musical influence? And outside of the Metal style, any particular singers or musical genre?

The first metal band I listened to was Metallica. I really liked James Hetfield’s original and recognizable singing style and of course Metallica’s great songs as well. I also listened to Stratovarius and liked Timo Kotipelto's interpretation of their songs. Later, I became interested in Within Temptation and Sharon den Adel’s beautiful voice, as well as Evanescence and Amy Lee’s strong and emotional interpretation. I have also listened to Amorphis with Tomi Joutsen who has a truely pleasant tone of voice as well as more fiery harsh vocal sections. Outside of metal music, my favorite singers are: Freddie Mercury, Christina Aguilera, Matthew Bellamy, Laura Voutilainen and Anna Eriksson among others.
You have a very soft and beautiful voice! Clean and clear! When I listen to your album you take us to another level. Do you have any vocal training?
Riitu
Thank you very much for your courtesy. Before making the album, I took a few singing lessons and practiced singing with Jake’s help and online material. After recording sessions I have taken singing lessons from two different teachers, because I wanted to develop myself as a singer even further. It has been really beneficial because our songs are technically very challenging for the singer. Especially for live performances, the singing lessons have been really useful.
Going back to your musical passion, I think I see the same reflection in you when singing with passion like Amy Lee, am I correct? When you say: Music is very important to me. It is almost as important as the air I breathe music gives my life meaning, This is a very deep thought! And I really noticed it, in the entire album of "Purposes and Promises" There was no song that did not feel something, how do you prepare to start writing a song?
Riitu
Yes, I am very passionate and emotional about singing. Some have said that I sometimes sound like Amy Lee and it doesn’t bother me because she’s absolutely great. But even so I think I have a completely own style to sing and interpret songs, because it's me and my voice. We have invested in making our songs look just like us and did not want to restrict ourselves in any way when composing them. I’m not really preparing to write a song in any particular way but the songs will only come if they are to come. Often, different moods affect how songs are created. Sometimes it can take a long time for almost nothing to come to my mind and then suddenly a lot of new melodies and lyrics come out. They can sometimes also wake me up in the middle of the night, when I can’t sleep and instead start humming a song and record it in the phone.
All the singers have a style and a way of expressing that feeling with the song and the music, but I think very few manage to transmit that feeling to the fans, Riitu you manage to transmit that feeling when singing! Why Alternative Metal and not Gothic Symphonic Metal?
Riitu
Thank you! I am very happy if I have managed to achieve what was my intention as a singer. To be honest, I'm not sure what genre our music ultimately even belongs to, and we don't think it's even that important anyway. Perhaps as a whole it is closest to alternative metal, but if you listen to the songs separately, you can clearly hear symphonic, gothic and pop influences, as well as a little grunge and progressive metal. From our songs you can hear the varied musical taste of both me and Jake (the guitarist and other composer). We really didn’t want to limit our music to any genre but we did what we thought sounded good and we both thought would fit the songs. This worked out well for us because one person can never be right in all things. It is good to listen to the opinions of others as well.
Darkzen:
Woow I thought I was hearing wrong! But you have given me the reason and in many of the songs of the album if I manage to listen to those musical mixes and choose to put the unique style.
I think our emotions are the motor that moves us and music and I sing a way to express them, your album "Purposes and Promises", how sensitive would you put it?
Riitu
I definitely agree. I think the motivation behind any art has to be the need to express yourself and your emotions and I don’t think the album would have come out the way it did without certain personal experiences. In addition to that there is of course imagination blended in but I still feel the album is very personal and sort of sensitive.
Going back to your super album "Purposes and Promises" will there be new recordings for other video clips?
Riitu
Yes, we are making a music video for the song Broken as well as another lyric video and possibly other music videos as well. We are also starting to record a new single next month. Helsinki Records' Maki Kolehmainen is going to produce our new song and we are totally looking forward working with him!
Right now I know that you can't have any tour or presentation, have you thought about making a Live Stream? Some social network for all of us to be attentive.

We did a live stream in May when we were participating the German DarkStream Festival. It was a really great thing for us. One song also features a live video on YouTube, so it’s worth a peek. There are no more stream gigs planned at the moment, but you never know what will happen. However, there are plans to start selling real gigs soon, as restrictions have begun to be lifted in Finland. We would like to be back on stage as soon as possible, but we still want to make sure that it is safe for everyone first.

Velvet Ocean es una banda de metal melódico alternativo de Oulu, en el norte de Finlandia. La historia de la banda comenzó hace un par de años como un proyecto de co-escritura del cantante principal Riitu y el guitarrista Jake. Con la música puedo expresar los pensamientos y las emociones por las que paso. Soy el tipo de persona que tengo una imaginación muy vívida y siento que esta es una cualidad que es muy útil para hacer música. La música conecta muy fuertemente a mis emociones de una manera que a veces se siente incluso un poco excesiva. Es muy importante para mí comunicarme con las personas que escuchan nuestra música. Me refiero a una conexión a nivel emocional que haría que la gente tratara de comprender los sentimientos. Que hemos puesto en la mezcla que finalmente ha hecho que la música exista. También soy muy visual en mí composición.
Me gustaría que la mera música y el sonido llenaran todo el espacio interior de la persona que escucha con imágenes y paisajes. ¡Hola! ¡Muchas gracias por la oportunidad! He estado bien y afortunadamente todos nos hemos mantenido saludables. ¡Espero que todo esté bien allí también! En Finlandia hemos pasado por lo peor y las cosas parecen un poco mejor ahora mismo. Esperamos que siga siendo así.

¡Gracias! ¡Es genial que puedas escuchar la pasión en nuestra música! He cantado en todas las ocasiones posibles desde temprana edad y siempre me ha gustado la música. Siento que la música ha sido una parte muy importante de mi vida y me ha ayudado a seguir adelante incluso en situaciones difíciles. No sé qué haría sin música y sin canto. Como cantante, creo que soy bastante versátil. Incluso podría ser que todavía no haya podido mostrar todo lo que puedo hacer con mi voz. El lado emocional es, por supuesto, para mí lo más importante y quiero que mi interpretación refleje la historia que quiero contar. Siempre trato de pensar cómo podría expresar mejor el mensaje o la atmósfera de la canción. Aunque tengo sensibilidad en mi canto, si es necesario también puedo tener la "ventaja" necesaria para entregar incluso las canciones de estilo rock rápido con mi propio estilo. Creo que tengo cierta originalidad en mi voz y en mi estilo y siempre trato de apegarme a esa cosa especial. Escribí algunas canciones pop cuando era más joven, pero de alguna manera simplemente se olvidaron. La primera banda de metal que escuché fue Metallica. Me gustó mucho el estilo de canto original y reconocible de James Hetfield y, por supuesto, también las grandes canciones de Metallica. También escuché a Stratovarius y me gustó la interpretación de Timo Kotipelto de sus canciones. Más tarde, me interesé en Within Temptation y la hermosa voz de Sharon den Adel, así como en la fuerte y emotiva interpretación de Evanescence y Amy Lee. También he escuchado Amorphis con Tomi Joutsen, que tiene un tono de voz verdaderamente agradable, así como secciones vocales más duras y ardientes. Muchas gracias por tu cortesía. Antes de hacer el álbum, tomé algunas lecciones de canto y practiqué el canto con la ayuda de Jake y el material en línea. Después de las sesiones de grabación tomé lecciones de canto de dos profesores diferentes, porque quería desarrollarme aún más como cantante. Ha sido realmente beneficioso porque nuestras canciones son técnicamente muy desafiantes para el cantante. Especialmente para las presentaciones en vivo, las lecciones de canto han sido realmente útiles.

Sí, soy muy apasionada y emotiva por el canto. Algunos han dicho que a veces sueno como Amy Lee y no me molesta porque ella es absolutamente genial. Pero aun así creo que tengo un estilo completamente propio para cantar e interpretar canciones, porque somos yo y mi voz. Hemos invertido en hacer que nuestras canciones se parezcan a nosotros y no queríamos restringirnos de ninguna manera al componerlas. Realmente no me estoy preparando para escribir una canción de ninguna manera en particular, pero las canciones solo vendrán si están por venir. A menudo, diferentes estados de ánimo afectan la forma en que se crean las canciones. A veces puede pasar mucho tiempo para que no me venga a la mente casi nada y, de repente, surgen muchas melodías y letras nuevas. A veces también pueden despertarme en medio de la noche, cuando no puedo dormir, y en su lugar empezar a tararear una canción y grabarla en el teléfono.

¡Gracias! Estoy muy feliz si he logrado lograr lo que era mi intención como cantante. Para ser honesta, no estoy segura de a qué género pertenece nuestra música, y no creemos que sea tan importante de todos modos. Quizás en su conjunto esté más cerca del metal alternativo, pero si escuchas las canciones por separado, puedes escuchar claramente influencias sinfónicas, góticas y pop, así como un poco de grunge y metal progresivo. De nuestras canciones puedes escuchar el variado gusto musical tanto de mí como de Jake (el guitarrista y otro compositor). Realmente no queríamos limitar nuestra música a ningún género, pero hicimos lo que pensamos que sonaba bien y ambos pensamos que encajaría con las canciones. Esto funcionó bien para nosotros porque una persona nunca puede tener razón en todas las cosas. También es bueno escuchar las opiniones de los demás.
Darkzen:
Woow creí que estaba escuchando mal! Pero me has dado la razón y en muchas de las canciones del albúm si logre escuchar esas mezclas musicales y opte por poner el estilo único.
Creo que nuestras emociones son el motor que nos mueve y la música y canto una forma de expresarlas, tu disco "Purposes and Promises", ¿qué tan sensible lo dirías?

Definitivamente estoy de acuerdo. Creo que la motivación detrás de cualquier arte tiene que ser la necesidad de expresarte a ti mismo y tus emociones y no creo que el álbum hubiera salido como lo hizo sin ciertas experiencias personales. Además de eso, por supuesto, hay una mezcla de imaginación, pero todavía siento que el álbum es muy personal y algo sensible.
Volviendo a su súper álbum "Purposes and Promises", ¿habrá nuevas grabaciones para otros videoclips?

Sí, estamos haciendo un video musical para la canción Broken, así como otro vídeo con letra y posiblemente otros videos musicales también.
