KOSM is a progressive metal band hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada. Combining influences from Mastodon, Tool and Gojira; their sound is dynamic and unquestionably lethal. Since their induction in 2016, they have been making their mark in Vancouver’s metal scene as an absolute force to be reckoned with.

 

How are you friends! Nice to meet you and have this opportunity with you

 

The progressive alternative metal KOSM band, ¿What are your musical influences?

 

KOSM:

 

Our top three influences for this band are Mastodon, Gojira and Tool - consider them our unholy trinity. Individually, one of my (Jessie) biggest influences is the band The Agonist, specifically their first three albums (Once Only Imagined, Lullabies for a Dormant Mind & Prisoners). Alissa White-Gluz has been a huge inspiration and was the reason I started screaming. For Erik (Guitarist), aside from Mastodon, 'A Perfect Circle' is a large inspiration for his song writing, specifically Billy Howardel. Mike's (Guitarist) big influence is Adam Dutkiewicz, but 'Killswitch Engage' in general is a big one for him. Pastrami (Bassist) really is heavily influenced by Adam Swan of 'Monuments'. When it comes to drums, Sterling (Drummer) is inspired by Danny Carey of 'Tool', but also Matt Gartska of 'Animals as Leaders'. We are all over the map!

 

Because progressive metal and because the name of the band?

 

KOSM:

 

Progressive metal allows us to experiment with sounds outside of the 'typical' metal genres. It can be liberating to know that we are restricted to any sort of rules when it comes to our sound. As for the band name, Erik and I are huge fans of the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne. We had been going through the boss/ lore names of both series of games and ended up liking the name Kosm. Kosm is a god-like being in the lore of Bloodborne, though the name is only ever mentioned once. We figured the name fit well with our sound and overall branding!

 

What can you tell us about your new debut album “Cosmonaut”? How was the production and the creation of all the lyrics of the songs?

 

KOSM:

 

Our debut album is a concept album inspired by the lore of H.P. Lovecraft about our protagonist 'The Cosmonaut' transcending through time and space to reach an ultimate state of being. She goes through many trials and tribulations to reach such a state and each track represents the linear timeline of her journey. 

 

Most of the songs were pre-written by Erik and Mike from a previous project that had gone their separate ways, so most of the lyrics and arrangements were already set to go. It wasn't until about half way through recording and production that I started to fill in the blanks with songs that were being written along the way. The concept was all Erik's idea, so he gave me an outline of what each track was about and I wrote my lyrics based on that outline.

 

Our guitarist Mike is a professional studio engineer and we were very fortunate to have access to a studio for some of the album. All of the drums were recorded in the studio, but guitars were mostly recorded in Mike or Sterling's (drummer) bedroom, while vocals were recorded in our jam space at Greenhouse Studios. Basically, this whole album was very 'do it yourself' and independent, which we are very proud of.

 

What mean to you the single "Ancient Heart"? You chose this song for the video

 

KOSM:

 

We chose the single 'Ancient Heart' because we found it to be the easiest to follow and most structured for most listeners, as well as a song that has one of the catchiest hooks on the album. The music video concept was devised by myself and we were lucky enough to have our friend Lee Tebb do the videography for us! The concept of the video ties in with the concept of the song itself, in which someone (The Cosmonaut) finds an ancient tome that allows her to communicate with the elder being 'Yog-Sothoth'. When she finds this tome, cultists of the elder god surround her. As she becomes more and more enlightened, she also loses more and more of her sanity, as you can see that decent throughout the video.

 

Jessie tell us why progressive metal and what made you join the band Kosm?

 

Jessie:

 

When KOSM first started, it was simply Mike and Erik recording things in a living room. It wasn't until they decided they wanted to make it a full band that I was asked to join. All of us have very similar tastes in music and are close friends, so I figured it was a good idea! I then asked Sterling (drummer) to join us after he had reached out to me asking if we wanted to start a project - he has been the driving force behind us and our success ever since. Then we found Pastrami(bassist) through craigslist and when he jammed with us for the first time, it was like he'd been friends with us for a long time. Everything sort of came together and we have been writing songs and having a blast doing it ever since!

 

Jessie in addition to progressive metal that other musical influences do you have?

 

Jessie:

 

I have already mentioned Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy/ ex-The Agonist, but Brittany Slayes from 'Unleash the Archers' and Tatiana Shmaylyuk from 'Jinjer' are also huge inspirations to me. Lately, I have also been finding a lot of inspiration from the band 'Spiritbox', who are from Victoria, BC and have previous members from 'Iwrestledabearonce'. Their music has been absolutely addicting and I have been listening to their EP on repeat for almost a month - it's totally unhealthy but in the best way. Lastly, Joe Duplantier of Gojira has become a huge influence vocally - being able to scream on pitch is difficult! Otherwise, I grew up listening to Janis Joplin, The Tragically Hip and all of the classics, so they have definitely had an inspiration on me as well. However, I couldn't really talk about inspirations without mentioning my original huge inspiration, which is Amy Lee from 'Evanescence'. From 2004 to 2011, she as my idol!

 

How do you train your voice Jessie?

 

I don't, which is terrible. I learned how to scream through YouTube and mixing that with 'The Zen of Screaming'. I've only ever taken a handful of vocal lessons and did choir in high school, but that's about it. Everything else I have learned through trial and error as well as YouTube videos. I have thought about getting vocal lessons and am currently looking into a teacher that works best for me. Otherwise, I 'train' my voice by practicing covers of songs that push my boundaries bit by bit.

 

Why not have a duet with some other singer? With who would you like to have that opportunity and why?

 

KOSM:

 

Oh man, I have thought about this so many times! I would love to do a duet with Alissa White-Gluz, which kind of goes without saying. But I would also love to do a duet with Tatiana from Jinjer, Jesse Leech from Killswitch Engage, Joe Duplantier of Gojira, Troy Sanders from Mastodon, Corey Taylor from Slipknot - just everyone! The list goes on!

 

Do you have in mind some tour in your country?

 

KOSM:

 

We are hoping to do a Western Canadian tour come the beginning of next fall, but we are also planning to do a couple of festivals this summer! Stay tuned for more information on that, as it's only in the beginning stages.

 

Any advance for the next year?

 

KOSM:

 

We are really concentrating on the release as well as to keep the momentum of that going with videos and shows going into the new year, but we are always writing, that never stops!

Nothing, aside from saying that our debut album 'Cosmonaut' comes out on November 16, 2018!

Desde su inducción en 2016, han dejado su marca en la escena metalera de Vancouver como una fuerza absoluta a tener en cuenta.

La progresiva banda de metal alternativo KOSM, ¿Cuáles son sus influencias musicales?

 

KOSM:

 

Nuestras tres principales influencias para esta banda son Mastodon, Gojira y Tool; considéralas nuestra trinidad profana. Individualmente, una de mis mayores influencias (Jessie) es la banda The Agonist, específicamente sus primeros tres álbumes (Once Only Imagined, Lullabies for a Dormant Mind & Prisoners). Alissa White-Gluz ha sido una gran inspiración y fue la razón por la que comencé a gritar. Para Erik (guitarrista), además de Mastodon, 'A Perfect Circle' es una gran inspiración para su composición de canciones, específicamente Billy Howardel. Kosm es un ser divino en la historia de Bloodborne, aunque el nombre solo se menciona una vez. ¡Pensamos que el nombre encajaba bien con nuestro sonido y marca en general!

 

¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre su nuevo álbum debut, "El Cosmonauta"? ¿Cómo fue la producción y la creación de todas las letras de las canciones?

 

KOSM:

 

Nuestro álbum debut es un álbum conceptual inspirado en la historia de H.P. Lovecraft sobre nuestro protagonista 'The Cosmonaut' que trasciende a través del tiempo y el espacio para alcanzar un estado máximo de ser. Ella pasa por muchas pruebas y tribulaciones para alcanzar ese estado y cada pista representa la línea de tiempo lineal de su viaje.

 

La mayoría de las canciones fueron escritas previamente por Erik y Mike de un proyecto anterior que había ido por caminos separados, por lo que la mayoría de las letras y los arreglos ya estaban listos. No fue sino hasta la mitad de la grabación y la producción que comencé a llenar los espacios en blanco con las canciones que se estaban escribiendo en el camino. El concepto fue toda idea de Erik, así que me dio un resumen de lo que era cada tema y escribí mis letras basadas en ese resumen.

 

Nuestro guitarrista Mike es un ingeniero de estudio profesional y tuvimos la suerte de tener acceso a un estudio para algunos de los álbumes. Todos los tambores se grabaron en el estudio, pero las guitarras se grabaron principalmente en el dormitorio de Mike o Sterling (baterista), mientras que las voces se grabaron en nuestro espacio de jam en Greenhouse Studios. Básicamente, todo este álbum fue muy 'hazlo tú mismo' e independiente, de lo que estamos muy orgullosos.

 

¿Qué significa para ustedes el sencillo " Ancient Heart "? Ustedes eligieron esta canción para el vídeo

 

KOSM:

 

Elegimos el single 'Ancient Heart' porque nos pareció que era el más fácil de seguir y más estructurado para la mayoría de los oyentes, así como una canción que tiene uno de los ganchos más atractivos del álbum. El concepto de video musical fue ideado por mí mismo y tuvimos la suerte de que nuestro amigo Lee Tebb hiciera la videografía por nosotros. El concepto del video se relaciona con el concepto de la canción en sí misma, en la que alguien (The Cosmonaut) encuentra un antiguo tomo que le permite comunicarse con el anciano como 'Yog-Sothoth'. Cuando encuentra este tomo, los cultistas del dios mayor la rodean. A medida que ella se vuelve más y más iluminada, también pierde más y más su cordura, como se puede ver en todo el video.

 

Jessie dinos por qué el metal progresivo y qué te hizo unirte a la banda Kosm?

 

Jessie:

 

Cuando KOSM comenzó, eran simplemente Mike y Erik grabando cosas en una sala de estar. No fue hasta que decidieron que querían formar una banda completa a la que me pidieron que me uniera. Todos tenemos gustos similares en música y somos amigos cercanos, ¡así que pensé que era una buena idea! Luego le pedí a Sterling (baterista) que se uniera a nosotros después de que él se acercó a mí y me preguntó si queríamos comenzar un proyecto; ha sido la fuerza impulsora detrás de nosotros y nuestro éxito desde entonces. Luego encontramos Pastrami (bajista) a través de craigslist y cuando nos tocó por primera vez, fue como si hubiera sido amigo de nosotros durante mucho tiempo. ¡Todo se juntó y desde entonces hemos estado escribiendo canciones y pasándolo genial!

Ya mencioné a Alissa White-Gluz de Arch Enemy / ex-The Agonist, pero Brittany Slayes de 'Unleash the Archers' y Tatiana Shmaylyuk de 'Jinjer' también son una gran inspiración para mí. Últimamente, también he encontrado mucha inspiración en la banda 'Spiritbox', que son de Victoria, BC y tienen miembros anteriores de 'Iwrestledabearonce'. Pero también me encantaría hacer un dúo con Tatiana de Jinjer, Jesse Leech de Killswitch Engage, Joe Duplantier de Gojira, Troy Sanders de Mastodon, Corey Taylor de Slipknot, ¡simplemente todos! ¡La lista continua!

 

¿Tienen en mente algún tour en su país?

 

KOSM:

 

Esperamos hacer una gira por el oeste de Canadá a principios del próximo otoño, ¡pero también planeamos hacer un par de festivales este verano! Manténgase atento a más información sobre eso, ya que solo está en las etapas iniciales.
