Persona Band is an alternative metal band from Tunisia with Jelena Dobric as vocal leader! His style combines the sound of modern metal with elements of symphonic metal, thrash and heavy riffs with synth effects and classical orchestration, creating the perfect base for intense and captivating vocal lines!

 

So! We go to the interview!

 

 

Greetings! Jelena thank you very much! To know about you! And Friends of the band

 

Tell us about you! Who is Jelena?

Jelena:

First of all, thank you for this interview, Jose! I’m a Serbian girl who moved to Tunisia a bit more than 4 years ago. I’m a pianist and a singer since my early age, and I couldn’t imagine myself being happy in life with doing something that’s not related to music in some way.

 

How you get interested in this genre musical?

Jelena:

It was gradual. I was surrounded with classical music when I was very young, but there was also ABBA, Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd… After that came Nirvana, Offspring, Metallica, Megadeth… And at the moment I discovered Rhapsody, Kamelot and Dream Theater, I realized that power/progressive metal is definitely my thing.

 

As the músic scene in Tunisia?

Jelena:

Mainstream here is some kind of pop/house/techno/hip-hop music, with or without oriental elements. Most of the new emerging Tunisian singers and bands follow this mainstream, and if you want to go out at night, you’ll mostly find places with DJs who mix something like this. It’s not easy for the rest of us who want to do something different, especially with our original songs, not metal or rock covers. Concerts of this type are usually organized only by enthusiasts who like this kind of music or the bands themselves.

 

As been your musical and vocal training?

Jelena:

I have master degree in piano performance from the University of Music in Belgrade, Serbia. While studying, I also had years of vocal training, mostly classical, but the usual operatic technique and style were never something that I really liked. It was very useful though, because that’s the base for everything else one might want to do with voice. Piano study wasn’t only playing piano, but it had a very complex background of studying music theory, history, harmony, form, solfeggio and other subjects, and it’s all very useful when we compose for the band.
 

What are your influences, groups or singers that influenced in you? In Metal and out Metal

Jelena:

There’s been a lot of classical music in my life, and my favorites change from period to period. I love early music (medieval, renaissance and baroque), but at the moment I’m mostly listening to 20th century composers like Sergei Prokofiev, Erik Satie, Gustav Mahler and others. Concerning metal genre, what I enjoy most are bands that are progressive/power oriented, like Leprous, Pain of Salvation (earlier albums), Kamelot, Dream Theater etc… Non metal related favorites would definitely be Queen and Kate Bush.
 

What are you doing offstage, hobbies?

Jelena:

I don’t have a lot of free time, I must admit that, and most of what I do is one way or another connected to music. But what I do when I catch some free moments and I choose not to do something music related, it’s mostly reading books, learning a new language (I’m still struggling with Tunisian hahhah :D), learning basics of photo and video editing, writing…

 

As was formed the band?

Jelena:

The band was formed in 2012, soon after I moved to Tunisia. It first started as a project between Melik Khelifa and me, and we spent some time just experimenting and composing for fun. After a while we decided to form and actual band.

What is the meaning of the band name?

Jelena:

It is based on psychological concept of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, and it stands for personality that one displays in public, as opposed to inner self. According to Jung, Persona is kind of „mask“ that one wears in everyday life, which helps in interaction with other people and conceals one’s true thoughts and feelings. We chose it because it’s what we experience when we compose and perform on stage: each song must be given its particular identity and therefore we must go through different emotions and states of mind that sometimes don’t really represent how we feel in that particular moment.

 

Who are the members of the band?

Jelena:

PERSONA are: Melik Khelifa – lead guitar; Yosri Ouada – guitars; Youssef Aouadi – drums; Walid Bessadok – keyboard; Nesrine Mahbouli – bass; and Jelena Dobric (me) – vocals.

 

What is the essence of Persona band, Heavy/ Alternative/Rock/Thrash Metal, what you want to share us?

Jelena:

Our essence are our personalities, musical and other influences we’re bringing into the band. They are different but sufficiently related, and they happen to meet just in the right places and in the right way so we can make music the way we do.
 

What can you tell us, about your album " ELUSIVE REFLECTIONS"?

Jelena:

Elusive Reflections has 10 songs, all describing different moods, emotions and states of mind. It is not conceptual, songs sometimes have similar topics, but they are all quite different musically. I think it’s best to leave it to listeners to form their own impression, because everything about music is always very subjective and relative.

 

Did you write the songs? Or? How was the inspiration?

Jelena:

Most of the song writing happens between Melik and me, and then we present it to the band during rehearsals. At that point each member contributes to the final form of the song and develops sections for his/hers instrument. It’s me who writes the lyrics, along with vocal melodies. We’re inspired by music we listen to, different people we encounter and situations we find ourselves in. In other words, inspiration is everywhere.

 

How was the production of the videoclip ‘Blinded’?  Why that song?

Jelena:

It wasn’t easy and it took us some time until we found the right team to work with. Many friends and people we know we were engaged in its making, and though the initial idea and most of the directing was ours (band’s), the realization wouldn’t be possible without the expertise of everyone who participated. “Blinded” was chosen because it was the song that somehow right away captured attention of most people who heard it, even if they weren’t metal music lovers. We found that interesting, and voilà J.

 

Will be other video clip soon?

Jelena:

Yes, it’s still in the post production, but we expect it to be ready beginning or mid April. It will be for the opening song from the album, “Somebody Else”.

 

Some Tour in the coming months? in Tunisia? in Europe?

Jelena:

There are several gigs planned in Tunis in the upcoming months. Nothing is fixed yet concerning Europe or other continents, because we’re still in the album promotion phase. But we should be focusing on that very soon and we hope to get a chance to play abroad this summer.

 

When to come at Latín América?

Jelena: Whenever we get a chance or an invitation, we’re ready! :D

Su estilo fusiona el sonido de metal moderno con elementos de Metal Sinfonico, Thrash y Riffs pesados con efectos de sintetizador y la orquestación clásica, creando la base perfecta para líneas vocales intensas y cautivadoras.

Háblanos un poco sobre ti. Quien es Jelena?

 

Antes que nada, quiero agradecerte por esta entrevista!

 

Soy una chica Serbia que se mudo hace 4 años a Túnez.

 

Pianista y cantante desde temprana edad. No me puedo imaginar siendo feliz haciendo algo que no tenga que ver con la música.

 

Como te interesaste en este género musical?

 

Se fue dando gradualmente. Crecí rodeada de música clásica desde muy joven, pero también escuchaba a grupos como: ABBA, Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin y Pink Floyd.

Después escuche a Nirvana, The Offspring, Metallica y Megadeth.

 

Hasta que descubrí a Rhapsody, Kamelot y Dream Theater, gracias a ellos me di cuenta de que el power metal y el progresivo eran lo mío.

 

Como describirías la escena musical en Túnez?

 

La corriente principal es una mezcla de pop, house, tecno y hip-hop, con ciertos elementos orientales.

 

La mayor parte de bandas y cantantes emergentes en Túnez siguen esta corriente.

Digamos que si sales en la noche, lo más probable es que encuentres muchos lugares con DJ’s que mezclen con estos géneros.

 

No es fácil para el resto de nosotros, los que queremos hacer algo diferente y en especial a los que trabajamos con canciones originales, nada de covers.

 

Los conciertos que reúnen a grupos como nosotros, son en su mayoría organizados por gente entusiasta del género o incluso por nosotros mismos.

 

Cuál ha sido tu entrenamiento musical y vocal?

 

Tengo una maestría en interpretación de piano de la Universidad de Música en Belgrade Serbia.

 

Mientras estudiaba, tuve años de entrenamiento vocal en su mayor parte de música clásica.

 

Sin embargo, la técnica y el estilo operístico nunca me gustaron.

 

Fue bastante útil aprenderlo, porque es la base para todo lo que quieras hacer con tu voz.

El estudio de piano no se trata solo de aprender a tocarlo, tiene también un complejo antecedente que tienes que estudiar.

 

Por ejemplo, teoría musical, historia, armonía, forma, solfeo y muchos temas más que resultan bastante útiles a la hora de componer para tu propia banda.

 

Cuáles son tus influencias musicales? Grupos y cantantes que te han influenciado, dentro y fuera del género metal.

 

Ha habido tanta música clásica en mi vida y también debo decir que mis favoritos van cambiando, dependiendo del periodo en el que estoy.

 

Me gusta mucho la música antigua (medieval, renacentista y barroca) pero actualmente, soy más de escuchar a exponentes del siglo 20 tales como: Sergei Prokofiev, Erik Satie, Gustav Mahler y muchos otros.

 

Hablando del género metal, las bandas que más disfruto son un poco de estilo progresivo, power y oriental. Bandas como: Leprous, Pain of Salvation (los primeros álbumes), Kamelot y Dream Theater.

 

Mis favoritos de otros estilos son Queen y Kate Bush.

 

Cuáles son tus hobbies?

 

No tengo mucho tiempo libre, pero debo admitir que casi todo lo que hago tiene que ver con la música.

 

En ocasiones cuando tengo tiempo libre y decido no hacer algo relacionado con la música, es cuando me pongo a leer libros, estudiar un nuevo idioma (aun tengo problemas con el tunecino hehe), aprendo las bases de la edición de video y foto, escribo…Muchas cosas!

 

Como se formó la banda?

 

La banda se formo en el año 2012, en cuanto me mude a Túnez.

 

Al principio todo comenzó como un proyecto entre Melik Khelifa y yo, pasábamos tiempo experimentando y componiendo por diversión.

 

Tiempo después decidimos crear una banda real.

 

Que significa el nombre de la banda?

 

Se basa en un concepto psicológico del psiquiatra Suizo Carl Jung.

Es sinónimo de personalidad que se muestra en público, en oposición al ser interior.

 

En palabras de Jung, ‘Persona’ es como un tipo de mascara que usamos en la vida diaria, la cual nos ayuda a interactuar con otras personas y oculta nuestros verdaderos pensamientos y sentimientos.

 

Lo elegimos porque es algo que experimentamos cuando estamos componiendo e interpretando en el escenario.

 

Cada canción tiene una personalidad propia y al interpretarlas atravesamos por distintos estados mentales y emociones, que en ocasiones no representan como nos sentimos realmente en ese momento.

 

Quienes son los miembros de la banda?

 

PERSONA está integrada por: Melik Khelifa – guitarra principal, Yosri Ouda – guitarras, Youssef Aouadi – batería, Walid Bessadok – teclados, Nesrine Mahbouli – bajo y finalmente, Jelena (yo) en la voz.

 

Cuál es la esencia de PERSONA? Que nos quieren transmitir?

 

Nuestra esencia son nuestras personalidades y las influencias musicales que cada uno le brinda a la banda.

 

Cada integrante es diferente entre sí, pero al mismo tiempo tenemos cosas en común.
Nos conocimos en el lugar ideal y de la manera ideal, para así poder crear música de la manera en la que lo hacemos.

 

Que puedes decirnos del álbum ‘ELUSIVE REFLECTIONS’?

 

Tiene 10 canciones, cada una describiendo diferentes emociones, humores y estados mentales.

 

No es tan conceptual, algunas canciones tratan temas similares pero son diferentes musicalmente.

 

Pienso que es mejor que la audiencia tenga su propia impresión, porque la música es muy subjetiva y relativa.

 

Tu escribes las canciones? Como es la inspiración?

 

Casi todas las canciones están escritas por Melik y por mí, después durante los ensayos se las mostramos al resto de la banda.

 

En ese punto cada integrante contribuye a darle forma a la canción y desarrolla la parte que le corresponde con su instrumento.

Soy yo la que escribe casi todas las letras, junto a las melodías vocales.

 

Nos inspiramos por la música que escuchamos, por la gente que conocemos y situaciones en las que estamos.

 

En pocas palabras, la inspiración esta por todas partes.

 

Como fue la producción de la canción ‘Blinded’? Porqué escogieron esa canción?

 

No fue fácil y nos tomo tiempo encontrar a las personas ideales con las cuales trabajar.

Muchos amigos y gente conocida se comprometieron con nosotros y nos ayudaron.  La idea inicial y casi la mayor parte de dirección fue nuestra, pero la realización no hubiera sido posible de no haber sido por todos aquellos que participaron.

 

Elegimos ‘Blinded’ porque de alguna manera, fue la canción que más le gusto a la gente al escucharla.

 

Incluso le gusto a gente que no le gustaba el metal, eso nos pareció interesante y voila!.

 

Habrá algún otro videoclip pronto?

 

Si lo habrá, pero aun esta en el proceso de postproducción.

 

Esperamos tenerlo listo para principios o mediados de Abril, será para la canción de apertura del álbum, ‘Somebody else’.

 

Harán algún Tour en los siguientes meses? Por Túnez o Europa?

 

Tenemos planeadas muchas giras por Túnez en los siguientes meses.

Sobre hacer una gira por Europa o algún otro continente, aun no hay nada confirmado por que seguimos en el proceso de promoción.

 

Pero espero que pronto nos concentremos en otras giras, para tener en donde tocar en verano.

 

Cuando vienen a Latinoamérica?

 

En cuanto tengamos oportunidad o nos inviten. Estamos listos!
