Vocalist of Canadian Folk Metal Protokult band and also recorders, keyboards and traditional instruments, with musical influences such as: Slavic traditional singing & various folk music, Opeth, Liv Kristine (ex Theater of Tragedy, Leaves Eyes), Type O Negative, Hagalaz Runedance, Tristania, among others!
On this occasion, I had the opportunity to interview Ekaterina, singer of the Folk Metal / Pagan Metal band, Protokult, from Canada! Thank you very much and welcome

Greetings! Thank you for having me!
Ekaterina! Tell us a little about yourself! Your musical influences? Do you have any hobbies?
Ekaterina
I am a traditional singer and multi-instrumentalist, born in Kazakhstan and of Russian descent. Currently, I reside in Toronto, Canada, and it is here that I’ve studied world music of various cultures and nations. These days I mostly perform folk music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans - I love to fuse traditional elements of these cultures with alternative and contemporary music genres, along with some Western classical and early music,
My hobbies include collecting instruments, traveling, organizing events, making costumes inspired by fantasy and folklore and... drinking beer!
How is the folk / pagan metal scene in Canadá? What does this musical style mean to you?

The scene had too much to drink and is taking time off ;P
Honestly, very little is happening with all these new regulations. Live performances are somewhat restricted and the events that do happen have limited capacity and are often seated (just imagine metal shows seated- tough for fans and musicians!)
Darkzen:
I imagine, it is not the same.
As for the meaning of the style, for me it always held an educational value - it is through folk metal that I’ve discovered my love for world/folk music. Of course, a lot of it is just plain comical drunken absurdity - which I find hilarious - but if you dig deeper there are plenty of references to history, forgotten traditions and languages. All of that inspires musicians to create something new based on something archaic.
Where did you get the idea for the name of the band? What does it mean?

We like to joke that it’s “Professional Toronto Kult!”
The name was made up by the creator of the band, Martin Drozd, and he explains it as a tribute to the underground scene. I guess it reflects this idea that all people have an inherent leaning towards something very “primitive” and desire to be a part of a tribe - a modern-day scene or a cult or a religious affiliation, etc. In a way we did create this tongue-in-cheek cult during our live events with props, beer maidens and whatnot.
Did all the band members know each other before the band was formed?
Ekaterina
The original members went to high school together; I joined in 2010.
Are you a full-time singer or do you have any other projects?
Ekaterina
Besides Protokult I’m part of Meden Glas and Blisk, which both feature traditional polyphonic singing from Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and beyond.
You have many more skills besides your voice! like recorders, keyboards, and traditional instruments! Do you have a favorite?
Ekaterina
Haha, yes! I collect instruments or friends gift them to me when they travel abroad.
My recent favourite is a small strummed dulcimer called Merlin. It’s a Canadian invention based on a diatonic mountain dulcimer. When I played it for the first time it reminded me of a dombra - a plucked lute from Kazakhstan. I haven’t used it in Protokult unfortunately, but often play it in my other ensembles.
Do you have a favorite singer, woman or man? And how do they inspire you?

I don’t have a number one favorite, because I do different techniques!
For folk style I’m inspired by numerous voices I hear in the field recordings. I could say the most outstanding voice belongs to Olga Sergeeva - she really brings out this tearful melancholy of “back home” for me.
When I was younger, Liv Kristine (ex Theatre of Tragedy) & Vibeke Stene (ex Tristania) have been a big inspiration. They brought a different vocal style and timbre into metal and pioneered that “Beauty and the Beast” style of gothic metal. Before taking serious voice lessons I’ve spent a great deal of time practicing to their recordings and numerous other gothic/symphonic metal singers.
But who really inspires me as an artist is Einar Selvik of Wardruna. I had the pleasure to attend his lecture and was just astonished by his work process! He has done so much research into the history of Norse culture, the language, the runes, etc. I love how he mentioned that he skipped all the “New-Age” pseudo-scientific information and went straight to the actual academic sources. And with this knowledge he was able to create something very unique and mystical, never claiming to have “recreated” Viking music (since we have no idea how it sounded in the first place!) Also, the attention to detail in each composition is astounding. For example, in the song about the rune for “Ice”, he featured a block of ice played as percussion. If the song deals with starvation then he’d fast or wouldn’t eat to bring out an emotional response and so on and so forth.

The detail with which you comment on it is totally amazing and with passion!
Tell us about your album “Transcending the Ruins”: under what influence, theme or background is the production and inspiration of the album's lyrics based?
Ekaterina
Well, the album has been created under the influence of numerous ales, stouts, and lagers, some fine Irish and Scottish hard liquors were in the mix as well!
In terms of lyrics, we once again take inspiration from history or folklore of our native cultures: we’ve got themes of human indulgence, suffering, love, friendship - all as ancient as any ruins, but, unlike them, these themes transcend material decay and stay relevant in today’s society.
Did you participate in writing any song for the album?
Ekaterina
This album less so than the one before it. The lead singer Martin writes the compositions, I usually add my own vocal or instrumental melodies. In terms of lyrics, I also either write my own or rearrange the provided lyrics to fit the vocal lines.
Do you have a favorite song from this album?
Ekaterina
I really like the last track “Dead New World”- it’s a journey!
It reflects the current crossroads of our culture. We are entering a new age where artificial intelligence might replace most of the workforce and might know more about your own feelings and thoughts before you even experience them. Truly terrifying and in a way exciting to think about!
Humans are slowly morphing with technology - you can’t even put your cellphone down for 5 minutes! This causes massive anxiety and for many people it is really hard to adapt. I guess some of us have this nostalgia for our “old world,” where we grew up not relying on social media for communication with each other. There was more human-to-human connection. However, our “old world” will perish and we along with it.

You are Right Ekaterina.
The cover of your album is interesting, what does it mean for you?
Ekaterina
A Rusalka is depicted on the cover. She is a water nymph in Slavic mythology - a spirit of a drowned girl. We wrote a song about her as well as featured a medley of traditional Russian and Ukrainian songs “Na Gryanoi Nadele” as an intro to the track. We’ve had the ladies of Blisk (my other ensemble) join us for a guest performance. It was believed that around late spring/early summer, Rusalky would come out of the rivers, lakes, and swamps in which they live and drown people, taking the bodies back with them to the watery depths.

We are not yet sure, but planning on it.
What do you say to your fans, Ekaterina - the fans of your band for an upcoming tour or for a live stream soon?

It is hard to plan anything with the pandemic; artists and the entertainment industry overall are one of the last to get back to the full swing of things. We are planning a show with a limited capacity in November in Toronto. - you can always send us a message for more details.

¡Ekaterina! ¡Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti! ¿Tus influencias musicales? ¿Tienes algún pasatiempo?
Ekaterina
Soy una cantante tradicional y multi instrumentista, nacida en Kazajstán y de ascendencia rusa. Actualmente resido en Toronto, Canadá, y es aquí donde he estudiado músicas del mundo de diversas culturas y naciones. En estos días toco principalmente música folclórica de Europa del Este y los Balcanes; me encanta fusionar elementos tradicionales de estas culturas con géneros musicales alternativos y contemporáneos, junto con algo de música clásica y antigua occidental,
Mis pasatiempos incluyen coleccionar instrumentos, viajar, organizar eventos, confeccionar disfraces inspirados en la fantasía y el folclore y ... ¡beber cerveza!
¿Cómo es la escena del folk / pagan metal en Canadá? ¿Qué significa este estilo musical para ti?

La escena tenía demasiado para beber y se toma un descanso ;P
Honestamente, está sucediendo muy poco con todas estas nuevas regulaciones. Las presentaciones en vivo están algo restringidas y los eventos que ocurren tienen una capacidad limitada y a menudo están sentados (imagínense los shows de metal sentados, ¡difícil para los fanáticos y los músicos!)

Si me imagino, no es lo mismo.
En cuanto al significado del estilo, para mí siempre tuvo un valor educativo: es a través del folk metal que descubrí mi amor por la música folk / mundial. Por supuesto, mucho de eso es simplemente un absurdo ebrio cómico, que me parece gracioso, pero si profundizas, hay muchas referencias a la historia, tradiciones e idiomas olvidados. Todo eso inspira a los músicos a crear algo nuevo basado en algo arcaico.
¿De dónde sacaron la idea del nombre de la banda? Qué significa eso?

Nos gusta bromear diciendo que es "Professional Toronto Kult!"
El nombre lo inventó el creador de la banda, Martin Drozd, y lo explica como un homenaje a la escena underground. Supongo que refleja esta idea de que todas las personas tienen una inclinación inherente hacia algo muy "primitivo" y el deseo de ser parte de una tribu: una escena moderna o un culto o una afiliación religiosa, etc. De alguna manera creamos este culto irónico durante nuestros eventos en vivo con accesorios, doncellas de cerveza y todo eso.
¿Se conocían todos los miembros de la banda antes de que se formara la banda?

Mi favorito reciente es un pequeño dulcimer rasgueado llamado Merlín. Es un invento canadiense basado en un dulcimer diatónico de montaña. Cuando lo toqué por primera vez, me recordó a un dombra, un laúd punteado de Kazajstán. Desafortunadamente no lo he usado en Protokult, pero a menudo lo toco en mis otros conjuntos.
¿Tienes un cantante, mujer u hombre favorito? ¿Y cómo te inspiran?

No tengo un número uno favorito, ¡porque hago diferentes técnicas!
En cuanto al estilo folk, me inspiran numerosas voces que escucho en las grabaciones de campo. Podría decir que la voz más destacada pertenece a Olga Sergeeva, ella realmente me saca a relucir esta melancolía llorosa de “volver a casa”.
Cuando era más joven, Liv Kristine (ex Theatre of Tragedy) y Vibeke Stene (ex Tristania) han sido una gran inspiración. Trajeron un estilo vocal y timbre diferente al metal y fueron pioneras en ese estilo de metal gótico de “La Bella y la Bestia”. Antes de tomar lecciones serias de canto, pasé mucho tiempo practicando con sus grabaciones y con muchos otros cantantes de metal gótico / sinfónico.
Pero quien realmente me inspira como artista es Einar Selvik de Wardruna. ¡Tuve el placer de asistir a su conferencia y quedé asombrada por su proceso de trabajo! He investigado mucho sobre la historia de la cultura nórdica, el idioma, las runas, etc. Me encanta cómo mencionó que se saltó toda la información pseudocientífica de la “Nueva Era” y fue directamente a las fuentes académicas reales. Y con este conocimiento fue capaz de crear algo muy único y místico, nunca pretendiendo haber "recreado" la música vikinga (¡ya que no tenemos idea de cómo sonaba en primer lugar!) Además, la atención al detalle en cada composición es asombrosa. . Por ejemplo, en la canción sobre la runa de "Ice", presentó un bloque de hielo tocado como percusión. Si la canción trata sobre la inanición, entonces él ayunaría o no comería para provocar una respuesta emocional y así sucesivamente.

Háblanos de tu álbum “Transcending the Ruins”: ¿bajo qué influencia, tema o trasfondo se basa la producción e inspiración de las letras del álbum?

Bueno, el álbum ha sido creado bajo la influencia de numerosas ales, stouts y lagers, ¡algunos excelentes licores fuertes irlandeses y escoceses también estaban en la mezcla!
En cuanto a las letras, una vez más nos inspiramos en la historia o el folclore de nuestras culturas nativas: tenemos temas de indulgencia humana, sufrimiento, amor, amistad, todos tan antiguos como las ruinas, pero, a diferencia de ellos, estos temas trascienden el material. decaer y seguir siendo relevante en la sociedad actual.
¿Participaste en escribir alguna canción para el álbum?

Este álbum menos que el anterior. El cantante principal Martin escribe las composiciones, yo suelo añadir mis propias melodías vocales o instrumentales. En cuanto a las letras, también escribo las mías o reorganizo las letras proporcionadas para que se ajusten a las líneas vocales.

Me gustó mucho la última canción, "Dead New World", ¡es un viaje!
Refleja la encrucijada actual de nuestra cultura. La portada de tu álbum es interesante, ¿Qué significa para ti?
Ekaterina
Una Rusalka está representada en la portada. Ella es una ninfa de agua en la mitología eslava, un espíritu de una niña ahogada. Escribimos una canción sobre ella y presentamos un popurrí de canciones tradicionales rusas y ucranianas “Na Gryanoi Nadele” como introducción a la pista. Hemos tenido a las damas de Blisk (mi otro conjunto) que se unieron a nosotros para una actuación invitada. Se creía que a fines de la primavera / principios del verano, Rusalky saldría de los ríos, lagos y pantanos en los que viven y ahogaría a las personas, llevándose los cuerpos con ellos a las profundidades del agua.
