KOSM is a progressive metal band originally from Vancouver BC, Canada. Their musical influences are bands like Mastodon, Tool and Gojira. They released their new EP titled "Eyes on the Inside" published on June 28th and include five songs who can show the groups’s musical evolution in the lastest months.

 

This material is the first one who had the collaboration of all their members in the composition process with a heavier and concise sound can be distinguished in their melodies taking as inspiration the Bloodborne video game, in comparison to their predecessor "Cosmonaut" published last year and from which they take back passages from HP Lovecraft in their lyrics.

The first song included in this EP is titled "Yharnam" and shows the versatility of Jessie Grace’s voice using clean and guttural notes without any difficulty reminded us a little bit to The Agonist. This song begins with a chord in the bass executed by Michael 'Pastrami' Mastracci and this one talks about the place where Bloodborne video game is developed characterized by its Victorian architecture and in which the inhabitants have been victims of a strange endemic disease.

 

A powerful entrance to the rhythm of the guitars of Mike Slater and Erick Leonhard together with their vocalist introduce us to "Clocktower" in which gothic metal tints are perceived in their melodies. It should be noted that the performance of Jessie in the choir reaches an acute range that together with the guttural voices create an atmosphere surrounded by mystery that shows us another of the Bloodborne passages.

 

Our trip continues with "A call beyond" whose chords are linked to the previous song and in which the use of guttural voices over clean ones predominates. Personally, it is one of my favorite songs of this material. The combination between the guitars and the drums executed by Sterling Paterson that perfectly illustrate the journey made by the main character of Bloodborne through the spectral realm called Dream Hunter.

 

"Old Blood" is the longest song and again the predominance of guttural voices is identified. The song at a certain moment presents somewhat melodic passages accompanied by clean voices and retakes again the aggressiveness in its chords bringing dynamism and variety to this album.

 

We finished with "Eyes on the inside" which is the homonymous song of his last work. It begins with slow and melodic chords to the rhythm of a ballad, however, as it advances, the speed of its sound increases making it a more hard rock style, so they could not choose a better song to end this trip.

 

 

My Recommendation

 

 + KOSM begins to be constituted as a new proposal within the progressive metal with a sound that has been evolving in a quest to obtain an identity of its own. The presentation of his conceptual albums gives him extra value.

 

- It is a quite pleasant album to the ear for the variety of sounds that presents, nevertheless, to extend the quantity of songs would have been a possibility to give account of the plot that surrounds Bloodborne.

 

The design of the cover is simple and perfectly illustrates the atmosphere around Bloodborne.

KOSM es una banda de metal progresivo originaria de Vancouver BC, Canadá. Teniendo como influencias musicales a bandas como Mastodon, Tool y Gojira están presentando su nuevo EP titulado “Eyes on the Inside” publicado el 28 de junio compuesto por cinco canciones que dan muestra de la evolución musical que ha sufrido esta agrupación en los últimos meses.

 

Es importante destacar que este material fue producto de la colaboración de todos sus integrantes en el proceso de composición, por lo que puede distinguirse un sonido más pesado y conciso en sus melodías tomando como inspiración la trama central del vídeo juego Bloodborne, a comparación de su predecesor “Cosmonaut” publicado el año pasado y del cual retoman pasajes de H.P. Lovecraft en sus líricas.

Vamos a la Reseña!

 

La primera canción que se incluye en este EP se titula “Yharnam” y da muestra de la versatilidad en las voces de Jessie Grace quien hace empleo de notas limpias y guturales sin dificultad alguna y que nos recuerdan a The Agonist en determinado momento y comienza con un acorde en el bajo ejecutados por Michael ‘Pastrami’ Mastracci. La canción nos presenta el lugar donde se desarrolla la trama del videojuego caracterizada por su arquitectura victoriana y en la que cuyos habitantes han sido víctimas de una extraña enfermedad endémica.

 

Una entrada potente al ritmo de las guitarras de Mike Slater y Erick Leonhard en conjunto con su vocalista nos introducen a “Clocktower” en la que se perciben tintes de metal gótico en sus melodías. Cabe destacar que la interpretación de Jessie en el coro alcanza un rango agudo que en conjunto con las voces guturales nos crean una atmósfera rodeada de misterio que nos muestra otro de los pasajes de Bloodborne.

 

Nuestro viaje continúa con “A call beyond” cuyos acordes se enlazan con la canción anterior y en la que predomina el empleo de las voces guturales sobre las limpias. En lo personal, constituye una de mis canciones preferidas de este material. La combinación entre las guitarras y la batería ejecutada por Sterling Paterson que ilustran perfectamente el recorrido que realiza el personaje principal de Bloodborne a través del reino espectral denominado Sueño del Cazador.

 

“Old Blood” es la canción de mayor duración y nuevamente se identifica el predominio de las voces guturales. La canción en determinado momento presenta pasajes un tanto melódicos acompañados de voces limpias y retoma nuevamente la agresividad en sus acordes aportándole dinamismo y variedad a este álbum.

 

Culminamos con “Eyes on the inside” que es la canción homónima de su último trabajo. Comienza con acordes lentos y melódicos a ritmo de una balada, sin embargo, conforme avanza se incrementa la velocidad de su sonido haciéndola a un estilo más hard rock, por lo que no pudieron escoger una mejor canción para terminar con este viaje.

 

Mi Recomendación

 

 + KOSM comienza a constituirse como una nueva propuesta dentro del metal progresivo con un sonido que ha ido evolucionando en una búsqueda de obtener una identidad propia. La presentación de sus álbumes conceptuales le aporta un valor extra.

 

- Es un álbum bastante agradable al oído por la variedad de sonidos que presenta, sin embargo, ampliar la cantidad de canciones hubiera sido una posibilidad para dar cuenta de la trama que envuelve a Bloodborne.

 

El diseño de la portada es simple e ilustra a la perfección la atmósfera en torno a Bloodborne.

 

Calificación: 90/100.
