X!DENT is South Korea's first metal idol based in Seoul. This three unit idol (S3ARU세아루, HUYU후유, Xii시이) tries to integrate Metal and Idol culture which is quite unusual in Korea.

XIDENT (엑시던트/エクシデント; stylized as X!DEN†) is a Korean live idol group, consisting of HUYU, Xii and S3ARU. The members were announced on January 1st, 2021. They had their live debut on February 27, 2021 on “Choose Your STAR”.

Thank you very much for this great interview! ¡And the opportunity to know a little more about you! Welcome! This is her house! How are you?

Hi there! Thank you for the interview :)

Tell us a little about each of you! Which are your hobbies?

S3ARU:

Nowadays I’m into a Korean vampire comedy show called ‘Hello, Francesca’. It was made in 2005 but I think this is ahead of times.

HUYU:

I try to memorize some choreography of the songs that I like.

Xii :

Apart from listening to music, I’m into boxing. But nowadays I cannot go to the gym due to busy schedule.

What are your musical influences?

S3ARU :

When I was 8 years old, I listened to a Japanese band called ELLEGARDEN, and then Melanie martinez, jrock,hip-hop,metalcore,EDM was a thing on my middle-high school era.

HUYU:

I’ve never listen to metal music before I join X!DENT, but nowadays I listen to it.

Xii :

Marilyn Manson since I was in 5th grade. From him, I naturally started listening to NIN, Korn, Slipknot, and many more. I also like post punk/techno/EBM(electronic body music). Seems like my musical inspiration is based on industrial music. Nowadays BMTH/Slaughter to prevail/Bad omens are my biggest inspiration. Love it when the bands have their own identity.

Why did you form the band Xident?

There is no ‘metal idol’ in Korea yet, so I wanted to do something that other people attempt.

HUYU:

Same as S3ARU

Xii :

I originally wanted to start a band, but S3ARU approached me to be in a team. It sounded fun so I joined.

What does your band name mean?

당신의 밴드 이름은 무엇을 의미합니까?

X!DENT:

It means ‘accident’ but there is no special meaning about it haha.

How has been the acceptance of your musical style with the customs or folklore of South Korea?

한국의 관습이나 민속을 당신의 음악 스타일에 어떻게 받아들였습니까?

X!DENT:

S3ARU :

I had an interest in Pansori (Korean traditional way of singing) , Korean traditional culture so I wanted to mix it to our team’s identity. Korean stuff+metal music, sounds like really new so we tried to combine as good as we could. Eventually the crowd likes it pretty much (really appreciate it!). We also tried to make our original costumed inspired by Hanbok, our traditional clothing, and take our profile picture in front of Changgyoung-Palace.

HUYU:

I think it is good to combine the old and the new.

Xii :

I think our main theme is ‘dark Korean folk tales’. I personally like our shaman culture and like creepy folk tales so when we try to write the lyrics, or ask, I research a lot as I can. A book that Korean shaman wrote, a Korean folk tales, urban legend, folk religion kind of stuffs are so interesting so we would like to keep our identity like this way.

Your official name as it appears online contains the word <<Idol>>, what does that mean to you?

S3ARU:

A word ‘idol’ is literally just a word. We would like to make music and perform in front of the audiences just like other artists.

HUYU:

I have no idea.

Xii:

Same as S3ARU. We would like to do whatever we want. A word ‘idol’ is just a title.

About their current EP 縊施亶吐 has a super heavy and strong musical beginning! I congratulate you! Who composes the music and lyrics? Any of you?

그들의 현재 EP 縊施亶吐는 매우 무겁고 강한 음악적 시작을 가지고 있습니다! 축하합니다! 누가 작곡하고 가사를 쓰나요? 여러분 중에?

X!DENT:

Most of the songs we ask to a composer(Mostly Korean but sometimes in Japan as well) In case of ‘Grand Guignol’, lyrics and the songs(the main structure) are written by Xii though. Lyrics are mostly written by S3ARU and Xii but you can check the credit of our songs. Someday we would like to write the song by ourselves.

What is the theme or main theme of your EP 縊施亶吐?

EP 縊施亶吐의 주제 또는 주요 주제는 무엇입니까?

S3ARU:

It is based on Korean shamanism, Korean ghosts. But in Mantra, our title song, is about a goddess Shiva.

Do you have any special songs from this EP that you like?

With this current EP, are you working on an album? Will you release any singles? Any video?

지금 이 EP로 앨범 작업을 하고 있나요? 싱글을 낼 건가요? 영상은 없나요?

X!DENT:

What is your goal for the group in 2024?

2024년 그룹 목표는 무엇입니까?

X!DENT:

Since our member HUYU will leave our team soon due to academic reason, we would like to continue X!DENT with new members. We are considering oversea tour as well. Our last Japan tour was great so we would like to perform overseas again.

Is there an upcoming date or tour in Korea or a famous venue in Korea that you would like to perform at?

한국에서 곧 있을 날짜나 투어나 한국에서 공연하고 싶은 유명한 장소가 있습니까?

S3ARU :

I’ve visited KBS arena because of Melanie martinez’s show. It was HUGE and thought we could visualize our performance better. So someday I would like to perform in KBS arena.

HUYU:

No specific place but a bigger place

Xii :

I would like to perform at a metal-friendly festival in Korea.

Any presentation or live online? What do you think of this idea?

Back in the Covid -19 season, there was lots of online shows. But will consider it again for our oversea fans.

Our member HUYU will be leaving us on February, but we will continue X!DENT with new members so stay tuned. Also there is some news for fans in America but not soon.
