Aqvilea is a female-fronted symphonic metal band based in Italy, recognizable for their cinematic compositions and their historical concept inspired by ancient Rome. Their debut album, released in 2020, has been produced by the pioneer of Götheburg style Fredrik Nordström (Dark Tranquillity, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames, Opeth and more): the 14 tracks LP, titled “Beyond the Elysian Fields”, it’s meant to be a manifesto of cinematic symphonic metal. The promise is to live an epic and unforgettable adventure through the pages of History: from the navigation towards the port of Alexandria of Egypt to the march through Mediolanum swamps, from the crossing of the inaccessible Alpine passes to the bloody and tragic battle of Aquae Sextiae… the Gods will guide this fatal journey!

How have you been?

Hi Darkzen and thank you very much for this interview, we are glad to be your guest! After all, we are doing fine, we busy enough both with our personal projects and with the band stuff, there are many new features in sight!
Tell us about Aqvilea. Which is the current formation of the band?
Aqvilea
The band went through several formation changes before arriving at the current lineup. Consider that we were not a group of friends who at some point decided to form a band: on the contrary, our relationship was born as an artistic collaboration on a common project and the friendship then came as a consequence. In any case, we have come to a point now where the band is solid and we are working very well together. Aqvilea members are: Cae Lys on voice, Pier Lando Baldinelli on bass and orchestras, Franz Lugnan on guitar and Simone Santacà on drums.
What does the name of the band mean?
Aqvilea
Aqvilea is a sort of Latin spelling of “Aquileia”, which is actually a major archaeologic site in North Italy and it was once one of the biggest cities of the Roman Empire. This name has a deep meaning for us, it represents a symbol of the coexistence between different peoples and different cultures through the centuries but also the universal beauty of classical culture, which is a heritage of all humanity.
What is the musical concept that you manage? It’s symphonic metal, but your costumes are impressive! And from the Classic Age if I'm not mistaken...

Yes, you’re right. And thanks a lot, we are very proud of our costumes because they are an integral part of our concept. Indeed, we can say that they are just a “visual summary” of our concept: they represent classical history, and to be precise Roman; cinema, in fact they are inspired by the Hollywood movies on ancient Rome (like Cleopatra or The gladiator); and the Opera, which is one of famous Italian traditions. The make-up instead is a tribute to some iconic bands in history of extreme metal, first of all Cradle of Filth.
We have recently received several film awards for our makeup and costumes and this is beautiful because it means that beyond our music, we are working with a great team of professionals, craftsmen, tailors, makeup artists, but above all friends and people who believe like us in our project. And surrounding yourself with people who believe in you and share your goals is always the best thing.
Musically, we started with the idea of "cinematic metal" and therefore with compositions that recall the soundtracks of cinema due to the use of the instruments and their structure. Our first album has certainly had more marked power influences, the second will be more melodic-death oriented. But basically we will always be a symphonic metal band and our music will always deal with classical history.
The latest video you released, A Day Before the Wolf from your album Beyond the Elysian Fields, is great! Did you released any other videos?
Aqvilea
Thank you very much! We are very satisfied with this video and we had a great response indeed. The use of cinematic photography and virtual production allowed us to reach the standard we needed. Of course this kind of productions with actors and virtual sceneries are also very complex to make and expensive, this is why we can’t have one for each song as we would... We realized another beautiful video, which was our first, for the song Aquae Sextiae, it was the video that launched Aqvilea and also the one that very much defined our visual style.
Your album has great production and elegant symphonic, rhythmic and melodic combinations! Tell us the story behind the production, lyrics, musical composition... Also the cover looks great!

Wow, we are really glad you appreciated ALL these aspects. Vocal lines are certainly the basis of our music, along with orchestral sounds that allow to crearte that cinematic dimension: Aqvilea “mark” is right in the harmony between these two elements. The aim of our compositions is to arouse emotions and involve the listener, convey a sense of “participation in beauty”. And it’s wonderful to reach people and have and have a confirmation that what you are doing has had exactly that result.
In this our music is inspired by various factors: certainly symphonic groups such as the first Nightwish and Xandria, but also by Hollywood soundtracks, as we said before, therefore the compositions of Hans Zimmer, or Two Steps from Hell, while lyrics are inspired by books, poems, movies, documentaries, places we visited… and so on. But first of all there are obviously human feelings, life itself - love, pain, dreams and the passions of which life is made.
Speaking of production, from the very beginning we looked for a great producer who could give Beyond the Elysian Fields a production to the standards of Northern European metal in terms of sound, mix and atmosphere. Fredrik was certainly the right person, we worked in great harmony and it was certainly an unforgettable experience that gave us a lot on a professional level but also on a human level.
Finally: the cover! It represents the winged victory, one of the most beautiful statues from Roman Age existing in the World, and other graphic details which refer to other elements of our concept, therefore classical, gothic elements, there is a sundial in the background that represents the time travel... it's all designed down to the smallest detail!
For Cae Lys! Your voice has a beautiful register, operatic and clean! Tell us about your vocal training.
Cae:
I’ve been singing for as long as I remember and decided to study classical voice and vocal pedagogy after high school. I grew up in Germany and the USA and moved to Switzerland to study at the Conservatoire de Lausanne. After that, I sang opera around Europe for a few years and had concerts all around the world. For the last 10 years, I have been working as a breathing and voice specialist, training singing teachers and working with Olympic athletes.
What are your most important musical influences?
Cae:
As opposed to what one might think, I am not an expert in metal music at all. As a matter of fact, I would say that my musical influences are the likes of Queen, Pink Floyd and Simon and Garfunkel, even though I thoroughly enjoy any kind of music.
Do you have a favorite vocalist?
Cae:
There are many singers I admire for their skills and ingenuity when it comes to sound and stamina. Freddy Mercury is definitely high up on the list, as well as Eva Cassidy and Lara Fabian.
Do you have a presentation planned soon? In your country.
Aqvilea
Yes! It’s not official yet but be’ll have a big live concert in Italy in early summer, in a beautiful historical framework and it will be a truly unique event of its kind. We will reveal all the details in forthcoming weeks.
Any surprise about any project of the second chapter of your saga? Some Advance!

The sophomore album it will have a sort of continuity with the first, from the temporal point of view: it will be set in the period from the end of the Roman republic to the beginning of the Empire, so it will refer to some of the most famous characters of ancient history such as Julius Caesar, Octavian , Cleopatra... Musically talking, it will be more oriented on melodic death metal sounds and it will be more powerful than ever!
The constant will be the production because in this case we will work with Fredrik again, since we consider him the 5th musician of the band and we can hardly imagine Aqvilea without him!

We don't have any online concerts scheduled this year but we plan to do something special so that everyone in the world can enjoy an Aqvilea live show. It's still a surprise and we'll start working on it shortly.
What are the plans of the band for this 2022?
Aqvilea
The main goals for this year is to complete at least the pre-production of the new album and to release the first single excerpt from it. Moreover, as mentioned before, at least a big live show and then few surprises we can’t reveal yet.

Cuéntanos sobre Aqvilea. ¿Cuál es la formación actual de la banda?

La banda pasó por varios cambios de formación antes de llegar a la formación actual. Piensa que no éramos un grupo de amigos que en algún momento decidimos formar una banda: al contrario, nuestra relación nació como una colaboración artística en un proyecto común y la amistad vino como consecuencia. En cualquier caso, hemos llegado a un punto en el que la banda es sólida y estamos trabajando muy bien juntos. Los miembros de Aqvilea son: Cae Lys a la voz, Pier Lando Baldinelli al bajo y orquestas, Franz Lugnan a la guitarra y Simone Santacà a la batería.
¿Qué significa el nombre de la banda?

Aqvilea es una especie de ortografía latina de "Aquileia", que en realidad es un sitio arqueológico importante en el norte de Italia y una vez fue una de las ciudades más grandes del Imperio Romano. Este nombre tiene un profundo significado para nosotros, representa un símbolo de la convivencia entre diferentes pueblos y diferentes culturas a través de los siglos pero también la belleza universal de la cultura clásica, que es patrimonio de toda la humanidad.
¿Cuál es el concepto musical que manejan? Es metal sinfónico, ¡pero su vestuario es impresionante! Y de la Edad Clásica si no me equivoco...

Sí tienes razón. Y muchas gracias, estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros vestuarios porque son una parte integral de nuestro concepto. En efecto, podemos decir que son solo un “resumen visual” de nuestro concepto: representan la historia clásica, y para ser precisos romana; el cine, de hecho, se inspiran en las películas de Hollywood sobre la antigua Roma (como Cleopatra o El gladiador); y la Ópera, que es una de las famosas tradiciones italianas. El maquillaje, en cambio, es un tributo a algunas bandas icónicas en la historia del metal extremo, en primer lugar, Cradle of Filth.
Recientemente hemos recibido varios premios de cine por nuestro maquillaje y vestuario y esto es hermoso porque significa que más allá de nuestra música, estamos trabajando con un gran equipo de profesionales, artesanos, sastres, maquilladores, pero sobre todo amigos y gente que cree como nosotros en nuestro proyecto. Y rodearte de gente que crea en ti y comparta tus objetivos siempre es lo mejor.
Musicalmente partimos de la idea de "metal cinematográfico" y por tanto de composiciones que recuerdan a las bandas sonoras de cine por el uso de los instrumentos y su estructura. Nuestro primer disco ciertamente ha tenido influencias power más marcadas, el segundo estará más orientado al death melódico. Pero básicamente siempre seremos una banda de metal sinfónico y nuestra música siempre tratará con la historia clásica.
¡El último video que lanzaron, A Day Before the Wolf de su álbum Beyond the Elysian Fields, es genial! ¿Lanzaste algún otro video?

¡Muchos gracias! Estamos muy satisfechos con este video y tuvimos una gran respuesta. El uso de la fotografía cinematográfica y la producción virtual nos permitió alcanzar el estándar que necesitábamos. Por supuesto, este tipo de producciones con actores y escenarios virtuales también son muy complejas de hacer y costosas, es por eso que no podemos tener uno para cada canción como lo haríamos... Realizamos otro hermoso video, que fue nuestro primero, para la canción Aquae Sextiae, fue el video que lanzó Aqvilea y también el que definió mucho nuestro estilo visual.
¡Tú álbum tiene una gran producción y elegantes combinaciones sinfónicas, rítmicas y melódicas! Cuéntanos la historia detrás de la producción, letra, composición musical... ¡Además la portada se ve genial!

Wow, estamos muy contentos de que hayas apreciado TODOS estos aspectos. Las líneas vocales son sin duda la base de nuestra música, junto con los sonidos orquestales que permiten crear esa dimensión cinematográfica: Aqvilea “marca” está en la armonía entre estos dos elementos. El objetivo de nuestras composiciones es despertar emociones e involucrar al oyente, transmitir una sensación de “participación en la belleza”. Y es maravilloso llegar a la gente y tener una confirmación de que lo que estás haciendo ha tenido exactamente ese resultado.
En esto nuestra música se inspira en varios factores: ciertamente grupos sinfónicos como los primeros Nightwish y Xandria, pero también en las bandas sonoras de Hollywood, como decíamos antes, por tanto, las composiciones de Hans Zimmer, o Two Steps from Hell, mientras que las letras se inspiran en libros, poemas, películas, documentales, lugares que visitamos… etc. Pero ante todo están obviamente los sentimientos humanos, la vida misma: el amor, el dolor, los sueños y las pasiones de las que está hecha la vida.
Hablando de producción, desde el principio buscamos un gran productor que pudiera darle a Beyond the Elysian Fields una producción a la altura del metal del norte de Europa en términos de sonido, mezcla y atmósfera. Fredrik sin duda fue la persona indicada, trabajamos en gran sintonía y sin duda fue una experiencia inolvidable que nos aportó mucho a nivel profesional pero también a nivel humano.
Finalmente: ¡la portada! Representa la victoria alada, una de las estatuas de época romana más bellas que existen en el mundo, y otros detalles gráficos que hacen referencia a otros elementos de nuestro concepto, por lo tanto elementos clásicos, góticos, al fondo hay un reloj de sol que representa la hora. viajes... ¡todo está pensado hasta el más mínimo detalle!
¡Por Cae Lys! ¡Tu voz tiene un registro hermoso, operístico y limpio! Cuéntanos sobre tu entrenamiento vocal.
Cae:
He estado cantando desde que tengo memoria y decidí estudiar canto clásico y pedagogía vocal después de la secundaria. Crecí en Alemania y Estados Unidos y me mudé a Suiza para estudiar en el Conservatorio de Lausana. Después de eso, canté ópera por Europa durante algunos años y di conciertos por todo el mundo. Durante los últimos 10 años, he trabajado como especialista en respiración y voz, entrenando a profesores de canto y trabajando con atletas olímpicos.
¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales más importantes?
Cae:
Al contrario de lo que uno podría pensar, no soy un experto en música metal en absoluto. De hecho, diría que mis influencias musicales son Queen, Pink Floyd y Simon and Garfunkel, aunque disfruto mucho de cualquier tipo de música.
¿Tienes algún vocalista favorito?

Hay muchos cantantes que admiro por sus habilidades e ingenio cuando se trata de sonido y resistencia. Freddy Mercury definitivamente ocupa un lugar destacado en la lista, así como Eva Cassidy y Lara Fabian.

El segundo álbum tendrá una especie de continuidad con el primero, desde el punto de vista temporal: estará ambientado en el período que va desde el final de la república romana hasta el comienzo del Imperio, por lo que hará referencia a algunos de los personajes más famosos de la historia antigua como Julio César, Octavio, Cleopatra...
Musicalmente hablando, estará más orientado a sonidos de death metal melódico y ¡será más potente que nunca!
La constante será la producción porque en este caso volveremos a trabajar con Fredrik, ya que lo consideramos el 5º músico de la banda y ¡difícilmente podemos imaginar a Aqvilea sin él!
¿Algún evento en línea tal vez?

No tenemos ningún concierto en línea programado este año, pero planeamos hacer algo especial para que todos en el mundo puedan disfrutar de un espectáculo en vivo de Aqvilea. Todavía es una sorpresa y comenzaremos a trabajar en ello en breve.
¿Cuáles son los planes de la banda para este 2022?

Los principales objetivos para este año es completar al menos la preproducción del nuevo álbum y lanzar el primer extracto del sencillo. Además, como se mencionó anteriormente, al menos un gran show en vivo y luego algunas sorpresas que aún no podemos revelar.
