Theatres des Vampires is an Italian gothic metal band with strong symphonic orchestra influences, mostly noted for the predominant theme of vampirism within their lyrics.

 

The name "Theatres des Vampires" was inspired by a fictional location created by Gothic fantasy writer Anne Rice of the same name. Rice's Theatres des Vampires is a Parisian theatre in which vampires pretend to be mortal actors, their performances consisting of the feeding on mortals disguised as part of a play and staged in front of human audiences. The location is mentioned in several of Rice's books, including Interview With the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat.

How are you?

 

Thank you for your interview Jose Roberto. We are really happy for the release of our new album Candyland  and we are ready for some new great shows in 2017 . we are planning our next gigs in these days .

 

Sonya is more bloody and aggressive in this new álbum?

​

Not at all. There is a kind of balance between some songs with a powerfull and aggressive sound and the others, more gothic indeed.  I think my most aggressive part is coming out more strongly in this album, I must say that I really enjoyed it because this is also part of my character, my personality. But we have not left out the more melodic side and more gothic where the songs are melancholy and interpreted with my goth style like Candyland , Pierrot lunaire, autumn leaves or the gothic rock song Resurrection Mary.

You are commonly defined as "Vampiric Metal", ¿Sonya is a vampire in mind? and soul?

​

We are 100% vampires! This is our attitude and our way of life. In my lyrics I like to tell dark and damned stories , not only on the topic of vampirism. the dark side of the world and the human mind is a territory so rich of images, art, nightmares and new stories to tell.

my soul is black as pitch and this is my (under)world, I always write what I feel , what I am and about what I like.

 

Darkzen: WOW! That is beautiful! Me too my friend!

 

Do you have any author, writer or favorite book on this theme? As influences in your compositions?

 

 I have liked a lot Anne Rice of course, but not all her works, I loved the Vampire chronicles, the first 3 books, the others also are nice but they are not at ther same level.I loved “ the Vampire” by william Polidori,Sheridan Le Fanu’s tale “Carmilla”, Goethe’s tale “ bride of corinth and so may others. But  I love also writers with a dark souls, it is not necessary talking always about vampires. My other favorite writers are Poe, Christina Rossetti, Emily dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Kerouak,  Coleridge, Wilde, Baudelaire, Kerouak , Bukowski, James Frey and more..  They obiouvsly influence me all the time, I love licterature and I love books.Books are my main inspiration.

 

Darkzen: You're Interesting Sonya! And that says a lot about your knowledge within this topic

 

 

Tell us a little more about the lyrical for this album! the Asylum Pennhurst ¿Because you chose this place?

 

I have always had a particular interest for interesting and scary stories, about mysterious and abandoned places and about human madness and diseases. Some years ago I saw a documentary about  a place that Ialready knew before for itsa sad story  , that story was unbelievable, the story of Pennhurst  asylum and I was shocked once again to listen to that real  story. At that precise moment I decided the album title and  the mood of the whole album.. i decided to give back the voice to all people that suffers for their mental problems..that are closed in their own words...in their mind..forever lost.

In details the name of the new album is inspired by a Pennhurst room, different from all others, with colored walls and bars on the windows. A room described as hell on earth by the inpatients of that  infamous t asylum, where for decades adults and children with severe mental problems where hidden away from the public eye.  
A sad but alas true story, and the patients themselves renamed that room - with its brightly colored walls from which nobody could leave - Candyland.

Candyland is a journey through the corridors of the asylum, through the dread of those who - locked away inside the bulwarks of Pennhurst -  were left to live in the lone company of their deepest and most harrowing fears, told through their words, accompanied by their cry of desperation. 

Never to be understood. Never to be free. Never to be truly alive. 

It was surely my strongest inspiration for this album but it was not the only one.

 

Where did you get the sources to research the story more deeply?

 

The Pennhurst State School and Hospital was opened in 1908 and closed its infamous doors  in 1987 after years of chronic overcrowding and patient abuse. Pennhurst began as an institution to care for the "feeble minded." For years, it operated under appalling conditions, and no one noticed.

​

Back in the mid 1960s, fledgling TV reporter Bill Baldini ran a five-episode exposé of Pennhurst State School and Hospital on Philadelphia’s TV10 (now an NBC affiliate). It painted a picture of neglect and abuse in the Chester County institution that was hard for the regular viewers to stomach. On the monochrome televisions of the time came images of full-grown hands and feet bound by straps to adult-sized crib beds. Inmates of the institution were shown rocking, pacing, and twitching. Many were severely disabled either mentally or physically, but others were quite lucid and coherent—but withdrawn into themselves because of over-stimulation of the senses in the loud and sometimes frightening place, and a lack of much-needed mental stimulation. The five-minute news segments were entitled “Suffer the Little Children.” When one patient was asked by the interviewer what he would like most in the world, if he could have anything he wanted, the sad and withdrawn reply was simply, “TO GET OUR FROM PENNHURST!”

Bill Baldini, interviewed doctors and patients and exposed the conditions, but could not finish the final segment. He collapsed under sheer exhaustion and was unable to complete his final report. Badini's 1968 documentary led to cases presented in the Supreme Court about conditions at Pennhurst State School and Hospital and allowed the nation to see the way the residents at Pennhurst lived -- these people had broken spirits, they were unloved, uncared for, and their constitutional rights were denied them.

 

The Candyland álbum is Goth Metal, Symphonic Metal with Electronic Elements or is a big combination?

 

Candyland is hell on earth and represents  our fears..candyland has no filters, it’s direct, a smash on your face  but you can still feel an  underlying deep melancholy under a massive and violent structure .. it’s really powerfull and violent in some songs but never without loosing our TDV attitude...in others it is full of orchestral  sounds ..it’s really a travel inside our fears..

Our producer Christian Ice and me, together with the band, worked hard everyday on Candyland after our split with Fabian, who decided to leave the band to follow his private interest and private life still keeping a strong friendship with us. So we started from a different point of view, no more from the keyboards atmosphere but from my lyrics, arranging on them and on the rythm of my words the whole album. So, what came out was a really strong sound, with great guitar’s riffs , surely different from the previous works cause our attitude was not the same of some years ago , Candyland is a mix of lot of things, of different states of mind, it combines both electronic elements with symphonic ones without losing our style.

 

 

To you, ¿What does mean the new álbum? And these good songs like "Resurrection Mary", "Candyland", well all of them!

 

Resurrection Mary  is inspired by a real gosth story of Chicago area. Since the 1930s, several men driving northeast along archer avenue between the Willowbrook Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery have reported picking up a young female hitchhiker. This young woman is dressed somewhat formally in a white party dress and is said to have light blond hair and blue eyes. she wears a thin shawl, dancing shoes, carries a small clutch purse. When the driver nears the Resurrection Cemetery, the young woman asks to be let out, whereupon she disappears into the cemetery.Back to our song , resurrection Mary song start  with the description of her dead bodies that Lies on a side of a desert road.. And goes back to her story, her desperate run to escape from death..And her ghost that still run in the wood, dancing with the Autumn leaves..

Candyland instead represent the whole meaning of the album...Candyland is that terrible And coloured room seen with the eyes of a child locked inside it. A child that remember when her mother left her in that horrible place , that saw all other children die around her.. With the doctors all around ...And the horrible experiments they did on that poor people. She saw that place becoming smaller And smaller cause she is growing up.. The song starts with a well known child song And represents the chant of the children that Are buried in that asylum for ever.

 

¿Wich are the favourites song for you of ‘Candyland’? 

 

It’s really hard to say, I love all of them , they are my creatures, a part of my soul. I can say I love candyland because it was my main inspiration and I  love Pierrot lunaire fot its deep meaning..it represents the conflict inside a pierrot soul.He try to Make people smile But his eternal sadness make  people scared of him..always leaving him alone. He try To Make them smile painting a smile on his pale face dipping fingers in his blood... Ripping his heart from his chest..a brutal image, a smile Made of blood..And obviously people do not understand him..  pierrot lunaire personifies the solitude, all those people considered different from the most, the ones that are outise this society, the forgotten, the invisibles.

Anyway , I really do not have a favorite song .

 

 

¿The new album is continuous? The new album tell us a story? or each song is very different from the main theme of the album?

 

Candyland is not a concept album , it is so just in its half. Candyland is a journey inside human fears... we all have something that scares us ....that we cannot fight because, at the end,  it is part of us...something linked with our child fears, it is our dark half that screams...and sometimes we cannot control it...and we have to walk outside..in the dark side of the world, outside this society....every song has it’s own story, its own obsession....I go from human fears to literature, the dark side of literature such as  the Masque of the red death of E.A.Poe (seventh room), to Coleridge. “Opium shades” is my homage to Coleridge...I lost in his opium delirium while he was writing his Kubla Khan..

 

 

"Seventh Room" is a great song! tell us more about this song! including on the participation of Fernando Ribeiro! ¿How was the colaboration with him?

 

I 've always loved Moonspell , they are a great band. Fernando has a great And particular voice and he is an amazing frontman . i thought our 2 bands walked on the same way without ever meeting , it was the right time to do it And to cross these two bands.  Fernando is really a kind person and a real professionist. When i asked him about a special Guest on our new album he was happy about this new collaboration, as all the great artist he loves to share and to try new thing with music, and he did an excellent job. It’s a great honour and pleasure having his voice on our last work.  About the song, it is ispired by the Masque of the red death of E.A.Poe.

 

 

Anything else you'd like to share my friend?

 

 We really hope to come back to Mexico and to other latinoamerica countries  in 2017 with our new album Candyland , so..crossed fingers and wait for us!

El nombre de "Theaters des Vampires" se inspiró en un lugar ficticio creado por la escritora de fantasía gótica Anne Rice. Theatre of the Vampires de Rice es un teatro parisino en el que los vampiros pretenden ser actores mortales,

Sus actuaciones consistentes en alimentar a los mortales disfrazados como parte de una obra de teatro y actuar frente a las Audiencias de humanos. La localización se menciona en varios de los libros de Rice, incluyendo Entrevista con el Vampiro y el Vampiro Lestat.

¿Cómo estás?

 

Gracias por la entrevista José Roberto. Estamos muy contentos por el lanzamiento de nuestro nuevo álbum Candyland y estamos listos para algunos nuevos grandes shows en 2017. Estamos planeando nuestros próximos conciertos en estos días.

 

 ¿Sonya es más sangrienta y agresiva en este nuevo álbum?

 

No del todo. Hay una especie de equilibrio entre algunas canciones con un sonido potente y agresivo y las otras, más góticas de hecho. Creo que mi parte más agresiva está saliendo con más fuerza en este álbum, debo decir que lo disfruté mucho porque esto también es parte de mi personaje, mi personalidad. Pero no hemos dejado fuera el lado más melódico y más gótico donde las canciones son melancólicas e interpretadas con mi estilo gótico como Candyland, Pierrot lunaire, hojas de otoño o la canción de rock gótico Resurrection Mary.

 

Ustedes es comúnmente definidos como "Vampiric Metal", ¿Sonya es un vampiro en la mente? ¿Y alma?

 

¡Somos 100% vampiros! Esta es nuestra actitud y nuestro modo de vida. En mis letras me gusta contar historias oscuras y malditas, no sólo sobre el tema del vampirismo. El lado oscuro del mundo y la mente humana es un territorio tan rico de imágenes, de arte, de pesadillas y de nuevas historias que contar.

 

Mi alma es negra como el tono y este es mi mundo (bajo), siempre escribo lo que siento, lo que soy y lo que me gusta.

¿Tiene algún autor, escritor o libro favorito sobre este tema? ¿Cómo influencias en tus composiciones?

 

Me ha gustado mucho Anne Rice, por supuesto, pero no todas sus obras, me encantaron las crónicas de vampiros, los primeros 3 libros, los otros también son agradables, pero no están en el mismo nivel. Me encantó "el vampiro" por william Polidori , El cuento de Sheridan Le Fanu "Carmilla", el cuento de Goethe "novia de corinto y así pueden otros. Pero también amo a los escritores con almas oscuras, no es necesario hablar siempre de vampiros. Mis otros escritores favoritos son Poe, Christina Rossetti, Emily dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Kerouak, Coleridge, Wilde, Baudelaire, Kerouak, Bukowski, James Frey y más. Obviamente me influyen todo el tiempo, amo la literatura y amo los libros. Los libros son mi principal inspiración.

 

Darkzen: Eres Interesante Sonya! Y eso dice mucho de tu conocimiento dentro de este tema

 

Cuéntanos un poco más sobre la lírica para este álbum! El Asilo Pennhurst ¿Porque elegiste este lugar?

 

Siempre he tenido un interés particular por historias interesantes y aterradoras, sobre lugares misteriosos y abandonados y sobre la locura y las enfermedades humanas. Hace unos años vi un documental sobre un lugar que ya conocía antes por su triste historia, aquella historia era increíble, la historia del asilo de Pennhurst y me sorprendió una vez más escuchar esa verdadera historia. En ese preciso momento decidí el título del álbum y el estado de ánimo de todo el álbum .. He decidido devolver la voz a todas las personas que sufre por sus problemas mentales .. Que se cierran en sus propias palabras... en su mente. .Perdido para siempre.

 

En detalles, el nombre del nuevo álbum está inspirado en una sala Pennhurst, diferente de todas las demás, con paredes y barras de colores en las ventanas. Un cuarto descrito como el infierno en la tierra por los pacientes hospitalizados de ese asilo infame, donde por décadas los adultos y los niños con problemas mentales severos ocultaron lejos del ojo público.

 

Una historia triste, pero desgraciadamente verdadera, y los pacientes mismos cambiaron el nombre de esa habitación - con sus paredes de colores brillantes de la que nadie podía salir - Candyland.

 

Candyland es un viaje por los pasillos del asilo, a través del temor de aquellos que - encerrados dentro de los baluartes de Pennhurst - se dejaron vivir en la solitaria compañía de sus temores más profundos y más desgarradores, contados a través de sus palabras, acompañados por sus Grito de desesperación.

 

Nunca hay que entenderlo. Nunca ser libre. Nunca estar verdaderamente vivo.

Seguramente fue mi mayor inspiración para este álbum, pero no fue el único.

 

¿De dónde sacaste las fuentes para investigar la historia más profundamente?

 

La escuela y el hospital del estado de Pennhurst fueron abiertos en 1908 y cerró sus puertas infames en 1987 después de años del hacinamiento crónico y del abuso del paciente. Pennhurst comenzó como una institución para cuidar a los "débil mente". Durante años, operó bajo condiciones espantosas, y nadie se dio cuenta.

 

 

A mediados de los años sesenta, Bill Baldini, reportero de TV en ciernes, dirigió una exposición de cinco episodios de Pennhurst State School y Hospital en la TV10 de Filadelfia (ahora afiliada a la NBC). Pintó una imagen de negligencia y abuso en la institución del condado de Chester que era difícil para los espectadores regulares de estómago. En las televisiones monocromas de la época surgían imágenes de manos y pies aderezados por correas a camas de cunas de tamaño adulto. A los reclusos de la institución se les enseñó el balanceo, el ritmo y el temblor. Muchos estaban gravemente discapacitados mentalmente o físicamente, pero otros eran bastante lúcidos y coherentes, pero se retraían en sí mismos debido a la excesiva estimulación de los sentidos en el lugar fuerte ya veces aterrador y la falta de estimulación mental muy necesaria. Los segmentos de noticias de cinco minutos se titulaban "Sufren a los Niños Pequeños". Cuando un entrevistado preguntaba al paciente qué le gustaría más en el mundo, si pudiera tener algo que quisiera, la triste y retraída respuesta era simplemente " ¡CONSIGA NUESTRO DE PENNHURST! "

Bill Baldini, entrevistó a médicos y pacientes y expuso las condiciones, pero no pudo terminar el segmento final. Se derrumbó bajo puro agotamiento y no pudo completar su informe final. El documental de 1968 de Badini condujo a los casos presentados en la corte suprema sobre condiciones en la escuela y el hospital del estado de Pennhurst y permitió a la nación ver la manera que vivieron los residentes en Pennhurst - estas personas habían roto espíritus, no amadas, desatendidas, Les fueron denegados los derechos.

 

¿El álbum de Candyland es metal gótico, metal sinfónico con los elementos electrónicos o es una combinación grande?

 

Candyland es el infierno en la tierra y representa nuestros miedos ... Candyland no tiene filtros, es directo, un golpe en la cara, pero todavía se puede sentir una profunda profunda melancolía bajo una estructura masiva y violenta .. es realmente poderoso y violento en algunas canciones pero Nunca sin perder nuestra actitud TDV ... en otros está lleno de sonidos orquestales .. es realmente un viaje dentro de nuestros miedos ..

Nuestro productor Christian Ice y yo, junto con la banda, trabajamos duro todos los días en Candyland después de nuestra separación con Fabian, que decidió dejar a la banda para seguir su interés privado y la vida privada sigue manteniendo una fuerte amistad con nosotros. Así que empezamos desde un punto de vista diferente, no más de la atmósfera de los teclados, sino de mis letras, arreglándolas y en el ritmo de mis palabras todo el álbum. Por lo tanto, lo que salió fue un sonido muy fuerte, con riffs de gran guitarra, sin duda diferente de las obras anteriores porque nuestra actitud no era la misma de hace algunos años, Candyland es una mezcla de muchas cosas, de diferentes estados de ánimo, que Combina elementos electrónicos con sinfónicos sin perder nuestro estilo.

 

 

Para ti, ¿Qué significa el nuevo álbum? Y estas buenas canciones como "Resurrection Mary", "Candyland", bien todas ellas!

 

Resurrection Mary se inspira en una verdadera historia del barrio de Chicago. Desde los años 30, varios hombres que conducen al nordeste a lo largo de la avenida del arquero entre el salón de baile de Willowbrook y el cementerio de la resurrección han divulgado el recoger de una hitchhiker femenina joven. Esta joven mujer está vestida formalmente en un vestido de fiesta blanco y se dice que tiene el pelo rubio claro y ojos azules. Ella lleva un chal delgado, zapatos de baile, lleva un monedero de embrague pequeño. Cuando la conductora se acerca al Cementerio de la Resurrección, la joven le pide que la deje salir, con lo cual ella desaparece en el cementerio. Tras nuestra canción, la resurrección María comienza con la descripción de sus cuerpos muertos que Miente en un lado de un camino desierto. Y vuelve a su historia, su carrera desesperada para escapar de la muerte ... Y su fantasma que todavía corre en el bosque, bailando con las hojas de otoño ..

Candyland en su lugar representan todo el significado del álbum ... Candyland es esa habitación terrible y color visto con los ojos de un niño encerrado dentro de él. Un niño que recuerda cuando su madre la dejó en ese horrible lugar, que vio a todos los otros niños morir a su alrededor .. Con los médicos por todos lados ... Y los horribles experimentos que hicieron en esa pobre gente. Ella vio que ese lugar se hacía más pequeño Y más pequeño porque ella está creciendo .. La canción comienza con una canción de niño bien conocido Y representa el canto de los niños que están enterrados en ese asilo para siempre.

 

¿Cuáles son las canciones favoritas para usted de 'Candyland'?

 

Es realmente difícil de decir, las amo a todas, son mis criaturas, una parte de mi alma. Puedo decir que me encanta candyland porque era mi inspiración principal y me encanta Pierrot lunaire por su profundo significado .. que representa el conflicto dentro de un pierrot soul. He tratar de hacer sonreír a la gente pero su eterna tristeza hacer que la gente le asusta .. siempre Dejándolo solo. Trata de hacer sonreír pintando una sonrisa en su pálida cara sumergiendo los dedos en su sangre ... Rasgando su corazón de su pecho ... una imagen brutal, una sonrisa hecha de sangre ... y obviamente la gente no lo entiende .. pierrot Lunaire personifica la soledad, todas aquellas personas consideradas diferentes de las más, las que son outise esta sociedad, lo olvidado, lo invisible.

De todos modos, realmente no tengo una canción favorita.

 

¿El nuevo álbum es continuo? ¿El nuevo álbum nos cuenta una historia? O cada canción es muy diferente del tema principal del álbum?

 

Candyland no es un álbum conceptual, es tan sólo en su mitad. Candyland es un viaje dentro de los miedos humanos... todos tenemos algo que nos asusta ... que no podemos pelear porque al final, es parte de nosotros ... algo relacionado con nuestros miedos infantiles, es nuestro oscuro Mitad que grita ... ya veces no podemos controlarlo ... y tenemos que caminar afuera ... en el lado oscuro del mundo, fuera de esta sociedad ... cada canción tiene su propia historia, su propia obsesión .. .. Voy de los miedos humanos a literatura, el lado oscuro de literatura como la Mascara de la Muerte Roja de EAPoe (séptima habitación), a Coleridge. "Opium shades" es mi homenaje a Coleridge ... Perdí en su delirio de opio mientras escribía su Kubla Khan ..

 

"Séptima habitación" es una gran canción! ¡Cuéntanos más sobre esta canción! Incluyendo la participación de Fernando Ribeiro! ¿Cómo fue la colaboración con él?

 

Siempre he amado Moonspell, son una gran banda. Fernando tiene una gran voz y particular y es un líder increíble. Pensé que nuestras dos bandas caminaban de la misma manera sin reunirse nunca, era el momento adecuado para hacerlo Y cruzar estas dos bandas. Fernando es realmente una persona amable y un verdadero profesional. Cuando le pregunté acerca de un invitado especial en nuestro nuevo álbum estaba contento con esta nueva colaboración, ya que todo el gran artista que le encanta compartir y probar algo nuevo con la música, e hizo un excelente trabajo. Es un gran honor y placer tener su voz en nuestro último trabajo. Sobre la canción, es inspirada por la Máscara de la muerte roja de E.A.Poe.

 

¿Algo más que te gustaría compartir mi amiga?

 

Esperamos realmente regresar a México y a otros países latinoamericanos en 2017 con nuestro nuevo álbum Candyland, ¡pongan los dedos cruzados y esperen por nosotros!
