Black Lilium is a German melodic progressive metal band formed in 2014. The band became involved in the process of composing and recording their debut album entitled "Dead Man’s Diary." Although its release was made last year in streaming, their official presentation that includes the physical version of this album will be until January 31, 2020.

Beast in the backseat

 

It is the song that opens the album. Characterized by a strong rhythmic base to the beat of the keyboard, drums and some electronic elements, Felix Hochkeppel's voice play brings freshness and dynamism, although it is based on the melodic progressive metal they experiment with other darker sounds.

 

Paragon of imperfection

 

String instruments mixing with the piano that evoke melancholy, although it seems to break with the rhythmic structure generated in his previous song as it advances, it acquires strength as the keyboard speed increases and ends with the drums. The structure of the songs at the lyric level interweave a story. A song that stands out for the instrumental part that is well complemented by the vocal part.

 

Demon in disguise

 

The drums are the dominant instrument in this song to the beat of the guitars. Felix Hochkeppel plays with different voice ranges where the story of a woman you fall in love with and falls into her game is presented as a narrative. The chorus is extremely catchy, and you'll want to sing along with the song.

 

Start all over

 

A series of guitar riffs open this song accompanied by the drums and some electronic elements playing with the bases of the alternative metal. A dark and melodic song that refers to the problems that arise in couple relationships where their vocalist evokes a series of emotions such as anger or frustration with his interpretation.

 

Never

 

With a faster pace compared to his previous songs does not clash with the style developed throughout the album. The melodic interpretation of his singer is simply masterful, he can use different voice ranges and evoke different sensations to the listener, giving variety to the band's sound. I can imagine the audience singing “you will never” in a live concert.

 

Walls around my soul

 

I could say the most interesting part of the album begins on this song, since the band has defined their identity at the lyrical and musical level without demeriting the previous songs because they also bring versatility to this musical production. Characterized by the very marked chords of the bass and the keyboard, it is accompanied by the voice of their vocalist combined with some electronic elements providing freshness and modernity.

 

Everything I am

 

When I first heard this album, this song completely caught me. With a dark theme at the lyrical level that addresses the existential crisis at the end of a relationship, Felix Hochkeppel's interpretation is simply masterful because it denotes a series of feelings such as despair and anger. Musically, the combination of musical instruments creates a harmony that lays the foundations of a melodic rock that plays with the progressive and alternative creating a versatile and fresh musical proposal.

 

The ones you made us

 

This song enters directly with the vocal part accompanied by the instrumental part having some continuity with “Everything I am”. It is a rhythmic song, but at certain moments it presents chords that emulate a rock ballad with a catchy chorus that will remain etched in your head.

 

My purpose

 

The most representative song of the album and that essentially presents the sound of the band. The lyrics of the song continue with this dark theme whose interpretation is quite catchy from the first verse and where each of the musical instruments shines with its own light. It is a fast and rhythmic song that will capture the listener's attention from beginning to end.

 

Dead Man’s Diary

 

The song that gives title to the album that raises a farewell letter to the people around us. This ballad presents a variety of sounds influenced by the progressive metal that stands out at a technical level regarding vocal and musical interpretation.

 

Ghosts without a voice

 

With this song the album is finished, and it could not have been in the best way. A song that presents different harmonies and that I imagine singing at the end of a concert while still dancing or jumping. The keyboards and bass acquire prominence without neglecting the other musical instruments, the vocal performance pleases because it has not lost throughout the album.

 

My Recommendation:

 

Black Lilium is presented to the world with an album full of energy, freshness and versatility. Their musical proposal is interesting to present melodic, progressive and alternative rock influences. It is an album that catches you from start to finish not only for vocal performance, also for the drastic changes of sound that capture the listener's attention and for its catchy choirs that will make you sing and dance without stopping.

Black Lilium es una banda alemana de metal progresivo melódico formada en 2014. La banda se involucró en el proceso de composición y grabación de su álbum debut que lleva por título “Dead Man’s Diary”. Aunque su lanzamiento se realizó el año pasado vía streaming, su presentación oficial que contempla la versión física del álbum será a partir del 31 de enero de 2020.

Beast in the backseat

 

Es la canción con la que se da apertura al álbum. Caracterizada por una fuerte base rítmica al compás del teclado, batería y algunos elementos electrónicos, el juego de voces que realiza Felix Hochkeppel le aporta frescura y dinamismo, aunque se base es el metal progresivo melódico experimentan con otros sonidos más oscuros.

 

Paragon of imperfection

 

Instrumentos de cuerda al compás del piano que evocan a la melancolía, aunque pareciera romper con la estructura rítmica generada en su canción anterior a medida que avanza va adquiriendo fuerza conforma aumenta la velocidad del teclado y remata con la batería. La estructura de las canciones a nivel lírico entreteje una historia. Una canción que destaca por la parte instrumental que bien se complementa con la parte vocal.

La batería es el instrumento dominante en esta canción al compás de las guitarras. Felix Hochkeppel juega con diferentes rangos de voz donde se presenta a manera de narrativa la historia de una mujer de la cual te enamoras y caes en su juego. El estribillo es sumamente pegadizo y querrás cantarlo a la par de la canción.

 

Start all over

 

Una serie de riffs de guitarra dan apertura a esta canción acompañada por la batería y algunos elementos electrónicos jugando con las bases del metal alternativo. Una canción oscura y melódica que refiere a las problemáticas que se presentan en las relaciones de pareja donde su vocalista evoca una serie de emociones como enojo o frustración con su interpretación.

 

Never

 

Con un ritmo más acelerado a comparación de sus canciones anteriores no desentona con el estilo desarrollado a lo largo del álbum. La interpretación melódica de su cantante es simplemente magistral puede emplear diferentes rangos de voz y evocar diferentes sensaciones al oyente aportándole variedad al sonido de la banda. Puedo imaginarme al público cantando “you will never” en forma de coro en un concierto en vivo.

 

Walls around my soul

 

Podría decirse que la parte más interesante del álbum se encuentra a partir de esta canción, pues la banda ha definido su identidad a nivel lírico y musical sin demeritar las canciones anteriores pues también aportan versatilidad a esta producción musical. Caracterizada por los acordes tan marcados del bajo y el teclado, se acompaña con la voz de su vocalista combinada con algunos elementos electrónicos aportándole frescura y modernidad.

 

 

Everything I am

 

Cuando escuché este álbum por primera vez, esta canción me atrapó por completo. Con una temática oscura a nivel lírico que aborda la crisis existencial al término de una relación, la interpretación de Felix Hochkeppel es simplemente magistral pues denota una serie de sentimientos como la desesperación y la ira. Musicalmente, la combinación de los instrumentos musicales crea una armonía que sienta las bases de un rock melódico que juega con el progresivo y alternativo creando una propuesta musical versátil y fresca.

 

The ones you made us

 

Esta canción entra directamente con la parte vocal acompañada de la parte instrumental teniendo cierta continuidad con “Everything I am”. Es una canción rítmica, pero en determinados momentos presenta acordes que emulan a una balada rock con un estribillo pegadizo que se quedará grabado en tu cabeza.

 

My purpose

 

La canción más representativa del álbum y que presenta en esencia el sonido de la banda. Las letras de la canción continúan con esta temática oscura cuya interpretación es bastante pegadiza desde el primer verso y donde cada uno de los instrumentos musicales brilla con luz propia. Es una canción rápida y rítmica que captará la atención del oyente de principio a fin.

 

Dead man’s diary

 

La canción que da título al álbum que plantea una carta de despedida a las personas que nos rodean. Esta balada presenta una variedad de sonidos influenciados por el metal progresivo que destaca a nivel técnico en lo que concierne a interpretación vocal y musical.

 

Ghosts without a voice

 

Con esta canción se finaliza el álbum y no pudo haber sido de la mejor manera. Una canción que presenta diferentes armonías y que imagino cantando al término de un concierto sin dejar de bailar o saltar. Los teclados y el bajo adquieren protagonismo sin dejar de lado a los demás instrumentos musicales, la interpretación vocal agrada pues no ha perdido a lo largo del álbum.

 

Mi Recomendación:

 

Black Lilium se presenta ante el mundo con un disco lleno de energía, frescura y versatilidad. Su propuesta musical es interesante al presentar influencias del rock melódico, progresivo y alternativo. Es un álbum que te atrapa de inicio a fin no solo por la interpretación vocal, sino por los cambios drásticos de sonido que captan la atención del oyente y por sus coros pegadizos que te harán cantar y bailar sin parar.

 

Calificación: 10/10.
