Sechem was formed in Madrid at the end of 2010, thanks to the fact that Marta Sacri flutist in training, has great knowledge about the Middle East, specifically Egypt. The idea is to make known the Egyptian culture with stories that moved us to the Egyptian world through music mixing metal and oriental.

Hello friends Ikena and Marta, how are you? A pleasure to have this interview with you and your musical group.

Ikena:

​

Hello, equally, a pleasure.

​

Thank you for your interest in our project!

​

How are you doing with your new álbum "Disputes With My Ba"? How was the impact with the audience?

​

Ikena:

​

It is having a very good reception, people are really enjoying it and it makes us very happy.

​

Marta Sacri:

​

We are delighted! All this making music makes sense when someone appears and tells you that you have enjoyed our album or our live.

​

Ikena: How was your integration with the band? Tell us a little about you!

​

Ikena:

​

Well, it was one of these things that happens by chance. Four years ago I was in a group that I had with my friends (Hammer of Strong), and had been at the same time in another group (Perfect Dose) but I had left it recently and, although I was not looking for it, I was open to the possibility of a new project And when I was offered the possibility of doing a test with the band, I said "Well ok!" Haha. And the rest is history.

​

 

Ikena: for you what are your musical influences outside of metal?

​

Ikena:

​

I don't know if I would call it influences, but I greatly admire Florence + The Machine, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and when I was younger, I loved Shakira (her first works). And I like musicals a lot.

​

Besides this musical influence, do you have any other style that you like or would like to experience?

​

Marta Sacri:

​

Well, I think that if you listen to the album, you realize that we are a very eclectic band and that we like to experiment with a multitude of styles, although the connecting thread is Oriental Metal. Anyway, I have a thorn that I want to try to get out for the next album, and that is to experiment with flamenco.

​

It has a very special sound and i like the strength in the guttural. How was the production of this álbum and especially the lyrics?

​

Marta Sacri:

​

The production is carried out together with Yossi Sassi, the founder of the legendary band Orphaned Land. Pepe Raull, guitarist, and I composed a series of songs for the band and, afterwards, each one made the changes he considered necessary. Then we recorded a model of all these subjects to get an idea of ​​how they were going to sound and modify things. Yossi Sassi gave us some guidelines from Israel, but it was in the studio itself that we gradually shaped the songs on the álbum.

​

With respect to the letters, I always choose the subject and the ideology before beginning even to compose, for what little modifications there were in the letters that I wrote. Finally I asked Ikena to write "Sanehat" and "Horus & Seth" because his style fit better with what I was looking for the lyrics.

​

Ikena:

​

As far as I'm concerned, it's been composing some of the lyrics. Marta already had a theme in mind for the album in general, and for each song in particular. So he told me about the song going and I investigated if it was a story or a story and based on that I composed the lyrics.

​

The álbum how do you consider it, atmospheric, with a story or each song is very independent?

​

Marta:

​

All our work always has a common thread. In the case of "Disputes With My Ba", the theme is based on popular texts from ancient Egypt. Each one deals with a particular thing but, at the same time, they tell a global story: how, through the writings of antiquity you can empathize with human beings who lived thousands of years ago in a society completely different from yours.

 

Marta: How was the mix of sounds between this folk from the Middle East with heavier and symphonic sounds?

​

Marta:

​

It's part of our identity. Although we do Oriental Metal, some of us grew up in the era in which Symphonic Metal was booming. Epica or Xandria are two bands that at the time had symphonic songs of very oriental cut, so it is a genre that is part of us, just like what happens to Orphaned Land with Progressive Metal.

​

Why did you choose 'Horus & Seth (Official Video)' as the debut video of your álbum? Good song by the way!

​

Marta:

​

Thank you very much! Horus & Seth is a catchy theme that gives a lot of play. In addition, it shows a little of all the influences that we have: it begins very cañero and with very oriental melodies; then it passes to a more modern metal; has some touches of progressive and symphonic, and ends with a very Folk Metal.

​

Will there be any new video? And if so, what would it be?

​

Ikena:

​

Yes, on March 16 we recorded a new vídeo during our presentation concert, it will be the first single that we released: "An Epic Journey To Yam", with the collaboration of Yossi Sassi.

​

Have you thought about doing some duet with another metal group? Like which?

​

Ikena:

​

I would love it, but for now we have nothing planned.

​

The Artwork of the álbum that means? And what is the song that is most important to you?

​

Marta:

​

The cover is related to the title of the álbum: "Disputes With My Ba". In it we can see a mummy (although well awake) and behind an African stork, which is the symbol of Ba. In all the artwork we will see that the presence of birds predominates.

​

"Disputes With My Ba" is a tribute to a classic Egyptian text, "Disputes of a man and his Ba", in which a tired man argues with his Ba (a part of the body in Egyptian mythology, something like " personality "of the human being) on whether it is worth continuing with his life. The Ba tries to convince him that, although we have episodes of suffering, the good things in life ultimately matter much more.

​

Some tour very soon? And would you like to come to Latin América? In México!

​

Ikena:

​

Yes, we have been to four cities in Germany before, and we will be in Salamanca, Vitoria, Madrid, Budapest, Bratislava, Rome and Murcia. And about Latin América, I would love to play in my land, México.

​

Sechem se formó en Madrid a finales de 2010, gracias a que Marta Sacri flautista en la formación, tiene grandes conocimientos sobre Oriente Medio, en concreto Egipto. La idea es dar a conocer la cultura egipcia con historias que nos trasladasen al mundo egipcio a través de la música mezclando metal y oriental.

​

Hola, igualmente, un placer.

Cómo les va con su nuevo álbum "Disputes With My Ba"? Qué tal fue el impacto con la audiencia?

​

Ikena:

​

Está teniendo muy buena acogida, a la gente le está gustando mucho y nos alegra muchísimo.

​

Marta Sacri:

​

¡Estamos encantados! Todo esto de hacer música cobra sentido cuando aparece alguien y te comenta que ha disfrutado de nuestro disco o de nuestro directo.

​

Ikena: ¿Cómo fue tu integración con la banda? Cuéntanos un poco de ti!

​

Ikena:

​

Pues fue una de éstas cosas que pasan por casualidad. Hace cuatro años estaba en un grupo que tenía con mis amigas (Hammer of Strong), y había estado a la vez en otro grupo (Dosis Perfecta) pero lo había dejado hacía poco y, aunque no lo buscaba, estaba abierta a la posibilidad de un nuevo proyecto. Y cuando se me ofreció la posibilidad de hacer una prueba con la banda, dije “Pues ok!” Jaja. Y el resto es historia.

​

Ikena: para ti ¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales fuera del metal?

​

Ikena:

​

No sé si lo llamaría influencias, pero admiro muchísimo a Florence + The Machine, Lady Gaga, Madonna, y cuando era más joven, me encantaba Shakira (sus primeros trabajos). Y me gustan mucho los musicales.

​

Además de esta influencia musical, tienen algún otro estilo que les gusta o quisieran experimentar?

​

Marta Sacri:

​

Bueno, creo que si escuchas el álbum te das cuenta de que somos una banda bastante ecléctica y que nos gusta experimentar con multitud de estilos, aunque el hilo conector sea el Oriental Metal. De todos modos, yo tengo una espinita que quiero intentar sacarme para el próximo disco, y esa es la de experimentar con el flamenco.

​

Tiene un sonido muy especial y me agrada la fuerza en el gutural ¿Cómo fue la producción de este álbum y sobre todo la letra?

​

Marta Sacri:

​

La producción la llevamos a cabo junto a Yossi Sassi, el fundador de la mítica banda Orphaned Land. Pepe Raull, guitarrista, y yo compusimos una serie de temas para la banda y, después, cada uno hizo los cambios que consideró necesarios. Luego grabamos una maqueta de todos estos temas para hacernos una idea de cómo iban a sonar e ir modificando cosillas. Yossi Sassi nos dio desde Israel algunas directrices, pero fue en el propio estudio cuando fuimos poco a poco dando forma a las canciones del disco.

​

Con respecto a las letras, siempre escojo la temática y el ideario antes de comenzar incluso a componer, por lo que pocas modificaciones hubo en las letras que escribí. Finalmente le pedí a Ikena que escribiera “Sanehat” y “Horus & Seth” porque su estilo encajaba mejor con lo que yo buscaba para la letra.

​

Ikena:

​

En lo que a mí respecta, ha sido componer alguna de las letras. Marta tenía ya una temática en mente para el disco en general, y para cada canción en particular. Así que me decía sobre que iba la canción y yo investigaba si era un cuento o una historia y en base a eso componía la letra.

​

El álbum cómo lo consideran ustedes, atmosférico, con una historia o cada canción es muy independiente?

​

Marta:

​

Todos nuestros trabajos siempre tienen un hilo conductor. En el caso de “Disputes With My Ba”, la temática está basada en textos populares del antiguo Egipto. Cada uno trata sobre una cosa en particular pero, a la vez, cuentan una historia global: el cómo, a través de escritos de la Antigüedad puedes simpatizar con seres humanos que vivieron hace miles de años en una sociedad completamente distinta a la tuya.

​

Marta: ¿Cómo fue la mezcla de sonidos entre este folk de medio oriente con sonidos más pesados y sinfónicos?

​

Marta:

​

Es parte de nuestra identidad. Aunque hacemos Oriental Metal, algunos de nosotros nos hemos criado en la época en la que el Metal Sinfónico estaba en auge. Epica o Xandria son dos bandas que en su momento tuvieron canciones sinfónicas de corte muy oriental, por lo que es un género que forma parte de nosotros, al igual que le pasa a Orphaned Land con el Metal Progresivo.

​

Porque escogieron ‘Horus & Seth (Official Video)’ como vídeo debut de su álbum? Buena canción por cierto!

Marta:

​

¡Muchas gracias! Horus & Seth es un tema pegadizo que da mucho juego. Además, muestra un poco de todas las influencias que tenemos: empieza muy cañero y con melodías muy orientales; luego pasa a un metal más moderno; tiene algunos toques de progresivo y de sinfónico, y acaba con un aire muy de Folk

Metal.

​

Habrá algún nuevo vídeo? Y si es si cual sería?

​

Ikena:

​

Si, el día 16 de Marzo grabamos un nuevo vídeo durante nuestro concierto de presentación, será del primer single que sacamos: “An Epic Journey To Yam”, con la colaboración de Yossi Sassi.

​

Han pensado hacer algún dueto con algún otro grupo metalero? Cómo cuál?

​

Ikena:

​

Me encantaría, pero por ahora no tenemos nada pensado.

​

El Artwork del álbum que significa? Y cuál es la canción que sea más importante para ustedes?

Marta:

​

La portada tiene relación con el título del disco: “Disputes With My Ba”. En ella podemos ver una momia (aunque bien despierta) y detrás una cigüeña africana, que es el símbolo del Ba. En todo el artwork veremos que predomina la presencia de pájaros.

​

“Disputes With My Ba” es un homenaje a un clásico texto egipcio, “Disputas de un hombre y su Ba”, en el que un hombre cansado discute con su Ba (una parte del cuerpo en la mitología egipcia, algo así como la “personalidad” del ser humano) sobre si merece la pena continuar con su vida. El Ba intenta convencerle de que, aunque tenemos episodios de sufrimiento, las cosas buenas de la vida al final importan mucho más.

​

Algún Tour en puerta? Y les gustaría venir a Latino América? En México!

​

Ikena:

​

Si, hemos estado anteriormente en cuatro ciudades de Alemania, y estaremos en Salamanca, Vitoria, Madrid, Budapest, Bratislava, Roma y Murcia. Y sobre latino américa, me encantaría tocar en mi tierra, México.

​
