Rioghan is a solo project performed by singer Rioghan Darcy. Rioghan was founded in 2019 and is based on Lapua, Finland. Rooted deeply in both gothic and progressive metal scenes, she sure should bring something interesting on the table. She started off in 2010 as a poetry and lyric writer, but in 2019 she finally wanted to add some more to the mix and decided to fleshen up some of her words with music. She teamed up with a few skilled songwriters and together they came up with a 4 song EP “Blackened Sky”, which will be released in early 2021. Live lineup is still in the making, but live shows will hopefully start in 2021 with the EP release.
Finnish Rioghan is set to release her debut EP Blackened Sky on March 10th 2021 via Inverse Records.

Emma! Thank you very much for this interview! How are you?
Emma:
Thank you for requesting this interview and for promoting my new project. Everything’s fine here despite this whole global pandemic going on..
Tell us a little about yourself! ¿Tell us about your musical career?
Emma:
There’s really not that much to tell about my musical career so far, as I consider it really just begun fully with this project. I have been playing keys in a few projects before but I gave that up when I wanted to concentrate on singing practice instead.
What was your musical training?
Emma:
I have gone to piano classes since I was 7 years old but never really made up my mind if I wanted to play just the piano or if I wanted to learn to meddle with synthesizers, so I ended up doing both poorly and eventually quit the whole thing. Finally I got the courage to sign up for singing classes when I was a bit over 20 years old and then it really hit me; this was the thing I was meant to do!
Who are your favourite singers?
Emma:
There are lots of them, but just to name a few I’d say my biggest influencers and idols would be Anneke Van Giersbergen, Steven Wilson, Terhi Kokkonen and Einar Solberg.
Do you play any instrument? Do you have any hobbie?
Emma:
I did play the piano but quit, yet maybe secretly still sometimes find myself playing for my own amusement.. As for hobbies, I write poetry and when I need to unwind I’ll hang out with my dogs.
You have a smooth and clean tone of voice, what is your voice range?
Emma:
Thank you, I have to say I haven’t really figured out my range yet because I’ve been taught it is forever growing with practice. My goal is to learn as many different techniques as I can so I have a wide skill set to use and can express myself in any way I want to.
Tell us about this project Rioghan!, On that emotional and musical theme is based your EP "Blackened Sky"? Because the lyrics say about an important moment in your life and a poem
Emma:
There really isn’t a recurring theme within the EP, but the lyrics have been rearranged from my poems, some older and some more recent. Some of them are of course some kind of self reflections but everyone understands them in their own way and from their own point of view.
Your project is very interesting, does it have a combination of Folk from your country? Or just the Goth / Progressive base
Emma:
Obviously the Finnish mindset probably shines through and it is pretty easy to find inspiration for gloomy and gothic things here in the heart of the darkness, but I wouldn’t necessarily say we have folk in the musical aspects of the songs.
You have a beautiful look! and the cover of your EP is great! very natural! why did you choose that aesthetic?
Emma:
Thank you, I appreciate your kindness! I just kind of went where my mind led me that day and also trying to be as much as myself as possible. We had all necessary equipment (like goats, who doesn’t have goats in their yard?) at hand for the photoshoot so we tried different set-ups and chose the ones that worked best.
Tell us why the production of the video Hollowness was difficult
Emma:
Video shoot was actually really easy, the song composing was the hard part! We just had too many good components which then again didn’t seem to fit together despite all the rearranging and tossing and turning.. But after a small rage quit in demo recording, we scrapped the whole song, left the lyric and some of the vocal melody and started over, and then the puzzle pieces started to click together.
What is the basis for you to compose a song? Is it the emotion and feeling or is there something else?
Emma:
I always have a lyric first and the emotion which comes through it. I am not really a composer myself so I had a few songwriters to work with me to compose the songs for this EP.

What do you say to your fans to stay tuned for the release of your EP?
Emma:
The next single “Enough” came out this 16th December, and is A LOT different from this first single, you should check it out and see how far we’ve gone from the ethereal tunes of Hollowness..
Anything else you would like to share with us or say?
Emma:
I’ve already started to lock plans for a full length album, which we start making next year. Some super interesting collaborations already confirmed for songwriting!

Rioghan Darcy comments:
"This was the hardest song for us to finish. We edited it multiple times and even re-did the whole song once. After all the trouble, somehow it became the one for introducing this project to the world. The lyrics were made from one of my older poems and adding some wider perspective around it. This particular poem was very personal to me, but somehow it was refreshing to update it now when my own mindset has changed a bit from the time it was made."

Rioghan es un proyecto en solitario realizado por la cantante Rioghan Darcy. Rioghan se fundó en 2019 y tiene su sede en Lapua, Finlandia. Arraigada profundamente en escenas góticas y de metal progresivo, seguro que debería traer algo interesante sobre la mesa. Comenzó en 2010 como escritora de poesía y lírica, pero en 2019 finalmente quiso agregar un poco más a la mezcla y decidió enriquecer algunas de sus palabras con música. Se asoció con algunos compositores expertos y juntos crearon un EP de 4 canciones, "Blackened Sky", que se lanzará a principios de 2021. Emma:
Gracias por esta entrevista y por promover mi nuevo proyecto. Todo está bien aquí a pesar de toda esta pandemia mundial en curso ...
¡Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti! ¿Cuéntanos sobre tu carrera musical?
Emma:
Realmente no hay mucho que contar sobre mi carrera musical hasta ahora, ya que considero que realmente acaba de comenzar por completo con este proyecto. He estado tocando teclas en algunos proyectos antes, pero lo dejé cuando quería concentrarme en la práctica de canto.
¿Cuál fue tu formación musical?
Emma:
He ido a clases de piano desde que tenía 7 años, pero nunca me decidí realmente si quería tocar solo el piano o si quería aprender a entrometerme con los sintetizadores, así que terminé haciendo ambas cosas mal y finalmente lo dejé. Finalmente tuve el coraje de apuntarme a clases de canto cuando tenía un poco más de 20 años y luego me di cuenta; ¡esto era lo que estaba destinada a hacer!
¿Quiénes son tus cantantes favoritos?
Emma:
Hay muchos de ellos, pero solo por nombrar algunos, diría que mis mayores influencers e ídolos serían Anneke Van Giersbergen, Steven Wilson, Terhi Kokkonen y Einar Solberg.
¿Tocas algun instrumento? ¿Tienes algún hobbie?
Emma:
Toqué el piano, pero lo dejé, aunque tal vez en secreto todavía a veces me encuentro tocando para mi propia diversión. En cuanto a pasatiempos, escribo poesía y cuando necesito relajarme, salgo con mis perros.
Tienes un tono de voz suave y limpio, ¿Cuál es tu rango de voz?
Emma:
Gracias, tengo que decir que todavía no he descubierto mi rango porque me han enseñado que siempre crece con la práctica. Mi objetivo es aprender tantas técnicas diferentes como pueda para tener un amplio conjunto de habilidades para usar y poder expresarme de la manera que quiera.
¡Cuéntanos sobre este proyecto Rioghan !, ¿En ese tema emocional y musical se basa tu EP "Blackened Sky"? Porque la letra dice sobre un momento importante de tu vida y un poema
Emma:
Realmente no hay un tema recurrente dentro del EP, pero la letra ha sido reordenada de mis poemas, algunos más antiguos y otros más recientes. Algunos de ellos son, por supuesto, algún tipo de autorreflexión, pero todos los entienden a su manera y desde su propio punto de vista.
Tu proyecto es muy interesante, ¿tiene una combinación de Folk de tu país? O simplemente la base Goth / Progressive
Emma:
Obviamente, la mentalidad finlandesa probablemente brilla y es bastante fácil encontrar inspiración para cosas lúgubres y góticas aquí en el corazón de la oscuridad, pero no necesariamente diría que tenemos folk en los aspectos musicales de las canciones.
¡Tienes un hermoso look! ¡y la portada de tu EP es genial! ¡muy natural! ¿Por qué elegiste esa estética?
Emma:
¡Gracias, agradezco tu amabilidad! Simplemente fui donde mi mente me llevó ese día y también intenté ser lo más yo misma posible. Teníamos todo el equipo necesario (como cabras, ¿Quién no tiene cabras en su patio?) A mano para la sesión de fotos, así que probamos diferentes configuraciones y elegimos las que funcionaron mejor.
Cuéntanos por qué fue difícil la producción del video Hollowness
Emma:
La grabación del video fue realmente fácil, ¡la composición de la canción fue la parte difícil! Simplemente teníamos demasiados componentes buenos que, de nuevo, no parecían encajar a pesar de todo el reordenamiento y los giros y vueltas. Pero después de una pequeña rabia que se detuvo en la grabación de demostración, desechamos toda la canción, dejamos la letra y parte de la melodía vocal y comenzó de nuevo, y luego las piezas del rompecabezas comenzaron a encajar.
¿Cuál es la base para componer una canción? ¿Es la emoción y el sentimiento o hay algo más?
Emma:
Siempre tengo una letra primero y la emoción que la transmite. Yo no soy realmente un compositor, así que tuve algunos compositores para trabajar conmigo para componer las canciones de este EP.
¿Alguna transmisión en vivo tal vez?
Emma:
Quizás en algún momento ...
¿Qué les dices a tus fans para estar atentos con el lanzamiento de tu EP?
Emma:
El siguiente single "Enough" salió el 16 de diciembre, y es MUCHO muy diferente de este primer single, deberías echarle un vistazo y ver qué tan lejos hemos ido de las melodías etéreas de Hollowness ...
¿Algo más que te gustaría compartir con nosotros o decirnos?
Emma:
Ya comencé a trabar planes para un álbum de larga duración, que comenzaremos a hacer el próximo año. ¡Algunas colaboraciones súper interesantes ya confirmadas para la composición!

"Esta fue la canción más difícil de terminar para nosotros. La editamos varias veces e incluso volvimos a hacer toda la canción una vez. Después de todos los problemas, de alguna manera se convirtió en la que presentó este proyecto al mundo. La letra se hizo a partir de una de mis poemas más antiguos y agregando una perspectiva más amplia al respecto. Este poema en particular fue muy personal para mí, pero de alguna manera fue refrescante actualizarlo ahora que mi propia mentalidad ha cambiado un poco desde el momento en que se hizo ".
