¿Who is Melody Dylem?

 

Melody started at age 15 as a singer in different events (private concerts, company parties, etc.). In 2000, she had her first television appearance on the Swiss french TV (« les Coups de cœur » of Alain Morisod. Then she had the opportunity to get into the Little Dreams Foundation created by Orianne and Phil Collins where she was sponsored by the artist Phil Collins during her training (singing lessons at CV Prod Paris, at the Swiss Jazz School of Bern, danse, theater…) until she became graduated in 2004. During year 2001, Melody was invited to sing a duet with Phil Collins and his legendary musicians (Chester Thompson, Leland Sklar, …) on the hit single “A groovy kind of love” at the Grand Casino of Geneva. During those four years at the Little Dreams Foundation, Melody sang with the « LDF band » on most of the greatest scenes in Switzerland (Arena of Geneva, Montreux Jazz Festival, Stadium of Sion (supporting act for canadian singer Garou), etc.). In 2003, she was semi-finalist of international competition « Jazz Voice Montreux jazz festival ». Between 2006-2013, she was the singer of different studio projects and did private concerts. She also was a singing teacher in different music school. In 2012, Melody created the band “Tribute to Rock” in which she covers various songs of Rock FM’. She began to create her first solo album called DYLEM in her home studio in 2013. Melody is also dancing as modern jazz as classical since she is 6. She sings in the band “Elferya” since 2015.

¿How are you?

 

Hi, Darkzen! I feel good. Even if it’s very intensive those times with my band. We released our debut and self-titled album « DYLEM » in January thru the german label 7hard. We got really good echoes and reviews in that great german magazine and webzines. A couple of songs of the album were even elected to feature in amazing compilations of Symphonic metal for a worldwide distribution. And right now we just started to promote the album with live shows. Yesterday we played in our home town in Switzerland and that was a great pleasure to play those songs live and to share our universe with the audience.

 

¿Who is the beautiful voice of Dylem? Tell us a little about your musical career!

 

Thanks for the compliment! So I’m Melody Dylem and I’m the singer and the co-composer of the songs of the album with the keyboardist Donovan. DYLEM actually started as a duet before being a combo of 5 musicians. I also wrote all the lyrics.

 

Coming from a musician family, I started singing at early age. And when I was 15, I had the great chance to join the Little Dreams Foundation (of Phil Collins) during four years and I even had the honor to sing in duet with Phil Collins himself! After that, I sang in different bands in Switzerland (cover bands, symphonic metal, etc.) before beginning my own project DYLEM.

 

¿Tell us which are your Singer favorites and why?

 

I like the vocal technique of James Labrie from Dream Theater. I’m also a huge fan of Steven Tyler of Aersomith. For female singers, I love Maria Brink from « In This Moment ». I like the different ways she can sing and her energy. And I’m not speaking about her on stage….  And also Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation or Floor Jansen.

¿Dylem, in what concept has the Rock and the Hard Rock? Like musical style

 

Some of our songs are more rock than heavy metal. But Rock and Hard Rock are music that we listen to a lot. With Donovan, we compose with the feeling of the moment. Sometimes we feel melodic rock, sometimes we feel more progressive rock or metal.

 

¿Why this musical style ‘Rock and Hard Rock’ that mean to you? ¿There are some difference between both sounds to you?

 

Hard Rock as a style of music is always leaded by power guitar riffs. In DYLEM, the difference is that all of the songs were and are first composed with piano melodies. The guitars comes after in the composition process. That’s why we are maybe more like Melodic Heavy or Melodic/Gothic Rock than a Hard Rock band. 

 

¿What proposes the Dylem band musically?

 

DYLEM is mostly a mix between classical music, melodic rock, symphonic metal and progressive rock.

 

¿Tell us about your album called 'Dylem', the álbum is romantic? The Covert art is beautiful!

 

Our album contains 9 songs, including an instrumental. Most of the songs are sung in English but three of them are in French (as I come from the french part of Switzerland).

 

The cover art of the album has been designed by one of the greatest : Mr. Hugh Syme. He was the designer who did Rush cover arts, as well as Dream Theater, Flying Colors or Whitesnake. It was a huge opportunity to work with someone like him on a debut album. He immediately liked a lot our first single « Walk Away », the voice and the arrangements and accepted to work with an « emerging » band.

 

¿As was the production and lyrical of the álbum?

 

The album was made in two times. We first recorded two songs with studio musicians. Those song allows us to get in touch with the label and to have the opportunity of having a distribution. And than we recorded the rest of the album with the actual musicians line-up.

 

My lyrics talk about the dilemmas between good and bad, vengeance and pardon. The big dilemmas in life.

 

¿Do you have another Project or only with the band?

 

Sometimes I do replacement in other bands or sing for studio sessions. But DYLEM is more personal and my priority right now even if I could accept propositions from other bands.

 

The  ‘Walk Away’ video is great! There are passion! How was the production?

 

It’s the first single the album and the first music video we did. That video clip convinced as much the label as the designer Hugh Syme to go further with a whole album. Sebastian Maeder (the brother of Nic Maeder, the singer of the Swiss Hard Rock band Gotthard), was the director of this video clip. Nature offered us a tremendous moment when we shot the video clip. That snow was not at all expected that day and it gave us a great fairytale ambiance.

 

¿There will be another new video? In the next year?

 

We have released two music videos this year. One for the song « For Always » which is a song dedicated to my child and which is a melodic rock song of the album. We released also a video clip of the song « Passe le Passé », a melancholic song with French singing. 

 

¿Any surprises of the band? Working in the new album maybe?

 

We are in fact working on new songs. We like to compose in Winter, when it’s cold outside in Swizerland. We already integrated 3 brand new songs in our setlist for the live. They are more metal progressive.

¿Quien es Melody Dylem?

 

Melody comenzó a los 15 años como cantante en diferentes eventos (conciertos privados, fiestas de empresa, etc.). En el año 2000 tuvo su primera aparición en televisión en la TV francesa suiza ( «les Coups de cœur» de Alain Morisod y luego tuvo la oportunidad de entrar en la Fundación Little Dreams creada por Orianne y Phil Collins donde fue patrocinada por el artista Phil Collins durante su formación (clases de canto en CV Prod Paris, en la Escuela de Jazz Suiza de Berna, danse, teatro ...) hasta que se graduó en 2004. Durante el año 2001, Melody fue invitado a cantar un dúo con Phil Collins y su legendario Músicos (Chester Thompson, Leland Sklar, ...) en el éxito "Grandioso de Amor" en el Grand Casino de Ginebra. Durante estos cuatro años en la Fundación Little Dreams, Melody cantó con la "banda LDF" en la mayoría de los Las mejores escenas de Suiza (Arena de Ginebra, Festival de Jazz de Montreux, Estadio de Sion, etc.) En 2003 fue semifinalista de la competición internacional Jazz Voice Montreux. -2013, fue cantante de diferentes proyectos de estudio e hizo conciertos privados. También fue profesora de canto en diferentes escuelas de música. En 2012, Melody creó la banda "Tribute to Rock" en la que cubre varias canciones de Rock FM '. Ella comenzó a crear su primer álbum en solitario llamado DYLEM en su estudio en casa en 2013. Melody también baila jazz moderno y clásico desde que tiene 6 años. Canta en la banda "Elferya" desde 2015.

¿Cómo estás?

 

Hola, Darkzen! Me siento bien. Incluso si es muy intenso estos tiempos con mi banda. Lanzamos nuestro álbum debut y autotitulado «DYLEM» en enero a través de la etiqueta alemana 7hard. Nos dieron muy buenos ecos y críticas en esa gran revista alemana y webzines. Un par de canciones del álbum fueron incluso elegidas para figurar en increíbles compilaciones de Metal Sinfónico para una distribución mundial. Y ahora mismo empezamos a promocionar el álbum con shows en vivo. Ayer tocamos en nuestra ciudad natal en Suiza y fue un gran placer tocar esas canciones en directo y compartir nuestro universo con la audiencia.

 

 

¿Quién es la bella voz de Dylem? Cuéntanos un poco sobre tu carrera musical!

 

¡Gracias por el cumplido! Soy Melody Dylem y soy el cantante y co-compositor de las canciones del álbum con el tecladista Donovan. DYLEM realmente comenzó como dueto antes de ser un combo de 5 músicos. También escribí todas las letras.

 

Viniendo de una familia de músicos, empecé a cantar a temprana edad. Cuando tenía 15 años, tuve la gran oportunidad de unirme a la Little Dreams Foundation (de Phil Collins) durante cuatro años e incluso tuve el honor de cantar en dueto con Phil Collins mismo! Después de eso, canté en diferentes bandas en Suiza (bandas de covers, metal sinfónico, etc.) antes de comenzar mi propio proyecto DYLEM.

 

¿Cuéntanos cuáles son tus Cantantes favoritos y por qué?

 

Me gusta la técnica vocal de James Labrie de Dream Theater. También soy un gran fan de Steven Tyler de Aersomith. Para las cantantes, amo a Maria Brink de «In This Moment». Me gustan las diferentes maneras que ella puede cantar y su energía. Y no estoy hablando de ella en el escenario.... Y también Sharon den Adel de Within Temptation o Floor Jansen.

¿Dylem, en qué concepto tiene el Rock y el Hard Rock? Como estilo musical

 

Algunas de nuestras canciones son más rock que heavy metal. Pero Rock y Hard Rock son música que escuchamos mucho. Con Donovan, componemos con la sensación del momento. A veces nos sentimos rock melódico, a veces nos sentimos más rock progresivo o metal.

 

¿Por qué este estilo musical 'Rock y Hard Rock' Que significa para ti? ¿Hay alguna diferencia entre ambos sonidos?

 

Hard Rock como un estilo de música siempre está dirigido por riffs de guitarra de potencia. En DYLEM, la diferencia es que todas las canciones fueron y son primeramente compuestas con melodías de piano. Las guitarras viene después en el proceso de composición. Es por eso que somos quizás más como Melodic Heavy o Melodic / Gothic Rock que una banda de Hard Rock.

 

¿Qué propone musicalmente la banda de Dylem?

 

DYLEM es sobre todo una mezcla entre la música clásica, la roca melódica, el metal sinfónico y el rock progresivo.

 

¿Cuéntanos sobre tu álbum llamado 'Dylem', el álbum es romántico? ¡El arte es muy bonito!

 

Nuestro álbum contiene 9 canciones, incluyendo un instrumental. La mayoría de las canciones se cantan en inglés, pero tres de ellas están en francés (como vengo de la parte francesa de Suiza).

 

La portada del álbum ha sido diseñada por uno de los más grandes: Mr. Hugh Syme. Él fue el diseñador que hizo los Cover Arts, como el de Dream Theater, Flying Colors o Whitesnake. Fue una gran oportunidad para trabajar con alguien como él en un álbum de debut. Inmediatamente le gustó mucho nuestro primer single «Walk Away», la voz y los arreglos y aceptó trabajar con una banda «emergente».

 

¿Cómo fue la producción y lírica del álbum?

 

El álbum se hizo en dos ocasiones. Primero grabamos dos canciones con músicos de estudio. Esas canciónes nos permiten entrar en contacto con la marca y tener la oportunidad de tener una distribución. Y después grabamos el resto del álbum con la actual alineación.

 

Mis letras hablan de los dilemas entre lo bueno y lo malo, la venganza y el perdón. Los grandes dilemas en la vida.

 

 

¿Tienes otro proyecto o solo con la banda?

 

A veces hago reemplazo en otras bandas o canto para sesiones de estudio. Pero DYLEM es más personal y mi prioridad ahora incluso si podría aceptar proposiciones de otras bandas.

 

El video de 'Walk Away' es genial! ¡Hay pasión! ¿Cómo fue la producción?

 

Es el primer sencillo del álbum y el primer video musical que hicimos. Ese videoclip convenció tanto al sello como al diseñador Hugh Syme de ir más allá con un álbum entero. Sebastian Maeder (el hermano de Nic Maeder, el cantante de la banda suiza Hard Rock Gotthard), fue el director de este video clip. La naturaleza nos ofreció un tremendo momento cuando filmamos el videoclip. Que la nieve no era en absoluto esperaba ese día y nos dio un gran ambiente de cuento de hadas.

 

¿Habrá otro video nuevo? ¿El próximo año?

 

Hemos lanzado dos videos musicales este año. Uno para la canción «For Always», que es una canción dedicada a mi hijo y que es una canción de rock melódico del álbum. Lanzamos también un videoclip de la canción «Passe le Passé», una canción melancólica con canto francés.

 

¿Alguna sorpresa de la banda? ¿Trabajar en el nuevo álbum tal vez?

 

De hecho estamos trabajando en nuevas canciones. Nos gusta componer en invierno, cuando hace frío fuera de Suiza. Ya hemos integrado 3 nuevas canciones en nuestro setlist para el en vivo. Son más metal progresivo.
