ETWAS is a French occult symphonic metal band.
"RITES OF THE DAMNED - CHVPTER II" is the new album of the band, composed of ten tracks of dark symphonies and haunting atmosphere.
After their melancholic EP "Behind the Veil" and the occult symphonic "ENOCHIAN KEYS - CHVPTER I", ETWAS follows the path of dreadful mysteries to tell, inviting the listener to join the ritual.
Greetings friends! Thank you very much for having the interview with you again! How are you?
Etwas:
Our pleasure ! We are fine, thank you. So thrilled about the release of the new album !
Tell us a bit about the story behind Etwas band in these years?
Etwas:
We had an excellent 2023. After releasing "Enochian Keys - Chvpter I", we had the opportunity to perform several times in different places in France, and to share the stage with great bands. We had the incredible luck to be the first part of Visions of Atlantis in April 2023. It is also the first show for Etwas, so it is a lot of pressure. After this one, we performed through France and it was really awesome. It made us progress and made our relationship stronger and closer. It was a true experience to make all these shows and to share with people.
Tell us about your new album?
Etwas:
With "Rites of the Damned - Chvpter II", we sink into darkness, we turn off all light. We wanted something deeper, darker, more agressive.
So, to have this kind of sound, we recorded the drums in 21Decibel, a professional studio in Avignon (France), and in less than a week, Clement recorded all tracks. Silver checked everything during this recording, guiding Clement if needed to take this or that direction. And as we were in a studio all together during several days, Florian recorded all the bass lines of the tracks as well in another room. While Victoria crocheted Baphomet plushes for the merch of the shows to come.
It strenghtened the band's bonds.
Moreover, we wanted an external point of view, something to add to our album. We contacted Paul Darbot, a music composer for videogames, and asked him if we would be open to compose the introduction. He totally understood the spirit of this new album, and the atmosphere he created for this new album is insane.
What story or experiences do you build this album about?
Etwas:
We always liked dark mysteries, ghosts stories, witchcraft...It was already the themes of the previous album and we went futher in this one. For instance, the poem of the introduction and of the last track is "The Necropolis" from the poet Albert Laighton. The second track, "The Masque of the Red Death" is inspired by the novel (wearing the same name) of Edgar Allan Poe, which is one of the greatest influences of gothic culture. "Haunting Curse" is inspired by the story of the Smurl family, a case from the Warren couple. "Litanies of Darkness" is about the evil Gilles de Rais. So, different topics but always about a very dark ambiance.
In fact it sounds super dark and brutal! From the beginning! With RITES OF THE DAMNED! Do you have a favorite song?
Etwas:
We wanted a deep, consuming, very enveloping sound. That the listener could listen to the album and dive into it, taking part to the rituals.
Maybe our favorite song would be "Bloodmoon Invocation", because it is catchy and it stays in mind. It is also one of the most difficult to play !
Symphonic Metal or Black Symphonic Metal? Is more in this moment?
Etwas:
We are at the crossroad of these styles. Because we like both styles and put all our music tastes in it. To propose something else. So, we are somewhere between symphonic metal, black symphonic metal, symphonic deathcore... We found one day on a website that we were considered as Occult Symphonic. With our atmosphere and our topics, it really corresponds.
Victoria! Did you participate in writing any songs?
Victoria:
Yes, I did. If Silver composed all the songs with all instruments lines and orchestrations, I wrote all the lyrics and turned them into music. It is really a work of different people on the composition of an entire song. And as the orchestrations and melodies were very rich, I varied different voices, growls, lyrical, spoken works, harmonies... On the themes I am passionate about.
Right now, do you already have dates to continue with your new album?
Etwas:
Officially, not yet. But we are searching, because we can't wait to present this new album on stage !
How Rites of the Damned - Chvpter II is linked with Enochian Keys - Chvpter I ?
Etwas:
In the Chvpter I, we dealt with occult arts, as the necromancy, alchemy, divination... all these dark pratices to get knowledge and power, pacting with the Devil. By this way, souls get damned. In this Chvpter II, we speak about the "rites of the damned", the rituals of the souls once cursed. What they do once the pact is forged.
Why don't they release an anthology later with all these great songs? They have excellent black metal!
Etwas:
Thank you ! For now, some songs are added in different playlists. We don't have enough songs for now to make this kind of anthology but we are not closed to this eventuality.
Any video or new video in process? About this new album.
Etwas:
We release "Bloodmoon Invocation" as single two weeks before the album, to announce this last one. We will do another ones, in different formats and something is already cooking...
The album cover looks great! For you what does it mean?
Etwas:
Thank you ! This artwork is the perfect image of what the album is about. Dark, consuming, dread. This main character in the center is a kind of evil priest, rising legions of dead and ghosts while everything around is burning. We really liked the marriage of grey/green and orange/red. We think it is powerful and immediately gives the album atmosphere.

"RITES OF THE DAMNED - CHVPTER II" es el nuevo álbum de la banda, compuesto por diez temas de sinfonías oscuras y atmósfera inquietante.
Después de su melancólico EP "Behind the Veil" y el ocultista sinfónico "ENOCHIAN KEYS - CHVPTER I", ETWAS sigue el camino de espantosos misterios por contar, invitando al oyente a unirse al ritual.
¡Saludos amigos! ¡Muchas gracias por volver a tener la entrevista con ustedes! ¿Cómo están?
Etwas:
¡Un placer! Estamos bien gracias. ¡Estoy muy emocionados por el lanzamiento del nuevo álbum!
¿Cuéntanos un poco sobre la historia detrás de la banda Etwas en estos años?
Etwas:
Tuvimos un excelente 2023. Después de lanzar "Enochian Keys - Chvpter I", tuvimos la oportunidad de actuar varias veces en diferentes lugares de Francia y compartir escenario con grandes bandas. Tuvimos la increíble suerte de ser la primera parte de Visions of Atlantis en abril de 2023. También es el primer programa de Etwas, por lo que supone mucha presión. Después de este, actuamos en Francia y fue realmente increíble. Nos hizo progresar e hizo que nuestra relación fuera más fuerte y más estrecha. Fue una verdadera experiencia hacer todos estos shows y compartir con la gente.
¿Cuéntanos sobre tu nuevo álbum?
Etwas:
Con "Ritos de los Malditos - Capítulo II", nos hundimos en la oscuridad, apagamos toda luz. Queríamos algo más profundo, más oscuro, más agresivo.
Entonces, para tener este tipo de sonido, grabamos la batería en 21Decibel, un estudio profesional en Aviñón (Francia), y en menos de una semana, Clement grabó todos los temas. Silver revisó todo durante esta grabación, guiando a Clement si era necesario para tomar esta o aquella dirección. Y como estuvimos todos juntos en un estudio durante varios días, Florian grabó todas las líneas de bajo de las pistas también en otra habitación. Mientras que Victoria tejía peluches de Baphomet para la mercancía de los próximos espectáculos.
Fortaleció los vínculos de la banda.
Además, queríamos un punto de vista externo, algo que añadir a nuestro álbum. Nos pusimos en contacto con Paul Darbot, un compositor de música para videojuegos, y le preguntamos si estaríamos dispuestos a componer la introducción. Entendió totalmente el espíritu de este nuevo álbum y la atmósfera que creó para este nuevo álbum es una locura.
¿Sobre qué historia o experiencias construyes este álbum?
Etwas:
Siempre nos gustaron los misterios oscuros, las historias de fantasmas, la brujería... Ya eran los temas del disco anterior y en este fuimos más allá. Por ejemplo, el poema de la introducción y del último tema es "La Necrópolis" del poeta Albert Laighton. El segundo tema, "The Masque of the Red Death" está inspirado en la novela (que lleva el mismo nombre) de Edgar Allan Poe, que es una de las mayores influencias de la cultura gótica. "Haunting Curse" está inspirada en la historia de la familia Smurl, un caso del matrimonio Warren. "Letanías de las tinieblas" trata sobre el malvado Gilles de Rais. Entonces, temas diferentes, pero siempre sobre un ambiente muy oscuro.
De hecho, ¡suena súper oscuro y brutal! ¡Desde el principio! ¡RITES OF THE DAMNED! ¿Tienen una canción favorita?
Etwas:
Queríamos un sonido profundo, absorbente y muy envolvente. Que el oyente pudiera escuchar el disco y sumergirse en él, participando de los rituales.
Quizás nuestra canción favorita sea "Bloodmoon Invocation", porque es pegadiza y se queda en la memoria. ¡También es uno de los más difíciles de tocar!
¿Metal sinfónico o black metal sinfónico? ¿Hay más en este momento?
Etwas:
Estamos en la encrucijada de estos estilos. Porque nos gustan los dos estilos y ponemos todos nuestros gustos musicales en ello. Para proponer algo más. Entonces, estamos en algún lugar entre el metal sinfónico, el metal sinfónico negro, el deathcore sinfónico... Un día descubrimos en un sitio web que éramos considerados como Occult Symphonic. Con nuestra atmósfera y nuestros temas, esto realmente corresponde.
¡Victoria! ¿Participaste en la escritura de alguna canción?
Victoria:
Sí, lo hice. Si Silver compuso todas las canciones con todas las líneas de instrumentos y orquestaciones, yo escribí todas las letras y las convertí en música. Realmente es un trabajo de diferentes personas en la composición de una canción completa. Y como las orquestaciones y melodías eran muy ricas, varié diferentes voces, gruñidos, obras líricas, habladas, armonías... Sobre los temas que me apasionan.
Ahora mismo, ¿ya tienen fechas para continuar con su nuevo disco?
Etwas:
Oficialmente, todavía no. ¡Pero estamos buscando, porque estamos ansiosos por presentar este nuevo álbum en el escenario!
¿Cómo se vinculan Rites of the Damned - Chvpter II con Enochian Keys - Chvpter I?
Etwas:
En el Capítulo I tratamos de artes ocultas, como la nigromancia, la alquimia, la adivinación... todas esas prácticas oscuras para conseguir conocimiento y poder, pactando con el diablo. De esta manera las almas se condenan. En este Capítulo II hablamos de los "ritos de los condenados", los rituales de las almas una vez malditas. Qué hacen una vez forjado el pacto.
¿Por qué no lanzan una antología más tarde con todas estas grandes canciones? ¡Tienen un excelente black metal!
Etwas:
Gracias! Por ahora, algunas canciones se agregan en diferentes listas de reproducción. No tenemos suficientes canciones por ahora para hacer este tipo de antología, pero no estamos cerrados a esta eventualidad.
¿Algún vídeo nuevo en proceso? Sobre este nuevo álbum.
Etwas:
Lanzamos "Bloodmoon Invocation" como single dos semanas antes del álbum, para anunciar este último. Haremos otros más, en diferentes formatos y algo ya se está cocinando...
¡La portada del álbum se ve genial! ¿Para ti qué significa?
Etwas:
¡Gracias! Esta obra de arte es la imagen perfecta de lo que trata el álbum. Oscuro, consumidor, pavor. Este personaje principal en el centro es una especie de sacerdote malvado, que se levanta legiones de muertos y fantasmas mientras todo a su alrededor arde. Nos gustó mucho la combinación de gris/verde y naranja/rojo. Creemos que es poderoso e inmediatamente le da atmósfera al álbum.
