All This Filth is an Australian band who released their latest album called “Misery Season” in 2019. Nowadays, they are doing the second leg of their promotional tour with Gutter Tactic. Darkzen Metal Magazine had the opportunity to talk with vocalist Brendan Preston. You can check it out!

 

First, thank you so much for this interview.

 

1. All This Filth has started their musical journey almost a decade ago having two full length album and EP. Can you tell us how ATF born?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

ATF was born in around late 2007, early 2008 when my previous band “Dissonant” sort of came to an end. The remaining members and I just kept going, changed the band name, wrote new songs and went in a different direction musically. Here we are, 12 years later, been through many line-up changes, I’m the only remaining original member, but we’re still here.

 

2. Why do you choose All This Filth as name for a band?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

“All This Filth” was the title of a “Dissonant” song. It was a song about looking around at all that’s wrong with the world and fighting against it. That’s kind of what this band stands for, fighting against the filth of the world. The world can be a terrible place and we need to make it better.

 

3. You have too many musical influences around the metal scene like industrial, trash, death, nü-metal and others and all of them are present in your sound. How those influences came up and how do you define your sound as band?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Basically I like many different types of heavy music. From Thrash to Industrial to Groove and Nü Metal to Hardcore and everything in between. In fact all of the guys in the band have varied influences. I’ve always liked the idea of combining our favourite elements to make something new and interesting. Just something we would like. In the beginning it was combining the Groove and aggression of Sepultura with the Industrial Metal stylings of Fear Factory and Chimaira. As the years have gone on we’ve added various influences including Hardcore. Keeps things interesting. We always like to keep the core of the Groove, the aggression and the hint of Industrial. It’s hard for us to describe our sound, I’d say “Industrial Groovecore”.

 

4. The band is presenting their latest work called Misery Season with a new line up. How are those changes influenced in the composing and recording process of this album?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Different people bring different influences and personalities to the mix, so it’s about capturing that when we record. Some people work differently to others so it’s about working out what works best for everyone. So all of that influences the music we make. That and what’s going on in our lives at the time. That’s why “Misery Season” sounds the way it does.

 

5. Misery Season is an album who is based on true story. Can you tell us a little more about it?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

“Misery Season” was a really hard album to write. It took a lot out of us and especially me personally. I have this theory I call “Misery Season”. Every now and again in our lives, at least every year for me personally I find, we go through really hard times. Either personal, financial, career wise, I mean it could be anything, an accident could happen, bad luck, depression, mental illness whatever it could be it leads to hard times. It usually comes and goes like a season.

 

Metaphorically that’s when the dark clouds gather and it rains on you and you go through the storm. I wanted to write an album about the hard times that test us all. About Misery Season. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, my life basically fell apart through a series of events which was complicated and probably partially caused by my own personal battles with depression and anxiety. A lot of things happened, relationships broke down, the band fell apart, my life fell apart and I was in terrible place mentally. I was suicidal and actually tried to take my own life twice, it’s only by some crazy luck that I’m still here.

 

Anyways, Misery Season is the story of that time in my life really. It was kind of intentional but it also sort of just came out that way. It’s about the struggles of life and persevering through to all. I hope people can see through all the pain in the songs and hopefully get something positive out of it. The album is quite dark but there is an underlying defiance and glimmer of hope in the album.

 

I heard the whole album and I think every song express too many emotions in a musical and lyric level…

 

Brendan ATF:

 

We always try to convey a feeling, emotion or message through our music and lyrics. Sometimes I go in with a plan of what I want to say, sometimes it just comes out that way naturally. I write everything straight from the heart and straight from my mind. Everything I write is my truth, it’s all I know how to do. It just has to be expressed. I use it as a sort of catharsis. I hope that by taking all of my pain and putting it on the record that it will help someone in some way. Get something positive out of all the negativity.

 

6. ATF participated in the WOA Metal Battle in your country. How do you consider is the australian metal scene nowadays in your point of view?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Yeah it was a great show, so many great bands from Western Australia, the level of quality and amount of amazing bands coming out of Western Australia is incredible. Same goes for Australia in general. There’s a lot of amazing bands in Australia that just don’t get the exposure around the rest of the world because we are so far away from everyone else haha! There is definitely a very strong underground scene in Australia, it definitely doesn’t get the media coverage it deserves, especially from the Australian mainstream media. i guess that’s just how it is though. Definitely a lot of bands around Australia worth checking out though.

 

7. The second part of Drown of Misery Tour has begun with some dates around your country with Gutter Tactic. How is the people response around Misery Season’s songs?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Yeah the second leg starts next week in NSW with Gutter Tactic. Definitely looking forward to that.

 

The response so far to the songs from “Misery Season” has been great. People love hearing them on record and seeing them played live. We hoped people would like the album but had no idea it would be received so well. A lot of people really connect with the songs on a personal level and that really means everything to me. I’ve had people say that our songs and my words have helped them through tough times on a fair few occasions and that is really awesome. I’m so glad people can get.

All This Filth es una banda australiana que lanzó su último álbum llamado "Misery Season" en 2019. Hoy en día, están haciendo la segunda etapa de su gira promocional con Gutter Tactic. Darkzen Metal Magazine tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con el vocalista Brendan Preston. ¡Puedes echarle un vistazo!

1. All This Filth ha comenzado su viaje musical hace casi una década con dos álbumes completos y un EP. ¿Puedes decirnos cómo nació ATF?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

ATF nació alrededor de finales de 2007, principios de 2008 cuando mi anterior banda "Dissonant" llegó a su fin. Los miembros restantes y yo seguimos adelante, cambiamos el nombre de la banda, escribimos nuevas canciones y fuimos en una dirección musical diferente. Aquí estamos, 12 años después, hemos pasado por muchos cambios de alineación, soy el único miembro original restante, pero todavía estamos aquí.

 

2. ¿Por qué elegir All This Filth como nombre para una banda?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

"All This Filth" fue el título de una canción de "Dissonant". Era una canción sobre mirar a su alrededor todo lo que está mal en el mundo y luchar contra él. Eso es lo que esta banda representa, luchando contra la inmundicia del mundo. El mundo puede ser un lugar terrible y necesitamos mejorarlo.

 

3. Tienen demasiadas influencias musicales en la escena del metal como industrial, trash, death, nü-metal, entre otras, y todas están presentes en su sonido. ¿Cómo surgieron esas influencias y cómo definen su sonido como banda?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Básicamente me gustan muchos tipos diferentes de música pesada. De Thrash a Industrial a Groove y Nü Metal a Hardcore y todo lo demás. De hecho, todos los chicos de la banda tienen influencias variadas. Siempre me ha gustado la idea de combinar nuestros elementos favoritos para hacer algo nuevo e interesante. Solo algo que nos gustaría. Al principio combinaba el Groove y la agresión de Sepultura con los estilos de Metal Industrial de Fear Factory y Chimaira. A medida que pasaron los años, hemos agregado varias influencias, incluyendo Hardcore. Mantiene las cosas interesantes. Siempre nos gusta mantener el núcleo del Groove, la agresión y la indirecta de Industrial. Para nosotros es difícil describir nuestro sonido, yo diría "Industrial Groovecore".

 

4. La banda presenta su último trabajo llamado Misery Season con una nueva formación. ¿Cómo se influyen esos cambios en el proceso de composición y grabación de este álbum?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Diferentes personas aportan diferentes influencias y personalidades a la mezcla, por lo que se trata de capturar eso cuando grabamos. Algunas personas trabajan de manera diferente a otras, por lo que se trata de determinar qué funciona mejor para todos. Entonces, todo eso influye en la música que hacemos. Eso y lo que está sucediendo en nuestras vidas en ese momento. Es por eso que "Misery Season" suena como suena.

 

5. Misery Season es un álbum basado en una historia real. ¿Puedes contarnos un poco más al respecto?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

"Misery Season" fue un álbum realmente difícil de escribir. Nos tomó mucho de nosotros y en especial, a mí personalmente. Tengo esta teoría que llamo "Temporada de miseria". De vez en cuando en nuestras vidas, al menos cada año, personalmente, encuentro que pasamos por tiempos realmente difíciles. Ya sea personal, financiero o profesional, quiero decir que podría ser cualquier cosa, podría suceder un accidente, mala suerte, depresión, enfermedad mental, lo que sea que conduzca a tiempos difíciles. Suele aparecer y desaparecer como una temporada.

 

Metafóricamente es cuando las nubes oscuras se juntan y llueve sobre ti y atraviesas la tormenta. Quería escribir un álbum sobre los tiempos difíciles que nos ponen a prueba a todos. Sobre la temporada de miseria. Desafortunada o afortunadamente, dependiendo de cómo lo veas, mi vida básicamente se vino abajo a través de una serie de eventos que fueron complicados y probablemente causados ​​en parte por mis propias batallas personales con la depresión y la ansiedad. Pasaron muchas cosas, las relaciones se rompieron, la banda se vino abajo, mi vida se vino abajo y estaba en un lugar terrible mentalmente. Estaba suicida y en realidad traté de quitarme la vida dos veces, solo por una suerte loca todavía estoy aquí.

 

De todos modos, Misery Season es la historia de ese momento en mi vida realmente. Fue algo intencional, pero también salió de esa manera. Se trata de las luchas de la vida y la perseverancia para todos. Espero que la gente pueda ver a través de todo el dolor en las canciones y con suerte sacar algo positivo de ello. El álbum es bastante oscuro, pero hay un desafío subyacente y un rayo de esperanza en el álbum.

 

Escuché todo el álbum y creo que cada canción expresa demasiadas emociones en un nivel musical y lírico...

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Siempre tratamos de transmitir un sentimiento, emoción o mensaje a través de nuestra música y letras. A veces entro con un plan de lo que quiero decir, a veces simplemente sale de esa manera naturalmente. Escribo todo directamente desde el corazón y directamente desde mi mente. Todo lo que escribo es mi verdad, es todo lo que sé hacer. Solo tiene que ser expresado. Lo uso como una especie de catarsis. Espero que al tomar todo mi dolor y ponerlo en el registro, ayude a alguien de alguna manera. Obtenga algo positivo de toda la negatividad.

 

6. ATF participó en la WOA Metal Battle en su país. ¿Cómo consideras que es la escena australiana del metal hoy en día desde tu punto de vista?

 

Brendan ATF:  

 

Sí, fue un gran espectáculo, con tantas grandes bandas de Australia Occidental, el nivel de calidad y la cantidad de bandas increíbles que salen de Australia Occidental es increíble. Lo mismo ocurre con Australia en general. Hay muchas bandas increíbles en Australia que simplemente no se exponen en el resto del mundo porque estamos muy lejos de todos los demás, ¡jaja! Definitivamente hay una escena underground muy fuerte en Australia, definitivamente no obtiene la cobertura mediática que merece, especialmente de los principales medios de comunicación australianos. Supongo que así es como es. Sin embargo, definitivamente vale la pena visitar muchas bandas en Australia.

 

7. La segunda parte de Drown of Misery Tour ha comenzado con algunas fechas en su país con Gutter Tactic. ¿Cómo responde la gente a las canciones de Misery Season?

 

Brendan ATF:

 

Sí, la segunda vuelta comienza la próxima semana en Nueva Gales del Sur con Gutter Tactic. Definitivamente estoy ansioso por eso.

 

La respuesta hasta ahora a las canciones de "Misery Season" ha sido excelente. A la gente le encanta escucharlos en el disco y verlos tocar en vivo. Esperamos que a la gente le guste el álbum, pero no teníamos idea de que sería recibido tan bien. Mucha gente realmente se conecta con las canciones a nivel personal y eso realmente significa todo para mí. He hecho que la gente diga que nuestras canciones y mis palabras les han ayudado en momentos difíciles en algunas ocasiones y eso es realmente increíble. Estoy muy contento de que la gente pueda tener.
