Based out of the Norwegian mountain community Auma, comes the grungy alt-pop duo Ask Carol. Ask Carol is a high energy power-duo with a big sound. Multitasking is their middle name. Two guitars, drums, a synth, a drum machine and an unique splitting system for Carol's guitar, makes this two-piece sound like a full band. Their sound can be fierce and mean, then suddenly turn soft and comforting.

Their sound could make you think of artists like the Kills, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with a Nordic, melancholic twist. Ask Carol has toured in the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Scandinavia, SXSW two times and more, and supported The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Their first EP was released on Grappa Musikkforlag. The band now put out their music on ChoVan Records, their own Indie Label. Given the special circumstances, tours and concerts are postponed. They have a concert scheduled for October 10th in Oslo. This year they will be focusing on new single Run With You (May 15th) and the upcoming album slated early 2021.

Hi, thank you so much for having us!

What are the Origins of Ask Carol, Musically and Emotionally?

AC:

This project started when we, Ask and Carol, the two members of Ask Carol, became

friends right after high school. We where studying music in southern Norway. We were

always talking about starting a band, but it would take about 7 years before we finally went

through with the idea. The summer of 2015 we stayed at a cabin in the Norwegian

mountains, with no electricity and no water, far away from people and civilization, only a

few sheep outside the windows. That's where our first songs were made, and where the seed

to what would become Ask Carol started. One more year went by before we started for real,

and Ask Carol was officially born, in 2016. Our first concert ever was at a small blues club

in Seoul, South Korea, called Strange Fruit. At that point, Carol was already a somewhat

known guitarist-for-hire in the Oslo music scene, and had never ever sung in front of people

before, or at all for that matter. That's why we wanted to try out our music and hold our first

concerts far away from our hometown.

A place that has inspired us a lot in the past has been Carol’s cabin, high in the Norwegian

mountains. There is no electricity and no water, so it’s a very old school way of life. And no

internet. That means less distraction, and room for inspiration. The inspiration might always

be there, but with all the constant impressions and distractions from the internet there is just

no room for it. That is where we wrote our first songs as Ask Carol, in that cabin.

Darkzen:

Interesting beginning of your band, very different from many others I've heard, Inspiration comes in moments of loneliness.

What does your band name mean? Why Ask Carol?

AC:

After thinking hard and long about the band name, with many pretty good suggestions, we

ended up with the simple band name Ask Carol, the first names of our two members, Ask

and Carol, put together. Ask is a real Norwegian name, coming from Norse Mythology, the

Viking religion; Ask was the first human being, created by the God Odin, out of a piece of

For you, What type of music did you listen to growing up and what is your favorite?

Ask:

I really loved The Clash, that was my favourite band back then, and still is one of

my favourites. They are great! As a teenager my taste was more narrow than now, but I

really loved 70s rock too, like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin.

Carol:

In my teenage years I loved Nirvana, still love them. And same as Ask I listened to lot of music from the 70s. Zepplin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix. I also loved Lauryn Hill and the Fugees.

Tell us a little about the two of you, what are your hobbies, do you have other jobs? If you weren't in this musical field, what would you be?

AC:

At the moment everything we do is something with Ask Carol. That’s because we do so many

different things. We do the music, of course, but we also do animation, design, clothing,

programming (websites etc.), filming, editing and many other things. It’s more than enough to keep

ourselves busy 24/7, but still get variation in what we do.

Ask did study architecture for a year some time ago, might have ended up as that.

Carol could have been a top level football player, if she had had the discipline as a

teenager when the talent scouts told her she had the potential. But music was more

important, so that was the reason the discipline wasn’t there. It just wasn’t the right

thing.

How did you two meet? Why only two members of the band?

AC:

We, Ask and Carol, met at something called a Folkehøyskole, which is kind of like a high school.

Both of us studied music there, in the south of Norway.

The reason we are only two members are many, but to mention a few: With all our touring it is

much cheaper to travel as only two persons. We brought a couple people on some tours a few years

ago, but we had to pay for them, and it got really expensive. It is also due to creative and musical

differences. It is hard to find someone who matches our style and taste.

Any favorite musical instrument? Besides the guitar

Ask:

I like drums. That’s why I started playing a couple of years ago. I’m pretty new to it, but it is a lot of fun and very useful when we are a duo.

Carol:

Mostly guitar, but I like the bass too, and a little trombone.

How was the preparation, production of your album EP Ask Carol? Especially in the production of the videos in a very natural way! and others with animation details.

AC:

The EP from 2018 was produced and recorded in Sweden together with producer Tobias Fröberg.

The was written long before that, at a cabin in the Norwegian mountains. Those were some of our

first songs. The later singles we produced ourselves in our studio in Auma. The videos are also

made here in Auma and in the surrounding woods and mountains. There is also a farm next to the

studio where there are cows. Sometimes we play for the cows, especially during Covid, they are the

only audience we have :)

The animation is also made by ourselves, everything from the ground up. It was one of our projects

during quarantine last year, learning how to make animations. It was a fun process and we will

definitely do more of it later!

Under what lyrical theme do you base yourself to write and compose, if so, your songs?

AC:

Many of our songs have a theme about doing your own thing, going your own way. Like Gonna Do

It and Caught Up In A Race. Others have a more dark, melancholic theme. Almost like an

psychologic thriller kind of.

The Do it in LA and Darkest Hour songs are different in musical style, and that's pretty good, one with a more Indi Rock style and a more Punk style, right? Why the musical variation of both?

AC:

Yes, that’s right! We love so many different types of music and we don’t want to be bound by one

specific genre. There are so many bands where every song just sounds like the same song. We don’t

wanna be like that. We have many more songs like both of them, and we have stuff in between.

We’re just waiting for the right moment to release them :)

Rock pop / Indie / Punk or why not something heavier? What style would it be for you in a new song?

AC:

We have some new songs coming up, which will be more dark and mystic. We are working in the

studio as we speak, working on an album that will be released later this year. Some of it might be a

little heavier as well.

For this 2021, how does Ask Carol support her fans if she can't perform live in front of the fans? Some online concert maybe coming up?

AC:

It is very sad that we cannot tour at the moment, but we try to keep posting stuff online, on

YOuTube, Instagram, TikTok etc. Hopefully we will get hold of a live-streaming rig in not too long, and we will also make more live-videos from our Auma Sonic Saloon.

Can’t wait to go on tour again though, and meet all our fans all over the world!

Anything else you want to share with us? What do you say to your fans! To Latin America and North America

AC:

The album will be coming in 2021. And when the Covid-situation gets better we will be coming on

tour to both Latin America and North America! We have heard so much great things about the

music scene over there, on the other side of the Atlantic. Really looking forward to meeting all of

Con base en la comunidad de las montañas noruegas Auma, llega el dúo de pop alternativo grungy Ask Carol. Ask Carol es un dúo de alta energía con un gran sonido. Multitarea es su segundo nombre. Dos guitarras, batería, un sintetizador, una caja de ritmos y un sistema de división único para la guitarra de Carol hacen que este sonido de dos piezas suene como una banda completa. Su sonido puede ser feroz y mezquino, y luego de repente volverse suave y reconfortante.

Su sonido podría hacerte pensar en artistas como The Kills, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs con un toque nórdico y melancólico. Ask Carol ha realizado giras en Filipinas, Japón, Corea del Sur, Escandinavia, SXSW dos veces y más, y ha apoyado a The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Hola, muchas gracias por invitarnos!!

¿Cuáles son los orígenes de Ask Carol, musical y emocionalmente?

A.C:

Este proyecto comenzó cuando nosotros, Ask y Carol, los dos miembros de Ask Carol, nos convertimos en amigos justo después de la escuela secundaria. Estudiábamos música en el sur de Noruega. Siempre hablando de formar una banda, pero nos tomaría unos 7 años antes de que finalmente fuéramos a través de la idea. El verano de 2015 nos alojamos en una cabaña en las montañas noruegas, sin electricidad y sin agua, lejos de la gente y la civilización, sólo un

pocas ovejas fuera de las ventanas. Ahí es donde se hicieron nuestras primeras canciones, y donde la semilla a lo que se convertiría en Ask Carol comenzó. Pasó un año más antes de que empezáramos de verdad y Ask Carol nació oficialmente en 2016. Nuestro primer concierto fue en un pequeño club de blues en Seúl, Corea del Sur, llamado Strange Fruit. En ese momento, Carol ya era un poco conocida guitarrista de alquiler en la escena musical de Oslo, y nunca había cantado frente a la gente antes, o en absoluto para el caso. Por eso queríamos probar nuestra música y celebrar nuestro primer concierto lejos de nuestra ciudad natal.

Un lugar que nos ha inspirado mucho en el pasado ha sido la cabaña de Carol, en lo alto de las montañas noruegas. No hay electricidad ni agua, por lo que es una forma de vida muy antigua. Y no Internet. Eso significa menos distracciones y espacio para la inspiración. La inspiración siempre puede estar allí, pero con todas las impresiones y distracciones constantes de Internet, solo no hay lugar para eso. Ahí es donde escribimos nuestras primeras canciones como Ask Carol, en esa cabaña.

Darkzen:

Interesante inicio de tu banda, muy diferente a muchas otras que he escuchado, la Inspiración llega en momentos de soledad.

¿Qué significa el nombre de su banda? ¿Por qué Ask Carol?

A.C:

Después de pensar mucho sobre el nombre de la banda, con muchas sugerencias bastante buenas, terminó con el nombre simple de la banda Ask Carol, los nombres de nuestros dos miembros, Ask y Carol, juntos. Ask es un nombre noruego real, procedente de la mitología nórdica, el Religión vikinga; Ask fue el primer ser humano, creado por el dios Odin, a partir de una pieza de Ceniza de madera. Para ustedes, ¿Qué tipo de música escucharon cuando eran pequeños y cuál es su favorita?

Ask:

Realmente me encantó The Clash, esa era mi banda favorita en ese entonces, y todavía es una de mis favoritas. ¡Son geniales! Cuando era adolescente mi gusto era más estrecho que ahora, pero. También amaba el rock de los 70, como Pink Floyd, Deep Purple y Led Zeppelin.

Carol:

En mi adolescencia amaba a Nirvana, todavía los amo. Y al igual que Ask, escuché mucha música de los 70. Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath y Jimi Hendrix. También me encantó Lauryn Hill and the Fugees.

Cuéntanos un poco sobre ustedes dos, ¿Cuáles son sus aficiones, tienen otros trabajos? Si no estuvieras en este campo musical, ¿Cuál sería?

A.C:

Por el momento, todo lo que hacemos es algo con Ask Carol. Eso es porque hacemos tantos

cosas diferentes. Hacemos la música, por supuesto, pero también hacemos animación, diseño, indumentaria, programación (sitios web, etc.), filmación, edición y muchas otras cosas. Es más que suficiente para mantener estamos ocupados las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, pero todavía tenemos variaciones en lo que hacemos.

Ask estudió arquitectura durante un año hace algún tiempo, podría haber terminado así. Carol podría haber sido una jugadora de fútbol de alto nivel, si hubiera tenido la disciplina como

adolescente cuando los cazatalentos le dijeron que tenía el potencial. Pero la música era mas

importante, así que esa era la razón por la que la disciplina no estaba allí. Simplemente no era lo correcto.

¿Cómo se conocieron? ¿Por qué solo dos miembros de la banda?

A.C:

Nosotros, Ask y Carol, nos conocimos en algo llamado Folkehøyskole, que es como una escuela secundaria. Ambos estudiamos música allí, en el sur de Noruega.

La razón por la que somos solo dos miembros son muchas, pero por mencionar algunas: con todas nuestras giras es mucho más barato viajar solo para dos personas. Trajimos a un par de personas en algunas giras algunos años. pero tuvimos que pagar por ellos, y se puso muy caro. También se debe a la creatividad y la música, diferencias. Es difícil encontrar a alguien que coincida con nuestro estilo y gusto.

¿Algún instrumento musical favorito? Además de la guitarra

Ask:

Me gustan la Batería. Por eso empecé a tocar hace un par de años. Soy bastante nuevo en esto, pero es muy divertido y muy útil cuando somos un dúo.

Carol:

Sobre todo guitarra, pero también me gusta el bajo y un pequeño trombón.

¿Cómo fue la preparación, producción de tu álbum EP Ask Carol? ¡Especialmente en la producción de los videos de una manera muy natural! y otros con detalles de animación.

A.C:

El EP de 2018 fue producido y grabado en Suecia junto con el productor Tobias Fröberg. Él fue escrito mucho antes de eso, en una cabaña en las montañas noruegas. Esos fueron algunos de nuestras primeras canciones. Los últimos singles los produjimos nosotros mismos en nuestro estudio en Auma. Los videos también son hechos aquí en Auma y en los bosques y montañas circundantes. También hay una finca junto al estudio donde hay vacas. A veces jugamos con las vacas, especialmente durante Covid, son la única audiencia que tenemos :)

La animación también la hacemos nosotros mismos, todo desde cero. Fue uno de nuestros proyectos durante la cuarentena el año pasado, aprendiendo a hacer animaciones. Fue un proceso divertido y lo haremos

¡Definitivamente haremos más después!

¿Bajo qué tema lírico te basas para escribir y componer, si es así, tus canciones?

A.C:

Muchas de nuestras canciones tienen un tema sobre hacer tus propias cosas, seguir tu propio camino. Como voy a hacer y atrapado en una carrera. Otros tienen un tema más oscuro y melancólico. Casi como un tipo de thriller psicológico.

Las canciones de Do it in LA y Darkest Hour son diferentes en estilo musical, y eso es bastante bueno, una con un estilo más Indi Rock y un estilo más Punk, ¿verdad? ¿Por qué la variación musical de ambos?

A.C:

¡Sí, eso es correcto! Amamos tantos tipos diferentes de música y no queremos estar atados por uno

género específico. Hay tantas bandas en las que cada canción suena como la misma canción. Nosotros no queremos ser así. Tenemos muchas más canciones como las dos y tenemos cosas intermedias. Solo estamos esperando el momento adecuado para publicarlos :)

Rock pop / Indie / Punk o ¿Por qué no algo más pesado? ¿Qué estilo sería para ti en una nueva canción?

A.C:

Tenemos algunas canciones nuevas que serán más oscuras y místicas. Estamos trabajando en el estudio mientras hablamos, trabajando en un álbum que se lanzará a finales de este año. Algo de esto podría ser un un poco más pesado también.

Para este 2021, ¿Cómo apoya Ask Carol a sus fanáticos si no puede actuar en vivo frente a ellos? ¿Algún concierto en línea pronto?

A.C:

Es muy triste que no podamos hacer una gira en este momento, pero intentamos seguir publicando cosas en línea, en YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Con suerte, conseguiremos una plataforma de transmisión en vivo en poco tiempo y también haremos más videos en vivo desde nuestro Auma Sonic Saloon. Sin embargo, estoy deseando volver a salir de gira y conocer a todos nuestros fans de todo el mundo.

El álbum llegará en 2021. Y cuando la situación de Covid mejore, continuaremos gira a América Latina y América del Norte! Hemos escuchado tantas cosas buenas sobre el escena musical allá, al otro lado del Atlántico. Tengo muchas ganas de conocer a todos ustedes!!
