A heavy metal band from Athens, Greece. The idea of starting the band is first formed in late 2009, when Dionisis (guitar) and Hector (bass) meet during their military service and discover they share a passion for rock and metal music. Soon after, they are joined by two friends, thus forming the band’s initial lineup, and in 2010 they record the demo album “Past Mistakes” where they experiment with their sound and make their first attempt in composing their own original material.
2023 finds Shinigami in an all time high. With the addition of Vasiliki (vocals), Kostas (keyboards) and Christina (bass) rounding out the band’s strongest lineup to date, they re-record 4 songs from the “Back From The Dead” album with some valuable input from Bob Katsionis and are ready to enter the next chapter in their story.

Hey there! We’re doing great, we’re super excited to chat with you!
Tell us about you band! Who are all of you?
Shinigami:
We are Shinigami and we hail from Athens, Greece. The current lineup of the band features Dionysis (founding member of the band) and Lefteris on guitars, Kostas on drums, Vassiliki on lead vocals, Konstantinos on keyboards and Christina on bass guitar. We can safely thay that this is, by far, the strongest lineup tha band has ever had.
We started the band back in 2009. Since the very beginning, our main goal has been to write and promote our own material rather than just perform cover songs. Since then, we have written many songs, have recorder two full length albums, played many gigs and, although we have had many lineup changes over the years, we have never lost our focus or our passion about what we do.
What are your Heavy Metal musical influences?
Shinigami:
Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept, Dio, Savatage, Motorhead, AC/DC… they are probably to many to list here. Most of the greats from the 70s, 80s and even 90s have influenced us to some extent.
Guilty musical tastes?
Shinigami:
Lefteris (guitars) legitimately likes Black Sabbath’s “Born Again” álbum, does that count? Haha! In all seriousness, though, apart from metal (which we all love), we enjoy listening to all kinds of music. When it comes to music, there is really no such thing as a “guilty peasure”. How can there be any guilt in something that brings you joy?

What does mean your band name? What is the musical theme, that is, the lyrics of your band's songs?
Shinigami:
Shinigami, which literally translates to “gods/spirits of death”, are spirits found in Japanese religion and culture that act as psychopomps. That is, they invite humans towards death. In modern times they have found their way into pop culture mainly through manga/anime, which all of us in the band enjoy. We felt it was a strong name for a metal band, so we adopted it.
Up to this point in the band’s history, our lyrics mostly deal with personal thoughts/strugles and everyday issues, although we do throw the occasional historical/fantasy element in the mix to keep things interesting. Having said that, there really is no one particular thing/theme that defines our lyrics. We write what feels appropriate for the music and fits our mood.
Tell us about your single “Strike Me Down”?
Shinigami:
“Strike Me Down” is one of the heaviest songs we have written so far and represents where the band headed, musically, moving forwards. Lyrically, it is a song about perceverance, endurance and resiliene in the face of adversity. You could say it represents our attitude as a band. No matter what the world throws at us, we keep our heads high, weather the storm and emerge victorious stronger than before.
Is it part of the next album?
Shinigami:
No, it’s a re-recording of a song from our 2020 “Back From The Dead” album.
In 2023 we managed to form what is probably the best lineup Shinigami ever had. Thus, we decided to re-record 4 songs from our “Back From The Dead” album (with some valuable input from producer/musician extraordinaire Bob Katsionis) and as a means of introducing our new lineup to the world as well as closing that álbum cycle and paving the way for our next reléase.
Having said that, we have already finished writing all music and lyrics for our next album and we are ready to enter the studio and begin recording it. We will, once again, be working with Bob Katsionis and, if everything goes according to plan, we are aiming for a 2024 summer release.
Do you have any new videos for your next release as well?
Shinigami:
Well, the álbum has to be recorded first, of course but we definately plan to do at least one video. Hopefully, we’ll manage to do even more!
Do you have dates for any presentations?
Shinigami:
We definatelly plan on orgsnizing a big reléase party when the álbum comes out, where we will be performing it in it’s entirety. As to when that is going to take place, it all depends on when the álbum gets released.
What other plans do you have for 2024?
Shinigami:
As mentioned before, our main focus will be recording and releasing our next álbum. However, since we all enjoy performing live very much, we will pursue doing gigs as often as posible.
What other surprises do you have for us?
Shinigami:
It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if we told you, now, would it? You’ll just have to wait a bit longer and see, when the time is right!
What do your fans expect with this new single?
Shinigami:
More gigs, more songs, more metal. We aim to please and we will not dissapoint!

Shinigami:

Una banda de heavy metal de Atenas, Grecia. La idea de formar la banda surge a finales de 2009, cuando Dionisis (guitarra) y Héctor (bajo) se conocen durante su servicio militar y descubren que comparten la pasión por la música rock y metal. ¡Cuéntanos sobre su banda! ¿Quiénes son todos ustedes?
Shinigami:
Somos Shinigami y venimos de Atenas, Grecia. La formación actual de la banda incluye a Dionysis (miembro fundador de la banda) y Lefteris a las guitarras, Kostas a la batería, Vassiliki a la voz principal, Konstantinos a los teclados y Christina al bajo. Podemos decir con seguridad que esta es, de lejos, la formación más fuerte que jamás haya tenido la banda.

Desde entonces, hemos escrito muchas canciones, grabado dos álbumes completos, tocado en muchos conciertos y, aunque hemos tenido muchos cambios de formación a lo largo de los años, nunca hemos perdido el enfoque ni la pasión por lo que hacemos.
¿Cuáles son sus influencias musicales del Heavy Metal?

¿Gustos musicales culpables?
Shinigami:
A Lefteris (guitarras) legítimamente le gusta el álbum “Born Again” de Black Sabbath, ¿eso cuenta? ¡Ja ja! Pero hablando en serio, aparte del metal (que a todos nos encanta), disfrutamos escuchando todo tipo de música. Cuando se trata de música, realmente no existe la “pausa culpable”. ¿Cómo puede haber culpa en algo que te trae alegría?

¡Cierto!
¿Qué significa el nombre de su banda? ¿Cuál es el tema musical, es decir, las letras de las canciones de su banda?
Shinigami:
Los Shinigami, que literalmente se traduce como "dioses/espíritus de la muerte", son espíritus que se encuentran en la religión y la cultura japonesa y que actúan como psicopompos. Es decir, invitan a los humanos hacia la muerte. En los tiempos modernos, han encontrado su camino en la cultura pop principalmente a través del manga/anime, que todos nosotros en la banda disfrutamos. Sentimos que era un nombre fuerte para una banda de metal, así que lo adoptamos.
Hasta este punto de la historia de la banda, nuestras letras tratan principalmente de pensamientos/luchas personales y problemas cotidianos, aunque ocasionalmente agregamos elementos históricos/de fantasía a la mezcla para mantener las cosas interesantes. Dicho esto, realmente no hay una cosa/tema en particular que defina nuestras letras. Escribimos lo que nos parece apropiado para la música y se adapta a nuestro estado de ánimo.
¿Cuéntanos sobre tu sencillo “Strike Me Down”?
Shinigami:
“Strike Me Down” es una de las canciones más pesadas que hemos escrito hasta ahora y representa hacia dónde se dirigió la banda, musicalmente, avanzando. Líricamente, es una canción sobre perseverancia, resistencia y resiliencia ante la adversidad. Se podría decir que representa nuestra actitud como banda. No importa lo que el mundo nos depare, mantenemos la cabeza en alto, capeamos la tormenta y salimos victoriosos más fuertes que antes.
¿Es parte del próximo álbum?
Shinigami:
No, es una regrabación de una canción de nuestro álbum “Back From The Dead” de 2020.
En 2023 logramos formar la que probablemente sea la mejor alineación que jamás haya tenido un Shinigami. Por lo tanto, decidimos volver a grabar 4 canciones de nuestro álbum “Back From The Dead” (con algunas valiosas aportaciones del extraordinario productor y músico Bob Katsionis) y como una forma de presentar nuestra nueva formación al mundo, así como cerrar ese álbum. ciclo y allanando el camino para nuestro próximo lanzamiento.
Dicho esto, ya hemos terminado de escribir toda la música y letras para nuestro próximo álbum y estamos listos para entrar al estudio y comenzar a grabarlo. Una vez más, trabajaremos con Bob Katsionis y, si todo va según lo planeado, apuntamos a un lanzamiento en el verano de 2024.
¿Tienen algún vídeo nuevo para su próximo lanzamiento también?
Shinigami:
Bueno, primero hay que grabar el álbum, por supuesto, pero definitivamente planeamos hacer al menos un vídeo. ¡Con suerte, lograremos hacer aún más!
¿Tienen fechas para alguna presentación?
Shinigami:
Definitivamente planeamos organizar una gran fiesta de lanzamiento cuando salga el álbum, donde lo presentaremos en su totalidad. En cuanto a cuándo sucederá eso, todo depende de cuándo se lanza el álbum.
¿Qué otros planes tienen para 2024?
Shinigami:
Como mencioné antes, nuestro enfoque principal será grabar y lanzar nuestro próximo álbum. Sin embargo, dado que a todos nos gusta mucho actuar en vivo, seguiremos haciendo conciertos con la mayor frecuencia posible.
¿Qué otras sorpresas tienen para nosotros?
Shinigami:
No sería una gran sorpresa si te lo dijéramos ahora, ¿verdad? ¡Tendrás que esperar un poco más y ver cuándo sea el momento adecuado!
¿Qué esperan sus fans con este nuevo sencillo?
Shinigami:
Más conciertos, más canciones, más metal. ¡Nuestro objetivo es complacer y no decepcionar!
