Hello, my friend! Thank you so much for hearing about you and your music! How have you been? What do you tell us about yourself? Who is Marianna?
Vesssna:
Hello from Russia! Thank you, things are fine. I am Marianna, the leader of Vesssna, this is my project. I am the author of music and lyrics, and I also sing and play the guitar. In terms of style, we can be described as gothic metal, but with a certain amount of progressive and even folk.
What does the name of your band mean?
Vesssna:
Vesssna is my nickname. Actually, the word "Vesna" means Spring, but Russian people are generally very prone to multiplying consonants, so this word — vesssna with three s's — isn't so rare among the nicknames of gothic Russian girls and even among brand names.
What are your hobbies?
Vesssna:
Basically, all my hobbies have become work. I love music and work as a guitar teacher, and I also love cosmetics and everything connected with it, and have been professionally doing makeup for a couple of years now. Recently, I began to enjoy clothes stylists' channels. But it's probably fair to say that my hobby is to take a break from all this, but it turns out very rarely :)
What are your musical influences? Rock, Metal, or something else?
Vesssna:
I've always listened to very different types of music. It all started with classic rock and my learning to play the guitar. Then I started listening to a lot of gothic and doom music, and then quite often some progressive stuff. I'm not attached to specific genres, so everything I listen to probably somehow influences my creativity. My favorite band is Diorama, and it's electro. And among gothic bands with female vocals, Flowing Tears is closest to my liking, both in terms of music and energy. There are a few local bands like the "Оргия Праведников" that have also influenced me, primarily because I know them personally and respect them a lot.
Do you have a favorite vocalist?
Vesssna:
There are many vocalists that I like, but Shirley Manson (Garbage) and Torben Wendt (Diorama) will probably always be my favorites. I can't help but mention Agnete M. Kirkevaag (Madder Mortem) as well.
What is the theme of your music, and what inspires you to compose and write?
Vesssna:
For the most part, of course, my lyrics and the whole concept are quite typical for gothic: loneliness, some very bitter personal experiences about sad love, and other common silly stuff. A lot about the path of a person, a kind of lone wolf, which I probably always have been. About beloved people who inspire me. And the last album — "Звери и Чудища" — was generally devoted to the theme of cruelty, violence, and my desperate nonacceptance of all this.
What is your career as a vocalist and musician? Why this musical genre in particular?
Vesssna:
I started learning to play the guitar when I was 14, first in some private rock school, and then for a couple more years, I studied with one of the best teachers in Russia. I became interested in gothic at the age of 17, and then I began to try to form my own band and write music. A few years later, I already played in a more or less decent performing doom metal band, but there was a problem — there were both male and female vocal parts, but the vocalists did not stay long. Then the guys asked me to try. Before that, I had never sung at all. It was difficult. At first, I went to a pop vocal teacher who thought that my voice was a low contralto, which is not the case, and because of that, I started having big problems with my voice. Everything got much better when I went to study classical singing. At first, privately, and then even graduated from a music school. And still, sometimes study with my teacher from there. It took me a long time to figure out how to build vocal lines in my songs and what works for me and what doesn't. But I can't say that I use opera singing in my compositions. It is rather a mixture of an operatic and ordinary human voice. I don't really like classical music and everything pretentious, so I try to sing "simpler", and sometimes deliberately rougher.
Before Vesssna, I had a band Fright Night (gothic rock). I also participated in the projects of my keyboardist Marina Felis: Mea Vita and "Вечность Небытия".
Are you working on any new singles, EPs, or music videos?
Vesssna:
Yes, we are working on a new EP right now, and hopefully, we will soon release another video, which will be a sequel to our last one, "Жизнь Взаймы".
Any complete album in a project?
Vesssna:
I'm trying not to make long-term plans for now. So, I think the EP format is the most optimal solution.
Do you have some important dates in your country to introduce yourself?
Vesssna:
Here you can "introduce yourself" at some event dedicated to an important date only if you play pop or pop-rock or know someone important. I lost interest in such things a long time ago and try to promote my work more via the Internet and find interested people there — this is no less effective than participating in concerts.
What do you say to your fans in Russia? Any news these months?
Vesssna:
There will be a "Russian Gothic Fest" in Moscow at the beginning of June, where we will perform. It's great that there is such an event, and that it is gaining momentum and getting bigger every year. And we hope to please you with another video in the coming months.
What is your opinion of the current rock and metal scene in your country?
Vesssna:
I feel like listeners have become more active in going to concerts and more actively supporting local bands on social networks in the last year and a half. Of course, this is partly because foreign artists do not come to us. Or maybe people finally realized that among our bands there are many interesting ones. There are a lot of entertaining concerts held in Moscow and other cities. But as for the major festivals, for the most part, these are either bike fests, folk events, or very mainstream pop-punk/pop-rock. I don't fully understand the viewpoint of most Russian bands, that it's more important to perform as much as possible meanwhile, their studio recordings are made at a fairly amateur level. Some care about the quality of content, music, photos, and videos, but there are few of them. Also, there's an encouraging tendency of many bands who used to sing in English to switch to Russian. Before, most performers believed they could gain some popularity abroad by becoming clones of Nightwish or HIM, but now it has become clear that you can get world fame due to your uniqueness, as Theodor Bastard did, for example.
Anything else you want to share with us?
Vesssna:
I want to say that musicians in Russia are dealing with a lot now because of the political situation: we cannot run ads on Facebook and Instagram, and we cannot use PayPal and withdraw money from Bandcamp. The main issue is not the money, be they damned, but the fact that the number of ways to promote yourself has decreased significantly. Especially for artists who don't work with any labels, but promote their music themselves, as I always did. And, well, there is an obvious reluctance to have business with Russians, and sometimes I get very unpleasant responses to my promotional emails. But at the same time, I am glad that this is not everywhere, and many music editors in different countries understand that it is necessary to separate politics and music. So I simply want to say that I will be grateful to the listeners for any repost and any distribution of our work, as this is very important right now!

¡Hola desde Rusia! Gracias, las cosas están bien. Soy Marianna, la líder de Vesssna, este es mi proyecto. Soy el autor de música y letras, y también canto y toco la guitarra. En cuanto al estilo, podemos calificarnos de gothic metal, pero con cierta dosis de progresivo e incluso folk.
¿Qué significa el nombre de tu banda?
Vesssna:

¿Cuál es tu carrera como cantante y músico? ¿Por qué este género musical en particular?
Vessna:
Empecé a aprender a tocar la guitarra cuando tenía 14 años, primero en una escuela privada de rock, y luego, durante un par de años más, estudié con uno de los mejores profesores de Rusia. Me interesé en el gótico a la edad de 17 años y luego comencé a tratar de formar mi propia banda y escribir música. Unos años más tarde, ya tocaba en una banda de doom metal más o menos decente, pero había un problema: había partes vocales tanto masculinas como femeninas, pero los vocalistas no se quedaban mucho tiempo. Entonces los chicos me pidieron que probara. Antes de eso, nunca había cantado en absoluto. Fue dificil. Al principio fui a un profesor de pop vocal que pensaba que mi voz era de contralto bajo, que no es el caso, y por eso empecé a tener grandes problemas con mi voz. Todo mejoró mucho cuando fui a estudiar canto clásico. Al principio, en privado, y luego incluso se graduó de una escuela de música. Y aún así, a veces estudio con mi profesora de allí. Me tomó mucho tiempo descubrir cómo construir líneas vocales en mis canciones y qué funciona para mí y qué no. Pero no puedo decir que use el canto de ópera en mis composiciones. Es más bien una mezcla de una voz humana común y operística. Realmente no me gusta la música clásica y todo lo pretencioso, así que trato de cantar "más simple" y, a veces, deliberadamente más áspera.
Antes de Vesssna, tenía una banda Fright Night (rock gótico). También participé en los proyectos de mi tecladista Marina Felis: Mea Vita y "Вечность Небытия".
¿Estás trabajando en nuevos singles, EP o videos musicales?
Vessna:
Sí, estamos trabajando en un nuevo EP en este momento y, con suerte, pronto lanzaremos otro video, que será una continuación de nuestro último, "Жизнь Взаймы".
¿Algún álbum completo en un proyecto?
Vessna:
Estoy tratando de no hacer planes a largo plazo por ahora. Entonces, creo que el formato EP es la solución más óptima.

Vessna:
Habrá un "Festival gótico ruso" en Moscú a principios de junio, donde actuaremos. Es genial que exista un evento así, y que esté ganando impulso y creciendo cada año. Y esperamos complacerlos con otro video en los próximos meses.
¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre la escena actual del rock y el metal en tu país?
Vessna:
Siento que los oyentes se han vuelto más activos yendo a conciertos y apoyando más activamente a las bandas locales en las redes sociales en el último año y medio. Por supuesto, esto se debe en parte a que los artistas extranjeros no vienen a nosotros. O tal vez la gente finalmente se dio cuenta de que entre nuestras bandas hay muchas interesantes. Hay muchos conciertos entretenidos en Moscú y otras ciudades. Pero en cuanto a los principales festivales, en su mayor parte son festivales de bicicletas, eventos folclóricos o pop-punk/pop-rock muy mainstream.
