The project was founded by the guitarist and orchestrator Vynce Leff in early 2007, already well known in the progressive sphere having produced several successful albums for the British label Cyclops Records. After recruiting the band members, a first EP "Daughter Of The Night" was recorded less than 6 months from the band's inception. It got instant acclaim from reviewers and music fans around the world, as well as several awards and plaudits (Best French Band 2008 - Metalsymphonique.com, Best EP - HeavyLaw.com, etc).
They enter the studio in 2017 again to record their 4th album, also released by Scarlet Records on 6th April 2018 : "AS TIME TURNS TO DUST" And this 2021 they leave us a super album! Of Wonders and Wars
Hello Marie! Thank you very much for this opportunity to have this interview with you! Welcome!
Marie:
Hello Jose, hello everybody. Thank you for this interview.
How have you and Vincent been? I hope you are in good health
Marie:
Oh quite well thank you. Like everyone else, we have to face the pandemic crisis. But we are lucky to live in a rich and social country, where we can vaccinate and we have enough to eat, be safe, take care of our children. Whyzdom's members and families are safe and that's the most important. This is not the case all around the world. I feel privileged. This crisis made us think about what we really want to share with our fans, so we wrote this new album in a different way, to share more, to give more of what we really are. Sincerity first. We needed to refocus on the most important and that's why this album is more direct. It's a reflect of our hearts.
How was it for you in 2020? With this Pandemic
Marie:
We had to adapt, recording separately at home, thanks to internet! The video clips were shot during the rare moments we could meet for real, between two lockdowns. The team was absolutely fantastic, ready and motivated and Vynce gave a lot of his time and energy, working on the music and the video.
On a more personal side of life, I work as a social worker in a psychiatric hospital for children and this pandemic was terrible. I don't know if I can bear this much longer: children and families near chaos, a lot of suffering and violence. I was not prepared to witness all of this and it has actually a very negative impact on my own health right now.
Now moving on to the musical field! Have your musical tastes changed a bit?
Marie:
Not that much. I still listen to power and heavy metal and I am curious to hear new albums of the genre.
During 2020 or 2019 began the production of this new album of Of Wonders and Wars?
Marie:
During 2019, we met and discussed about what we wanted to create. We then shared our work with each othes and Vynce began to write the first songs. The fire of Notre Dame in Paris was a first shock and he has to express about it, like if our world was falling down to sand. It was the starting point of the new album.
What were the musical and production challenges of this new album for the creation?
Marie:
Everything was difficult with pandemic! We live in different places in France, so meeting each other wasn't easy. So thank you internet and technology! Vynce had to write, and assemble our forces and our talents to arrange everything in the best possible way. He is not only the leader but also the conductor of the project, musicaly, visually and humanly. He offered all the support we needed to give the best of ourselves for this album.
For you Marie, in the vocal part were there any challenges also for the new album?
Marie:
Not exactly a challenge, one of the most important point of the album is that we decided that I would use my lyrical voice more often. It's a genre in which I feel very comfortable since it's my main vocal style. It's a change compared with previous albums and I think it gives a new color to Whyzdom. I'm really happy with that. I also recorded all the choir voices and this was great but a lot of work. Vynce also made me improvise and that was a challenge for me.
What are your favorite songs from your new album?
Marie:
I don't have any favorite song but I love the choir in Stonehenge. I listen to it when I feel bad and I find it very soothing: "when the time has come upon our hearts lost in the mist of time, what can we do now to change the curse of humankind?"
Did you write any of the songs?
Marie:
No I don't and it is ok for me, I'd rather work on how convey emotion and ideas to the listeners. Vynce is better than me for writing in english anyway!
The album has a great cover, the sphinx of giza from egypt, what relationship does this cover have with the theme of the album?
Marie:
Thank you for the compliment. The cover was made by a french designer Pierre-Alain D. It shows the travel we do in this album all around the world and time and the fall of humanity. That's why there is a mix between an ancient still mysterious monument and science-fiction elements.
Why did you choose the song of Notre Dame for the video clip?
Marie:
It was very logical, because it was the starting point for us in the writing of the album. Moreoever, Paris is part of our identity, and we like to show it in our videos. In Fly Away, we showed the Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe. Showing Notre Dame is somehow a logical transition between "As Time Turns To Dust" and "Of Wonders And Wars".
I guess there will be a new video clip?
Marie:
Yes Yes Yes! And it is ready. It was made for the song Pyramids. I hope you enjoy. I think many will find it surprising, and may not even recognize me! I have Vynce to thank for the amazing work on these video clips.
Have you already thought about a Tour in France? Or for now will it be for another year?
Marie:
We did focus a lot on the album those last months, but we miss the stage so we are thinking indeed about doing some concerts, as soon as possible and in the places we can. There still is a lot of uncertainty with venues of course, with Covid.
Any live on a social network for all fans
Marie:
Regis proposed a video and we started a cover, but were not motivated enough to really finish it. Live on the internet is so boring compared with real live. To be true, this is not our thing.
Any surprise will Marie have for us later?
Marie:
The next video clip may surprise you! I hope you enjoy. So stay tuned with the single's release. I can not wait!
What other surprises does Whyzdom have for us?
Marie:
In this world of chaos, with the split of a lot of bands all around in the Symphonic metal genre, it's already a good thing to still be here and continue to make that music with all our heart. We are proud to still be alive as a band. Then, who knows what's next ? Gigs ? New video ? I hope we can still surprise you a lot in the years to come.
Anything else you would like to share with us Marie?
Marie:
Take care of yourself, be yourself, I hope we can meet on stage soon, that's my wish.

El proyecto fue fundado por el guitarrista y orquestador Vynce Leff a principios de 2007, ya muy conocido en el ámbito progresivo habiendo producido varios álbumes de éxito para el sello británico Cyclops Records. Después de reclutar a los miembros de la banda, se grabó un primer EP "Daughter Of The Night" en menos de 6 meses desde el inicio de la banda. Obtuvo elogios instantáneos de críticos y fanáticos de la música de todo el mundo, así como varios premios y aplausos (Mejor Banda Francesa 2008 - Metalsymphonique.com, Mejor EP - HeavyLaw.com, etc.).

Marie:
Hola Jose, hola a todos. Gracias por esta entrevista.
¿Cómo han estado Vincent y tú? Espero que estén bien de salud
Marie:
Oh, muy bien gracias. Como todo el mundo, tenemos que afrontar la crisis pandémica. Pero tenemos la suerte de vivir en un país rico y social, donde podemos vacunarnos y tenemos suficiente para comer, estar seguros, cuidar a nuestros hijos. Los miembros y las familias de Whyzdom están a salvo y eso es lo más importante. Este no es el caso en todo el mundo. Me siento privilegiada. Esta crisis nos hizo pensar en lo que realmente queremos compartir con nuestros fans, así que escribimos este nuevo disco de una manera diferente, para compartir más, para dar más de lo que realmente somos. La sinceridad primero. Necesitábamos volver a centrarnos en lo más importante y por eso este disco es más directo. Es un reflejo de nuestros corazones.
¿Cómo te fue en 2020? Con esta pandemia
Marie:
Tuvimos que adaptarnos, grabando por separado en casa, ¡gracias a internet! Los videoclips fueron filmados durante los raros momentos en los que pudimos encontrarnos de verdad, entre dos encierros. El equipo fue absolutamente fantástico, listo y motivado y Vynce dio mucho de su tiempo y energía, trabajando en la música y el video.
En el aspecto más personal de la vida, trabajo como trabajadora social en un hospital psiquiátrico para niños y esta pandemia fue terrible. No sé si podré soportar esto por mucho más tiempo: niños y familias cerca del caos, mucho sufrimiento y violencia. No estaba preparada para presenciar todo esto y, de hecho, tiene un impacto muy negativo en mi propia salud en este momento.
¡Pasemos ahora al campo musical! ¿Han cambiado un poco tus gustos musicales?
Marie:
No mucho. Todavía escucho power y heavy metal y tengo curiosidad por escuchar nuevos álbumes del género.
Durante 2020 o 2019 comenzó la producción de este nuevo álbum de Of Wonders and Wars?
Marie:
Durante 2019, nos conocimos y discutimos sobre lo que queríamos crear. Luego compartimos nuestro trabajo con los demás y Vynce comenzó a escribir las primeras canciones. El incendio de Notre Dame en París fue un primer golpe y tiene que expresarlo, como si nuestro mundo se estuviera cayendo a la arena. Fue el punto de partida del nuevo álbum.
¿Cuáles fueron los desafíos musicales y de producción de este nuevo álbum para la creación?
Marie:
¡Todo fue difícil con la pandemia! Vivimos en diferentes lugares de Francia, por lo que vernos no fue fácil. ¡Así que gracias internet y tecnología! Vynce tuvo que escribir y reunir nuestras fuerzas y nuestros talentos para organizar todo de la mejor manera posible. No solo es el líder, sino también el director del proyecto, musical, visual y humanamente. Ofreció todo el apoyo que necesitábamos para dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos para este álbum.
Para ti, Marie, en la parte vocal, ¿hubo algún desafío también para el nuevo álbum?
Marie:
No es exactamente un desafío, uno de los puntos más importantes del álbum es que decidimos que usaría mi voz lírica con más frecuencia. Es un género en el que me siento muy cómoda ya que es mi estilo vocal principal. Es un cambio en comparación con álbumes anteriores y creo que le da un nuevo color a Whyzdom. Estoy muy feliz con eso. También grabé todas las voces del coro y fue genial, pero con mucho trabajo. Vynce también me hizo improvisar y eso fue un desafío para mí.
¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas de tu nuevo álbum?
Marie:
No tengo ninguna canción favorita, pero me encanta el coro de Stonehenge. Lo escucho cuando me siento mal y lo encuentro muy reconfortante: "cuando ha llegado el momento sobre nuestros corazones perdidos en la niebla del tiempo, ¿Qué podemos hacer ahora para cambiar la maldición de la humanidad?"
¿Escribiste alguna de las canciones?
Marie:
No, no lo hago y está bien para mí, prefiero trabajar en cómo transmitir emociones e ideas a los oyentes. ¡Vynce es mejor que yo para escribir en inglés de todos modos!
El álbum tiene una gran portada, la esfinge de giza de egipto, ¿Qué relación tiene esta portada con el tema del álbum?
Marie:
Gracias por el cumplido. La portada fue realizada por un diseñador francés Pierre-Alain D. Muestra los viajes que hacemos en este álbum por todo el mundo y el tiempo y la caída de la humanidad. Es por eso que hay una mezcla entre un monumento antiguo todavía misterioso y elementos de ciencia ficción.
¿Por qué elegiste la canción de Notre Dame para el videoclip?
Marie:
Fue muy lógico, porque fue el punto de partida para nosotros en la escritura del álbum. Además, París es parte de nuestra identidad y nos gusta mostrarlo en nuestros videos. En Fly Away, mostramos el Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, la Torre Eiffel, el Arco de Triunfo. Mostrar Notre Dame es de alguna manera una transición lógica entre "As Time Turns To Dust" y "Of Wonders And Wars
¿Supongo que habrá un nuevo videoclip?
Marie:
¡Si si si! Y está listo. Se hizo para la canción Pyramids. Espero que lo disfruten. Creo que muchos lo encontrarán sorprendente, ¡y tal vez ni siquiera me reconozcan! Tengo que agradecer a Vynce por el increíble trabajo en estos videoclips.
¿Has pensado ya en un Tour en Francia? ¿O por ahora será un año más?
Marie:
Nos centramos mucho en el álbum esos últimos meses, pero echamos de menos el escenario, así que estamos pensando en hacer algunos conciertos, lo antes posible y en los lugares que podamos. Todavía hay mucha incertidumbre con las sedes, por supuesto, con Covid.
Algún directo en una red social para todos los fans!
Marie:
Regis propuso un video y comenzamos una portada, pero no estábamos lo suficientemente motivados para terminarlo. Vivir en Internet es tan aburrido en comparación con la vida real. Para ser verdad, esto no es lo nuestro.
¿Alguna sorpresa nos tendrá Marie más tarde?
Marie:
¡El próximo videoclip quizás te sorprenda! Espero que lo disfruten. Así que al tanto con el lanzamiento del sencillo. ¡No puedo esperar!
¿Qué otras sorpresas nos depara Whyzdom?
Marie:
En este mundo de caos, con la división de muchas bandas en el género del metal sinfónico, ya es algo bueno estar todavía aquí y seguir haciendo esa música con todo nuestro corazón. Estamos orgullosos de seguir vivos como banda. Entonces, ¿quién sabe qué sigue? Eventos ? Nuevo video ? Espero poder sorprenderte mucho en los próximos años.
