¿Who are Season of Ghosts?

According to singer / songwriter / mastermind Sophia Aslanides, Season of Ghosts “is a spiritually groundbreaking, intergalactic music project, dedicated to the love for the unseen and film soundtracks.” Released in 2014, the project’s official debut, “The Human Paradox”, came off as exactly that, serving up a brash mix of guitar riffs, harsh electronics, and compelling vocals through the eerie spectrum of a sci-fi, horror movie. Season Of Ghosts was definitely something different from the norm that spoke of huge potential, and the fanbase that followed Sophia in the aftermath of her split from Japanese trance metal act Blood Stain Child grew, finding deeper roots as time moved forward, thanks to a handful of live shows and subsequent video clips that were circulated and shared via social media.

In 2017 Season Of Ghosts created a new, unapologetic, in-your-face album, A Leap Of Faith. Between the creation of The Human Paradox and the birth of the new album, Sophia spoke out about the health issues that prevented her from advancing and creating. Everything that transpired those past years, weaved the lyrical theme of the new songs.

Hi! Sophia thank you! Very much for the interview with you!

Hi! It's an honour to be doing this interview with you guys!

¿How are you?

Really really busy, I don't sleep much lately, or I sleep weird hours because I'm working non-stop on a thousand different things. Music related and non-music related.

¿Where are you from Sophie?

Well, I was born in Venezuela, but I'm of Greek descent and I grew up in Thessaloniki, Greece.

You have an very nice voice, ¿Why you chose this musical style?

Thank you! I didn't really know I could sing until University, I didn't dare to think about it cos I found it so embarrassing! I chose this style because it reflects my personal musical preferences up to a point.

Tell us about Season of Ghosts, introduce us to Season of Ghosts band!

Season of Ghosts was meant to be my side project while I was in Blood Stain Child. I started the idea early 2012 with my Japanese friend, so by mid 2012 we'd decided we'd do this project together. Meanwhile I chose to leave Blood Stain Child, so Season of Ghosts became my main thing. Later on that friend gave up because he was unavailable for music in general at the time, so SoG became my solo project. After having suffered too much drama from band members in general, I wanted it to be a solo project with session members. So the first album "The Human Paradox" was exactly that. It was me and "Ghost Legion", the 3 session members.

Recently, Zombie Sam has become an integral part of Season of Ghosts, he contributes to the band a lot. On bass we have Paul Dark Brown and on drums we have Max Buell.

Tell us about the single ‘Surreal’, your new álbum will have the same style in sound and music?

Well, Surreal was a song by Fatal FE and he's known for being an electro music lover. I didn't choose the music style, I just went with the flow, with what he gave me as base to compose. The new album is not like Surreal at all, however Fatal made most keyboards for the album as a guest!

¿What’s the process that you use for writing songs?

I used to create everything alone and give them to the production team for development, but now we've found a better way to work. Sam comes up with chord progressions and after I approve them, we starts developing the song so I compose some basic melodies and keyboards that will shape the character of the song. We add bass,drums and most importantly more keyboards to it, before I start composing vocal lines and finally lyrics.

¿What kind of musical influences do you have Sophia? within the Metal scene

Within the metal scene...I love bands like the old Anathema, The Gathering, Katatonia, Sentenced, The Kovenant, Amorphis, Iron Maiden. Generally, I like melodic, dark, experimental metal and of course bands that combine electronics and metal. The Kovenant with Animatronic are the reason I got into electro-metal.

¿What does mean the name of your new álbum for you?

The new album is called "A Leap Of Faith". This album comes 4 years after the release of The Human Paradox and in the meantime many things changed in my life, in Sam's life, in our life together and we feel we've also changed as people. Or rather, that we've explored different aspects of ourselves. Sometimes, when worse comes to worst and you're exhausted by everything you decide you're gonna stop resisting and go with the flow. It doesn't mean you give up, it means that you learn how to float gracefully. Float and work towards your target, instead of spending your soul and your resources fighting and struggling, which only causes problems, pain and poisons the soul. When you learn how to practice faith, you learn how to float and trust the process, you reach a point where you close your eyes and you're already "there", you've reached your target. Without overthinking, you just make the jump. That's what "a leap of faith" means.

¿How did you choose the cover artwork? A Leap of Faith!

The new album aesthetics is minimal, so we chose a minimal cover, a minimal costume, simple, straightforward and super clear. Exactly like the album music and exactly like the lyrics. Everything is aligned with this theme.

¿How important is good album art, music, voice to you?

Everything is important. If you pay attention only to music and you have a great voice but you're terrible at presenting it to people, so you don't know how to dress, or manage your music affairs, or create a product that people can't buy, it's not gonna work. Also, if you throw a ton of money to have the best art, the most expensive costumes, equipment etc and your music sucks and you can't sing...it will work, but people won't remember it after a few years. It's like fast fashion. Season of Ghosts is not fast fashion. I create pieces of art that are timeless, that leave an impact, that aim to touch people's souls and tell them a story they won't forget. To tell a story successfully, you need to use sound, word, image...all carefully balanced and taken care of.

¿Do you have any upcoming shows?

We're planning new shows around the world as we speak!

¿What are the next steps for Season of Ghosts in this 2018?

We're releasing the new album in September, along with a second video. The first video is already available and it's called " A Place To Call Home".

¿Will you have a Tour in Latin America or in Europe?

It depends on how many fans ask for it! Whoever is reading this: write or talk to your local promoters and ask them to invite Season of Ghosts for shows! Only fans have the power to ask, it doesn't depend on the band!

Anything else you'd like to share with us?

Venezuela is the country I was born in and my family is close to South American culture. I personally have lots of respect for native american cultures and its people, so I'd love to get to know you and your beautiful countries very soon!

¿Quiénes son Season of Ghosts?

De acuerdo a la cantante / compositora / autora principal Sophia Aslanides, Season of Ghosts "es un proyecto de música intergaláctico, espiritualmente innovador, dedicado al amor por las bandas sonoras invisibles y cinematográficas". Lanzado en 2014, el debut oficial del proyecto, "The Human Paradox", salió exactamente como eso, sirviendo una mezcla impetuosa de riffs de guitarra, electrónicos duros y voces convincentes a través del espeluznante espectro de una película de terror de ciencia ficción. Season Of Ghosts fue definitivamente algo diferente de la norma que hablaba de un gran potencial, y la base de seguidores que siguió a Sophia después de su separación del trance metal japonés Blood Stain Child creció, encontrando raíces más profundas a medida que el tiempo avanzaba, gracias a un puñado de shows en vivo y subsecuentes video clips que fueron circulados y compartidos a través de las redes sociales.

¡Hola! Es un honor estar haciendo esta entrevista con ustedes!

¿Cómo estás?

Muy ocupada, no duermo mucho últimamente, o duermo horas extrañas porque estoy trabajando sin parar en miles de cosas diferentes. Relacionados con la música y no relacionados con la música.

¿De dónde eres de Sophie?

Bueno, yo nací en Venezuela, pero soy de ascendencia griega y crecí en Thessaloniki, Grecia.

Tienes una voz muy agradable, ¿por qué elegiste este estilo musical?

¡Gracias! Realmente no sabía que podía cantar hasta la Universidad, ¡no me atrevía a pensar en ello porque lo encontraba tan embarazoso! Elegí este estilo porque refleja mis preferencias musicales personales hasta cierto punto.

Cuéntanos sobre Season of Ghosts, ¡Preséntanos a la banda Season of Ghosts!

Season of Ghosts estaba destinado a ser mi proyecto secundario mientras estaba en Blood Stain Child. Comencé la idea a principios de 2012 con mi amigo japonés, por lo que a mediados de 2012 decidimos que haríamos este proyecto juntos. Mientras tanto elegí dejar Blood Stain Child, así que Season of Ghosts se convirtió en mi principal actividad. Más tarde ese amigo se dio por vencido porque no estaba disponible para la música en general en ese momento, por lo que SoG se convirtió en mi proyecto en solitario. Después de haber sufrido demasiado drama de los miembros de la banda en general, quería que fuera un proyecto en solitario con los miembros de la sesión. Así que el primer álbum "The Human Paradox" fue exactamente eso. Fuimos yo y "Ghost Legion", los 3 miembros de la sesión.

Recientemente, Zombie Sam se ha convertido en una parte integral de Season of Ghosts, contribuye mucho a la banda. En el bajo tenemos a Paul Dark Brown y en la batería tenemos a Max Buell.

Cuéntanos sobre el single 'Surreal', ¿tu nuevo álbum tendrá el mismo estilo en sonido y música?

Bueno, Surreal fue una canción de Fatal FE y es conocido por ser un amante de la música electro. No elegí el estilo de música, simplemente fui con la corriente, con lo que me dio como base para componer. ¡El nuevo álbum no es para nada surrealista, sin embargo, Fatal hizo la mayoría de los teclados para el álbum como invitado!

¿Cuál es el proceso que usas para escribir canciones?

Solía crear todo solo y dárselos al equipo de producción para el desarrollo, pero ahora hemos encontrado una mejor manera de trabajar. A Sam se le ocurren progresiones de acordes y después de aprobarlas, comenzamos a desarrollar la canción, así que compongo algunas melodías básicas y teclados que darán forma al personaje de la canción. Añadimos el bajo, la batería y, lo que es más importante, más teclados, antes de comenzar a componer líneas vocales y finalmente letras.

¿Qué tipo de influencias musicales tienes Sophia? dentro de la escena Metal

Dentro de la escena de metal... Me encantan las bandas como el antiguo Anathema, The Gathering, Katatonia, Sentenced, The Kovenant, Amorphis, Iron Maiden. En general, me gusta el metal melódico, oscuro, experimental y, por supuesto, las bandas que combinan electrónica y metal. El Kovenant con Animatronic es la razón por la que entré al electro-metal.

¿Qué significa el nombre de tu nuevo álbum para ti?

El nuevo álbum se llama "A Leap Of Faith". Este álbum llega 4 años después del lanzamiento de The Human Paradox y, mientras tanto, muchas cosas cambiaron en mi vida, en la vida de Sam, en nuestra vida en común y sentimos que también hemos cambiado como personas. O más bien, que hemos explorado diferentes aspectos de nosotros mismos. A veces, cuando lo peor llega a ser peor y estás agotado por todo lo que decidas, vas a dejar de resistirte e ir con la corriente. No significa que te rindas, significa que aprendes cómo flotar con gracia. Flote y trabajar hacia tu objetivo, en lugar de gastar tu alma y tus recursos luchando y luchando, lo cual solo causa problemas, dolor y envenena el alma. Cuando aprendes cómo practicar la fe, aprendes cómo flotar y confiar en el proceso, llegas a un punto donde cierras los ojos y ya estás "allí", has alcanzado tu objetivo. Sin pensar demasiado, solo haces el salto. Eso es lo que significa "un salto de fe".

¿Cómo elegiste la portada? ¡Un salto de fe!

La estética del nuevo álbum es mínima, por lo que elegimos una portada mínima, un disfraz mínimo, simple, sencillo y súper claro. Exactamente como la música del álbum y exactamente como la letra. Todo está alineado con este tema.

¿Cuán importante es el buen arte del álbum, la música, la voz para ti?

Todo es importante Si prestas atención solo a la música y tienes una gran voz, pero eres terrible presentándola a las personas, entonces no sabes cómo vestirte o administrar tus asuntos musicales, o crear un producto que la gente no puede comprar, no va a funcionar. Además, si arrojas una tonelada de dinero para tener el mejor arte, los disfraces más caros, el equipo, etc. y tu música apesta y no puedes cantar... funcionará, pero la gente no lo recordará después de unos años. Es como la moda rápida. Season of Ghosts no es una moda rápida. Creo piezas de arte que son intemporales, que dejan un impacto, que apuntan a tocar las almas de las personas y contarles una historia que no olvidarán. Para contar una historia con éxito, debes usar el sonido, la palabra, la imagen... todo cuidadosamente equilibrado y cuidado.

¡Estamos planeando nuevos shows en todo el mundo mientras hablamos!

¿Cuáles son los próximos pasos para Season of Ghosts en este 2018?

Lanzamos el nuevo álbum en septiembre, junto con un segundo video. El primer video ya está disponible y se llama "A Place To Call Home".

¿Tendrán un Tour en Latinoamérica o en Europa?

¡Depende de cuántos fanáticos lo pidan! Quien esté leyendo esto: ¡escribe o habla con tus promotores locales y pídeles que inviten a Season of Ghosts para espectáculos! Solo los fanáticos tienen el poder de preguntar, ¡no depende de la banda!

¿Algo más que quieras compartir con nosotros?

Venezuela es el país en el que nací y mi familia está cerca de la cultura sudamericana. Personalmente, tengo mucho respeto por las culturas nativas y su gente, ¡así que me encantaría conocerlos a ustedes y sus hermosos países muy pronto!
