Since 2008, Edmonton-based Tessitura has been taunting the Western Canadian underground metal scene with their eclectic blend of melodic death metal, progressive music, and classic thrash. They meticulously craft their unique sound by layering the edge-of-your-seat, earth-shaking guitar work of Stephan Ceña, backing it up with Leillyn McColman’s uplifting bass lines and the driving drum patterns of Gord Alexander, and refining the sound with the dual-vocal freight train of Ceña and lead vocalist Cyn Mercredi’s powerful screams and haunting growls.

Leaving behind the more technical borderline progressive style found on the first two albums, ‘Battle to Eternity’ (2010) and ‘Savage Embrace’(2013), they embrace their grittier side with ‘Unearth the Underworld’ (2018). The unmatched energy they inject into their fans can be experienced at one of their thunderous live shows or on any of their releases

Hi band, how are you! thank you very much for having the time for this interview!

Cyn Mercredi, you are adrenaline! because Thrash metal and Death Metal?

I find metal, in general, to be very intense, which is why I love it. But, a lot of the adrenaline comes from performing live.

What do you feel when you sing with that power?

In one word: Untouchable. Gutturals come from a place of power. It's raw and uninhibited. You get high on the adrenaline! And, it feels like there's nothing in the world that can touch you.

Who is your favorite female and male vocalist in metal?

I would have to say Benjamin Falgoust of Goatwhore and Soilent Green. His overall style and showmanship are second to none in my opinion. And, Raffaella Rivarolo of Opera IX, Cadaveria, and DyNabyte. She was the first heavy female vocalist I found on my own. And being one of the first generations of women to be recognized in extreme music, I looked up to her greatly.

How do you train that powerful voice?

I've been singing since I was very young. Starting in choir in elementary and choral in high-school. When I eventually got into metal I applied what I already knew about singing and adjusted my voice to whatever tapes or CD's I could get my hands on.

Have you hurt yourself by singing some time?

A couple of times. When I was younger I liked to have a "few" drinks before a gig... never a good combo. You don't have the same control over your voice when you're drunk. Sometimes you push too hard.

What favorite bands do you have?

My musical taste is all over the spectrum... I go through obsessive phases with music. Currently, my to would probably be Woven Hand, Tears for Fears, Bloody Tyrant, Gowan, GoatWhore, Acid Bath, Quietus, Death, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Type O Negative.

Would you like to sing more brutal? like Black Metal

That's really a matter of perspective. I find Death Metal vocals to be more brutal because they're on the lower end of the spectrum. So, I always try to go lower.

Melodic Metal, Hard Rock or Extreme Metal and why?

Sorry. I can't pick just one. I listen to whatever suits my state of mind at the time. Besides, why limit yourself to one genre?

Tell us about UNEARTH THE UNDERWORLD (2018) how was the production?

UNEARTH THE UNDERWORLD was a labor of love. We had the privilege to work with some great people in our local scene and ended up with a product that the band was proud to put out.

Why you choose the Bison Hat song for the video? What does mean for you that song?

Bison Hat is where the album's title comes from. "Unearth the Underworld" being the last lyrics of the song.

Who wrote the songs of the álbum? How was the creation of each lyric of the álbum?

Everyone is responsible for writing their own material. But, basically Stephan (our lead Guitarist) is a riff machine and works with (our Drummer) Gord to create the skeleton and we go from there. The lyrics for the album were mostly written prior to my joining the band. With my writing credit only going on Wounds of the Righteous and Severed Earth.

What would you say to a female Singer Melodic Metal or Extreme Metal?

I'd probably say hello... You know, just interact with them as I would anyone else.

Will there be another new video coming soon?

Yes! We just had the pleasure of releasing Gord's playthrough video for WOUNDS OF THE RIGHTEOUS via the fine folks at Gear Gods and plan to be releasing more in the near future.

What plans does Tessitura band and you have for this year?

We have a plethora of great shows lined up this year so far. A weekend run with our brothers in Untimely Demise out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in early May, opening for Canadian Metal Forefathers Anvil in June, playing two of Western Canada's finest independent metal festivals: Armstrong Metal Fest and Loud as Hell. Beyond that, we will be back in the studio prepping for a new 2020 release.

Any new tour in Canada or Europe? Some news for your fans?

Unfortunately, no. No plans of any touring as of yet. But, we are busy at work writing new material and prepping to release a ton of new merch.

And Latino América?

Personally, I would love to be able to play Brazil, México or Colombia!! Some of history's greatest festivals have Latin Festivals. Such as ROCK IN RIO and ROCK AL PARQUE. Even just to attend a festival would be great! The line up for Metal México this year is killer!!

Desde 2008, Tessitura, con sede en Edmonton, dentro de la escena underground. Canadiense occidental con su ecléctica mezcla de death metal melódico, música progresiva y thrash clásico. Meticulosamente crearon su sonido único al estrechar el trabajo de guitarra de Stephan Ceña en el borde de su asiento, respaldándolo con las elevadoras líneas de bajo de Leillyn McColman y los patrones de batería de Gord Alexander, y refinando el sonido con el el tren de carga de doble voz de Ceña y los poderosos gritos y gruñidos inquietantes del vocalista Cyn Mercredi.

Dejando atrás el estilo más técnico de estilo progresivo que se encuentra en los dos primeros álbumes, 'Battle to Eternity' (2010) y 'Savage Embrace' (2013), abrazan su lado más afilado con 'Unearth the Underworld' (2018). Cyn Mercredi, eres adrenalina! ¿Porque Thrash Metal y Death Metal?

Encuentro que el metal, en general, es muy intenso, por eso me encanta. Pero, mucha de la adrenalina viene de actuar en vivo.

¿Qué sientes cuando cantas con ese poder?

En una palabra: intocable. Las guturales proceden de un lugar de poder. Es crudo y sin inhibiciones. ¡Te sacas la adrenalina! Y, parece que no hay nada en el mundo que pueda tocarte.

¿Quién es tu vocalista femenino y masculino favorito en el metal?

Tendría que decir Benjamin Falgoust de Goatwhore y Soilent Green. Su estilo general y su talento para el espectáculo son insuperables en mi opinión. Y, Raffaella Rivarolo de Opera IX, Cadaveria, y DyNabyte. Ella fue la primera vocalista pesada que encontré sola. Y siendo una de las primeras generaciones de mujeres en ser reconocidas en la música extrema, la admiré mucho.

¿Cómo entrenas esa voz poderosa?

He estado cantando desde que era muy joven. Empezando en coro en primaria y coral en bachillerato. Cuando finalmente me metí en el metal, apliqué lo que ya sabía sobre el canto y ajusté mi voz a cualquier cinta o CD que pudiera tener en mis manos.

¿Te has lastimado cantando alguna vez?

Un par de veces. Cuando era más joven me gustaba tomar unos "pocos" tragos antes de un concierto... nunca un buen combo. No tienes el mismo control sobre tu voz cuando estás borracho. A veces empujas demasiado fuerte.

¿Qué bandas favoritas tienes?

Mi gusto musical está en todo el espectro... Pasé por fases obsesivas con la música. En la actualidad, probablemente sea Woven Hand, Tears for Fears, Bloody Tyrant, Gowan, GoatWhore, Acid Bath, Quietus, Death, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony y Type O Negative.

¿Te gustaría cantar más brutal? como el Black Metal

Eso es realmente una cuestión de perspectiva. Encuentro que las voces de Death Metal son más brutales porque están en el extremo inferior del espectro. Entonces, siempre trato de ir más bajo.

Metal melódico, hard rock o metal extremo, ¿por qué?

Lo siento. No puedo elegir solo uno. Escucho lo que mejor se adapte a mi estado de ánimo en ese

momento. Además, ¿por qué limitarte a un género?

Cuéntanos acerca de UNEARTH THE UNDERWORLD (2018) ¿Cómo fue la producción?

UNEARTH THE UNDERWORLD fue un trabajo de amor. Tuvimos el privilegio de trabajar con grandes personas en nuestra escena local y terminamos con un producto que la banda estaba orgullosa de publicar.

¿Por qué eliges la canción Bison Hat para el vídeo? ¿Qué significa para ti esa canción?

Bison Hat es de donde viene el título del álbum. "Unearth the Underworld" es la última letra de la canción.

¿Quién escribió las canciones del álbum? ¿Cómo fue la creación de cada letra del álbum?

Todos son responsables de escribir su propio material. Pero, básicamente, Stephan (nuestro principal guitarrista) es una máquina de riffs y trabaja con (nuestro baterista) Gord para crear el esqueleto y nos dirigimos desde allí. La mayoría de las letras del álbum fueron escritas antes de unirme a la banda. Con mi crédito de la escritura sólo va wounds of the righteous y severed earth.

¿Qué le dirías a una cantante melódica o metal extremo?

Probablemente diría hola... Ya sabes, solo interactúa con ellas como lo haría con cualquier otra persona.

¿Habrá otro nuevo vídeo próximamente?

¡Sí! Tuvimos el placer de lanzar el vídeo de Gord para WOUNDS OF THE RIGHTEOUS la buena gente de Gear Gods y planeamos lanzar más en un futuro cercano.

¿Qué planes tiene Tessitura y tú para este año?

Tenemos una gran cantidad de grandes espectáculos alineados este año hasta ahora. Un fin de semana con nuestros hermanos en Untimely Demise de Saskatoon, Saskatchewan a principios de mayo, abriendo para Canadian Metal Forefathers Anvil en junio, tocando en dos de los mejores festivales de metal independientes de Canadá: Armstrong Metal Fest y Loud as Hell. Más allá de eso, volveremos a estar en el estudio preparándonos para una nueva versión de 2020.

¿Alguna nueva gira en Canadá o Europa? Algunas noticias para tus fans?

Lamentablemente no. No hay planes de ninguna gira hasta el momento. Pero, estamos ocupados en el trabajo escribiendo nuevos materiales y preparándonos para lanzar una tonelada de nuevos productos.

¿Y América latina?

Personalmente, me encantaría poder tocar en Brasil, México o Colombia!! Algunos de los festivales más grandes de la historia tienen festivales latinos. Como ROCK IN RIO y ROCK AL PARQUE. ¡Incluso solo asistir a un festival sería genial! ¡La alineación para Metal México este año es asesino!
