Cabrakaän was formed in 2011 by drummer Marko Cipäktli and vocalist Pat Cuikani who are both from Toluca, Mexico, and are currently based in Canada. They work with indigenous Mexican artists to incorporate authentic pre-Hispanic instruments like ocarinas, flutes, percussion instruments, and more in their dramatic, melodic music. They are ready to release their third album “Aztlán” this year along with a documentary to share their culture in a metal format. The first single off this release “Mictlán” (pronounced mickt-lahn), details the nine levels of the underworld in Aztec mythology through which the dead must overcome a series of challenges before reaching their final resting place. The band explains more:

“Through haunting melodies and thunderous rhythms, “Mictlán” delves into the depths of Mictlán, painting a sonic landscape that takes listeners on a journey through the nine levels of the Aztec underworld. With its powerful and energetic sound, the song captures the essence of Mictlán, enveloping the audience in an otherworldly experience. Mictlán is a concept that is still relevant today in understanding the meaning of our lives. The song contains the musical elements that make Cabrakaän who they are: a fusion of folkloric themes, orchestral arrangements, and, of course: heavy metal.”

The band’s sound and style were initially influenced by popular metal acts like Nightwish, Amon Amarth, and European folk metal bands. Soon after, the band established a distinct sound, style, and ambition to tell the forgotten pre-hispanic folk stories, mythologies, histories, and traditions of Mexico’s sociocultural past and present. Musically, “Mictlán” features nylon string instruments to emulate the sound of a vihuela (Spanish guitar), hompak (Mayan trumpet), and orchestral arrangements.

Cabrakaän’s lyrics and music are thematic and are heavily inspired by Mexican culture, history, and mythology. In the past, Cipäktli and Cuikani’s lyrics have engaged with Aztec and Mayan mythology. Lyrics from their upcoming album will engage with a mix of themes related to the Spanish conquest and more mythological concepts. It is recommended for fans of Nightwish, Epica, and Equilibrium.

My Recomendation

We begin this album with a unique fusion with Tonantzin with sounds of nature and unique pre-Hispanic instruments, slow rhythms and bass sounds, which the fusion with modern instruments becomes great, that union of 2 worlds, with Fuego we have totally a radical change of the sound and musical style, more rhythmic, fast, epic and melodic, the influence of symphonic metal is not long in coming, in Tlaloc they start with guttural voices and accompanied by the deep and strong voice of Pat, with the same musical line as the song previous, in Luces y Sombras, has a little more musical heaviness, but without losing that rhythm and tempo in the musical changes, with Malintzin we return with that good melodic combination with a greater power metal style, Pat's vocal range changes in this song with a greater operatic style and mixing a little melodic death, with Mictlán we have even more the power and strength of that melodic metal combining the symphonic and folk death metal parts of the song, with Yolot we have a great instrumental entry, and It returns with slow and somewhat dense rhythms, a pause in some instruments and then a radical change of rhythm with a harsh melodic death metal, with Xóchitl this original album closes sung in the pre-Hispanic language in a very original way, it has slower rhythms, and acoustic, you can hear Pat's range and vibrato, strong, melancholic and passionate, and with other extras like La Cigarra (featuring Reed Alton) in a beautiful way where the regional Mexican style is heard even more.

The album is good, it has its own style, production, melody and rhythm, it has sudden changes sometimes in some songs, it has a very varied mix, from melodic death, folk metal and the characteristic symphonic metal, Pat's voice is beautiful, only that it sometimes remains in the same line and range as the musical part, also that Mexican regional part with in La Cigarra, in the symphonic metal part if you can hear strongly the influence of the characteristic bands of the genre of these famous bands. from Europe, is a good release this year with a unique and original style.

Cabrakaän fue formado en 2011 por el baterista Marko Cipäktli y la vocalista Pat Cuikani, ambos de Toluca, México, y actualmente residen en Canadá. Trabajan con artistas indígenas mexicanos para incorporar auténticos instrumentos prehispánicos como ocarinas, flautas, instrumentos de percusión y más en su música dramática y melódica. Están listos para lanzar este año su tercer álbum “Aztlán” junto con un documental para compartir su cultura en formato metal. El primer sencillo de este lanzamiento, “Mictlán” (pronunciado mickt-lahn), detalla los nueve niveles del inframundo en la mitología azteca a través de los cuales los muertos deben superar una serie de desafíos antes de llegar a su lugar de descanso final.

La banda explica más:

“A través de melodías inquietantes y ritmos atronadores, “Mictlán” se adentra en las profundidades de Mictlán, pintando un paisaje sonoro que lleva a los oyentes en un viaje a través de los nueve niveles del inframundo azteca. Con su sonido poderoso y enérgico, la canción captura la esencia de Mictlán, envolviendo al público en una experiencia de otro mundo. Mictlán es un concepto que sigue siendo relevante hoy en día para entender el significado de nuestras vidas. El sonido y el estilo de la banda fueron inicialmente influenciados por grupos de metal populares como Nightwish, Amon Amarth y bandas europeas de folk metal. Poco después, la banda estableció un sonido, un estilo y una ambición distintos de contar las olvidadas historias, mitologías, historias y tradiciones populares prehispánicas del pasado y presente sociocultural de México. Musicalmente, “Mictlán” presenta instrumentos de cuerdas de nailon para emular el sonido de una vihuela (guitarra española), hompak (trompeta maya) y arreglos orquestales.

Las letras y la música de Cabrakaän son temáticas y están fuertemente inspiradas en la cultura, la historia y la mitología mexicanas. En el pasado, las letras de Cipäktli y Cuikani se relacionaron con la mitología azteca y maya. Las letras de su próximo álbum abordarán una mezcla de temas relacionados con la conquista española y conceptos más mitológicos.

Mi Recomendación

Comenzamos este albúm con una fusión única con Tonantzin con sonidos de la naturaleza e instrumentos prehispánicos únicos, ritmos lentos y sonidos graves, el cual la fusión con instrumentos modernos se hace genial, esa unión de 2 mundos, con Fuego tenemos totalmente un cambio radical del sonido y estilo musical, más rítmicos, veloces, épicos y melódicos, la influencia del metal sinfónico no se hace esperar, en Tlaloc arrancan con voces guturales y acompañado así con la voz grave y fuerte de Pat, con la misma línea musical que la canción anterior, en Luces y Sombras, tiene un poco de mayor pesadez musical, pero sin perder ese ritmo y tempo en los cambios musicales, con Malintzin volvemos con esa buena combinación melodica con un mayor de estilo de power metal, el rango de voz de Pat cambia en esta canción con mayor estilo operístico y mezclando un poco de death melódico, con Mictlán tenemos aún más la potencia y fuerza de ese metal melódico combinando las partes sinfónicas y folk death metal de la canción, con Yolot tenemos una gran entrada instrumental, y se regresa con ritmos lentos y algo densos, una pausa en algunos instrumentos y después un cambio radical de ritmo con un áspero death metal melódico, con Xóchitl se cierra esta original albúm cantada en la lengua prehispánica de forma muy original, tiene ritmos más lento, y acústicos, se escucha el rango y el vibrato de Pat, fuerte, melancólico y pasional, y con otros extras como La Cigarra (featuring Reed Alton) de una bella forma donde se escucha aún más el estilo regional mexicano.

El albúm es bueno, tiene estilo propio, producción, melodía y ritmo, tiene cambios bruscos a veces en algunas canciones, tiene una mezcla muy variada, desde death melódico, el folk metal y el característico metal sinfónico, la voz de Pat es bella, solo que se mantiene a veces en la misma línea y rango que la parte musical, también esa parte regional mexicano con en la Cigarra, en la parte de metal sinfónico si se puede escuchar fuerte la influencia de las bandas características del genero de estas bandas famosas de Europa, es un buen lanzamiento de este año con un estilo único y original.
