Talia Hoit is an American singer-songwriter from Colorado. She was classically trained at a young age and now she writes songs and various symphonic metal compositions. She has contributed to bands for the last two decades and also has a collection of solo works. Alongside a talented group of producers and musicians, she is bringing more of her most personal and intimate solo songs to life.
Hello! Thank you very much for being able to have this interview with you! How are you?
Talia:
Hello, thanks so much for the interview! I’m doing well, thank you!
Talia! Tell us a bit about yourself!
Talia:
I am from the USA, I live in the mountains in Colorado. I am a songwriter, but I started playing the piano at an early age. I always wrote poems and some songs, but mostly just for myself because I enjoy it. I have written songs with bands that I have played keyboards or sung in as well. A few years ago I began to work with producers on some of my own songs to finish writing them and produce them well so they can be released to the public.
How did you start this path?
Talia:
I cannot think of what a starting point is, because I think I have always been on a creative path. For example, I just finished recording a song for the first time that I wrote the words when I was 15 years old. No one has ever heard that song or read those words until recently. A long time ago, I decided to try recording some of my songs, by then I already had written so many. I did not have money to record professionally, so I recorded at home. The quality was not very good and I got very discouraged. I spent more of my time doing music with a band and a classical ensemble instead because it was better to do music with other people, there were more opportunities and more collaboration. In 2019, the mixing engineer that my band was working with wanted to produce a song for us. The band was not ready to do it, but I had a song of my own I wanted to record, which was the single Angel that I just released. He produced it for me, and I thought it was so great to have a well-produced recording of my song, that I decided to try to record as many of my solo songs as possible. That was the beginning of my solo project that you are beginning to hear music from now.
What is your musical proposal, within this Symphonic Metal style?
Talia:
I love symphonic metal music. I think it is because I have a classical music background, but also love heavy music. Most of my songs are written as either piano/vocal or guitar/vocal songs at first, so they could be produced with an arrangement in any genre. But my voice is a little unique and it fits better with a symphonic metal style. Also, my lyric themes are a little darker and melancholy, and I think my songs are expressed the most artistically in this genre.
What musical influences do you have?
Talia:
I have so many influences from different genres. I grew up listening to my father’s records from the 70’s and my grandfather’s records from the 40’s and 50’s. I listened to a little bit of pop music, but spent so much time practicing the piano that I did not actually listen to music as much as some other people might. In college, I went to a school to study classical music. I got into rock and metal music when I joined my first band, and then I began dating someone who was a singer and drummer for death metal bands. When I opened my mind to try to understand the heavier music, I discovered that it really resonated with me. I had been writing songs for a long time by then and played them in more pop, singer/songwriter style and venues, such as coffee shops. Sometimes I had been criticized for writing darker and heavier lyrics. But when I discovered metal music I realized that I had just been performing my songs in the wrong genre up to that point and that what I had to say in my lyrics could be well expressed through heavier music. I also got into symphonic metal music through my bands and all the music my friends would share with me. I think I really resonated with bands such as Within Temptation and Nightwish, and Evanescence, so you probably will hear that musical influence a lot in my music.
Tell us about your new singles Angel and Abandon, what is your musical inspiration to write them? And who composed these new singles musically?
Talia:
Most of my inspiration to write songs is from whatever is going on in my life, things that I experience or think about, and then write something to creatively express my thoughts and feelings. Musically, I often improvise on the piano or write chord progressions so that I can accompany my lyrics and singing. Sometimes I will write the music first and then lyrics, but usually the lyrics first.
I wrote the song Angel many years ago when my childhood friend died. I did not try to write it any certain way. I was actually out at a club where my boyfriend’s band was playing a show, and I was feeling really sad, so I just started writing the words. Later I improvised the piano part to accompany the song so that I could sing it. It was just a piano/vocal song until the producer created the full band arrangement for the music that you hear in the single. We worked together to decide what the arrangement should be, but the producer, Jarek Musil, composed and performed all of the instrument parts except for the piano.
Abandon is a more recent song. I wrote it about a year ago as a piano/vocal song, and it immediately went to the producer, Mane Cabrales, who created the full band arrangement for it. I did not intend to write the song, but it just happened one day while I was playing the piano. I had a moment in which I felt really overwhelmed and defeated with some stuff that was not going well in my life at the time. That day was my breaking point emotionally, I guess. I just began playing the piano and improvised the words and music, with no goal in mind. The lyrics that I wrote reflect my process of mentally letting go of everything to try to find the path forward for myself.
What would you say to new listeners to get them to listen to your singles? Talia Hoit who gives us musically?
Talia:
The music is meant to be an experience. The things I write about are things a lot of people can probably resonate with. I really hope you will listen to my music and enjoy it but also
experience some sort of connection to the emotion behind the songs and make it your own. I would love to hear from everyone as well if you like the song or if you resonate with it for some reason!
Do you have the development of a complete album in process? Any news on that album?
Talia:
Yes, I am finishing up a full-length album currently. The recording production is almost completed, and then we need to do all the things to get it ready to release, which will take a little time. There will of course be more news and information coming soon, but I can tell you for this album I have been working with some great people. It is being produced by Frank Pitters in Austria, who I discovered because he worked with one of my favorite bands, Deep Sun, but you will likely know him from his work on albums by Visions of Atlantis, Edenbridge, and Dragony.
And these singles are a part of it?
Talia:
No, these singles I have released so far stand alone and are separate from the upcoming album.
Another upcoming single you’re about to release with a new video?
Talia:
I do have another song that is finished, which was also produced by the same producer as my song Angel, Jarek Musil. I hope to release it with a new video in the near future. I have a special concept for the video and so right now I am trying to find a videographer who can help me with it. There are a couple other singles I have been working on with other producers as well, that may hopefully be ready in the near future as well.

¡Talía! ¡Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti!
Talía:
Soy de USA, vivo en las montañas de Colorado. Soy compositora, pero comencé a tocar el piano a una edad temprana. Siempre escribí poemas y algunas canciones, pero sobre todo solo para mí porque lo disfruto. He escrito canciones con bandas en las que también he tocado teclados o cantado. Hace unos años comencé a trabajar con productores en algunas canciones propias para terminar de escribirlas y producirlas bien para que puedan ser lanzadas al público.
¿Cómo empezaste este camino?
Talía:
No puedo pensar en lo que es un punto de partida, porque creo que siempre he estado en un camino creativo. Por ejemplo, acabo de terminar de grabar una canción por primera vez cuya letra escribí cuando tenía 15 años. Nadie había escuchado esa canción o leído esas palabras hasta hace poco. Hace mucho tiempo, decidí intentar grabar algunas de mis canciones, para entonces ya había escrito muchas. No tenía dinero para grabar profesionalmente, así que grabé en casa. La calidad no era muy buena y me desanimé mucho. Pasé más tiempo haciendo música con una banda y un conjunto clásico porque era mejor hacer música con otras personas, había más oportunidades y más colaboración. En 2019, el ingeniero de mezcla con el que trabajaba mi banda quería producir una canción para nosotros. La banda no estaba lista para hacerlo, pero yo tenía una canción propia que quería grabar, que era el sencillo Angel que acabo de lanzar. Él la produjo para mí, y pensé que era tan bueno tener una grabación bien producida de mi canción, que decidí tratar de grabar tantas de mis canciones como solista como fuera posible. Ese fue el comienzo de mi proyecto en solitario del que estáis empezando a escuchar música a partir de ahora.
¿Cuál es tu propuesta musical, dentro de este estilo de Metal Sinfónico?
Talía:
Me encanta la música de metal sinfónico. Creo que es porque tengo experiencia en música clásica, pero también me encanta la música pesada. La mayoría de mis canciones están escritas como canciones de piano/voz o guitarra/voz al principio, por lo que podrían producirse con un arreglo en cualquier género. Pero mi voz es un poco única y encaja mejor con un estilo de metal sinfónico. Además, mis temas líricos son un poco más oscuros y melancólicos, y creo que mis canciones se expresan más artísticamente en este género.
¿Qué influencias musicales tienes?
Talía:
Tengo tantas influencias de diferentes géneros. Crecí escuchando los discos de mi padre de los años 70 y los discos de mi abuelo de los años 40 y 50. Escuché un poco de música pop, pero pasé tanto tiempo practicando el piano que en realidad no escuché música tanto como lo harían otras personas. En la universidad, fui a una escuela para estudiar música clásica. Me metí en la música rock y metal cuando me uní a mi primera banda, y luego comencé a salir con alguien que era cantante y baterista de bandas de death metal. Cuando abrí mi mente para tratar de entender la música más pesada, descubrí que realmente resonaba conmigo. Para entonces, había estado escribiendo canciones durante mucho tiempo y las tocaba en un estilo más pop, de cantautor y en lugares, como cafeterías. A veces me habían criticado por escribir letras más oscuras y pesadas. Pero cuando descubrí la música metal me di cuenta de que solo había estado interpretando mis canciones en el género equivocado hasta ese momento y que lo que tenía que decir en mis letras podría expresarse bien a través de música más pesada. También me metí en la música de metal sinfónico a través de mis bandas y toda la música que mis amigos compartían conmigo. Creo que realmente resoné con bandas como Within Temptation y Nightwish, y Evanescence, por lo que probablemente escucharás mucho esa influencia musical en mi música.
Cuéntanos sobre tus nuevos sencillos Angel and Abandon, ¿cuál es tu inspiración musical para escribirlos? ¿Y quién compuso musicalmente estos nuevos sencillos?
Talía:
La mayor parte de mi inspiración para escribir canciones proviene de cualquier cosa que esté pasando en mi vida, cosas que experimento o pienso, y luego escribo algo para expresar creativamente mis pensamientos y sentimientos. Musicalmente, a menudo improviso en el piano o escribo progresiones de acordes para poder acompañar mis letras y mi canto. A veces escribo primero la música y luego la letra, pero normalmente primero la letra.
Escribí la canción Ángel hace muchos años cuando murió mi amigo de la infancia. No traté de escribirlo de ninguna manera determinada. De hecho, estaba en un club donde la banda de mi novio estaba tocando y me sentía muy triste, así que comencé a escribir las palabras. Luego improvisé la parte de piano para acompañar la canción y poder cantarla. Era solo una canción de piano y voz hasta que el productor creó el arreglo completo de la banda para la música que escuchas en el sencillo. Trabajamos juntos para decidir cuál debería ser el arreglo, pero el productor, Jarek Musil, compuso e interpretó todas las partes del instrumento excepto el piano.
Abandon es una canción más reciente. ¿Qué le dirías a los nuevos oyentes para que escuchen tus singles? Talia Hoit que nos da musicalmente?
Talía:
La música está destinada a ser una experiencia. Las cosas sobre las que escribo son cosas con las que mucha gente probablemente pueda resonar. Realmente espero que escuchen mi música y la disfruten, pero también experimenta algún tipo de conexión con la emoción detrás de las canciones y hazla tuya. ¡Me encantaría saber de todos si te gusta la canción o si resuenas con ella por alguna razón!
¿Tienen el desarrollo de un álbum completo en proceso? ¿Alguna noticia de ese disco?
Talía:
Sí, estoy terminando un álbum de larga duración actualmente. La producción de grabación está casi completa, y luego tenemos que hacer todo lo posible para que esté lista para su lanzamiento, lo que llevará un poco de tiempo. Por supuesto, pronto habrá más noticias e información, pero puedo decirles que para este álbum he estado trabajando con algunas personas geniales. Talía:
Tengo otra canción que está terminada, que también fue producida por el mismo productor que mi canción Angel, Jarek Musil. Espero lanzarlo con un nuevo video en un futuro cercano. Tengo un concepto especial para el video y ahora mismo estoy tratando de encontrar un videógrafo que pueda ayudarme con él. Hay un par de otros sencillos en los que he estado trabajando con otros productores, que espero que también estén listos en un futuro cercano.
