Among The Brave Ones is the album that makes history as the return of the Black Widows after 20 years. The first all-female metal band in Portugal (formed in 1995) appears with a shattering sound resulting from the determination to come back stronger than ever. This album is dedicated to musicians' resilience in the chaotic world we live in.

How have you all been?
BW:
Hello and thank you for the interview. We’ve been extremely busy rehearsing for the presentation shows of our album, and also answering to interviews and dealing with all the exciting duties of releasing an album.
Who are all of you? ¿Do you have other projects? Jobs? ¿hobbies?
BW:
Well, most of us are experienced musicians. Our drummer Marta plays for Gwydion and I sing in Enchantya. But we have been in the music business for quite some years now. We all have daily jobs beside this job of having a band and we enjoy what most Portuguese people do:traveling, beach, spending time with friends and families, going to concerts, animals, among other things.
What have you done in all this time before your musical comeback?
BW:
We have also been playing with our bands and other projects. During this pause with Black Widows, since 2005, with some ups and downs, I dedicated myself to Enchantya and been also guest musician in some bands.
When did you make the decision 'it's time to return to the world of metal'?
BW:
I never left the metal world since I started. It has been a passion. However, about Black Widows, somehow in 2018, I saw Monica, who had been previously playing keyboards for the band, and asked her if she was willing to get the band working again with me and with new musicians to record an album. She accepted and that was a good restart of the band. We were lucky enough to find Marta, Solange and Íris who joined afterwards.
Do you have any proposals for a tour of your country and thus promote your new album?
BW:
I’m contacting some booking agencies in order to prepare a tour. After receiving all answers we have to work with what we have on the table and also with our personal and professional schedules to make it work. For now, we’re playing in Lisbon, Porto, Pindelo dos Milagres (Portugal).
By the way! I must congratulate them! Good album! Heavy, Dark, Hard and Gothic, how did the production of the album and the lyrics come about?
BW:
Thank you so much! This album was created before an during the pandemic period of Covid. We had some old songs that we adapted to the new line up of the band, then we composed songs in rehearsal room, and when we couldn’t leave home (pandemic period), we also created more songs. It was quite challenging.
For me lyrics and vocal lines always come after the music is done it makes more sense to me because I can feel the song and get into its vibe.
When entering in studio, we worked with amazing Fernando Matias, our producer, who always takes the songs to some leves up!
The whole album is as I described it before, the chords, the drums and above all the combination of guttural and clean voices, how did you do for the whole composition?
BW:
Team work, rehearsals, emailing ideas, listening to everybody’s opinions.
I’ve always sang like that. I just added a more rock stylish to some songs.
Do you already have a new video in the works about your new album?
BW:
We released 3 videos. Black Orchid, Among the Brave Ones and Schizo.

Any surprise behind your new album, any different musical combination, any anecdote?
BW:
The only surprise is that people can’t label it to a type of metal. It’s a album for people who listen it for the music, the lyrics but don’t try to fit the songs into a metal type. We make songs for the passion of music. That’s our true freedom.
Do you have the Goth/Black/Death Metal style, if it were the case and you made another single, would you like it to be only Black/Death so heavier?
BW:
I have no idea. I actually can’t put it that way. We do have an ideia for a future video and the song that’s going to be in it, but I’m too biased to even put it into a style… it’s heavy as hell, that it’s true.
What does the cover of your new album mean?
BW:
Just like the Olympics where you pass the torch, we, musicians, pass the musical torch and we are united, resilient and brave.
With this very good musical return, what does the band Black Widows have for us in this new year 2023 onwards?
BW:
Concerts and maybe a reedition of some songs we released 20 years ago. We are working on that!

Among The Brave Ones es el álbum que hace historia como el regreso de las Viudas Negras después de 20 años. La primera banda de metal íntegramente femenina de Portugal (formada en 1995) aparece con un sonido demoledor fruto de la determinación de volver más fuertes que nunca. Este álbum está dedicado a la resiliencia de los músicos en el mundo caótico en el que vivimos.

¿Cómo han estado?
BW:
Hola y gracias por la entrevista. Hemos estado extremadamente ocupadas ensayando para los programas de presentación de nuestro álbum, y también respondiendo a entrevistas y lidiando con todos los emocionantes deberes de lanzar un álbum.
¿Quiénes son todas ustedes? ¿Tienes otros proyectos? ¿Trabajos? ¿aficiones?
BW:
Bueno, la mayoría de nosotras somos músicos experimentadas. Nuestra baterista Marta toca para Gwydion y yo canto en Enchantya. Pero hemos estado en el negocio de la música durante bastantes años. Todas tenemos trabajos diarios además de este trabajo de tener una banda y disfrutamos de lo que hace la mayoría de los portugueses: viajar, ir a la playa, pasar tiempo con amigos y familiares, ir a conciertos, animales, entre otras cosas.
¿Qué has hecho en todo este tiempo antes de su regreso musical?
BW:
También hemos estado tocando con nuestras bandas y otros proyectos. Durante esta pausa con Black Widows, desde 2005, con algunos altibajos, me dediqué a Enchantya y también fui músico invitada en algunas bandas.
¿Cuándo tomaste la decisión de 'es hora de volver al mundo del metal'?
BW:
Nunca dejé el mundo del metal desde que empecé. Ha sido una pasión. Sin embargo, sobre Black Widows, de alguna manera en 2018, vi a Mónica, que anteriormente había tocado teclados para la banda, y le pregunté si estaba dispuesta a que la banda volviera a trabajar conmigo y con nuevos músicos para grabar un álbum. Ella aceptó y eso fue un buen reinicio de la banda. Tuvimos la suerte de encontrarnos con Marta, Solange e Íris que se sumaron después.
¿Tienen alguna propuesta para hacer una gira por tu país y así promocionar su nuevo disco?
BW:
Me estoy poniendo en contacto con algunas agencias para preparar un recorrido. Después de recibir todas las respuestas, tenemos que trabajar con lo que tenemos sobre la mesa y también con nuestros horarios personales y profesionales para que funcione. Por ahora tocamos en Lisboa, Oporto, Pindelo dos Milagres (Portugal).
¡De paso! ¡Debo felicitarlas! ¡Buen álbum! Heavy, Dark, Hard y Gothic, ¿Cómo surgió la producción del álbum y las letras?
BW:
¡Muchas gracias! Este álbum fue creado antes y durante el período de pandemia de Covid. Teníamos algunas canciones antiguas que adaptamos a la nueva formación de la banda, luego compusimos canciones en la sala de ensayo y cuando no podíamos salir de casa (período de pandemia), también creamos más canciones. Fue bastante desafiante.
Para mí, las letras y las líneas vocales siempre vienen después de que la música está terminada, tiene más sentido para mí porque puedo sentir la canción y entrar en su ambiente.
Al entrar en el estudio, trabajamos con el increíble Fernando Matias, nuestro productor, ¡quien siempre lleva las canciones a un nivel superior!
Todo el disco es como lo describí antes, los acordes, la batería y sobre todo la
combinación de voces guturales y limpias, ¿Cómo les fue en toda la composición?
BW:
Trabajo en equipo, ensayos, enviar ideas por correo electrónico, escuchar las opiniones de todos.
Siempre he cantado así. Acabo de añadir un estilo más rockero a algunas canciones.
¿Ya tienen un nuevo video en proceso sobre su nuevo álbum?
BW:
Lanzamos 3 videos. Orquídea negra, Entre los valientes y Esquizo.

¿Alguna sorpresa detrás de vuestro nuevo disco, alguna combinación musical diferente, alguna anécdota?
BW:
La única sorpresa es que la gente no puede etiquetarlo con un tipo de metal. Es un álbum para personas que lo escuchan por la música, las letras, pero no intentan encajar las canciones en un tipo de metal. Hacemos canciones por la pasión de la música. Esa es nuestra verdadera libertad.
¿Tienen el estilo Goth/Black/Death Metal, si fuera el caso e hicieras otro single, te gustaría que fuera solo Black/Death más pesado?
BW:
No tengo ni idea. En realidad, no puedo decirlo de esa manera. Tenemos una idea para un video futuro y la canción que estará en él, pero soy demasiado parcial para siquiera ponerlo en un estilo... es pesado como el infierno, eso es verdad.
¿Qué significa la portada de su nuevo álbum?
BW:
Al igual que los Juegos Olímpicos donde pasas la antorcha, nosotros, los músicos, pasamos la antorcha musical y somos unidos, resilientes y valientes.
Con este muy buen regreso musical, ¿Qué nos depara la banda Black Widows en este nuevo año 2023 en adelante?
BW:
Conciertos y tal vez una reedición de algunas canciones que lanzamos hace 20 años. ¡Estamos trabajando en eso!

BW:
