Melodic death metal from Sweden!

Zephyra band shows us a bit of their new single! and Asa tells us a little about her new production

Hello my friend! How are you?

Hey! I am fine, thank you! Been a busy year so far, since we've moved to a house quite far from town. I love our new home, but the days at work becomes much longer, so I practically fall asleep when I get home!

How has this year been?

This year has been full of emotions. We've done some changes in the line-up, and that has been a process. Chemistry is so important in the band, so finding the right person for a spot is a huge job. Luckily, we´re now working with two awesome guys, who really share the idea of the band work and are dedicated to Zephyra on all levels. We connect very well, and it feels great!

Who is Asa at this moment, what is your story?

My story, oh! You have all day? ;)

Nah, just kidding!

I see myself as a very colorful person. Not just because of all the pink I wear on stage, but my personality is very strong. I respect people that have the courage to show the world what they want and believes in themselves. You have to be you, all others are taken you see ;).

I love life, even in times when it tosses and turns you around. A huge part of my life is Tony and our dog Zaphira (yes, the band name is created from her name). We have chosen to live child free, and spends our time making music, playing video games or enjoying the nature and war history. The next planned vacation will definitely go to Verdun, to watch the battlefields from WWI.

How has your vocal training been?

I practice my vocals every time I open my mouth to sing, talk or make noises. I want to be able to use my voice in every possible way, so I am determined, to learn as many different vocal styles and effects that I possibly can. As for now, I work with growls (obviously), clean vocals, distorted vocals, throat singing, screams and opera. I find it very useful not to be limited to just one set of vocal skills :).

Melodic death? What does that mean to you?

I like melodic death because of its elements. I prefer melodic music over all. I like the rhythm and all the wonderful melodies. I am very picky with what I listen to, and I rarely discover new bands. The melodeath band that inspires me the most is Dark Tranquillity. They have so much "space" in their songs, and Mikael Stanne has, in my ears, the best growls/grunts.

Do you like other, more heavy styles?

I listen to lots of different styles and genres. I get inspiration from both metal and other kinds of music. I don't listen to old school heavy metal or black metal a lot, but modern thrash and symphonic black metal might tickle my pickle.

Do you write some songs of your album?

Tony does almost all of the song writing for Zephyra, but I do write some lyrics and I always do some re-arranging for the final production after what works best with my voice and vocals. This year, I've been more involved in the song writing than ever before, and I like being a part of it.

What goals does Zephyra have in mind for this year?

Right now we are working to rehearse the sets we are about to play at the upcoming shows. We have another festival show (Quinphonic Festival) in England coming up and the preparations are many. We're booking some more shows as well, and then there is some work around the recent release.

Do you have other projects in mind?

The only other little project I have for the moment is recording some vocal covers. I am practicing some metal songs to record, as a part of me widening my vocal range. I am open for new ideas! Hit me with questions and thoughts!

How was the production of the Album 'As The World Collapses'?

Tell us a little about it, I really like it!

Glad to hear you like the album! It makes me happy every time I hear someone say that! :)

The recording of it was made in Borås, at MRG Produktion. Our producer, Micke, is a superb guy to work with, and he really listened to us when we have him our plan and thoughts about the album. Our goal was to show a wider and more complete sound of Zephyra. We didn't really achieve that with the first album, so we were very clear with what we wanted the result to be. We worked hard in the studio to really nail all parts just the way we wanted them. After Micke had done the production, the album was sent to the master of mix and mastering, Christian Donaldson at the Grid in Canada (he also plays in Cryptopsy).

For this album, will there be a new video?

There won't be a new video for this album, but the new single; ’The Darkest Black’, has just been released.

Tell us about your new single?

The new single was released on September 20. "The Darkest Black" is released through Inverse Records and it builds a bridge between our second album and the progress of writing and recording a third one. We have worked with Micke Andersson at MRG Studios (Borås) for recording and producing, and with Christian Donaldson at The Grid (Montreal) for the mix and master works; a superb team as showcased on the last album.
The song contains some lyrics in Swedish, and that was a new approach for us. Tony has been thinking about writing some parts in Swedish for quite a while, and now he finally did it. ’The Darkest Black has been very well received so far, and all the positive comments really makes me so glad! Do you have news about tours or events around Europe or other parts of the world?

Right now, all I can say is that we´re working and planning for some shows.

La banda Zephyra nos muestra un poco de su nuevo single! y Asa nos cuenta un poco sobre su nueva producción

¡Hola mi amiga! ¿Cómo estás?

¡Oye! ¡Estoy bien gracias! Ha sido un año ocupado hasta ahora, ya que nos hemos mudado a una casa bastante lejos de la ciudad. Me encanta nuestra nueva casa, pero los días de trabajo se hacen mucho más largos, así que prácticamente me duermo cuando llegue a casa!

¿Cómo ha sido este año?

Este año ha estado lleno de emociones. Hemos hecho algunos cambios en la alineación, y ese ha sido un proceso. Química es tan importante en la banda, por lo que encontrar la persona adecuada para un lugar es un gran trabajo. Afortunadamente, ahora estamos trabajando con dos tipos impresionantes, que realmente comparten la idea del trabajo de la banda y se dedican a Zephyra en todos los niveles. Nos conectamos muy bien, y se siente genial!

¿Quién es Asa en este momento, cuál es tu historia?

Mi historia, ¡oh! Tienes todo el día? ;)

No, sólo bromeaba!

Me veo como una persona muy colorida. No sólo por todo el rosa que llevo en el escenario, pero mi personalidad es muy fuerte. Respeto a las personas que tienen el coraje de mostrar al mundo lo que quieren y creen en sí mismos. Usted tiene que ser usted, todos los otros son tomados usted ve;).

Amo la vida, incluso en épocas en que ella lanza y da vuelta alrededor. Una gran parte de mi vida es Tony y nuestro perro Zaphira (sí, el nombre de la banda se crea a partir de su nombre). Hemos elegido vivir libre de niños, y pasa nuestro tiempo haciendo música, jugando videojuegos o disfrutando de la naturaleza y la historia de la guerra. Las próximas vacaciones planeadas definitivamente irán a Verdún, para ver los campos de batalla de la Primera Guerra Mundial.

¿Cómo ha sido tu entrenamiento vocal?

Practico mis voces cada vez que abro la boca para cantar, hablar o hacer ruidos. Quiero ser capaz de usar mi voz de todas las maneras posibles, así que estoy decidido a aprender como muchos diferentes estilos vocales y efectos que yo pueda. Por ahora, trabajo con gruñidos (obviamente), voces limpias, voces distorsionadas, canto de garganta, gritos y ópera. Me parece muy útil no limitarse a un solo conjunto de habilidades vocales :).

¿Melodic Death? ¿Qué significa eso para ti?

Me gusta la muerte melódica por sus elementos. Prefiero música melódica sobre todo. Me gusta el ritmo y todas las melodías maravillosas. Soy muy exigente con lo que escucho, y rara vez descubro nuevas bandas. La banda melodeath que más me inspira es Dark Tranquility. Tienen tanto "espacio" en sus canciones, y Mikael Stanne tiene, en mis oídos, los mejores gruñidos / gruñidos.

¿Te gustan otros estilos más pesados?

Escucho muchos estilos y géneros diferentes. Me inspiro tanto en el metal como en otros tipos de música. No escucho a la vieja escuela heavy metal o black metal mucho, pero thrash moderno y black metal sinfónico podría darme cosquillas.

¿Escribes algunas canciones de tu álbum?

Tony hace casi toda la composición de la canción para Zephyra, pero sí escribo algunas letras y siempre hago algunas re-arreglos para la producción final después de lo que funciona mejor con mi voz y voces. Este año, he estado más involucrado en la composición de canciones que nunca, y me gusta ser parte de ella.

¿Qué objetivos tiene Zephyra en mente para este año?

Ahora mismo estamos trabajando para ensayar los sets que estamos a punto de tocar en los próximos conciertos. Tenemos otro festival (Quinphonic Festival) en Inglaterra y los preparativos son muchos. Estamos reservando más espectáculos también, y luego hay algo de trabajo en torno a la reciente liberación.

¿Åsa, tienes otros proyectos en mente?

El único otro pequeño proyecto que tengo por el momento es grabar algunas portadas vocales. Estoy practicando algunas canciones de metal para grabar, como parte de mí ampliando mi rango vocal. ¡Estoy abierto a nuevas ideas! ¡Golpéame con preguntas y pensamientos!

¿Cómo fue la producción del álbum 'As The World Collapses'?

Cuéntanos un poco sobre ello, me gusta mucho!

Me alegra escuchar que te gusta el álbum! ¡Me hace feliz cada vez que escucho a alguien decir eso! :)

La grabación se hizo en Borås, en MRG Produktion. Nuestro productor, Micke, es un excelente tipo con quien trabajar, y realmente nos escuchó cuando le tenemos nuestro plan y pensamientos sobre el álbum. Nuestro objetivo era mostrar un sonido más amplio y completo de Zephyra. Realmente no lo conseguimos con el primer álbum, así que estábamos muy claros con lo que queríamos que fuera el resultado. Trabajamos duro en el estudio para clavar realmente todas las partes de la manera que queríamos. Después de Micke había hecho la producción, el álbum fue enviado al maestro de la mezcla y el dominio, Christian Donaldson en la Grid en Canadá (también juega en Cryptopsy).

Para este álbum, ¿habrá un nuevo vídeo?

No habrá un nuevo video para este álbum, pero el nuevo single; 'The Darkest Black', acaba de ser lanzado.

¿Cuéntanos sobre tu nuevo single?

El nuevo single fue lanzado el 20 de septiembre. "The Darkest Black" es lanzado a través de Inverse Records y construye un puente entre nuestro segundo álbum y el progreso de escribir y grabar un tercero. Hemos trabajado con Micke Andersson en MRG Studios (Borås) para grabar y producir, y con Christian Donaldson en The Grid (Montreal) para la mezcla y obras maestras; un magnífico equipo que se muestra en el último álbum.
