Gaby Koss was born in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, and always sang in school a lot! at age 10 he began playing the piano with a teacher each week and visited the local weekly church choir. He studied Music and Education at the LMU (Ludwig-Maximilian-University) in Munich, Beforhand she took private lessons singing with the vocal masters like Dietrich Schneider (who taught well known professional singers and famous tölzer Knabenchor) and now for many years he is with his teacher and tenor Saverio Suárez Ribaudo in Munich, who is very experienced and also works with a lot of professional singers

Hello! my friend! thank you very much!

 

How are you? 

 

HI thank you for the chance to give this interview. I am doing fine. Loads of things to do , loads of projects and wishes to fullfill.

 

It is a pleasure to hear from you friend! You have a beautiful voice! How was your vocal training?

 

I have a vocal teacher since very long and it is necessary to improve so I still have a vocal teacher. I changed them to find out who is best for me. Now I have one what has a lot of soloists from Operahouses, yes they are still having a vocal teacher and they are still having singing lessons to improve and be corrected as with the classical technic you can do so many wrong things. For me as I do a lot of other vocal styles and technics I can get mixed up very easely so I need controll from outside as I think I do it right but oneself is mostly not really able to have real controll as you do not haer yourself as others do. This is normal because of your physical constilation.

 

I did read the story of your album 'Diskelion' how was the story behind of name of álbum, can you tell us? 

 

Actually I wanted to do a Solo Album as I have many fans in the metal scene from Haggard and Equilibrium. When a guitar player from England Tom Harris sent me his song I thought it was great and I asked him if he could write more songs and if he wants to do a whole album with me. He agreed and so he was composing and I put some harmony vocals on it too plus one song I did the whole melody. I decided to ask some great musicians I know to help me with drums – ex drummer of Equilibrium Manuel di Camillo and also the former Cantus Lunaris Bass Player Sebastian Kister, for flute you can hear on some tracks I asked Albert Dannenmann from Blackmores Night and for Viola I asked Daniel from Nota profana who is also a member of the wordl famous classical Simon Bolivar

 

Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. I also thought of asking some of my singer friends to sing on the album but then I thought of one with who I wanted to do a double female fronted metal band, I asked her but it did not work out as she was very demanding and behind my back she was telling not nice things so I decided tto quit working with her also in the future and to stick on my first idea taking a couple of my friends. On stage I asked Kerstin Bischof (Ex Xandria) to join me and if she does not have time Ida Elena or Julie from Kosmik Vortex will jump in. :-)

 

Which was the main idea? Which means the name of the Album?

 

At first we thought of Call my name and I thought of Triskolian as I wanted to go on only as double female fronted metal band. And Triskolian was meant to be a double female fronted project.

 

The musicians invited to collaborate with you? How was the experience of working with them?

 

It was great to have so many different great voices on the cd. I was working with them allready at guests at concerts or also I was asked to sing with them on  CD.

 

I knew, that you were going to sing with another female Singer, What happened with her?

 

It was like I was saying above, she decided to come to Germany, I gave her shelter for many weeks and payed everything for her and later she lived first without having to pay anything at my appartment and when I asked for rent she was angry at me and told to my musicians very bad insulting things about me. So it was very fast that I decided that I can not work with a person acting  bad behind my back plus criticiszing me with everything I do also she never was into a job like managin/markting/organizing etc.

 

So I decided to break up any contact and search for nice people to work with.

 

Tell us wich was the experience of singing with great voices! as Kerstin Bischof (ex-Xandria) Soule of Diabulus in Musica, Ida Elena of Cantus Lunaris and Bare Infinity, Cosmic Vortex deletoile Julie and Hannah Wagner Saeldes Sanc?

 

I always sang and made music with great voices as I love to sing duets. And also in Cantus Lunaris where we have many voice we always have duet, terzetts or quartets of singing.

Before Cantus I sang many classical concerts with collegues in Churches or halls or in private opera productions and also with the countertenor Samuel Santana from Spain who is also member of Cantus Lunaris.

 

With the ones on Cd as I said I allready had concerts, or sessions or recordings. Some voices fit maybe better together depending on the frequences the different voices have but it is also a matter of taste. :-)

 

What you're trying of to trasmit with this album, 'Diskelion'?

 

Actually it was my dream to do a Solo CD but also I alsways wanted to have a double female fronted metal band.. and never found one so I just fullfilled my dream and I hope this and Cantus Lunaris will go on. With Cantus Lunaris we also will go metal but with more singers even..

 

What means the cover of your album?

 

The Cover was designed by Ryo Ishido a great designer who is really a world leading artist in his creations. I actually am not really into some metal designes like drawings as Nightwish or Equilibrium have them, I tend to different styles. So I was thinking taking actually a angel pic of mine but as a photographer did those pics he wanted to have many hundreds of Euro for the rights, so I took my second intention to give a profile pic of mine and let Ryo create a mask on it. He did a great job for the booklet.

First I asked somebody else to do it but she did not have time to finish so as Ryo asked me to sing on his track I asked him to make my booklet ;-)

 

It is a great album! good production, in your own words is a continuous or atmospheric album? 

 

The prodcution is really great, as it was producted at the Helionstudios what is also producing the Equilibrium Albums. And Rene from Equilibrium was even so kind to work on the sounds of the guitars in the Diskelion production.

                                                                                         

I know also, that you have other bands, is difficult to have several musical styles or are similar in some of them band?

 

Similar is just that all of them have to do with Metal but every metal band is different.

Nota profana is orchestral symphonic death black metal

Diskelion is double female fronted symphonic metal with Rock influence (alla Nightwish)

Dominia is gothic, melodic doom metal

Cantus Lunaris will be Renaissacne-Celtic-Rock-Metal style

 

A ‘’Excellent album’’ that means for you? elements that could have, voice, voices, musicians, covert art or production?

 

I am not sure if it is an excellent album, it was discribed in reviews like that.

But as the musicians are really great, the prodcution and the song composing (every song has a  melody-hook what goes right into the ear and stays)! and the booklet art  I think it is a very high quality product normally band can do after a couple cds as you need a lot of know how and experiences  or composer, musicians and producer to make a real great album on which almost every song is great. That is why sometimes albums can last years to really make a good quality product out of it with composition, production and so on..

 

Is there some video clip of this great album 'Diskelion'?

 

Until now there is only one song on youtube : Remember sorrow - it is the name of the album also. But until now it is not a real video yet we hope when we get a label, what will be very hard as normally labels nowadays do not take bands anymore what have not allreay a lot of fans and have done gigs also when the product is great  - they think of earning money right away. Nowadays bands have to inviest years and thousands of Euros for a CD and for concerts and tours before they get a chance at a good label.

Hola amiga, es un gusto saber de ti. Como estas?

 

Hola, gracias a ti por esta entrevista. Estoy muy bien. Con muchas cosas por hacer, muchos proyectos y deseos que cumplir.

 

Tienes una hermosa voz. Cuál es tu entrenamiento vocal?

 

Tengo un profesor desde hace tiempo, siempre es necesario mejorar así que aun estudio con él. Cambio de profesor para saber cuál es el indicado para mí.

Hay muchos solistas que trabajan en casas de opera que aún tienen profesores y toman clases para mejorar y ser corregidos. Por que en la técnica clásica siempre puedes cometer muchos errores.

Yo manejo muchos estilos vocales y técnicas, puedo mezclarlos con facilidad por eso necesito de control externo. Yo podría pensar que lo hago bien pero uno no se puede escuchar así como lo hacen los demás.

 

Leí la historia de tu álbum Diskelion, pero dinos cuál es la historia detrás de su nombre?

 

En realidad quería hacer un álbum solista, como tengo muchos fans en la escena metalera desde Haggard hasta Equilibrium.

Un guitarrista de Inglaterra llamado Tom Harris, me envió su canción y me gustó mucho, le pregunté si podía escribir más y si le gustaría hacer un álbum completo conmigo. Estuvo de acuerdo y estuvo componiendo para mí, yo hice la armonía vocal y toda la melodía.

Decidí pedir ayuda a los bateristas que conozco, como el ex baterista de Equilibrium, Manuel di Camillo y también pedí ayuda al antiguo bajista de Cantus Lunaris, Sebastian Kister.

Para la flauta pueden escuchar en ciertas canciones que pedí ayuda a Alber Dannenmann de Blackmores night y para la viola pedí ayuda a Daniel de Nota profana, quien también es miembro de la ya famosa Orquesta clásica de la juventud Simón Bolívar de Venezuela.

También pensé en pedirles ayuda a mis amigas vocalistas, pensé en una en especial con la que quería formar una banda de dos vocalistas femeninas al frente.

Le pregunté pero no funcionó, ella está muy ocupada y además me entere de que hablaba a mis espaldas. Decidí dejar de trabajar con ella y me hice a la idea de trabajar con el resto de mis amigos.

En el escenario pedí ayuda de Kerstin Bischof (ex Xandria) y si ella no tuviera el tiempo sería Ida Elena o Julie de Kosmik vortex.

 

Cual fue la idea principal? Que significa el nombre del álbum?

 

Primero pensé en llamarlo como yo, después pensé en Triskolian, la idea original era para la banda con dos vocalistas femeninas al mando.

 

Como fue tu experiencia al colaborar con estos artistas?

 

Fue increíble, tener tantas voces variadas en el cd. Ya había trabajado con ellos, como invitados a los conciertos o incluso algunos ya me habían invitado a cantar con ellos.

 

Supe que ibas a cantar con otra cantante, que sucedió con ella?

 

Como dije anteriormente. Ella vino a Alemania, le di asilo durante semanas y pagué todo por ella. Fue un buen tiempo en el que no tuvo que pagar nada, después en mi apartamento le pedí ayuda con la renta y se enojó, después le dijo a mis músicos muchas cosas horribles e insultos hacia mi.

Así decidí que no puedo trabajar con una persona con una actitud tan mala, especialmente con alguien que habla a mis espaldas, criticándome todo el tiempo.

Ella nunca trabajó en marketing, ni dirigiendo ni sabe controlar una situación así. Rompí todo contacto con ella y me dediqué a buscar gente agradable con quien trabajar.

 

Háblanos de tu experiencia al cantar acompañada de grandes voces! así como Kerstin Bischof (ex Xandria), Soule (Diabulus in Musica), Ida Elena(Cantus Lunaris), Bare infinity y Cosmic Vortex de letolle.

 

Siempre he cantado y creado música, acompañada de grandes voces. Me encantan los duetos y en Cantus Lunaris siempre había duetos, tríos y cuartetos.

Antes de Cantus, canté en varios conciertos clásicos en iglesias y salones, incluso en producciones privadas de ópera. También con el contratenor Samuel Santana de España, quien también es miembro de cantus Lunaris.

Algunas voces encajan a la perfección, depende de la frecuencia entre voces pero también depende mucho del gusto de cada persona.

 

Que tratas de transmitir con el álbum Diskelion?

 

En realidad siempre soñé con un álbum solista y también quería formar una banda con dos cantantes femeninas al mando, pero aún no he encontrado a la compañera adecuada.

Así que por el momento me encuentro cumpliendo mi sueño solista y espero que Cantus Lunaris siga bien.

 

Qué significado tiene la portada del álbum?

 

Fue diseñada por Ryo Ishido, un famoso diseñador que es conocido a nivel mundial por sus creaciones. En realidad no se mucho de diseños metaleros así como los dibujos de Nightwish y Equilibrium. Mi estilo es diferente.

Había pensado en poner una foto de un ángel pero gastaríamos cientos de euros por los derechos! así que pensé en una foto mía. Le di a Ryo la foto y el creó una máscara en ella, hizo un estupendo trabajo.

La idea principal era que otra persona hiciera la portada pero no pudo, entonces cuando Ryo me pidió que cantar en una de sus canciones, yo le pedí que diseñara mi portada.

 

Este álbum es una gran producción. En tus propias palabras dinos, es un álbum atmosférico o continuo?

 

La producción es increíble y fue producido en los estudios Helion en donde también se hicieron los álbumes de Equilibrium.

Rene, miembro de Equilibrium fue muy amable al ayudarnos con los sonidos de la guitarra en la producción de Diskelion.

 

Sé que tienes otras bandas, es difícil manejar tantos estilos?

 

Cada banda metalera es diferente. Nota profana es una banda de death black metal y orquesta sinfónica.

Diskelion es una banda con dos vocalistas femeninas, es metal sinfónico con influencia rock (estilo Nightwish).

Dominia es gótica, doom metal melódico.

 

Cantus lunaris es Metal renacentista céltico.

 

Que compone un álbum excelente para ti? Que elementos, voz, música o producción?

 

Si los músicos están bien, la producción y la composición de canciones (cada canción tiene un gancho que entra al oído y permanece), entonces todo esto conforma un excelente disco.

Siento que para que una banda pueda lograr un buen material, uno de calidad, necesita haber sacado ya dos álbumes, se necesita de mucha experiencia para lograr que cada canción del álbum sea magnífica.

Es por eso que uno tarda tanto en hacerlo

 

Habrá algún videoclip para este álbum?

 

Hasta ahora solo hay una canción en youtube: Remember sorrow. Aún no hemos realizado un vídeo real pero esperamos hacerlo cuando tengamos una marca apoyándonos.

Es muy difícil hoy en día conseguir una marca, ellos quieren que tengas muchísimos fans y que hayas estado en muchas giras, por que quieren ganar dinero contigo.

Las bandas tienen que invertir años y miles de euros para un cd y para un tour, antes de que una marca las contrate.
