Marloes Voskuil (Bass & Vocals) with a powerful voice which not only their music is great, in the Thrash Metal, also with a challenging attitude! and also very beautiful! Angel of Thrash!

 

Izegrim is a Thrash metal band from the east of the Netherlands. They have done gigs with bands as multitude numerous Destruction and gigs at festivals Have Done like the Metal Female Voices Fest.

 

I am very happy to have had this opportunity to hear from Marloes, and his band which is synonymous of power!

How are you my freind?

 

Hi, I’m fine thank you and thanks for your interest in Izegrim!

 

Marloes Izegrim who is? Brutal, Strong or Dark? or all together?

 

I’m just a normal girl who likes metal.

 

Marloes who is before and after a concert? outside and inside of a scenario?

 

Before a concert I’m very exited to play the show and can’t wait to get on stage. After the show I love to meet our fans so I’m always in the venue almost right after the show. I’m always in for a little chat, a picture or signature.

 

Who inspired you to play so powerful?

 

I grew up with Iron Maiden, Queen, Pantera, Kreator, Guns ‘n Roses and stuff like that. The energy those bands gave me, made me decide to try to do something more than just listen to the music. So I guess that’s where it all started.

 

Which has been the most brutal song or album you've done?

 

Our album “Congress of the Insane” is the most brutal album.

And the song “Celebratory Gunfire” is my fave song of that album. It gives me so much energy on stage. Especially when you see people sing along with the lyrics.

 

Congress Of The Insane, has been for me one of the heaviest albums of the previous three albums, so I put your album as one of the best of 2013! What was the attitude for the record this album and what was your goal?

 

Thanks ! Mission accomplished I guess, haha. While we are still very proud of our previous album, we all knew the new one had to reflect the rawness that we expose when performing the songs live. From the moment Bart and Jeroen wrote the first guitar-riff, we aimed for a non-polished sound, brutal, heavier and more “in-your-face” compared to the previous albums. These songs just screamed for a new approach and a different sound. Slow passages are now really slow and gloomy, and the aggressive, faster songs are absolutely kicking serious ass. Actually, our own live-performances were the main inspiration; one could say that all our fans we met over the years are the main inspiration for this album.We tried to capture the energy we get on stage, that adrenaline-rush when the audience goes bezerk. Sure, we have our favorite bands too; Bart finds his inspiration in Cannibal Corpse, Carcass and Nevermore (to name just a few), and Jeroen tends to listen more to the deathmetal genre like Asphyx and Entombed. A cool mix of bands that Bart and Jeroen blend into their own compositions.

 

How long did it take and what was the atmosphere like in the studio in the recording?

 

We returned to the Soundlodge Studio in Germany again. We’ve recorded our previous album there, and it was absolutely clear from the beginning that we would return to the same studio. Relaxed atmosphere, superb sound-engineer (Jörg Uken). He exactly nailed the sound we were aiming at. A brilliant mix of a raw yet defined sound, that grabs you by the balls. We stayed there for 2 weeks in a row. Next to the recording-studio there is a neat appartement where we stayed. We recorded drums, all the rythmguitars and vocals at the Soundlodge. Jeroen recorded my bass and Bart’s solo’s at home in his own studio. Jörg mixed and mastered all the tracks and created our new masterpiece. Worked like a charm.

 

Explain to me the concept behind Congress Of The Insane. Is this record more political or is this more about the insanity of people in the world? what do you think of this world in this moments?

 

No, we’ve never been a band that preached political opinions. But you are correct, there is a main theme on this album.  It’s not a real concept where we tell a story from A to Z, but it features the general thought based on the evil in the deceiving human nature. Everyone seems normal, until you get to know them. There are so many freaks amongst us, one cannot open a newspaper or watch the latest news on television, without being confronted with gruesome acts of crime. Think of all those high-school shootings, people like Breivik, just to mention two completely different examples. Some shit is seriously horrible and one has to be really sick to even think about those crimes we see on the daily news. What disturbs and fascinates me the most is the fact, that most of these people (for instance Breivik) could be your neighbour. Apparently you cannot trust anyone these days. The whole world seems a gathering of freaks, turning todays society into a global, worldwide ‘Congress of the Insane’ and we are all part of it. The cover expresses the feeling and atmosphere of those old carnivals and travelling parties where they had all these freaks exposed. Fitted perfectly to the whole theme.

 

What was it like working with Holy Moses, Sabina Classen in this album? She has been known as one of the very first women to ever use a death growl! you are amazing womans!

 

Sabina has always been high on my wishlist to cooperate with, like you stated; she is a legend. In the past we had some gigs with Holy Moses, so we already knew Sabina for a while. They got added to the roster of our agency (D-19) a couple of years ago. All it took was one email to Sabina and she immediately was very thrilled to cooperate on the our new cd. We sended her the song I had in mind to do the duet. They (Holy Moses) have their own studio in Frankfurt. I’ve spended a day with them in their studio when Sabina did her part of the vocals. It was a great day and I had a splended time with the band. It was interesting to see that see has a totally different approach on how she uses her voice. I’ve tried to sing like her, but we soon came to the conclusion that my technique is that different from her, that I’d better stick to my own technique. All in all it really is a great honor to have one of the leading ladies in thrash on our record ! I’m sure the fans of the oldschool genre will certainly be very thrilled about this song.

 

What do you think of females being represented in the scene? or do you think that some labels are merely of that them expressing?

 

Some labels love to advertise with the stigma “female fronted”. I don’t get it. Why do they have to mention it anyway. Extra selling points? Is it better or worse because it’s female fronted? I’m not into that. I play in a metalband, that’s all what counts. Why do they have to make the distinction between male/female. Do what you like, it’s not a contest.

 

 

Out of all the shows/tours you have done, what do you think has been the best experience and what has been the worst experience? your shows that such you have now?

 

Well, we never have bad experiences. We always try to make the best of every situation, even if they are far from perfect. One could sit in a corner and start whining and complaining, but it’s not our nature to behave childish. Good experiences: well well well, a lot ! First of all our gigs @ the 70000 tons of metal cruise and our time in Miami. This was something we could only dream of and then our dream came true!!! Our most recent European tour with Onslaught and Cripper was a blast, we met so many new friends.  Also the gigs in Eastern Europe are always superb, Devilstone Festival in Lithuania for example. People went absolutely crazy. We got treated like real rockstars and the response from the audience was overwhelming. Every gig should be a good experience, that’s our credo ! We are a live-band, we want to meet our fans. We are not the typical band that stays backstage all the time. Good chance that you see us all in the middle of the audience, looking at the other bands when we play at a festival.

 

Which bands Marloes listen while resting?

 

Too many to mention but to name a few: Carcass, Machine Head, Exodus, Kreator, Queen.

Marloes Voskuil (Bajista & Vocalista) con una voz potente el cual no solo su música es genial, dentro del Thrash Metal, también con una actitud retadora! y también muy hermosa! Angel del Thrash!

 

Izegrim es una banda de Thrash metal desde el este de los Países Bajos. Lo han hecho numerosos conciertos con bandas como La destrucción y han realizado conciertos en directo en festivales como el Metal Female Voices Fest.

 

Estoy muy contento por haber tenido esta oportunidad de saber de Marloes, y su banda el cual es sinónimo de poder!

 

Vamos con la entrevista!

 

Hola mi amiga, gracias por esta oportunidad. Como estas?

 

Estoy muy bien, gracias por el interés en Izegrim!

 

Quien es Marloes Izegrim? Es brutal, dark o poderosa?

 

Soy una chica normal a la que le gusta el metal!

 

Como es Marloes antes y después de un concierto?

 

Antes de un concierto me emociono mucho, estoy impaciente por subir al escenario. Después del show me gusta conocer a los fans, casi siempre me quedo en el lugar.

Siempre estoy para una pequeña charla, una foto o un autógrafo.

 

Quien te inspiró para tocar con tanta fuerza y poder?

 

Crecí escuchando Iron Maiden, Queen, Pantera, Kreator y Gun's and roses. La energía que recibí de ellas fue lo que me hizo decidirme a hacer algo más, que solo escuchar música.

Así fue como empezó todo.

 

Cuál ha sido el álbum y la canción más brutal que hayas hecho?

 

Nuestro álbum más brutal es "Congress of the insane" y mi canción favorita de ese mismo, es "Celebratory gunfire". Me da mucha energía en el escenario.

Especialmente cuando escuchas a la gente cantando tu canción.

 

Para mí, ‘Congress of the insane’ ha sido su álbum más pesado, a comparación con los tres álbumes anteriores. Cual fue el concepto para este álbum? Puse Tu álbum como uno de los mejores de 2013! ¿Cuál fue la actitud para este álbum y cual era su objetivo?

 

Gracias! Misión cumplida, supongo. Aun nos llenan de orgullo nuestros álbumes pasados.

En ese momento, todos sabíamos que era necesario reflejar toda esa crudeza que mostramos en el escenario al tocar en vivo.

Desde que Bart y Jeroen escribieron el primer riff de guitarra, supimos que nos dirigíamos hacia lo más brutal, mucho más pesado de lo que habíamos hecho antes.

Esas canciones tenían un enfoque y un sonido muy diferente. Antes lento y ahora más rápido y agresivo. De hecho, nuestras presentaciones en vivo fueron la inspiración principal, así también como los fanáticos que hemos conocido con el paso del tiempo.

Tratamos de capturar la energía que tenemos en el escenario, esa adrenalina. Cada miembro de la banda tiene sus bandas favoritas y eso ayudo bastante.

Bart encuentra su propia inspiración en Cannibal corpse, Carcass y Nevermore (por mencionar a una cuantas) y Jeroen suele escuchar más Death metal, como Asphyx y Entumbed.

Es una combinación de bandas que Bart y Jeroen mezclan en sus propias composiciones.

 

Cuanto tiempo llevó grabarlo? Cuál era la atmósfera en el estudio?

 

Regresamos al estudio Soundlodge en Alemania. Habíamos grabado los álbumes pasados ahí, así que fue fácil volver a grabar en él.

La atmosfera fue muy relajada, tuvimos un súper ingeniero de sonido (Jorg Uken), el logró el sonido que esperábamos. Fueron dos semanas de grabar en el estudio, ahí quedo la batería, los vocales y la guitarra.

Jeroen grabó en bajo y el solo de Bart en su casa, en su propio estudio.

Jorg hizo la mezcla y la masterizacion de todas las pistas. Así fue como nació nuestra obra maestra.

 

Explícame el concepto de Congress of the insane. Se trata de política? o es más sobre la locura que hay en la gente alrededor del mundo?

 

Nosotros nunca hemos sido una banda que hable de política, pero estas en lo correcto, hay un tema principal en el álbum.

No contamos una historia de la A a la Z, pero si tenemos pensamientos basados en la maldad del ser humano. Todos parecen normales, hasta que los conoces a fondo.

Hay tantos locos entre nosotros, no puedes abrir un periódico o ver las noticias sin enfrentarte a horribles actos criminales.

Piensa en todos esos tiroteos en escuelas, gente como en Breivik. Hay tanta mierda en este mundo, que uno tiene que estar realmente enfermo como para pensar hacer esas cosas de las que te enteras diariamente.

Lo que más me fascina y me perturba a la vez, es el hecho de que la mayoría de esa gente (como en Breivik) podría ser tu vecino.

Aparentemente no puedes confiar en nadie en estos días, el mundo parece una reunión de locos, esto se ha convertido en algo global. Congress of the insane significa eso y todos formamos parte de ello.

La portada expresa el sentimiento y la atmosfera de esos viejos carnavales en los que mostraban fenómenos. Encajó perfecto con el tema del disco.

 

Como fue trabajar con Holy Moses y Sabina Vassen en este álbum?

 

Sabina siempre ha estado en mi lista de gente con la que siempre quise trabajar. Ella es una leyenda! en el pasado tuvimos algunas giras con Holy Moses, así que ya conocíamos a Sabina.

Ellos se integraron a nuestra agencia (D-19) hace un par de años y solo nos tomó un e-mail para que Sabina aceptara participar en nuestro CD.

Le enviamos la canción que pretendía hacer en un dueto. Ellos tienen su propio estudio en Frankfurt y recuerdo que pasé un día entero con ellos, mientras Sabina grababa su parte de los vocales.

Fue un día increíble, pasé tiempo con la banda y fue interesante ver como ella tiene un enfoque distinto a la manera en que usa su voz.

Traté de cantar como ella, pero no tardé en darme cuenta de que mi técnica es muy distinta, Que debía usar la propia.

Es un gran honor contar con una de las mujeres más importantes del género thrash. Estoy segura de que los fanáticos de la vieja escuela del género se emocionarán con esta canción.

 

Que piensas sobre las etiquetas que tienen las mujeres en el género?

 

Algunas marcas gustan de advertir poniendo "mujer al frente", no lo entiendo. por qué tienen que mencionarlo? Acaso hay puntos extra por eso? Es mejor o peor si si hay una mujer al frente de la banda?.

Toco en una banda de metal, eso es todo lo que cuenta. No entiendo por qué tienen que hacer distinción entre mujer/hombre.

Hagan lo que quieran! esta no es una competencia!.

 

De todos los shows en los que se han presentado, cual piensas que ha sido su mejor y su peor experiencia?

 

Bueno, considero que no hemos tenido malas experiencias.  Siempre tratamos de hacer y de dar lo mejor, incluso si la situación está lejos de ser perfecta.

Es fácil sentarse en una esquina y quejarse, pero esa no es nuestra naturaleza, no nos gusta actuar como niños.

Buenas experiencias: Han sido muchas, por ejemplo la gira de 70000 tons of metal y el tiempo que pasamos en Miami. Eso fue algo que solo en sueños lo imaginábamos y de pronto se volvió realidad.

También nuestro más reciente tour por Europa con Onslaught y Cripper, fue femonemal y conocimos a tanta gente nueva.

También las giras a Europa del este siempre son excelentes. Como por ejemplo el festival Devilstone en Lituania. La gente enloqueció Nos trataron como verdaderos rockstars y la respuesta de la audiencia fue abrumadora.

Cada gira debe ser una buena experiencia, ese es nuestro credo. Nosotros somos una banda que disfruta de presentarse en vivo y queremos conocer a nuestros fans.

No somos la típica banda que se le pasa tras bastidores. Incluso pueden encontrarnos entre la audiencia, disfrutando de ver a otra bandas en el festival.
