With the band's entry in February 2020, the Mexican Melodic Metal band Kälad, have been rapidly gaining position within the national and international scene. Led by Julieta Ruiseco and Mario Dorantes, the band also released their first single "Sail Away" when the pandemic was present in the world and later recently released their next single "Inner tide". The band has managed to be within the ranking of Mexican Metal favorites! Congratulations!
Now I have the opportunity to know a little about them! With this interview for Darkzen Dragon Metal Angels! Thank you very much!
Hi friends! How have you been! I hope that very good! Tell me how was your training? What inspired you to make a band within this musical style?
Kälad:
Thank you very much for this interview, we are very happy to be here. Regarding your question, I think that each one could give you a more personal answer of the reason why we decided to dedicate ourselves to music, as well as to be part of KÄLAD; however, I believe that if there is one reason we all converge, it is that we love what we do. It is well known that the music industry is a very complicated career and even so, I don’t see any of the members of KÄLAD giving up the dream of forming a project that lives up to what we envision achieving. The greatest inspiration we have is actually that: a great love for what we do, which curiously motivates us to want to do things well.
What are your musical influences from all of you?
Kälad:
We have super varied tastes, none of us actually listen to the same thing as the other, it's very rare, because everyone would think that we listen to the same musical style and that was the reason why we decided to do a Symphonic metal project; however, I think that this was our strength at the beginning since we always seek to compose in pursuit of KÄLAD and not in pursuit of our personal musical tastes and that greatly enriches the compositions.
What is the band's own musical style? Their Metal is modern, harmonic, heavy and melodic with guttural and clean voices.
Kälad:
We have been fortunate to be able to evolve the sound of the band in a very short time, for now I can tell you that our sound is aimed at a much more modern metal, with a more contemporary style compared to the classic symphonic metal that we know and just that. It has led us to experiment harmonically, as well as with voices and gutturals. Each song has its charm and shows a different facet of what KÄLAD stands for as a whole.
What does the name of the band mean?
Kälad:
KÄLAD means Pisces or fish in Estonian. The origin of the band took place in 2020 when Mario and I (Julieta) met and wanted to create a new project, we both share the same zodiac sign which is Pisces and it was made for us, well, Mario, because he was the one who actually the name was given to the band, something symbolically perfect to remember the origin and the story of how this adventure began. And curiously, Alex (bass player) is also a Pisces and although Gus is a Cancer, he is also a water sign, which perfectly complements all the themes that are always present in our compositions and music, which is: the sea and the water..
What was your vocal training Julieta? You have an excellent vocal range!
Julieta:
WOOO! Thank you very much J I began my studies at the Escuela Superior de Música de Bellas Artes as a classical singer, from there I went to Canada to continue my studies, but now in contemporary singing and jazz with the Mtra. Kate Hammett – Vaughan and on my return from Canada a few years ago, I have dedicated myself to continue my studies in singing courses and classes. I learn a lot from each teacher and I still feel that I still have a long way to go to become the singer I want to be.
What are your hobbies?
Julieta:
I can't have hobbies, hahahaha! Thanks to life, everything at this point in my life is composing, singing, keeping an eye on the band's social networks, reviewing reviews, interviews, news, creating content, taking singing lessons, giving singing lessons, and yes. spare some time, then go for a walk. I miss those days when I used to draw, for example, but I would not change this reality that we are living in for anything in the world, where I can see a job almost entirely dedicated to music and to seeing KÄLAD as a company.
Do you only have this project or any other musical collaboration?
Kälad:
I (Julieta) collaborate with many musicians and in many projects, I am fortunate that they invite me to sing here and there. I have a Youtube channel where I upload some covers, but I'm not very active. Both Mario and Alex have alternative projects to KÄLAD in which they perform in a different way, also excellent quality bands of which we are fans like Mighty Thor in Mario's case and Alex's Healing Harm. Gus is an audio engineer at his own studio called Calavera Soundlabs and he spends all day there doing musical nonsense hahahaha and also, like me, he has a YouTube channel called Gus Calavera where he does some incredible metal covers, they have to check it out
Julieta, do you have a favorite singer? I saw the Floor Jansen challenge and several talented singers participated like you!
Julieta:
Yes, many of us got on the train, hahaha. Damn… difficult question, I have worked on countless projects and musical styles, therefore, I am a believer that the path I have managed to trace has been in part thanks to the musical openness that I have to carry out my work, therefore My influences range from classic metal singers like Floor Jansen or Elise Ryd, to great exponents of contemporary jazz like Melody Gardot or Cecile McLorin Salvant.
Your training is very recent, tell me how it happened during these strong phases of quarantine in the country? How did they rehearse?
Kälad:
It's forbidden to talk about it, hahahaha. Just kidding. We were born in the pandemic, just the day the quarantine was declared in México. At that time it was just Mario and I and we did not plan to have any soon presentation due to the same pandemic, so at that time we simply dedicated ourselves to composing, building our social networks, and recording, since it was the only thing we could do. Life has been very kind to us, because just when we were on our way to integrate more members, the right people arrived and now, we can get together and compose or plan more surprises.
For the production of their current single “Inner Tide” as it was created, lyrics and for the video! With excellent sound, style and photography.
Kälad:
Thank you very much! Inner Tide is a composition by Gus, our talented guitarist, he came up with this magnificent idea, to which Mario gave head and tail to synthesize Gus's madness and finally Juliet with melody and lyrics.
We recorded the video long before recording the song, that's just how things flowed and it was quite an odyssey. Everything was self-produced and self-managed, which makes us value more the result and the love that everyone has given us with their congratulations. The culprit of the photography was the great Alex Gaar, director of the video, who with his excellent eye and talent managed to perfectly capture the idea that we had to represent in this video.
Are you already thinking of working on an album?
Kälad:
Yes, we will surprise you this year with the release of our first LP, although we cannot give you dates yet.
Any new songs or EPs in Spanish?
Kälad:
We don't plan to do it; however, we never close to the idea.
Any other single on the way? Do you have any intention of doing a live event on a social network or an event already live nearby?
Kälad:
The album is coming! At the moment we're on the Inner Tide media tour, but as soon as it's over, we'd love to do a live on our social media for a more intimate approach with our audience. We have some surprises at the door.
What do you say to your fans? In Mexico and the world
Kälad:
Simply THANK YOU, it is super beautiful to see that there are people who dare to lend their ears and their hearts to a new project and for us that is a gift that makes everything worth much more.

Con la entrada de la banda en febrero de 2020, la banda Mexicana de Metal Melódico Kälad, han ido ganando rápidamente posición dentro de la escena nacional e internacional. Liderada por Julieta Ruiseco y Mario Dorantes, Además la banda lanzó su primer sencillo “Sail Away” cuando la pandemia hacia presencia en el mundo y posteriormente hace poco lanzando su siguiente sencillo “Inner tide”. La banda ha logrado estar dentro del ranking de favoritos del Metal Mexicano! Felicidades!

¡Hola amigos! ¡Cómo han estado! ¡Espero que muy bien! ¿Cuéntenme cómo fue su formación? ¿Qué los inspiro hacer una banda dentro de este estilo musical?
Kälad:
Muchísimas gracias por esta entrevista, estamos muy contentos de estar aquí. Con respecto a tu pregunta, creo que cada uno podría darte una respuesta mas personal del motivo por el cual decidimos tanto dedicarnos a la música, como ser parte de KÄLAD; sin embargo, creo que si hay una razón en la que todos convergemos que es que amamos lo que hacemos. Es muy sabido que la industria musical es una carrera por demás complicada y aún así, yo no veo a ninguno de los integrantes de KÄLAD desistiendo del sueño de formar un proyecto a la altura de lo que visionamos lograr. La más grande inspiración que tenemos es en realidad esa: un gran amor por lo que hacemos lo cual nos motiva, curiosamente, a querer hacer bien las cosas.
¿Cuáles son sus influencias musicales de todos ustedes?
Kälad:
Tenemos gustos súper variados, ninguno en realidad escucha lo mismo que el otro, es rarísimo, pues todo mundo pensaría que escuchamos el mismo estilo musical y esa fue la razón por la cual decidimos hacer un proyecto de Symphonic metal; sin embargo, creo que esa fue nuestra fortaleza en un principio ya que, buscamos siempre componer en pos de KÄLAD y no en pos de nuestros gustos musicales personales y eso enriquece muchísimo las composiciones.
¿Cuál es el estilo musical propio de la banda? Su Metal es moderno, armónico, pesado y melódico con voces del estilo gutural y limpio
Kälad:
Hemos sido afortunados de poder evolucionar el sonido de la banda en muy poco tiempo, por el momento te puedo decir que nuestro sonido va encaminado a un metal mucho mas moderno, con un estilo más contemporáneo en comparación al clásico metal sinfónico que conocemos y justamente eso nos ha llevado a experimentar tanto armónicamente, como con las voces y guturales. Cada canción tiene su encanto y muestra una faceta diferente de lo que representa KÄLAD en su totalidad.
¿Qué significa el nombre de la banda?
Kälad:
KÄLAD significa Piscis o peces en estonio. El origen de la banda tuvo lugar en el 2020 cuando Mario y yo (Julieta) nos conocimos y quisimos crear un nuevo proyecto, ambos compartimos el mismo signo zodiacal que es Piscis y se nos hizo, bueno, a Mario, porque fue él el que en realidad se puso el nombre a la banda, algo simbólicamente perfecto para remembrar el origen y la historia de como comenzó esta aventura. Y curiosamente Alex (bajista) también es piscis y aunque Gus es cáncer, también es un signo de agua, lo cual complementa a la perfección toda la temática que siempre esta presente en nuestras composiciones y la música, que es: el mar y el agua.
¿Cuál fue tu formación vocal Julieta? ¡Tienes excelente registro vocal!
Julieta:
WOOO! Muchas gracias J Yo comencé mis estudios en el Escuela Superior de Música de Bellas Artes como cantante clásica, de ahí me fui a Canadá a continuar mis estudios, pero ahora en canto contemporáneo y jazz con la Mtra. Kate Hammett – Vaughan y a mi regreso de Canadá hace unos años, me he dedicado a continuar mis estudios en cursos y clases de canto. De cada maestro aprendo muchísimo y todavía siento que me hace falta recorrer camino para llegar a ser la cantante que quiero ser.
¿Cuáles son tus pasatiempos?
Julieta:
No puedo tener pasatiempos, ¡jajajaja! Gracias a la vida, todo en este momento de mi vida es componer, cantar, estar al pendiente de las redes sociales de la banda, revisando las reseñas, entrevistas, noticias, crear contenido, tomar clases de canto, dar clases de canto y si sobra algún tiempecito, pues salir a pasear un rato. Extraño esos días en los que me ponía a dibujar, por ejemplo, pero no cambio por nada del mundo esta realidad que estamos viviendo en donde puedo ver un trabajo casi en su totalidad dedicado a la música y a ver a KÄLAD como una empresa.
¿Solo tienen este proyecto o alguna otra colaboración musical?
Kälad:
Yo (Julieta) colaboro con muchos músicos y en muchos proyectos, tengo la fortuna de que me invitan a cantar por aquí y por allá. Tengo un canal de Youtube donde subo algunos covers, pero no estoy muy activa. Tanto Mario como Alex tiene proyectos alternos a KÄLAD en los cuales se desempeñan de manera distinta, bandas también de excelente calidad de las cuales somos fans como Mighty Thor en el caso de Mario y Healing Harm de Alex. Gus es ingeniero en audio de su propio estudio llamado Calavera Soundlabs y se la pasa todo el día ahí haciendo locuras musicales jajajaja y también, al igual que yo, tiene un canal de Youtube llamado Gus Calavera donde hace unos covers increíbles de metal, tienen que checarlo.
Julieta, tienes alguna cantante favorita? ¡Vi lo del reto de Floor Jansen y varias cantantes talentosas participaron como tú!
Julieta:
Sííí, muchas nos subimos al tren, jajaja. Rayos… pregunta difícil, he trabajado en un sinnúmero de proyectos y de estilos musicales, por lo tanto, soy creyente de que el camino que he logrado trazar ha sido en parte gracias a la apertura musical que tengo para realizar mi trabajo, por lo tanto, mis influencias van desde las clásicas cantantes de metal como Floor Jansen o Elise Ryd, como hasta grandes exponentes en el jazz contemporáneo como Melody Gardot o Cecile McLorin Salvant.
¿Su formación es muy reciente, cuénteme como pasaron durante estas fases fuertes de cuarentena en el país? ¿Cómo fue que ensayaban?
Kälad:
Está prohibido hablar de eso, jajajaja. Es broma. Nosotros nacimos en la pandemia, justo el día que se declaró la cuarentena en México. En ese entonces solo éramos Mario y yo y no pensábamos tener ninguna presentación pronta por la misma pandemia, entonces en ese momento simplemente nos dedicamos a componer, cimentar nuestras redes sociales, y grabar, pues era lo único que podíamos hacer. La vida ha sido muy bondadosa con nosotros, puesto que justo cuando nos encaminamos a integrar a más miembros, llegaron las personas correctas y ahora, ya podemos reunirnos y componer o planear más sorpresas.
¡Para la producción de su actual sencillo “Inner Tide” como fue creación, letra y para el video! Con un excelente sonido, estilo y fotografía.
Kälad:
¡Muchas gracias! Inner Tide es una composición de Gus, nuestro talentoso guitarrista, él llego con esta magnífica idea, a la cual Mario le dio pies y cabeza para sintetizar las locuras de Gus y finalmente Julieta con melodía y letra.
El video lo grabamos mucho antes de grabar la canción, simplemente así fluyeron las cosas y fue toda una odisea. Todo fue auto producido y auto gestionado, lo cual hace que valoremos mas el resultado y el amor que todos nos han dado con sus felicitaciones. El culpable de la fotografía fue el gran Alex Gaar, director del video, quien con su excelente ojo y talento logro plasmar perfectamente la idea que teníamos que representar en este video.
¿Tienen pensado ya en trabajar en un álbum?
Kälad:
Sí, los sorprenderemos este año con la salida de nuestro primer disco LP, aunque todavía no podemos darles fechas.
¿Alguna nueva canción o EP en español?
Kälad:
No tenemos pensado hacerlo; sin embargo, nunca nos cerramos a la idea.
¿Algún otro sencillo en puerta? ¿Tienen alguna intención de hacer algún en vivo por alguna red social o algún evento ya en vivo cerca?
Kälad:
¡Se viene el disco! Por el momento estamos en la gira de medios de promoción de Inner Tide, pero en cuanto acabe, nos encantará hacer un en vivo en nuestras redes sociales para tener un acercamiento más intimo con nuestro publico. Tenemos algunas sorpresas en puerta.
¿Qué les dicen a sus fans? En México y el mundo
Kälad:
Simplemente GRACIAS, es súper bello ver que hay gente que se anima a prestarle sus oídos y su corazón a un proyecto nuevo y para nosotros eso es un regalo que hace que todo valga muchísimo mas.
