Metalwings is a Bulgarian symphonic/gothic metal band with Celtic influence, formed by the vocalist and viola player Stela Atanasova in 2010.
The band was founded in Autumn 2010 by classically trained vocalist and songwriter Stela Atanasova. Stela’s idea was to combine elements of classical music with the melodic genres of metal. The style is considered as Symphonic, Gothic metal with female operatic vocals.
Metalwings is an unqiue combination of powerful guitars, angelic vocals and the gentle sound of viola. The hymn-melodic and epically uplifting CLASSIC SYMPHONIC METAL of the Sofia based formation combines the finest elements of classical music and the timeless world of Opera.
Hello my dear friend Stela! How have you been? And very nice to have an interview with you again! Welcome to Darkzen Dragón Metal Angels
Stela:
I’ve been doing great. Thank you so much for the oppurtunity to talk again.
Stela and your band Metalwings have more than ten years, with important albums, how did you spend this time of pandemic that affects us all? Especially in the creation of a new album
Stela:
During the pandemic, we didn't stop rehearsing even for a moment because we were preparing the album and we couldn't afford to interrupt this process. In general, the pandemic slightly delayed the recording of the album and the release of the video for the album's single, but in no way prevented us from recording and finishing our new album in the best way.
"A Whole New Land" Album, was it difficult to record the songs for this new album?
Stela:
Due to the fact that the songs in our new album sound much heavier, dynamic, with much more intense drums, there were also difficult moments during the recording. In addition to the lead vocals, I recorded a lot of backing vocals, which was also a very difficult process to get the best sync between all the voices. But of course, recording any album requires maximum effort and all the energy, thought and concentration you are capable of.
What are the stories behind your new album? Is it emotional? Is it conceptual? Or is it just a new production?
Stela:
The album is conceptual, full of emotion and presenting a completely new production from our band. The story behind the album is about the journey of a little girl in search of a new land, where the last people are left, bringing kindness, courage and honor.
Where did the ideas for the production of this new album come from? What inspires you?
Stela:
As we know, art reflects the reality in which we live. This album reflects the times in which we live in recent years and what people have become, driven by their own interests, selfishness and vanity. My main inspiration is Life we live. I see what people's dreams turn into, as well as how love is transformed. I don't like people's desire to have everything - at the moment. The fact that they don't care at all where all the resources we live on come from. The fact that one thinks only of expensive cars, accessories, homes, but very few people think and protect nature - very few people live in peace with themselves. Everyone lives for themselves and their own interests. We have become too materialistic and too selfish. I am looking for a new land and new people who love the land they live on, take care of it and plant trees.
After the album release, your album is great in production, lyrics and music. Are you satisfied with your new album?
Stela:
We are completely satisfied with the album which we released in all of its aspects - as music, arrangement, lyrics and sound. I think we did something spectacular, especially for an independent band, especially during a pandemic. Once again we raised the level high, we created an album that is many times more complex in terms of composition. Jens Bogren mixed and mastered the album - he achieved the sound we wanted from the beginning. We were uncompromising to the quality, complexity and detail in each song. We are absolitely satisfied with our new album ‘A Whole New Land’.
The cover of "A Whole New Land" What does it describe for you?
Stela:
The album cover shows the main idea behind each song, which tells about life and what people without dreams become. Our actions will sooner or later have consequences, but there will be few people who will take responsibility for their actions. Rather, the price will again have to be paid by the innocent. But my dream is precisely the innocent, the noble and the brave - to stand up, unite and win their independence. When all predators and their victims live in peace, the world will have no boundaries. This is the message of the cover.
Why the Monster in the Mirror song? What is behind this song, especially because of the name that describes it?
Stela:
It was because of its name that we decided that this would be the first strong impression that would provoke the audience to hear and see the video as well as the album. That's why we chose this song as a single for the album. In addition, this song combines all aspects of our album - heavy guitars, powerful orchestration, aggressive and dynamic parts, which contrast with tender and romantic moments.
Will there be another release of any new video?
Stela:
Yes, but I still can't say when.
In these times of Pandemic still, Development versus stagnation or exceeding your own limits?
Stela:
We did not allow the pandemic in any way to change our attitude and our desire to make the music we love. I accept every problem or obstacle as a new opportunity.
How is Metalwings different from other bands in this genre of Symphonic Metal?
Stela:
You don't have to be different. The important thing is to be true to yourself and that is enough to be unique. We are just like that. We have our own style, sound and beauty of our music. But this, of course, will be heard and appreciated only by those who listen to music with their hearts.
Do you think there is currently a problem with the music industry or did the pandemic accentuate it? How much do you miss the concerts?
Stela:
I definitely think that there is a problem in the music industry and it is that quality art is no longer valued and promoted, but visual and attractive. Apparently there is a problem when long-term members of famous bands leave, and others even break up. There is an industry, but it is not designed to help artists - it’s made to let someone else benefit from them. And yes, the pandemic has exposed these problems, because it turns out that most bands survive only on tour, when they can sell merchandise. The price of being famous in most cases is to lose your freedom as an artist and constantly be on tour so that you can survive. We chose to be not so popular, but free. Yes, we miss the concerts, but that will pass. Unlike bands that have labels behind them, we do it all by ourselves and we believe that sooner or later the industry will change and more independent artists like us will go on the big stage and get the attention they deserve. The independent bands deserve popularity no less than those who are imposed everywhere.
Any live stream on a social network later to keep spreading your new album?
Stela:
So far we have not considered such options, because it is not easy to organize such an event, but the idea is great and at some point, we can do live streaming.

Stela:

Metalwings es una banda búlgara de metal sinfónico / gótico con influencia celta, formada por la vocalista y viola Stela Atanasova en 2010.
La banda fue fundada en otoño de 2010 por la cantante y compositora de formación clásica Stela Atanasova. La idea de Stela era combinar elementos de la música clásica con los géneros melódicos del metal. El estilo se considera metal gótico sinfónico con voces operísticas femeninas.
Metalwings es una combinación única de potentes guitarras, voces angelicales y el suave sonido de la viola. El CLASSIC SYMPHONIC METAL himno melódico y épicamente edificante de la formación basada en Sofía combina los mejores elementos de la música clásica y el mundo atemporal de la ópera.

Stela:
He estado bien. Muchas gracias por la oportunidad de volver a hablar.
Stela y su banda Metalwings tienen más de diez años, con discos importantes, ¿Cómo pasaron esta época de pandemia que nos afecta a todos? Especialmente en la creación de un nuevo álbum.
Stela:
Durante la pandemia, no dejamos de ensayar ni por un momento porque estábamos preparando el álbum y no podíamos permitirnos interrumpir este proceso. En general, la pandemia retrasó un poco la grabación del álbum y el lanzamiento del video del single del álbum, pero de ninguna manera nos impidió grabar y terminar nuestro nuevo álbum de la mejor manera.
El Álbum "A Whole New Land", ¿Fue difícil grabar las canciones de este nuevo álbum?
Stela:
Debido a que las canciones de nuestro nuevo disco suenan mucho más pesadas, dinámicas, con una batería mucho más intensa, también hubo momentos difíciles durante la grabación. Además de la voz principal, grabé muchos coros, lo que también fue un proceso muy difícil para obtener la mejor sincronización entre todas las voces. Pero, por supuesto, grabar cualquier disco requiere el máximo esfuerzo y toda la energía, el pensamiento y la concentración de los que eres capaz.
¿Cuáles son las historias detrás de su nuevo álbum? ¿Es emocional? ¿Es conceptual? ¿O es solo una nueva producción?
Stela:
El álbum es conceptual, lleno de emoción y presenta una producción completamente nueva de nuestra banda. La historia detrás del álbum trata sobre el viaje de una niña pequeña en busca de una nueva tierra, donde quedan las últimas personas, trayendo bondad, coraje y honor.
¿De dónde surgieron las ideas para la producción de este nuevo álbum? ¿Qué te inspira?
Stela:
Como sabemos, el arte refleja la realidad en la que vivimos. Este disco refleja la época en la que vivimos en los últimos años y en lo que se ha convertido la gente, impulsada por sus propios intereses, egoísmo y vanidad. Mi principal inspiración es la vida que vivimos. Veo en qué se convierten los sueños de las personas y también cómo se transforma el amor. No me gusta el deseo de la gente de tenerlo todo, en este momento. El hecho de que no les importa en absoluto de dónde provienen todos los recursos con los que vivimos. El hecho de que uno solo piense en autos caros, accesorios, casas, pero muy pocas personas piensen y protejan la naturaleza, muy pocas personas viven en paz consigo mismas. Todos viven para sí mismos y sus propios intereses. Nos hemos vuelto demasiado materialistas y egoístas. Estoy buscando una nueva tierra y nuevas personas que amen la tierra en la que viven, la cuiden y planten árboles.
Después del lanzamiento del álbum, su álbum es excelente en producción, letras y música. ¿Estás satisfecha con tu nuevo álbum?
Stela:
Estamos completamente satisfechos con el álbum que lanzamos en todos sus aspectos: música, arreglos, letras y sonido. Creo que hicimos algo espectacular, especialmente para una banda independiente, especialmente durante una pandemia. Una vez más subimos el nivel alto, creamos un álbum que es muchas veces más complejo en términos de composición. Jens Bogren mezcló y masterizó el álbum, logró el sonido que queríamos desde el principio. Fuimos inflexibles con la calidad, complejidad y detalle de cada canción. Estamos absolutamente satisfechos con nuestro nuevo álbum "A Whole New Land".
La portada de "A Whole New Land" ¿Qué te describe?
Stela:
La portada del álbum muestra la idea principal detrás de cada canción, que habla de la vida y en qué se convierten las personas sin sueños. Nuestras acciones tarde o temprano tendrán consecuencias, pero habrá pocas personas que se responsabilicen de sus acciones. Más bien, el precio tendrá que pagarlo de nuevo un inocente. Pero mi sueño es precisamente el de los inocentes, los nobles y los valientes: levantarse, unirnos y ganar su independencia. Cuando todos los depredadores y sus víctimas vivan en paz, el mundo no tendrá fronteras. Este es el mensaje de la portada.
¿Por qué la canción Monster in the Mirror? ¿Qué hay detrás de esta canción, especialmente por el nombre que la describe?
Stela:
Fue por su nombre que decidimos que esta sería la primera impresión fuerte que provocaría a la audiencia a escuchar y ver el video, así como el álbum. Por eso elegimos esta canción como single para el álbum. Además, esta canción combina todos los aspectos de nuestro álbum: guitarras pesadas, orquestación poderosa, partes agresivas y dinámicas, que contrastan con momentos tiernos y románticos.
¿Habrá otro lanzamiento de algún video nuevo?
Stela:
Sí, pero todavía no puedo decir cuándo.
En estos tiempos de pandemia todavía, ¿desarrollo versus estancamiento o superación de sus propios límites?
Stela:
No permitimos que la pandemia cambiara de ninguna manera nuestra actitud y nuestro deseo de hacer la música que amamos. Acepto cada problema u obstáculo como una nueva oportunidad.
¿En qué se diferencia Metalwings de otras bandas de este género de metal sinfónico?
Stela:
No tienes que ser diferente. Lo importante es ser sincero contigo mismo y eso es suficiente para ser único. Somos así. Tenemos nuestro propio estilo, sonido y belleza de nuestra música. Pero esto, por supuesto, será escuchado y apreciado solo por aquellos que escuchan música con el corazón.
¿Crees que actualmente hay un problema con la industria de la música o la pandemia lo acentuó? ¿Cuánto echas de menos los conciertos?
Stela:
Definitivamente creo que hay un problema en la industria de la música y es que el arte de calidad ya no se valora y promueve, sino visual y atractivo. Aparentemente, hay un problema cuando los miembros antiguos de bandas famosas se van, y otros incluso se separan. Existe una industria, pero no está diseñada para ayudar a los artistas, está hecha para permitir que otra persona se beneficie de ella. Y sí, la pandemia ha dejado al descubierto estos problemas, porque resulta que la mayoría de las bandas sobreviven solo de gira, cuando pueden vender mercadería. El precio de ser famoso en la mayoría de los casos es perder tu libertad como artista y estar constantemente de gira para poder sobrevivir. Elegimos no ser tan populares, pero sí libres. Sí, nos perdemos los conciertos, pero eso pasará. A diferencia de las bandas que tienen sellos detrás, lo hacemos todo por nosotros mismos y creemos que tarde o temprano la industria cambiará y más artistas independientes como nosotros subiremos al gran escenario y obtendremos la atención que se merecen. Las bandas independientes merecen popularidad no menos que las que se imponen en todas partes.
¿Alguna transmisión en vivo en una red social más tarde para seguir difundiendo tu nuevo álbum?
Stela:
Hasta ahora no hemos considerado este tipo de opciones, porque no es fácil organizar un evento de este tipo, pero la idea es genial y en algún momento podemos hacer streaming en directo.

Stela:
