Official Biography of the band

​

2018, The spirit of the wolf  is reborn ...

​

Following different lives and musical paths since 2000, founder members of LEIDEN and IN LUPUS PACIS are now gathering for a brand new musical journey.

​

First of all, ULVAND trio is about real friendship and a strong will overtaking hard life experiences and self-questioning. Healing doubts and pain, time strengthened certainty, the will to walk together again and build this project as a real spiritual quest with sharing and sincerity as master words.

​

ULVAND (literally « wolf spirit ») refers to this complex animal in the collective unconscious mind, both cruel and protective, often feared and hunted, rarely understood but always brave and mysterious, forcing the admiration of men. Wolf spirit is about loyalty, courage and respect.

​

Both music and lyrics of the trio are full of those noble values, sharing and building a true lifestyle. Far from standards, ULVAND’s dark metal is modern and powerful. Electro sounds, programmed drums, classical landscapes (cellos, violins, organs and percussions), heavy guitars and bass carry a meaningful duet voices. Strong male growls and ethereal female vocals both collide and complement each other in a beautiful musical dance. ULVAND’s music is powerful, melancholic and dark, with atmospheric and symphonic elements.

Hello Beran thank you very much for this interview! How have you been? Welcome to Darkzen Dragon Metal Angels!

Tell us about yourself! Where does Beran come from within this musical genre?

​

Beran:

​

Béran est mon surnom, mon vrai prénom est Bérangère. Je viens du Sud de la France, près de Toulouse. Toute petite, j’étais fan de Madonna et chantais déjà ses chansons à tue tête. A l’adolecence, j’ai écouté beaucoup  de punk puis de rock (Sex pistols, Nirvana, Red hot chili peppers…) puis je suis progressivement venue au métal par des groupes comme Métallica, Guns N’ Roses. A l’approche de mes 20 ans, j’ai ensuite découvert le métal atmosphérique avec des groupes comme Tiamat, Anathema, My dying Bride, Celestial Season que j’apprécie beaucoup, puis j’en suis venue à écouter beaucoup de métal avec chant féminin quand ont commencé à apparaître The Gathering, Théatre of Tragedy, The 3rd and the mortal dans cette scène, ça a été comme une révélation pour moi, je trouvais que celà rajoutait quelque chose d’original, à la fois puissant et mélancolique, je me reconnaissais totalement dans cette musique. Fan de chant, je chantonnais souvent sous la douche et ce n’est qu’à l’âge de 20 ans que Wilfried et Serge, qui m’avaient surprise un jour, m’ont proposé de chanter dans leur 1er groupe, alors même que je n’avais jamais pris un cours de ma vie. Au début je croyais que c’était une blague, je ne me sentais pas du tout capable, puis j’ai quand même décidé  d’aller à l’audition et j’ai été prise à ma grande surprise ! C’était mes début dans In lupus Pacis.

​

Béran is my nickname, my real first name is Bérangère. I come from the South of France, near Toulouse. Music has always been a part of me. When I was a little girl, I was a fan of Madonna and sang her songs tirelessly. As a teenager, I listened to a lot of punk and rock music (Sex pistols, Nirvana, Red hot chili peppers ...) then I gradually came to metal by bands like Metallica, Guns N’ Roses. At the approach of my 20 years, I  discovered atmospheric metal with bands like Tiamat, Anathema, My dying Bride, Celestial Season which I really like, then I started listening to a lot of metal with female vocals when The Gathering, Theatre of Tragedy, The 3rd and the mortal started to emerge in this scene : it was like a revelation for me, I found that it added something original, both powerful and melancholic,  I totally recognized myself in this kind of music. I often sang in secret and it was only at the age of 20 that Wilfried (Composing, guitars) and Serge (vocals, bass), who had surprised me one day, offered me to sing in their 1st band. I had never taken a singing lesson in my entire life, at first I thought it was a joke. I did not feel capable at all, but I still decided to go to the audition and against all odds, it was a success! It was my debut in In Lupus Pacis.

Well, you have an excellent voice!

 

Do you have hobbies? Which are?

Beran:

​

J’adore voyager et rencontrer de nouvelles cultures  mais n’ai malheureusement pas les moyens financiers de le faire autant que j’aimerais, chanter bien sûr, je suis également fan de séries policères.

​

I love to travel and meet new cultures (but unfortunately, I do not have the financial means to do it as much as I would like), and to sing of course ! I am also a huge fan of detective series.

 

What are your musical influences?

​

Beran:

​

Je ne sais pas trop ce que sont les influences. Je peux tout simplement citer les groupes que j’aime, je ne sais pas si ça se retrouve dans ma manière de chanter ou de composer les mélodies. Comme je te le disais, j’ai été bercée avec Madonna. Et les groupes qui ont contribué à me mettre au chant sont clairement The Gathering, Theatre of Tragedy, the 3rd and the mortal et Dead Can Dance. J’adore aussi le groupe Tactile Gemma qui n’a malheureusement pas fait beaucoup parler de lui, leur album est fabuleux ! Mais je n’écoute pas que du métal (j’en écoute peu à vrai dire), j’aime aussi beaucoup le classique, la musique ethnique et l’électro et le trip hop.

I'm not sure what the influences are. I can simply quote the bands that I like, I don't know if that is reflected in my way of singing or composing the melodies. Like I told you, I was cradled with Madonna’s pop.  But the bands that motivated me to sing are clearly The Gathering, Theatre of Tragedy, the 3rd and the mortal and Dead Can Dance.

 

I also love the band Tactile Gemma which unfortunately did not have the success it deserved, their unique album is amazing! But I don't just listen to metal (I don't really listen to much of it), I also really like classical, ethnic music, electro and trip hop.

 

Do you have favorite singers? Which are? And how do you train vocally?

​

Beran:

​

Oh oui il y a beaucoup de chanteuses que j’adore et admire: Kari Rueslatten, Tori Amos (je suis une grande fan), Lisa Gerrard, Anneke van Giersbergenen, Alison Goldfrapp, Cristina Scabbia,  Lana del Rey, Agnes Obel…

Chez les hommes, j’adore la voix de Serj Tankjan et Orphaned Land, Tamino un jeune chanteur belge prometteur.

​

Pour ce qui est de l’entrainement vocal, je travaille mes parties d’Ulvand seule ou en trépétition avec Wilfried et Serge mais je prends également des cours ave une prof de chant afin d’améliorer ma technique car comme je te le disais,je me suis mise au chant  comme ça sans avoir pris le moindre cours. Etre autodidacte, c’est bien mais tu atteins une limite à moment donné.  J’ai envie de m’améliorer et de corriger des mauvais habitudes que j’ai prises par rapport à mon geste vocal et qui me limitent dans ce que j’aimerais produire.

​

Oh yes there are many singers that I adore and admire : Kari Rueslåtten, Tori Amos (I am a big fan), Lisa Gerrard, Anneke van Giersbergen, Alison Goldfrapp, Cristina Scabbia, Lana del Rey, Agnes Obel…As for the men, I love the voice of Serj Tankjan (SOD), Kobi Farhi (Orphaned land) and Tamino (a young promising belgian singer.)

In terms of vocal training, I work my parts of Ulvånd alone or in rehearsal with Wilfried and Serge but I also take lessons with a singing teacher to improve my technique because as I told you, I started singing without taking a single lesson. Being self-taught is good, but you reach a limit at some point. I want to improve myself and correct bad habits in my vocal gesture that limit me in what I would like to produce

 

Besides being a singer, do you have any other occupation? Another project?

​

Beran:

​

Je suis loin d’être chanteuse à temps complet, c’est plutôt l’inverse ! La musique est un hobbie pour le moment. Nous avons tous une activité professionnele pour subvenir aux besoins de nos familles et faisons de la musique par passion car  elle en nous permet pas d’en vivre.  Je travaille pour la mairie de ma ville.

​

I'm far from being a full-time singer, it's quite the opposite! Music is a hobby for the moment. We all have a professional activity to provide for our families and we make music out of passion because it does not allow us to make a living from it. I work for the town hall of my city.

I think it's great to have another job too.

 

Why Ulvand band and this musical style of Dark Metal?

​

Beran:

​

Je pense avoir expliqué plus haut comment  j’en étais progressivement venue au dark metal. Les ambiances me plaisent énormément, j’aime la beauté qui se dégage  de ce genre musical, à la fois puissant et fragile, mélaconlique et beau. Je trouve qu’il y a une atmosphère spécifique et une poésie que je en retrouve pas dans d’autres styles.

​

Pour ce qui est d’Ulvand, j’ai joué quelques années dans In Lupus Pacis avec Serge et Wilfired, puis le groupe s’est arrêté. Wilfried et moi avons ensuite créé Leiden, groupe de dark qui avait une petite notoriété en France et nous a permis de faire pas mal de dates en France et quelques-unes à l’étranger. Suite au split de ce groupe en 2007, nous avons arrêté la musique et nous sommes concentrés sur nos vies de familles et le travail.. Wilfried et moi avons revu Serge au cours d’une soirée en 2018 et nous avons parlé de refaire un projet ensemble, et c’est comme cela qu’Ulvand est né, avce le même line-up que lors de nos débuts avec ILP en 2000!

​

I think I explained above how I gradually came to dark metal. The moods please me a lot, I love the beauty that radiates from this musical genre, both powerful and fragile, melancholic and beautiful. I find that there is a specific atmosphere and a poetry that I do not find in other styles.

 

As for Ulvånd, I played a few years in In Lupus Pacis with Serge and Wilfried, then the band split up in 2000. We took separated paths and Wilfried and I then created Leiden, another dark metal band that had a little reputation in France and allowed us to do a lot of gigs  in France and a few abroad. Following the split of this group in 2007, we stopped the music and we focused on our family lives and work. After a long break without music, Wilfried and I met Serge again during an evening in 2018 and we talked about redoing a project together, we all really missed the music and felt the spark again, and that's how Ulvånd was born, with the same line-up as when we started with ILP !

 

Under that concept is based your album?

​

Beran:

​

Il n’y a pas de concept particulier sur cet E.P.  C’est notre 1ere réalisation après un long silence, donc nous parlons de thèmes et d’histoires qui font échos en nous. Chaque morceau à son univers et sa thématique. Una Vida….., Human Zoo…. Chaque morceau a son histoire, cela peut partir d’un fait vécu, de l’actualité ou d’une histoire ou situation imaginée. Ce qui est certain, c’est que tous nos morceaux et nos textes restent dans l’esprit dark, sombres et mélancoliques.

​

There is no particular concept on this E.P. It is our 1st release after a long silence, so we are talking about themes and stories that echo in us.

 

The lyrics of our songs always deal with topics close to home and also our emotions. They sometimes spawn from situations we’ve been in or simply things care about and each piece has its own universe and its theme. Una Vida, for example touches on the tragedy that hits Syrian people and the denial of the international community. Another example is Human Zoo which honors Abraham Ulrikab, an Inuit from Labrador in Canada. He and his family were exposed in human zoos 19th century Europe. Despair speaks of the pain and distress that overcomes you when confronted with the loss of a loved one,while The Pack, Chrysalis or 7 Virtues touch in human values and philosophy. In short, our array of inspiration spans vastly, is universal and at the same time, very intimate.  What is certain is that all of our songs and lyrics stay in the dark and melancholy spirit.

 

Who are the composers and writers of the lyrics for each of your songs? Did you write any one?

Beran:

​

C’est Wilfired qui compose toute la musique et Serge qui écrit l’intégralité des textes. Le processus de composition est souvent le même : Wilfired part d’un riff……….et je compose mes lignes de chant.

​

Pour l’écriture, Serge est très prolifique, il avait pas mal de textes donc je me suis essentiellement concentrée sur mes mélodies au chant mais je compte bien écrire quelques textes sur le prochain, comme je le faisais dans les formations antérieures.

​

Wilfried composes all the music and Serge writes the entire lyrics. The composition process  is often the same: Wilfried starts from a guitar riff or a drum beat that he develops, then he applies a bass line and adds chords and/or electro sounds. Once the music has been validated, Serge & I confer on a style of text to match the music and who is going to sing this or that part. Then I find my melodies, Serge his vocal patterns and his own bass lines. Everyone fills their role and we work well that way.

 

If need be, we let the structure evolve and shift to arrangements all together. But that is not the only way we work. We have also started from a text which influences the atmosphere and rhythm of a piece. 

 

For the writing process, Serge is very prolific, he wrote a lot of texts so I mainly concentrated on my melodies on these songs but I intend to write a few texts on the next release, as I did in the previous formations.

 

I see that you released the 6 songs with their respective 6 videos, do you have any special favorite songs?

​

Beran:

​

En fait, nous avons seulement un clip officel “human zoo”. Wilfried avait également réalisé lui-même une animation pour accompagner les autres morceaux. Personnellemnt, j’ai un coup de coeur pour “Despair”, c’est un morceau que je trouve très puissant au niveau de l’atmosphère et du texte et que j’adore chanter.

In fact, we only have an official videoclip: “Human zoo”.  It was a great experience. Wilfried had also produced an animation himself to go with the other songs.

 

My favorite song ? Personally, I have a crush on “Despair”, it's a song that I find very powerful in terms of atmosphere and text and that I love to sing.

 

Will you release another video clip?

​

Beran:

​

Bien sûr, nous rêverions de faire un 2nd clip, nous avons dejà beaucoup d’idées mais malheureusement, ce n’est pas d’actualité.

​

Pour cet E.P., ne disposant pas de label ni d’aide extérieure, nous avons tout réalisé et financé nous-même : l’enregistrement (avec Wilfried aux manettes), le pressage, la pochette (également réalisée par Wilfired, il est très polyvalent), la promotion (heureusement Monica nous aide depuis peu), le clip… tout ceci coûte très cher et vu que nous ne roulons pas sur l’or, nous ne pouvons pas nous permettre de sortir un 2nd clip tout simplement car nous n’avons pas le budget. C’est très compliqué d’être un groupe autoproduit de nos jours.

​

Of course, we would dream of making a 2nd clip, we already have a lot of ideas but unfortunately, it is not possible at the moment.

​

For this EP, since we had no label or outside help, we did and financed everything ourselves: the recording (with Wilfried at the helm), the pressing, the cover (also done by Wilfried, he is very versatile!), the promotion (luckily Monica Atzei helped us recently), the videoclip ...

​

All this has a cost! We cannot afford to release a 2nd clip simply because we do not have the required budget. It's very complicated to be a self-produced band these days.

The album was very good, congratulations and also to Monica for this great support for you.

 

Your E.P The Origins is very good work, I like how you combine both voices! The male voice and yours, Are working on their debut album? If so, will it be with these songs too?

​

Beran:

​

Merci beaucoup, contente que ça te plaise! Oui tout à fait, la suite logique à cet E.P sera notre 1er album. Nous avons deja quelques morceaux mais nos vies de famille et activités professionnelles ne nous laissent pas beaucoup de temps pour composer, nous allons donc à notre rythme, sans nous mettre la pression. Nous préférons prendre le temps de bien faire les choses plutôt que de bâcler le travail (et “The origins” est sorti il y a quelques mois à peine). Le futur album ne devrait pas comporter de morceaux de l’E.P, ce ne seront que des nouvelles chansons, mais nous pensons réenregistrer nos 2 premiers morceaux : “Lioness” et “The pack”. Nous affectionnons particulièrement ces morceaux, ce sera l’occasion de les enregistrer dans de bonnes conditions.

Mais pour l’heure, avant de penser à l’album, nous nous concentrons sur la préparation du live, pour être fin prêts lorsque la situation sanitaire permetttra de faire à nouveau des concerts. Nous avons hâte de pouvoir partager avec le public!

Thank you very much, glad you like it! Yes absolutely, the logical continuation of this E.P will be the release of our 1st album. We already have a few pieces but our family lives and professional activities don't leave us much time to compose, so we go at our own pace, without putting pressure on ourselves. We'd rather take the time to get it right than rush the job (and “The origins” came out just a few months ago!). The future album shouldn't have any EP tracks, they'll just be new songs, but we're thinking of re-recording our first 2 tracks: “Lioness” and “The pack”. We are particularly fond of these songs, it will be an opportunity to record them in good conditions.

 

But for now, before thinking about the album, we are concentrating on rehearsing for live events, to be fully prepared when the sanitary situation will allow us to do concerts again. We have not yet performed live with Ulvånd and we can’t wait to meet our audience and share our universe!

 

The album cover is very creative, inspiring and eye-catching! It's been a while since I saw something like this, you invite me to listen to that production, what do you think of this?

Beran:

​

Merci! Tout le mérite revient à Wilfried qui a une formation de graphiste. C’est bien normal de lui avoir confié ce travail : qui aurait été davantage légitime que lui pour retranscrire par l’image les émotions que nous tentons de transmettre au travers de la musique? Nous apportons une grande importance à l’esthétique, un CD ce n’est pas que de la musique, c’est un objet, une oeuvre d’art, un univers et l’image est là pour accompagner le son.

Pour ce qui est de la pochette, nous voulions quelque chose de mystérieux, et résolument moderne, je pense que le challenge est relevé!

Thank you! All the credit goes to Wilfried who designed the cover (He’s a graphic designer.) It is quite normal to have entrusted him with this job: who would have been more legitimate than him to transcribe through images the emotions that we are trying to convey through music? We attach great importance to aesthetics, a CD is not just music, it is an object, a work of art, the visual is very important too.

 

As for the cover, we wanted something mysterious, and resolutely modern, I think the challenge is up!

 

Presentations for the moment seems to me not possible, but some live on any social network? For your fans

Beran:

​

Effectivement, comme je te le disais plus haut, nous attendons avec impatience la reprise des concerts et nous nous préaparons pour. Malheureusement, la situation sanitaire est telle que nous ignorons quand la pandémie sera derrière nous et quand cela sera à nouveau possible. Il faut s’armer de patience et surtout, à titre individuel, faire tout pour limiter la propagation du virus en appliquant les gestes barrière pour se protéger soi-même et protéger les autres.

​

Nous n’avons pas fait de live sur le net, n’ayant pas encore fait de vériatble concert avec du public sous l’étiquette Ulvand, cela nous paraissait bizarre de le faire via le net. Wilfried et moi avons enregistré une reprise acoustique de Third and the mortal pendant le confinement, c’est tout ce que nous avons fait pour le moment.

​

Indeed, as I told you above, we are impatiently awaiting the resumption of concerts and we are preparing for. Unfortunately, the health situation is such that we do not know when the pandemic will be behind us and when it will be possible again. You have to be patient and above all, individually, do everything to limit the spread of the virus by applying barrier gestures to protect yourself and protect others.

 

We haven't done a live on the net,  since we had not yet done real concerts as Ulvånd , it seemed weird to us doing it through the net. Wilfried and I recorded an acoustic cover of Third and the Mortal while in lockdown, that's all we've done for now.

Non, je pense que nous avons fait le tour pour ce qui est de l’actualité d’Ulvand. Je rajouterai : en ces temps diffíciles, prenez soin de vous et de vos proches et continuez d’écouter de la musique!

Merci à toi. Nous sommes très touchés que notre musique parvienne à traverser les frontières et trouve écho à l’étranger. Merci de donner la parole à des petits groupes comme nous, c’est très important pour nous à l’ère où les magazines papiers sont en voie de disparition, où les chroniques se monneyent souvent et les CD ne se vendent quasiement plus et où, au vu de la myriade de groupes qui emergente partout, il est de plus en plus difficile de se faire une place.

​

J’en profite aussi pour remercier chaleureusement MONICA, qui s’occupe de notre promo à l’étranger et qui fait un travail titanesque pour nous faire connaître!

Thanks to you. We are very touched that our music manages to cross borders and find echoes abroad. Thank you for giving the floor to small groups like us, it is very important for us in the era where paper magazines are in the process of disappearing, where chronicles are often monetized and CDs hardly sell anymore and where, in view of the myriad of bands emerging everywhere, it is increasingly difficult to find a place.
