Their return to this world began in February 2009 when Shakey Sue and her guitarist decided to amp up the sophistication of the music they were playing as members of an established surf-psycho band. Sue abandoned her drumsticks and the guitarist grabbed his Gretsch and after teaming up with two other friends who were rocking the punk world the Hellfreaks were born.
The potency of this change was in evidence within third album Astoria, released 2016. With this piece they separated themself from the billy-roots and went straight forward to their new way they can call their own now: fresh, modern punk rock, with a high melodic punch, rockin’ guitars and a female singer between poppy notes till roaring lungs added with a tiny dose of hardcore-attitude.
In 2020 the band released their 4th album God On The Run, an unbridled stomp which unapologetically puts all before in the shade.
Hi Shakey! Thank you very much for this interview! How are you? Welcome to Darkzen Dragon Metal Angels!
Shakey:
Hello! Thank you so much for having me!
How about this beginning of the year 2021?
Shakey:
2020 wasn’t a total disaster for us. It was unexpected, for sure, but we released our 4th, strongest record ever and it’s definitely brought us a big step closer to where we want to be with the band. Even though, thanks to covid, I guess 2021 can only get better!
Let me congratulate you, you have a lot of energy! You sing phenomenal! How did you get started on the Punk path? Nowadays it is a bit difficult to see bands within this style
Shakey:
Thank you so much! Well, I try to put a lot of energy into it because that’s what I want to give and share with our audience: a lot of strength, especially during these times!
I would say that I grew up as a typical subculture kid. In my early teen years, I turned to punk, hardcore and metal because I felt like these scenes were the ones that took all the frustration and anger and tried to make something better of it. When I started singing, it was out of the question that this was the path that I was going to choose for myself.
I don’t consider myself as a punk singer or ourselves as a punk band as we mix a lot of elements from pretty much all kinds of rock genres. I truly believe that this is what makes the sound unique! On the other side, the band has changed a lot through the years. Back in 2009 we started as a psychobilly band and later on in 2015, after a split up and reinvention, we came back with the intention to ignore all the genre boundaries we’d been faced with. That’s how we ended up where we are now: punk rock predators soaked in metal aggression!
Who are your biggest influences within Punk?
Shakey:
The Distillers, Rise Against and thousand other bands.
Just Punk or another musical style? Metal maybe? Something harder like Death Metal?
Shakey:
I guess everything I listen to is an influence in some form and the palette goes way beyond your suggestions! I’m a huge fan of female fronted metal and hardcore bands, like Walls Of Jericho, Jinjer, In This Moment or hard rock bands like the Pretty Reckless, Marilyn Manson, Billy Talent. But I’m also listening to more popular sounds, like K.Flay and Yungblud.
Do you have an alternate project or other job?
Shakey:
I studied as an environmental engineer, but I ended up in digital marketing. Actually I have a very split life, if I can say it that way but I guess you could predict that.
What do you feel when expressing all your emotion be it anger or joy in a song?
Shakey:
Both, sometimes at the same time. Actually my lyrics are pretty dark. I’m just much better at putting all the negative feelings into words rather than the positive ones. This doesn’t mean that I’m a sad person, that is just the vibe that makes me write music and that was also the vibe that made me find music.
Do you think the genre is in decline today?
Shakey:
Well, I think if you want to do anything profit oriented, you should definitely ignore rock music. But just for now, only at the moment. If you look back in time, rock music always had its waves and I think that we’re close to the moment when it makes a come back. From what I see, the world has started to go backwards again: the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, the acceptance of diversity seems to run against the wall - at least in our area. People are sad, pissed off, suppressed. Especially the young generation who clearly see that this is just not the world they want to live in. They all need a kind of “valve” to let these negative feelings out and turn them into something they can believe in. I do believe that rock music is the answer for that. Sure, not the same way and not in the same style that it’s been in the past, but reinvented in their own way.
What would you say to the new generations about this style and about your band Hellfreaks? For those who have not listened to you
Shakey:
We’re a band that learned from its own skin just how poisonous it can be to look back in the past, instead of looking forward to the future. When we reinvented ourselves in 2015 the main goal was to ignore the genre boundaries, to mix things that are unusual, to be brave and to ignore what fans expect from us. It was the best decision I’ve ever made and I couldn't be happier with how we are presented as a band right now. Also lyrics wise: from psychobilly fairytale’s, we changed to honest thoughts. Whenever I read a comment about “Why aren’t we psychobilly anymore” I just roll my eyes and think how sad, that some are just stuck in the past.
I think that’s exactly the same thing as when the younger generation feel like they face the old school values of society. Time has changed the world and we have to change with it. That’s what our music stands for.
Tell us about your album "God On The Run", did you write the songs? And on what subject were those songs written with a lot of energy and fury?
Shakey:
The songs aren’t written in the rehearsal room anymore, but of course they were written by us all in a small room in front of a computer by our bass player. After a certain point, our guitarist and drummer also added their ideas, but the root of all the songs came from Gabi. That means the actual recording of the songs only happened after many-many demos.
I’m pretty old school when it comes to the lyrics: I can’t sit down and figure out what I want to write about on purpose. The ideas find me randomly, so I always write down 2-3 words or a line in my phone wherever I am in that moment, otherwise the idea is gone forever. When it comes to the song I look at my idea board and pick out one of these ideas to work on. When I start to work on the words, I need to be alone and I’m not able to write in digital form, I need to have a pen and paper in my hand, otherwise my brain is blocked.
GOTR is lyrically inspired by imperfection. It’s about our own imperfections and those of our surroundings. It’s about the feeling of drowning and standing our ground to win the fight at the same time. It’s a mix of honest thoughts vocally and instrumentally. We merge metal, punk, rock music and maybe even a bit of hardcore. Something which seems impossible to categorize even though we know that most people just NEED categories to know what to think of it … But we’ll never fit in and this is one of our best qualities and that’s what we want to share with the audience: don’t force yourself to fit in. Doesn’t matter what the topic is.
Your past video is great Doldrum Dynasty, will you keep releasing another video?
Shakey:
Oh yes! But I can’t reveal more at the moment!
Some date maybe of a concert in your country? Or some concert online?All the fans and that includes me, we are waiting for a concert, what can you tell us, something you want to share with us?
Shakey:
At this point, it is impossible to plan any shows. Sure, we want to! When Covid started back in the beginning of 2020, we NEVER expected that it would last this long. That’s why we still don’t dare to plan with tours.
What are the goals of this year 2021 for you?
Shakey:
Our focus is now on the creative process: we’re already working on a new record!

Su regreso a este mundo comenzó en febrero de 2009 cuando Shakey Sue y su guitarrista decidieron ampliar la sofisticación de la música que tocaban como miembros de una banda establecida de surf-psicópata. Sue abandonó sus baquetas y el guitarrista agarró su Gretsch y después de formar equipo con otros dos amigos que estaban sacudiendo el mundo punk nacieron los Hellfreaks.
La potencia de este cambio se puso de manifiesto en el tercer álbum Astoria, lanzado en 2016. Con esta pieza se separaron de los billy-roots y se dirigieron directamente a su nueva forma que ahora pueden llamar suya: punk rock fresco y moderno, con un golpe melódico alto, guitarras rockeras y una cantante femenina entre notas amapolas hasta pulmones rugientes añadidos con una pequeña dosis de actitud hardcore.
En 2020, la banda lanzó su cuarto álbum God On The Run, un pisotón desenfrenado que sin pedir disculpas pone a todo lo anterior en la sombra.

¿Qué tal este comienzo del año 2021?
Shakey:
2020 no fue un desastre total para nosotros. Fue inesperado, seguro, pero lanzamos nuestro cuarto disco, el más fuerte de todos los tiempos, y definitivamente nos acercó un gran paso a donde queremos estar con la banda. Aunque, gracias al covid, ¡supongo que 2021 solo puede mejorar!
Déjame felicitarte, ¡tienes mucha energía! ¡Cantas fenomenal! ¿Cómo empezaste en el camino Punk? Hoy en día es un poco difícil ver bandas dentro de este estilo.
Shakey:
¡Muchas gracias! Bueno, trato de ponerle mucha energía porque eso es lo que quiero dar y compartir con nuestra audiencia: mucha fuerza, ¡especialmente en estos tiempos!
Diría que crecí como una niña típica de una subcultura. En mis primeros años de adolescencia, me volví hacia el punk, el hardcore y el metal porque sentí que estas escenas eran las que tomaban toda la frustración y la ira y trataban de mejorarlas. Cuando comencé a cantar, estaba fuera de discusión que este era el camino que iba a elegir para mí.
No me considero un cantante de punk ni a nosotros mismos como una banda de punk, ya que mezclamos muchos elementos de casi todo tipo de géneros de rock. ¡Realmente creo que esto es lo que hace que el sonido sea único! Por otro lado, la banda ha cambiado mucho a lo largo de los años.

¿Qué sientes cuando expresas toda tu emoción, ya sea ira o alegría en una canción?
Shakey:
Ambos, a veces al mismo tiempo. En realidad, mis letras son bastante oscuras. Simplemente soy mucho mejor para expresar todos los sentimientos negativos en palabras en lugar de los positivos. Esto no significa que sea una persona triste, es solo la vibra que me hace escribir música y esa fue también la vibra que me hizo encontrar música.
¿Crees que el género está en declive hoy?
Shakey:
Bueno, creo que si quieres hacer algo con fines de lucro, definitivamente debes ignorar la música rock. Pero solo por ahora, solo por el momento. Si miras hacia atrás en el tiempo, la música rock siempre tuvo sus ondas y creo que estamos cerca del momento en que regresa. Por lo que veo, el mundo ha comenzado a retroceder nuevamente: los ricos se vuelven más ricos, los pobres se vuelven más pobres, la aceptación de la diversidad parece ir contra la pared, al menos en nuestra zona. La gente está triste, cabreada, reprimida. Especialmente la generación joven que ve claramente que este no es el mundo en el que quieren vivir. Todos necesitan una especie de "válvula" para dejar salir estos sentimientos negativos y convertirlos en algo en lo que puedan creer. Creo que el Rock la música es la respuesta para eso. Claro, no de la misma manera y no con el mismo estilo que en el pasado, pero reinventado a su manera.
¿Qué les dirías a las nuevas generaciones sobre este estilo y sobre tu banda Hellfreaks? Para los que no te han escuchado
Shakey:
Somos una banda que aprendió de su propia piel lo venenoso que puede ser mirar hacia atrás en el pasado, en lugar de mirar hacia el futuro. Cuando nos reinventamos en 2015, el objetivo principal era ignorar los límites del género, mezclar cosas inusuales, ser valientes e ignorar lo que los fans esperan de nosotros. Fue la mejor decisión que he tomado y no podría estar más feliz con la forma en que se nos presenta como banda en este momento. También en cuanto a las letras: de los cuentos de hadas de psychobilly, cambiamos a pensamientos honestos. Cada vez que leo un comentario sobre "¿Por qué ya no somos psicobiliares?", Simplemente pongo los ojos en blanco y pienso en lo triste que algunos están atrapados en el pasado.
Creo que eso es exactamente lo mismo que cuando la generación más joven siente que se enfrenta a los valores de la vieja escuela de la sociedad. El tiempo ha cambiado el mundo y tenemos que cambiar con él. Eso es lo que representa nuestra música.
Cuéntanos sobre tu álbum "God On The Run", ¿escribiste las canciones? ¿Y sobre qué tema se escribieron esas canciones con mucha energía y furia?
Shakey:
Las canciones ya no se escriben en la sala de ensayo, pero, por supuesto, las escribimos todos en una pequeña habitación frente a una computadora por nuestro bajista. Después de cierto punto, nuestro guitarrista y baterista también agregaron sus ideas, pero la raíz de todas las canciones vino de Gabi. Eso significa que la grabación real de las canciones solo ocurrió después de muchas demostraciones.
Soy bastante de la vieja escuela en lo que respecta a las letras: no puedo sentarme y averiguar lo que quiero escribir a propósito. Las ideas me encuentran al azar, por lo que siempre escribo 2-3 palabras o una línea en mi teléfono donde sea que esté en ese momento, de lo contrario, la idea se irá para siempre. Cuando se trata de la canción, miro mi tablero de ideas y selecciono una de estas ideas para trabajar. Cuando empiezo a trabajar en las palabras, necesito estar sola y no puedo escribir en forma digital, necesito tener un lápiz y papel en la mano, de lo contrario mi cerebro se bloquea.
GOTR se inspira líricamente en la imperfección. Se trata de nuestras propias imperfecciones y las de nuestro entorno. Se trata de la sensación de ahogarnos y mantenernos firmes para ganar la pelea al mismo tiempo. Es una mezcla de pensamientos honestos de forma vocal e instrumental. Fusionamos metal, punk, rock y tal vez incluso un poco de hardcore. Algo que parece imposible de categorizar a pesar de que sabemos que la mayoría de la gente solo NECESITA categorías para saber qué pensar de ello ... Pero nunca encajaremos y esta es una de nuestras mejores cualidades y eso es lo que queremos compartir con la audiencia: no se obligue a encajar. No importa cuál sea el tema.

¡Oh sí! ¡Pero no puedo revelar más en este momento!
